A produção de tilápia é desenvolvida principalmente no sistema em tanques-rede utilizando os grandes reservatórios artificiais e rios das regiões Sudeste, Nordeste e Sul. A produção de tambaqui está concentrada nas regiões Nordeste, Centro-Oeste e Norte, utilizando viveiros escavados com elevado grau de eutrofização. A importância dessas duas espécies para a piscicultura brasileira é inquestionável. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho foi caracterizar, avaliar economicamente e determinar a eficiência da criação de tilápia em tanques-rede e do tambaqui em viveiros escavados, partindo da hipótese que “esses sistemas são eficientes técnica e economicamente”. Fez-se a caracterização das unidades de excelência que possam servir como modelo para as demais propriedades e identificados os desperdícios gerados nas unidades ineficientes. Para avaliar a criação de tilápia foi escolhida a região do médio Paranapanema-SP, por ser considerada a com maior índice de produtividade e historicamente produtora de peixe. No caso do tambaqui escolheu-se a região metropolitana de Manaus-AM, considerada a região com maior consumo dessa espécie no Brasil e historicamente produtora da espécie. Os dados foram obtidos por meio da aplicação de questionário semiestruturado em que foram identificadas as fases de criação, ciclos de produção, manejos adotados, infraestrutura utilizada, os índices produtivos obtidos e o desembolso monetário. Esses dados possibilitaram a determinação do custo de produção e os indicadores de rentabilidade. Os dados de custo de produção e lucro foram utilizados para determinar a eficiência das pisciculturas utilizando o modelo BCC- Data Envelopment Analyse (DEA). / The tilapia and tambaqui are the fish species most produced in Brazilian. The production of tilapia is mainly developed in the system in cages using large artificial reservoirs and rivers of the Southeast, Northeast and South. The production of tambaqui is concentrated in the Northeast, Midwest and North, using earth ponds with high eutrophication. The importance of these species on the Brazilian fish is unquestionable. The objective of this study was to characterize, economically evaluate and determine the efficiency of tilapia in cages and tambaqui in earth ponds, on the assumption that "these systems are efficient technically and economically." There was the characterization of excellence units that can serve as model for other properties and identified waste generated in inefficient units. To evaluate the tilapia was chosen the region of the Middle Paranapanema-SP, for being considered the most productivity index and historically producing fish. In the case of tambaqui we were chosen the metropolitan region of Manaus-AM, considered the region with the highest consumption of this species in Brazil and historically producing species. The data were obtained by applying a semi-structured questionnaire that were identified phases of creation, production cycles adopted handlings infrastructure used, the obtained production rates and monetary disbursements. Author: Ellen Wendel Tutor/Examiner: Sarah Philipson   Background   The purpose of this thesis first arose when interviewing the CEO and the chief of product development of a Swedish wood company. The lack of communication between the two of them and the overall information flow within the company seemed to me brutally bad. When leaving that company a question popped up: Do a low production cost/unit and/or a low product complexity on an industrial market result in low customer involvement?   Problem focus/hypotheses   Product failure is costly and time consuming; doing it right the first time can keep a company alive and give it competitive advantages, Matzler et al (1997). Customer involvement has proven to increase the chances for a successful product launch, von Hippel (1988), Lagrosen (2005), Pitta et al (1996) and Matzler et al (1997). With the assumption that customer involvement can affect product development in a positive way, any conditions that might drive customer involvement in product development would be of interest. This thesis investigates three hypotheses concerning how product complexity and production cost drive customers involvement; H1: High product complexity positively predicts the use of high customer involvement in the product development. H2: High production cost positively predicts the use of high customer involvement in the product development. H3: High production cost and high product complexity together positively predicts the use of high customer involvement.   Method   The main study was executed with surveys sent per e-mail. The investigated populations are wood component suppliers and machine suppliers. The suppliers were chosen to get a vast range of product complexity and production cost. The hypotheses were analyzed with chi-square statistics and percentages.   To get a basic understanding of the industry, I first made a pre-study; interviewing two suppliers and telephone interviewing the head of glued edge pine panel issues at the Swedish Wood &amp; Furniture Association.   Findings   Hypothesis 1 I conclude that higher product complexity leads to higher customer involvement on both industries. This result gives more validation to the emerging theory stated by Richard et al (2004). Hypothesis 2  This thesis validates hypothesis 2 among wood suppliers. I suggest future research to validate a possible theory the states that higher production cost drive higher customer involvement. Hypothesis 2 is not accepted on the machine supplier industry since the results were inconclusive. No overall pattern was found.  However, the result indicates that the hypothesis might be correct up until a certain level of complexity, after which the relationship is negative. Hypothesis 3   I consider hypothesis 2 to be validated on the wood supplier market. I suggest future research to validate a possible theory the states that higher production cost and product complexity and production cost combined drive higher customer involvement. The thesis result indicates that hypothesis 3, on the machine supplier market, might be correct up until a certain level of complexity and production cost combination, after which the relationship is negative. Hypothesis 3 cannot be accepted for the machine supplier industry since the results are inconclusive. General findings from the hypotheses All three hypotheses indicate a positive prediction that product complexity, production cost and the two variables combined will drive the behavior of “usage or no usage” of customer involvement, regardless of industry. / <p>Opponenter: Elna Hägglund och Frida Tillmar</p>

Nursery Techniques Influence the Growth of Hazelnuts

Since Ferrero SpA established a manufacturing plant in Brantford, Ontario, there has been considerable interest in developing a hazelnut industry locally. One of the issues that needs to be overcome is to supply large numbers of suitable plants rapidly. They can be micropropagated, and then grown in the nursery. Usually, it takes two years to grow suitably sized plants in the nursery. This thesis investigated methods to grow suitably sized plants in one year and evaluated the nursery systems from financial aspect. Hazelnut seedlings were planted in ellepots and plastic pots, and then subjected to three treatments: grown in a retractable roof greenhouse, treated with root pruning technology or grown in outdoor environment. Also, two transplant timings were tested: the fall of 2011 and the spring of 2012. The results showed that pot type did not influence the growth of hazelnut seedlings. The retractable roof greenhouse increased growth and the root pruning technology changed the seedlings root structure but not their growth. Transplant timing did not affect the seedlings growth in the first year in the field. The retractable roof greenhouse has the potential to produce two crops of seedlings in one growing season compared to one crop in the outdoor nursery. The estimated cost per seedling under retractable roof greenhouse was $9.31, which was $1.95 cheaper than outdoor. / Ontario Centres of Excellence and Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs

O presente trabalho teve por objetivo estudar a fenologia; avaliar o custo de produção e a rentabilidade da cultura; e delimitar a cadeia produtiva de romã na região oeste do estado de São Paulo, pontuando a ocorrência de produção, quanto aos aspectos agronômicos e tecnologias utilizadas em seu cultivo, bem como fornecer informações aos integrantes desta cadeia produtiva e possíveis interessados em investir no ramo. O conhecimento das fases fenológicas e a possibilidade de produção durante todo o ano viabilizam o escalonamento de acordo com as atividades da propriedade, manutenção de renda diluída ao longo do ano e negociação de acordo com o melhor preço; da gema reprodutiva até a maturação completa, a romã leva 111 dias no inverno e 105 dias no verão. Há, porém na cadeia produtiva, forte intermediação e comercialização difusa com logística prejudicada pelo distanciamento dos centros de produção e consumo. O principal fornecedor de romã ao Ceagesp é o estado de São Paulo com participação de 53,48% e preço médio de R$10,52.kg-1, destacando os municípios de São Paulo e Taquaritinga; por esta mesma via, tem sido introduzido novos cultivares, como o caso da romã ‘Wonderful’, importada dos Estados Unidos ao qual é considerada referência de qualidade e repercutido em forte concorrência ao produto paulista. Novembro a janeiro são os meses de maior oferta de romã, enquanto que de junho a setembro há os melhores preços. Tamanho, coloração e sanidade são citados por intermediários e consumidores como aspectos a serem considerados para a compra, sendo requeridos frutos sem manchas, avermelhados e graúdos; além disto, a principal sugestão por parte dos consumidores é o fornecimento de informações referentes aos componentes nutraceuticos, seus efeitos e benefícios. / The pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) is an old exotic fruit, with descriptions of its use in the Bible and in the writings of Greek and Persian mythology. Therefore, this paper aims to study the phenology, assess the cost of production and profitability of the crop, delimit the production chain of pomegranate in the western region of São Paulo, pointing out the occurrence of pomegranate production, agronomic aspects and technologies used in its cultivation, as well as provide information to members of this production chain and possible interested in investing in the business. The possibility of production throughout the year makes it viable to staggering according to the activities of the property, diluted income maintenance throughout the year and trading in accordance with the best price; reproductive bud to full maturity, the pomegranate takes 111 days in winter and 105 days in the summer. There is however the production chain, strong intermediation and diffuse with marketing logistics harmed distanced from the production and consumption centers. The main pomegranate supplier to Ceagesp is the state of São Paulo with a share of 53.48% and average price R$10,52.kg-1, of particular note being the municipalities of São Paulo and Taquaritinga; the same path, it has been introduced new cultivars, as the case of the United States imported pomegranate which is considered a quality reference and reflected in strong competition to the Paulista product. Salinidade e composição iônica da água na larvicultura do camarão-da-amazônia, Macrobrachium amazonicum /

Foram realizados dois experimentos. No primeiro, foram avaliadas salinidades em amplo espectro (4, 12, 20 e 28) e no segundo, foram avaliadas as salinidades 6, 9, 12 e 15. Em ambos, o delineamento foi em blocos casualizados, com quatro tratamentos (salinidades) e quatro repetições. Diariamente, 10 larvas de cada tanque de cultivo foram observadas em microscópio para a identificação do índice de estágio larval. No 18° dia de cultivo foi realizada a despesca de todos os tanques de cultivo. As larvas e pós-larvas foram contadas individualmente e foram calculadas a sobrevivência, a porcentagem de larvas e de PL e a produtividade (em PL/L). Para a obtenção do peso seco, as PL foram secas em. estufa (70°C, 48 horas) e pesadas em balança analítica (precisão de 11lg). O custo de produção e a rentabilidade foram detenninados para as salinidades 6, 9, 12 e 15. O desenvolvimento larval foi mais lento e a sobrevivência foi menor (p<0,05) na salinidade 4 (experimento 1) e ambos não diferiram entre as salinidades 6 e 15 (experimento 2). A porcentagem de PL foi maior (p<O,OS) no intervalo de salinidade 12 a. 20. O peso seco das PL foi menor nas salinidades 4 e 28. A maior taxa de metamorfose e o menor custo de produção foram obtidos na salinidade 12. Concluindo, as larvas da população de M. amazoniculJJ estudada são eurialinas, podendo desenvolver-se em salinidades variando de 4 a 28, mas a salinidade 12 maximiza a produção de PL, reduz o tempo de cultivo e o custo de produção. Possivelmente, a salinidade 12 corresponda ao ótimo ecológico para a população estudada e deve ser usada na larvicultura comercial, quando os reprodutores provém desta população. / Abstract: This work aimed to study the salinity effects on Macrobrachium amazoniatl1l hatchery. The larvae development, productive parameters, post-Iarvae production cost and retum were evaluated. Two experiments were conducted. 1n the first one, the salinities 4, 12,20 and 28 were evaluated. On the second trial, salinities 6, 9, 12 and 15 were evaluated. 1n both experiments a randomized block design was set up with four treatments (salinities) and four replicate. The larvae were reared into 120 L closed-system tanks for 18 days. Daily, ten larvae of each tank were collected and analyzed under stereomicroscopy to determine the larvae stage index. The larvae and post-Iarvae were counted and survival, percentage of larvae and post-Iarvae and productivity (PL/L) were calculated. To obtain the dry weight the post-Iarvae were dried and weighed on an analytical balance (1-~g precision). The production cost and retum were determined. The larvae development was slower and the survival lower (p<O,05) at salinity 4 (experiment 1). These same variables did not differ among salinities 6-15 (experiment 2). The post-Iarvae metamorphosis rate was higher between salinities 12-20. The PL dry weight was lower in salinities 4 and 28. 1n conclusion, the larvae of the studied }vI. amazo1Jicum population were euryhaline and can develop in salinities among 4 - 28, but the salinity 12 improves production, decreases the period of culture and the cost production. Yes / The shortage of fresh water resources is a global problem which requires a prompt solution. Thus, the multi effect distillation (MED) was successfully used for the production of fresh water from seawater. Despite the use of MED desalination system extensively, the influence of the number of effects on the fresh water production cost has not been covered in the open literature. Thus, this paper tries to rectify this specific challenge via simulation at given operating conditions of seawater salinity and temperature. The study is performed using a detailed mathematical model contains the suitable cost correlations. gPROMS model builder suite has been used to carry out an extensive simulation. The results of the study show that the lowest fresh water production cost can be achieved at an optimal number of effects of 17 for a certain operating conditions.

Direct payment subsidies and the impact on farm land prices: a cross-country comparative evaluation

Master of Agribusiness / Department of Agricultural Economics / Mykel Taylor / Agriculture subsidization policies have a long history and have been criticized, reformed and heavily discussed multiple times over the last centuries. However, most countries in the world use farm subsidies as a policy instrument and spend billions every year. Especially highly developed and wealthy countries seem to have a tendency to subsidize production agriculture and the agricultural industry. The objective of this thesis is to improve understanding of the impact direct payments or subsidies may have on farm land values via farmers paying higher dollars for ground they rent and capitalization of those higher rents. Analysis is done by comparing the allocation of subsidy dollars from the Common Agricultural Policy on two wheat farms in Germany and Czech Republic, which are member countries of the European Union, to wheat farms in the United States and Australia, countries with relatively lower subsidy levels. Data for the farms include their cost structures, total revenues, and total direct payments. Comparisons of their relative land values and rental rates paid will provide evidence to test the hypothesis that direct subsidies are likely to increase land values. Based on the economic costs of production for the farms in Germany and Czech Republic, the value of land is not necessarily the residual claimant for the direct payments paid out through Europe’s Common Agricultural Policy. Possible explanations for this include restrictions on farmland use and farmland ownership structures held over in former communist countries where farms were owned by the state. These factors are likely to affect potential farmland owners’ perceptions of property rights and their willingness to pay a full market value for land.
