A study in the relationship between archeologicalscience and modern health trends

Sievers, Viggo January 2023 (has links)
This study analyses the modern paleodiet through a postmodernist lens and tries to find out if the proponents of the diet have a honest approach to archeological science. The study is based on four sources written by three individuals, two books by the archeologist Göran Burenhult, another source is The Paleo Solution by Robb Wolf. The fourth positive source to the paleodiet is Swedish Paleo, a company which markets the paleodiet and AIP-diet online. Marlene Zuk in her book Paleofantasy is an opponent to the paleodiet and her arguments are in opposition to the other sources. She is not however considered to be a main actor to be analyzed in this study, instead her arguments are only meant to analyze the positive metanarrative which proponents of the paleodiet advocates. The result of the study is that the modern paleodiet often excludesinformation which contradicts the image of the paleodiet the proponents of the diet wants to present.

Walking through time: a window onto the prehistory of the Yorkshire Dales through multi-method, non-standard survey approaches

Saunders, Mary K. January 2017 (has links)
Walking through time: a window onto the prehistory of the Yorkshire Dales through multi-method, non-standard survey approaches Keywords: Yorkshire Dales, prehistory, veneration, natural places, geophysical survey, walkover survey, field-system, clearance, land tenure The large-scale field-systems, ubiquitous across upland and marginal parts of the Yorkshire Dales, are insecurely dated and poorly understood. Apart from some sporadic academic interest, the archaeology of this region has yet to receive the level of scholarly attention it deserves. The research presented here involved an intensive investigation of an area near Grassington, Upper Wharfedale, UK. Detailed field analysis revealed a section of one of these field-systems to be only a single element in a complex, multi-layered prehistoric landscape, which it is proposed may have roots as far back as the early Neolithic. Contextualisation of the survey area against palynological data, radiocarbon dates and comparative material moves the date of inception of the field-systems back to the middle Bronze Age, some 1000 years earlier than is currently assumed. The combination of empirical data and theoretical ideas has allowed a relative chronology to be determined in the survey area, together with the creation of a testable hypothesis surrounding the development of Upper Wharfedale and the wider Yorkshire Dales through prehistory. A sense of place and the veneration of natural places are key themes within this landscape and it was possible through these to draw out elements of prehistoric society and to show the evolution of ideas such as land tenure and monument significance. This dual empirical-theoretical approach is novel in upland landscape archaeology in the UK and is shown here to have significant merit. / Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) collaborative doctoral award / The data and photo files are not available online.

Ritual and Funerary Rites in Later Prehistoric Scotland: An Analysis of Faunal Assemblages from the Covesea Caves

Fitzpatrick, Alexandra L. January 2020 (has links)
The Covesea Caves are a series of later prehistoric sites that form a complex mortuary landscape. Previous excavations of the caves have provided evidence for the decapitation, disarticulation, and intentional deposition of human remains. Although there has been substantial analysis of the human remains, there has been little consideration of the significant number of faunal remains recovered during numerous excavations. This research represents the first focused examination of the extensive zooarchaeological record from the Covesea Caves, with an emphasis on investigating characteristics of the faunal bone related to taphonomy and processing in order to provide a proxy for the complex funerary treatments to which the human remains were subject. Analysis of Covesea Cave 2 revealed a narrative of ritual and funerary activities, from the Neolithic to the Post-Medieval Period. Zooarchaeological analysis has illustrated how certain species were significant in ritual activity, and thus utilised specifically in funerary rites. The results from this research shed more light on past cosmologies and the importance of non-human species to humans in both life and death. / Funding for fieldwork was provided by Historic Environment Scotland and Aberdeenshire Council. Lab work and species confirmation was funded by a generous grant from the British Cave Research Association. Funding for this [comparative] analysis was provided by the following organisations: The Prehistoric Society, The Society of Antiquaries of Scotland, The Natural History Society of Glasgow

Identification of Avian Remains from Covesea Cave 2 on the Moray Firth Coast, Northeastern Scotland

Fitzpatrick, Alexandra L. 22 March 2022 (has links)
No / The Covesea Caves, located on the coast of the Moray Firth in northeastern Scotland, are a series of archaeological cave sites that are hypothesized to be part of a larger mortuary complex used during the Late Prehistoric period. Although much attention has been given to the unusual assemblage of human remains recovered from these sites, there has been less analysis undertaken on the vast amount of archaeofauna from the caves. This is in the process of being rectified through the recent work of the Covesea Cave Project, under direction of Ian Armit and Lindsey Büster and currently being undertaken at the University of Bradford. This report details attempts to confirm species identifications for several faunal bones of interest through various methodologies; unfortunately, not all of the attempts were successful. However, identifications are confirmed for two avian bones using comparative osteological analysis at the Avian Anatomical Collection at the Natural History Museum at Tring, United Kingdom. These species are placed in context through consideration of previous excavations at the Covesea Caves, as well as recent literature on ornithological analyses of ritual and funerary sites in Later Prehistoric Britain.

Laplaige, Clément 16 February 2012 (has links) (PDF)

Varenne, Clément 29 June 2013 (has links) (PDF)

Arquier, Bernard 13 September 2013 (has links) (PDF)

Town and Gown : amateurs and academics : the discovery of British prehistory, Oxford 1850-1900 : a pastime professionalised

Price, Elizabeth Megan January 2007 (has links)
This investigation into the origin of a collection of nineteenth century lanternslides revealed evidence of the social, intellectual and cultural importance of various scientific societies in Oxford, and the contributions made by those involved, particularly the creator of the lanternslides, H. M. J. Underhill, (1855–1920). Evidence gathered from primary sources showed a fluidity of relationships between the supposed ‘town and gown’ in late nineteenth century Oxford which consisted of a community of citizens, amateurs and academics, all of whom were linked by a growing interest in the real and mythological British past. Following a discussion of the key intellectual and social influences in Britain during the latter half of the nineteenth century, including the implications of the emerging evidence of an ancient human past, the thesis focuses on individual case studies. They illustrate the roles of overlooked or neglected individuals whose work contributed to the growth of today’s discipline of British prehistory. Several people, now forgotten, including Underhill were contemporaries of Arthur Evans and Edward Tylor whose social circumstances made it easier for them to become prominent academics. The results of this research indicate that a new approach is required in the history of archaeology; one that would draw attention to the vital contributions made by forgotten or overlooked individuals, societies and popular publications. Further attention to these issues will shed new light on the way that prehistoric archaeology moved from an antiquarian pastime to an academic discipline between 1850 and 1900.

O passado no presente: vestígios pré-coloniais como suporte analítico da paisagem no Vale do Soturno, RS / The past in the present: precolonial traces anda analytical support of the landscape in the Soturno river valley in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

Santi, Juliana Rossato 02 February 2010 (has links)
Buscamos desvendar como ocorreu a ocupação humana (anterior a colonização) no Vale do Rio Soturno, região central do estado do Rio Grande do Sul, Brasil. / This search refers to the establishment of human populations in past times and the interaction process that can develop between them, shown by archaeology. We seek to discover how human occupation occurred (before colonization) in Sortuno river valley, in central Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The archaeological sites studied in this micro-region were: Várzea dos Bugres; Cerro dos Bugres; Cerro do Tope; Moacir Rossato, with the remaining cultures attributed mostly to the Guarani. We try to understand what choices these groups have in relation to local environmental resources, their exploration strategies, relations between themselves and the choices in the development of their remaining fixtures of everyday use. We realize that groups working in this area have chosen to adopt some specific technical features, but in general follow the classic pattern Guarani occupation. We also worked with the community that lives on site using the heritage education methodology, so that the cultural heritage studied could become known and accepted between those who will be their guardians. Although we could not count with a certain number of sites that study regional character, we believe to have contributed it to archaeological Guarani, showing specific cultural groups that occupied a place that until then had not been studied.
