The Space of Construction: Elemental Prefabrication

Norris, Blake Alexander 27 July 2023 (has links)
Can a house be a product? This thesis sets out to form a set of basic elements for a minimum house in light of this question that is both functional and aesthetic. The goal is to develop an efficient prefabricated system of construction analogous to a chart of chemical elements. The modular system is then applied to the most basic footprint for a house - a 400 square foot Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU). Through studying the fundamental parts of a house, a level of understanding emerges, which allows for a projection of the idea as a whole. The ideal of prefabrication posits the possibility of architecture as a system. This idea has attracted architects for decades, despite what appears to be an inherent tension between architecture as a system and the poetic iconicity of the house as a type. A study of the systemic introduced by considerations of prefabrication can offer a deeper understanding of the complex nature of architecture. Finally, can the essence of architecture endure amidst the necessary limitations of factory production and manufacturing in our post-industrial age? / Master of Architecture / This thesis consists of a system-generated 400 square foot prefabricated house, a catalog of the house's elements, an expanded catalog of small houses, and a series of studies conducted while traveling through Europe and upon return. The system utilizes a series of functional pods and frames the 'served' with panelized elemental compounds such as walls, floors, and roofs to meet the programmatic requirements of a house. By applying this limited catalog, the feasibility of production can be explored through an expanded catalog. Ultimately, the whole must be greater than the sum of its parts; through tectonic articulation, functional clarity and an additive approach, this can be achieved while meeting the strict constraints that prefabrication demands.

Urban segregation | clichy-sous-bois | paris

Riemenschnitter, Kathrin 12 June 2008 (has links)
this thesis investigates, whether or not, and to what degree architecture effects the urban and social segregation of suburbs which are built primarily to house industrial labor in times of economic growth. the city of clichy-sous-bois, which became well known because of its riots in 2005 was the particular focus of this study. the work informs the reader about the historical background of clichy and its dedicated french metropolis paris. it gives background information about the riots of 2005 and today's situation of the banlieue. then, the thesis follows some general examples about the "haussmannisation" of paris and gives a short insight in the statistical coherences of crime and urbanism. after that, it takes a quick look at special housing examples in east-germany and vienna. it concludes with a summary and comparison of researched information and a possible proposal to improve the conditions in clichy-sous-bois. / Master of Architecture

Passive solar utilization in modular housing

Gupta, Kaushik January 1982 (has links)
This thesis seeks to put forth an alternative to conventional housing by taking advantage of the low construction costs attributable to prefabrication and the reduced cost of energy required by integrating passive solar devices in the unit. It is the assumption here that the already inflated cost of conventional construction and fuel can only increase, thus pushing the possibility of owning a home, out of reach of the average earner. The proposed guidelines and subsequent solutions stated are expected to prove themselves as an attractive and economical alternative to customers. Prefabrication methods and the use of passive solar devices are studied in depth to ascertain the optimum methods of use. The relevance of daylighting and natural ventilation are also evaluated. The selection of the final plan is achieved by analyzing predicted costs of heating each unit, taking into account building enclosure data. Guidelines for manufacture, transportation and erection of each unit are also proposed. / M. Arch.

Rebuilding the Past, Sustaining the Future

Donato, Christian 26 June 2018 (has links)
By researching natural disaster displacement and the process in which we rebuild, I have found that by creating a modular prefabricate unit that is both cost efficient and easy to construct, we can significantly reduce the rebuild time, reduce people from leaving, as well as encourage new residents to move to the effected area. It is important as an architect and designer to use our skills to better help humanity. By focusing on the effects of Hurricane Harvey in the Houston Area, I have developed a unit design, and infrastructure plan that can be used universally around the world to help effected cities and people survive after a natural disaster. These findings are useful in the fact that the United State has no universal plan when dealing with disaster events. By creating a plan to provide single and multi family units, and incorporating them within close distance to necessary needs and infrastructure, this plan has the potential to reduce rebuild time, and encourage economy growth. / Master of Architecture

Análise da segurança estrutural das lajes pré-fabricadas na fase de construção. / Structural safety analysis of prefabricated slabs in the construction phase.

Gaspar, Ricardo 26 November 1997 (has links)
Among the fundamental elements of reinforced concrete structures, slabs have been the object of continuous improvement regarding of comfort, safety and economy. The development of economical construction techniques has permitted the forecoming of precast slabs, with advantages over massive slabs, such as: reducing the consumption of formwork, concrete, and consequently a reduction of the stress on the structural elements and foundations. All these, obviously, result in quicker execution and greater economy in construction costs. This study has attempted to gather the necessary information to provide a global view of this subject; approaching historical aspects of precast slabs, a description of its elements and construction process, dimensioning, laboratory experiments upon truss-framed reinforced beams, and finally, an analysis of security in the construction phase. It was concluded that the quality and structural performance of these slabs depend greatly on the care taken during the construction phase, particulary in respect to bracing. Thus, accidents caused by errors comitted at this stage are avoided.
