The Use of Process and Simulation Modeling to Inform the Design of Electronic Prescribing Systems

<p>Objectives: (1) to assess whether computer simulation modeling or process modeling have improved medication management systems, including informing the design of e-prescribing systems for Canada, and (2) to build and validate a workflow diagram of the handwritten medication management process in the community setting for Canada and use it to obtain feedback from stakeholders.</p> <p>Methods: A systematic review was conducted to assess whether the modeling techniques have improved medication management systems. A workflow diagram was developed and used to obtain feedback from stakeholders as to where problems exist in the current paper-based process and where information technology might be of help. Analyses were descriptive and qualitative.</p> <p>Results: The systematic review identified 13,376 citations, 8 of which were included in the full data extraction. The review revealed that simulation models of e-prescribing systems have been developed, but their accuracy and usefulness has not been established. One process model had been used to analyze a Canadian medication management system, but no evidence was found that process models had any positive impact on e-prescribing development in Canada.</p> <p>Fifteen stakeholders, including 5 physicians, 5 pharmacists, and 5 members of the public provided feedback using the workflow diagram. All stakeholders agreed that the diagram was a realistic representation of the actual handwritten medication management process, suggesting face validity. The majority of stakeholders identified the most problematic processes as generating the prescription by the physician (9/15 (60.0%)) and drug checking by the physician (6/15 (40.0%)).</p> <p>Conclusions: There is a lack of published evidence on simulation models and process models, and the studies that exist do not suggest any benefit in informing e-prescribing design. We developed and established face validity for a workflow diagram of the paper-based medication management cascade. Stakeholders believed that generating the prescription and drug checking by the physician could be improved by e-prescribing.</p> / Master of Science (MSc)

Towards a reusable process model structure for higher education institutions

One of the tools used during re-engineering of an environment is the process model as modelling tool. The identification of process models within an institution is a difficult and tedious task. A problem is that often process model structures is identified for one specific project and not stored for future reuse. The ideal for institutions is to reuse process model structures within the institution. This study focused on the generic structures within the higher education application domain where the hypothesis for this study was that a generic educational process model structure for higher education institutions can be established; a process management flow procedure can be used to manage the flow within an educational process model; and that aneducational process model can be stored and reused in re-engineering efforts. The study was divided into three research questions, where the first focused on the identification of generic process model structures, the second on the usability of the process model structures within a re-engineering effort, and the last on the preservation of a process model structure. For the first research question, the identification of process model structures, three institutions were used for data collection. It was necessary to develop a requirements elicitation procedure for data collection. The structure derived was confirmed at a fourth institution. For the second research question, which focuses on the usability of process model structures, an ordinal measurement was defined to measure the usefulness of the process model structures in a reengineering effort. A re-engineering procedure was developed for re-engineering the application domain, called the process management flow procedure, and used for a re-engineering effort at one institution. Lastly, for the third research question the preservation of the process model structures, the abstraction of the process model structure was investigated as well as the feasibility of implementing the process model structures physically using existing repository software. The conclusion after the investigation of the three research questions was that the hypothesis was confirmed that there is indeed a set of process model structures within the higher education institution that are generic, preservable and reusable in a re-engineering effort. / Computing / Ph. An investigation into quality assurance of the Open Source Software Development model

The Open Source Software Development (OSSD) model has launched products in rapid succession and with high quality, without following traditional quality practices of accepted software development models (Raymond 1999). Some OSSD projects challenge established quality assurance approaches, claiming to be successful through partial contrary techniques of standard software development. However, empirical studies of quality assurance practices for Open Source Software (OSS) are rare (Glass 2001). Therefore, further research is required to evaluate the quality assurance processes and methods within the OSSD model. The aim of this research is to improve the understanding of quality assurance practices under the OSSD model. The OSSD model is characterised by a collaborative, distributed development approach with public communication, free participation, free entry to the project for newcomers and unlimited access to the source code. The research examines applied quality assurance practices from a process view rather than from a product view. The research follows ideographic and nomothetic methodologies and adopts an antipositivist epistemological approach. An empirical research of applied quality assurance practices in OSS projects is conducted through the literature research. The survey research method is used to gain empirical evidence about applied practices. The findings are used to validate the theoretical knowledge and to obtain further expertise about practical approaches. The findings contribute to the development of a quality assurance framework for standard OSSD approaches. The result is an appropriate quality model with metrics that the requirements of the OSSD support. An ideographic approach with case studies is used to extend the body of knowledge and to assess the feasibility and applicability of the quality assurance framework. In conclusion, the study provides further understanding of the applied quality assurance processes under the OSSD model and shows how a quality assurance framework can support the development processes with guidelines and measurements.

Electronic Benefit Transfer: Food Choices, Food Insecurity, and Type 2 Diabetes

The purpose of this research was to examine food security for people with prediabetes participating in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), focusing on their food choice decisions and coping strategies over a 30-day benefit cycle that potentially increases the risk of Type 2 diabetes. A cross-sectional, quantitative design based on food choice process model constructs was used. SNAP participants (n = 36) with prediabetes, aged 21â??70 years, were recruited as outpatients from Bronx Lebanon Hospital and completed self-reported questionnaires on demographics and health, food security, and food frequency. Descriptive statistics, Pearson chi square tests, and regression analysis were performed using SPSS. Also, independent t test, and Levene's test were used for ad hoc analysis to assess variation of food choice decisions over 30 days. Of the sample, 5% had low and 95% very low food secure status. Food security status did not predict coping strategies (p = .724); however, food security status and type of coping strategy had a moderate relationship (p < 0.01; r =.60). Food choices of 11 food categories changed over a 30-day cycle with greatest variation for Week 1, compared to Weeks 2â??4 (p < .005). Use of coping strategies to minimize hunger was limited. Very low food security associated with certain coping strategies disrupted eating patterns. Disrupted eating patterns affect food variation over time, increasing the intake of non-nutrient-dense foods and the risk of obesity and Type 2 diabetes. The implications for positive social change include the potential to change SNAP's benefit allotments, make nutrition education mandatory, and create a nutrition package, thereby lowering food insecurity and the risk of Type 2 diabetes.

對企業而言,Internet和電子商務的興起提供了一個全新的商業交易方式。許多企業企圖融合新的資訊科技與企業流程,讓他們可以跨越企業間的藩籬進而互相分享價值鏈中的決策、工作流與資訊。然而,當企業嘗試著以其內部的資訊系統與交易夥伴溝通時,卻發現到處都是問題。雖然XML 提供了一個多功能的且健全的資料交換格式,但仍然不夠,必須有一個流程整合的標準來進行企業間交易流程的塑模(modeling)、部署(deploying)、執行(executing)以及管理(managing)。在本篇研究中,將探討企業對企業間協同流程的整合,並且發展一個以ebXML為基礎的協同商務企業流程模式。基於UN/CEFACT Modeling Methodology (UMM)此一致性的塑模方法論,本研究以邏輯化且系統化的方式來發現並詳細表達出國際物流業的跨企業交易流程,並以ebXML流程分析表格(ebXML Business Process Analysis Worksheets)為流程塑模輔助工具,進行國際物流業流程分析結果的記錄與表達。 基於此一ebXML為基礎之流程模式,本研究開發了一個企業間流程整合的雛形系統,藉以證明此企業流程模式是可行的,同時提出一個即時有效率的企業間電子商務可行方案。 / Internet technology and electronic commerce (EC) have brought up a complete overhaul on the information and communication technology infrastructure to do business in a new manner where companies try to leverage new technologies to enable a set of complex cross-enterprise business processes allowing entire value chains to share decision-making, workflow, capabilities, and information with each other. However, companies often have problems in making their internal information technology (IT) systems communicate with their partners. Although eXtensible Markup Language (XML) represents the most versatile and robust format for exchanging business information, there is also a need for process integration standard that enables processes to be modeled, deployed, executed, and managed. In this research, business-to-business collaboration process integration issues have been studied and an ebXML-based Collaborative Commerce Business Process Model is developed. According to a consistent modeling methodology, UN/CEFACT Modeling Methodology (UMM), we identify and specify the inter-enterprise business processes of the global logistics industry in a logical and systematical way. The ebXML Business Process Analysis Worksheets is used as modeling aids to record and represent analysis results of global logistics industry. Based on the ebXML-based business process model, we develop a B2B process integration prototype system which shows that the business process model is feasible and suggests a possible solution for real-time and efficient B2B electronic commerce.
