The characterization of urban mobility and interactions between users of the subway in São Paulo with the artwork installed and the space station, the city and its art design processes of mediation that have assumed the importance of promoting micro urban formed disintegrate the movement of contagion and the architecture itself from one place to an increase infrastructural support, be that builds and strengthens with joints, with a beyond himself to be strengthened by the public , ie, the city and its inhabitants, noting its urban dimension. This paper aims to elaborate on the production categories contemporary urban space and its pragmatic results, focusing on event, disjunction and reframing. The method was chosen selection of some of the subway stations of São Paulo, between them, the stations Cathedral Tamanduateí and Sumaré, whose spaces acquire other meanings from the multitude of spatial experience, as evidenced by the interaction with other media, such as the Underground Art Project. It seeks to understand these spatialities as key to an understanding of the relationships between architectural and urban dimensions, and issues that are reflected by its characteristic urban articulators. In disciplinary analysis in the light of experience of confronting urban, developed by some authors, philosophers, sociologists and planners considering its conflicts, possibilities, assemblages, a concept developed by Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guatari (1999) which corresponds to a geography of relations , gives consistency and unite heterogeneous elements and their relationships, working symbiosis, but always assuming territories. The city has always been linked to forms of public expression, so that the disappearance of the public environment is also disappearing urban life. For Flusser (1983), São Paulo is not a real city, it lacks, next to the private (oikos) and the politician (now), the cultural dimension, as in the synthesis of these three determinations is urban life. Urban art is a form of public communication, catalyst active and confrontational discourse, an important achievement in producing this environment; the architecture should stand as critical practice, as a productive force of interaction and foster the development of new forms of space public and experiences.

The Programmatic Generation of Discrete-Event Simulation Models from Production Tracking Data

Smith, Christopher Rand 01 March 2015 (has links)
Discrete-event simulation can be a useful tool in analyzing complex system dynamics in various industries. However, it is difficult for entry-level users of discrete-event simulation software to both collect the appropriate data to create a model and to actually generate the base-case simulation model. These difficulties decrease the usefulness of simulation software and limit its application in areas in which it could be potentially useful. This research proposes and evaluates a data collection and analysis methodology that would allow for the programmatic generation of simulation models using production tracking data. It uses data collected from a GPS device that follows products as they move through a system. The data is then analyzed by identifying accelerations in movement as the products travel and then using those accelerations to determine discrete events of the system. The data is also used to identify flow paths, pseudo-capacities, and to characterize the discrete events. Using the results of this analysis, it is possible to then generate a base-case discrete event simulation. The research finds that discrete event simulations can be programmatically generated within certain limitations. It was found that, within these limitations, the data collection and analysis method could be used to build and characterize a representative simulation model. A test scenario found that a model could be generated with 2.1% error on the average total throughput time of a product in the system, and less than 8% error on the average throughput time of a product through any particular process in the system. The research also found that the time to build a model under the proposed method is likely significantly less, as it took an experienced simulation modeler .4% of the time to build a simple model based off a real-world scenario programmatically than it did to build the model manually.

Job for Organ: Programmatic Implications Drawn From Petr Eben's Musical Language

Vinyard, Lawrence Marvin January 2010 (has links)
Job for Organ is an eight movement organ cycle by the Czechoslovakian composer Petr Eben (1929-2007). This work is based upon the story of Job in the Old Testament. Eben perceived the dramatic depth of the Book of Job and created a musical work that vividly portrays the consequences of a wager between Satan and God on the fate of a human being--in this case, Job. The eight movements of this cycle tell the story of Job's struggle, perseverance, and triumph in the midst of human suffering. Job remains faithful to God throughout his trials, and in the end God rewards him for his faithfulness. This document thoroughly explores the methods Petr Eben used to illustrate the story of Job, as a musical program, in the organ cycle Job for Organ. My purpose is to find connections between the program and Eben's compositional techniques. This study focuses upon three specific musical devices and how each device is used to portray a musical program: musical quotations, associative themes, and dramatic musical contrasts.I isolate the musical quotations utilized in this cycle and demonstrate how each quotation supports the program. I identify associative themes and their interrelationships and demonstrate how these devices dramatize the story as it was written in the Book of Job. Associative themes include the canon, passacaglia, and numerous motives, textures, and melodies, all crafted to symbolize portions of the narrative as it unfolds. I demonstrate Eben's use of dramatic musical contrasts to convey a musical program, including the juxtaposition of tonal and polytonal harmonies, sudden changes in timbre and (or) dynamics, abrupt rhythmic interjections, the use of unique textures, unusual melodic and harmonic transformations, and changes in registration, dynamics, meter, and range. A complete list of the devices Petr Eben used to illustrate programmatic intent in the organ cycle Job for Organ would be quite extensive. Although there is no unimpeachable way of proving that my conclusions represent the way Eben intended the listener to interpret his work, my suggestions represent logical and plausible associations between musical devices and programmatic intent based upon a thorough examination of Job for Organ. Eben's compositional technique is dramatic in nature and his music lends itself to theatrical interpretation. This document provides a detailed musical analysis of each movement of the work, and the author offers a possible recreation of the plot and its interpretation, based upon extensive analysis of the score and Petr Eben's program notes. Detailed graphic maps of each movement vividly portray the musical themes, textures, musical quotations, dramatic musical contrasts, and their interrelationships, and reveal a fabric of allusion that suggests a plausible programmatic basis for this composition based upon these musical devices. The analysis demonstrates that Job for Organ is a product of utmost craftsmanship. It is a powerful musical drama that vividly portrays Job's ordeal utilizing an extended musical program.

An Overview of Progress towards RBM Objectives and MDGs Concerning Malaria in the Americas: A Comparative Analysis of Data from the Years 2000 and 2005

Ahmad, Sardar 12 November 2007 (has links)
This study analyzed the malaria situation in 21 malaria endemic countries in the region of the Americas to assess progress towards achieving Roll Back Malaria objectives (RBM) and Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The study analyzed data from the years 2000 and 2005, which also highlighted various interventions that were underway to improve the malaria situation in the region during this period. Data from the year 2000 were used as a baseline both for RBM objectives as well as for MDGs. Findings of the study indicated the region of the Americas has made progress toward reducing the burden of malaria as a public health burden and this itself is a reflection of progress towards achieving the two global targets. Outcomes of the study also revealed some programmatic strength that might help the region to embark on a more comprehensive, interdisciplinary malaria elimination strategy in the majority of the region’s countries.

SOCIAL CATEGORIES AND HEALTH CARE OUTCOMES: AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN AND HIV SURVIVAL IN THE URBAN SOUTH

O'Daniel, Alyson J. 01 January 2010 (has links)
This ethnographic research examines the daily life and institutional conditions under which low-income Black women in urban North Carolina perceived and attended to HIV health-related needs. I focus specifically on the interplay among women’s living conditions, programmatic service needs, and their strategies for navigating the local system of care to explore and refine the categorical label “low income.” I found that there were significant differences among study participants in terms of their monthly incomes and financial resources, housing quality and status, and personal experiences with incarceration and substance abuse. The economic differences among women translated into social differences within the context of federally-funded AIDS care programs. Social differences were realized as the differential ability to transform programmatic services enrollment into beneficial social networks. Ultimately, financially stable women were better positioned than their more economically vulnerable counterparts to reap the economic and social benefits of programmatic services eligibility and enrollment. It is in this context that I explore federally-funded AIDS care services as one social field through which processes of class unfold and articulate with processes of race and gender.

Beneath the Dancing Moon: A Composition for Woodwind and Percussion Ensemble

Pang, Law Ma Rome Anne 12 1900 (has links)
The composition is scored for the following instruments: 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons and a large percussion section requiring 7 performers. Beneath the Dancing Moon is a programmatic piece in one movement form composed of 5 continuous sections. It depicts a night scene when the elves begin to dance beneath the moon. Later, the moaning ghosts from the dark forest and the witches with brooms come to join them. They dance furiously until the moon disappears, the sea stops dead and all the dancers suddenly vanish. The approximate performance time is 17 minutes.

Programmatic Advertising: A Quantitative Study of Consumer Attitudes Towards Highly Frequent Online Ads

Högström, Julia, Wallin, Ellen January 2017 (has links)
Because of the adaptation to technological and social changes, the advertising environment is constantly evolving and today the central part of online advertising is called Programmatic advertising. It’s an automated media buying technique that involves targeting individual consumers in real-time. However, previous research shows that high frequency is one of the most important issues within programmatic advertising and not all ads bought programmatically is in frame of a good frequency. Furthermore, theories indicate that frequency influences consumers’ attitudes towards advertising, which lead to our research question: “How does high frequency exposure affect consumers’ attitudes towards programmatic advertising?” The purpose of this research is therefore to get a deeper understanding of how highly frequent exposure of programmatic advertising affect consumers’ attitudes towards it. We found that Irritation, Invasiveness, Likeability of relevance and Recognition are terms examined in previous studies related to individually targeted advertising or frequently exposed advertising. In order to carry out an explanatory research, we measured these variables including frequency with a quantitative survey and made statistical calculations such as correlation and regression analyses to see if our hypotheses were supported. The analyses indicated average causal relationships between Frequency and Irritation as well as between Frequency and Likeability of relevance whereas the causal relationships between Frequency and the other two variables were weak. We concluded based on our study that highly frequent exposed programmatic advertising is affecting consumer attitudes both positively with relevance, and negatively causing irritation. However, the relevance that comes with programmatic advertising generates a stronger feeling of likeability than of irritation.

High street abattoir : a new interface for architecture of industry mediated through a public abattoir

Nieuwoudt, Jankel Herman 05 January 2012 (has links)
The dissertation investigates an interface between industrial architecture, the public realm and formal and informal programmatic functions mediated through an urban abattoir. Further, the dissertation examines the occupation of a deserted industrial site and revival thereof through new light industrial programming. The proposal focusses on the rejuvenation of the abattoir as a ritualistic and cognisant process and the contemporary application of the industrial typology mediated through regenerative architectural principles and sustainable technologies. A new public interface is explored to reconnect industrial architecture and industry to the “urban surface”, avoiding the mistakes of the past and preserving the future of the site and its surrounding context. The final design ameliorates the deserted wasteland condition by connecting the new abattoir to the industrial heritage of the site. The resultant design is an urban abattoir which interacts and expresses itself at various scales whilst always representative of the processes housed. The design creates a dialogue between the public and the abattoir by adopting the methodology of reclaiming the entire animal carcass as done in South African ritual slaughter. The design incorporates numerous sustainable systems to reduce the waste found in abattoirs. The project reconnects the contemporary abattoir to the productive urban network and emphasises the importance of architecture in the regeneration of a building typology. From scepticism to engagement : Europeanization of the Green Party and Sinn Féin in Ireland inelection campaigns 2009–2020

Kula, Mari-Helen January 2021 (has links)
This study examines the impact of the European Union and the programmatic and policy changes in two Irish political parties, the Green Party and Sinn Féin. The Europeanization concept is the theoretical basis of the study and it is operationalized by the use of EU salience. The study is carried out by content analysis of national and European election manifestos prepared by the parties during the 2009–2020 time period. The findings showed an increased salience on the European Union in national election campaigns by both parties, and in the European Parliament elections by Sinn Féin. A process of Europeanization has taken place in both parties regarding foreign policy and issues related to external relations. The Green Party showed an increased emphasis on the European Union regarding environmental issues. This study contributes to the research on the European impact on national political parties and the increased importance of European level politics in the national systems.

A Statistical Approach for Analyzing Expectations Alignment Between Design Teams and their Project Stakeholders

Goodson, Matthew Christian 21 April 2023 (has links) (PDF)
Successful project management requires continuous communication aligning the expectations between project stakeholders and the project team. Expectations include both product expectations (how the product will look, feel, and perform) and programmatic expectations (timelines, deliverables, expenditure of project resources). In order to make the most effective use of project resources throughout the life of the project, a process or tool for quickly aligning expectations as closely as possible should be employed early on in the project. Project management literature is lacking in tools for aligning expectations, and solutions and best practices need to be determined since the current best option is hiring experienced project managers and hoping they can communicate successfully. This paper lays out the quantitative statistical methods that are needed to evaluate the effectiveness of potential expectations alignment tools in order to determine best practices. Engineering capstone students lack the industry experience aligning programmatic expectations that a good project manager would have. Curriculum may not be addressing the alignment of programmatic expectations, leaving students with blind spots that can lead even the brightest of student teams to fail. Failure to properly align expectations and achieve project goals can then lead to ruined relationships and damage a program's reputation. Using the methodology we propose, we determined that students at Brigham Young University and the United States Air Force Academy have a statistically significant misalignment regarding two major programmatic expectations: design deliverables to be created as part of the project, and the desired technology readiness level the project needed to achieve. It was also determined that these students have a statistically significant bias towards overestimating the importance their sponsors put on creating prototypes. The alignment tool we tested and the alignment measurement methodology we propose provide a groundwork for future development and testing of tools and best practices for quickly aligning design teams' expectations with their stakeholders.
