Oklahoma Women Preachers, Pioneers, and Pentecostals: An Analysis of the Elements of Collective and Individual Ethos Within the Selected Writings of Women Preachers of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church

Welch, Kristen January 2007 (has links)
In this dissertation, I argue that ethos is generative as James Corder defines it. I seek to show that women preachers of the International Pentecostal Holiness Church who spent a significant amount of their careers in Oklahoma generated an ethos in their autobiographical texts and transcribed, edited interviews that constructed individualized as well as a social instantiations of ethos. I rhetorically analyzed these texts using five categories of ethos as a rubric for making connections between Corderian theory and my case studies: ethos as transformation, ethos as wisdom or authority, ethos in the stated motives and purposes in a text, ethos as charisma, and ethos as dynamic processes built from identification. In chapter one, I lay out my theoretical perspective, situating it within the canonical history of rhetoric. In chapter two, I describe the historical and religious contexts that put my study of women preachers into a wide conversation of views on women preachers and show how my work is a participation in and a continuation of such conversations. In chapter three, I focus on the autobiographical texts from the late nineteenth through the middle twentieth centuries, comparing male constructions of ethos to female from members of the same group. In chapter four, I make connections between the older texts of chapter three and the twenty-first century interviews I collected and transcribed in 2004 in order to demonstrate paradigm shifts that have occurred, as well as to show how new instantiations of ethos are grounded in localized histories as well as larger ones. In chapter five, I turn to a discussion of the nature of truth inside of epistemic rhetorics. Since generative ethos is aligned with epistemic rhetoric, how we construct ethos within a group is tied to our sense of the nature of truth. Particularly interesting is my connection of truth and ethos to the Holy Spirit.

: la réécriture politique d'une révolte et de ses composantes : prosopographie de l'émeute, du saccage et du meurtre / Catholics peasants and rebels of the League in Cotentin at the end of XVIth century : political re-writing of a revolt and its social composants : prosopography of riots, lootings and murders

Mouchel-Vallon, Patrice 28 February 2017 (has links)
Harmed by the first Wars of Religion, the Cotentin region is torn between the need to mend its wounds and the need to put an end to the huguenot threat. Far away from everything and prone to panic, the region believes that it is threatened by a new english invasion or even worse, by the erection of a Protestant Republic in Carentan. However, the nobility is not leading the fight: exhausted by wars, quickly deprived from its leaders, it must deal with a small circle of bailiffs and lower clergymen with their own contacts in Paris, a small world which nurtures a rancor against the Crown and thinks that the aristocracy will not measure up to the issues at stake. This work focuses on the popular components of the rural League. Priests wielding halberds, canons carrying arquebuses, robber lords, pirates and shipwrecks looters, smugglers and farmer-generals taxing salt and beverages, corrupt sergeants, woodcutter-potters and glassmakers from the Brix forest, drapers, fullers and dyers, that make up to a thousand leaders and troublemakers, part of a an unknown, picaresque and often suspicious fauna whose common denominator is not reduced to primary anglophobia and anti-protestantism.This research is also a political story, convinced that at the bottom of the social scale, there is an opinion, even in Normandy. Hence the necessity to find new documents and confront the individual to the group, his words to his actions, his present to his past, in a peninsula where nothing is more complicated than taking a public stance and killing each other among acquaintances, Then forget about it or lie.

Erasmus, Jan Andries January 2007 (has links)
The aim of this study was to determine how preaching can stimulate spiritual growth and intensify the spirituality of Listeners. The working method for the study has been based on the mode[ formulated by Zerfass (1974) for Practical Theology and follows a Reformatory angle. • In the first place, basis-theoretical principles regarding preaching, spirituality and spiritual growth have been researched, as well as the relationship between preaching and spiritual growth. To do this, exegetical hermeneutical studies about a series of Bible texts, as well as some literary studies regarding these topics have been conducted. • In the second place, meta-theoretical principles regarding studies in Communication and the Psychology of Religion and Spirituality have been researched by means of Literary studies. • In the third place, a qualitative empirical study has been done to test the basis and meta-theoretical principles in practice. Interviews have been conducted with 21 participants from seven Reformatory churches. • In the fourth place, the results of the empirical study have been put in hermeneutical interaction with the basis- and meta-theoretical principles in order to formulate readjusted basis- and meta-theoretical principles. The readjusted basis- and meta-theoretical principles have been used to formulate a readjusted practice theory which gives guidelines on how preaching can contribute to spiritual growth and intensified spirituality. Out of this, a model has been formulated which can help preachers to promote spiritual growth among their listeners by means of their preaching. The result of this study is as follows: A preacher can promote spiritual growth and contribute to intensified spirituality among their Listeners by means of: • Identifying voids and problems in their listeners' spirituality • The context • Taking into account the level of spiritual growth of the listeners while preaching. These matters must be addressed in sermons which communicate effectively. In preaching, effective communication can be obtained by: • Having clarity regarding the tone to be used during the sermon (proclaiming, teaching, consoling or admonishing) • Having clarity regarding the exact goal of the sermon • Ensuring that the sermon possesses a strong structure • Thorough exegesis of Scripture • Effectively addressing all kinds of noise • Using techniques to make people actively listen to the sermon • Using techniques to make it easier for listeners to follow the sermon • Ensuring that the preacher is credible. Although preaching is a monologue in nature, feedback i s of the utmost importance to the preacher. Feedback can help in clearing up obscurities, identifying problems and other voids. These problems and voids can be addressed in follow-up sermons and over time preaching can encourage and accompany listeners in a congregation lo grow spiritually and deepen their spirituality. In this way, preaching contributes to Listeners having an ever growing fervent relationship with the Lord. / Thesis (Ph.D. (Homiletics))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.

Fleck, Luiz Otávio Carneiro January 2018 (has links)
The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the government of Munio of Zamora, who held the office of master general of the Order of Preachers between 1285 and 1291. Our reflection is supported by two types of documentation: Acts General Chapter and letters from the master general, provincial priors and the popes Honory IV and Nicholas IV. For the analysis of the Acts we propose the following questions: What was the institutional situation of the Order in the late thirteenth century? Is there a context of internal crisis? What were the most urgent problems that the leaders sought to fix? The reading of the letters is guided by the following questions: Is it possible to identify a Munio political project for the Order of Preachers to deal with the context of internal and external conflicts? What factors may have led and made possible the deposition of the master general? How were the relations of the Order of Preachers with the papacy, secular clergy, Friars Minor and other actors outside the Order? The methodology consisted of an analysis of the content of the Acts and the concomitance of the epistles. This documentation was read from its political dimensions, that is, as institutional attempts at conflict resolution. Year after year, the content of the Acts of the General Chapters provided an approximation to the legislative context of the Order. The understanding of this legislative context was amplified with the reading of the letters. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. Chapter 1 is devoted to the review of bibliography. In chapter 2 a narrative on the government of Munio de Zamora is constructed from the Acts of the General Chapters. In chapter 3 we move on to reading the letters relating them to the analysis of the Acts. The hypothesis for the deposition of the master general and its consequences for the Order consists of: the government of Munio de Zamora can be considered as a period of institutional instability for the Order of Preachers. This instability was aggravated in 1291 with the deposition of the master general by Nicholas IV. Detractors of the public fame of the Order delegitimized the performance of the Preachers in the dioceses. The scene was of internal conflicts between groups of interest formed by Preachers and of external conflicts with the secular clergy and other mendicants. The institutional instability came from the difficulty of the ruling friars to solve structural problems originating in the first years of the Order and aggravated at the end of the thirteenth century.

MOVIMENTOS RELIGIOSOS CONTRA-HEGEMÔNICOS NA AMÉRICA LATINA INSPIRANDO AS HISTÓRIAS DA FORMAÇÃO E A PRÁTICA DE AGENTES RELIGIOSOS EM MOVIMENTOS POPULARES NO RIO GRANDE DO SUL (1970-1980) / USING A CROSS AS A FLAG: RELIGIOUS MOVEMENTS AGAINSTHEGEMÔNICOS IN LATIN AMERICA INSPIRING THE HISTORIES OF THE FORMATION AND PRACTICE OF RELIGIOUS AGENTS WITHIN POPULAR MOVEMENTS IN THE RS (1970-1980)

Bonotto, Cléo Adriano Sabadi 02 May 2008 (has links)
This dissertation aims to comprehend the process of formation and acting of religious preachers who got engaged in social movement in the end of 1970 decade and the beginning of the 1980, in Rio Grande do Sul RS/BRAZIL. In spite of Brazil was within a dictatorial regime, and in this period there were no workers trade neither politics parties that were allowed to act or to express the folk classes interest; because of it other civil organization had to play this role, some of them were ready to organization had to play this role. However, the progressive sectors to be allowed to be active in the Catholic Church this institution was supposed to change, and see the real world; because only in this way the Church could be sensitive about the social problems. Nevertheless, a religion needs to keep a continuity meaning, even in changing times, in this way, the dissertation discuss the transformations occurred with the Catholic Church in the 20th Century, mainly with the liberation theology. The Centro de Orientação Missionária s role was analyzed referring to the theoretical formation of leaders and the organization of social movement. Trying to comprehend the formation s role in poor communities, staring to the pioneers Franciscans in Lomba do Pinheiro, it is located in the suburbs of Porto Alegre; also the participation of religious people in the landless workers movement MST ( Movimento dos Trabalhadores Sem Terra) organization in Rio Grande do Sul was analyzed as a practical period of formation to these religious preachers that are going to influence their participation in the social movement, presupposing that these three cases complete themselves, theoretical formation, inserted and practice. In order to develop this search, interviews with religious people, pastoral people and other preachers that were involved directly with this Movimentos were used.
