Pattern and meaning in Francois Couperin's Pieces de Clavecin

Snyder, Caitlin E., 1971- 06 1900 (has links)
xviii, 293 p. : ill., music. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / The synthetic, historically sensitive, analytic method of this dissertation illuminates relationships between pattern and meaning in François Couperin's Pièces de Clavecin --character pieces firmly rooted in traditions of literary portraiture. The method combines aspects of Schenkerian analysis, Gjerdingen's style-sensitive schema, Larson's theory of musical forces, and Lakoff and Johnson's cognitive metaphor theory. It suggests that manipulation of recognizable musical patterns--the manner with which patterns are realized or even withheld--and their narrative contexts may give rise to responses heard as metaphorically reflecting Couperin's evocative titles. Two questions motivate this investigation: Why the virtual absence of François Couperin from modern theoretical discourse? How does musical meaning arise with Couperin's musical portraits? After describing my analytic method, I illustrate its application with several short examples. I then offer two in-depth case studies of different formal structures: an extended theme and variations and an independent binary piece. My findings relate pattern to musical "vocabularies", to context and expressive meaning, and to the theory and practice of music analysis. The focus on pattern illuminates the interaction of vocabularies in Couperin's music--including those of the seventeenth-century French keyboard tradition, the emerging Italian galant style, and the increasingly tonal "high styles" of eighteenth-century church, chamber, and court music. It illustrates how patterns contribute to expression and affect--as well as how they interact with ideas, concepts, or images associated with Couperin's evocative titles. Pattern-based analyses demonstrate that different contexts can give the same pattern different meanings--supporting (rather than contradicting, as others have suggested) the argument that music can have meaning; instead of a single meaning, we encounter a plurality of possibilities. The synthetic analytic approach of this dissertation is ideal for Couperin's music in particular but also for the galant style in general. Moreover, the combination of methods itself illuminates the power and meaning of each individual contributing element. and exemplifies the advantages of (and flexibility inherent to) an analytic method consonant with Lakoff and Johnson's cognitive metaphor theory, suggesting the analytic potential of a synthetic approach for an even broader set of styles. / Committee in charge: Steven Larson, Co-Chairperson, Music; Stephen Rodgers, Co-Chairperson, Music; Lori Kruckenberg, Member, Music; Marc Vanscheeuwijck, Member, Music; Mark Johnson, Outside Member, Philosophy

Eficácia das normas constitucionais programática / Efficacy of programmatic constitucional norms

Carlos Eduardo Nobre Correia 11 May 2012 (has links)
The reason of programmatic constitutional rule is connected to the enunciation of State purposes. The distinguishing feature of programmatic rules is the settlement of targets with no indication of manner to be used in your accomplishment. Social Constitutions have an important task to impose public policies by positive installments through appropriate planning. The research takes a prominent position in juridical scene at the time the Judiciary applies a constitutional rule without the intermediation of the Legislative or Executive, as a mean of effecting social rights, broadening the scope of the standard. The applicability of social rights is subject to the action of the legislature and administration, but simply the failure of the agencies responsible for creating an neutralization of the constitutional command officer, occurring a true reversal of the content of the principle of legal reserve which becomes opposition to social rights serving as a shield for the realization of rights related to employment, welfare, education, health and social care. The assumption of any legal analysis is the elimination of all forms of abuse, it is not possible to device an interpretation that allows the existence of omissions that admit arbitrary acts. The Judiciary has the power and duty to enforce constitutional provisions, especially those relating to fundamental rights and guarantees, but the budget question arises as obstacle to its implementation, since the individual prosecution can not reveal the cost of implementation of public policy, not taking into account factors that affect public finances. Likewise, the lack of legal regulation generates legal uncertain, because there is no uniform of treatment to the claims taken to court, creating the risk of willful decisions that ultimately compromise the government, faced with the affection of state financial resources before the lack of criteria that discipline state action, the recipients, the methodology to restrain abuse and secure the resources to fight the arbitrary acts. This work aims to provide assistance to the interpretation of programmatic norms according to the Brazilian reality depending in the intervention of the Judiciary in matters of public policy in order to contribute to the study to reduce uncertainly and insecurity about the subject.

Interactive Eating Design: A Programmatic Exploration of Food as Design Material Through Games

Ong, Kevin January 2018 (has links)
This thesis project focuses on the practices of eating and play as I explore using food as a material for interaction design through the context of an analog game. Using the action of eating as the main mechanic, participants of my research project are subject to sensations that can only be explored by eating such as taste, hunger, and satiation. The goal is to create a game where food and its consumption can not be substituted with any other action, sense, or material. Through design based research and a playcentric design process I playtest three experiments of which include two mods. Following that I create an original puzzle game and its iteration with two groups in efforts to demonstrate the affordances of different food materials in games. Finally, I assess my process and games through game studies principles such as the MDA framework, the criteria of design based research, and finally propose a program in design research called Interactive Eating Design.

Alfaro Vásquez, Máximo, Rengifo Villanueva, Ronald, Coloma Núñez, Juan Pablo Javier 14 April 2021 (has links)
In the last three decades the so-called .COM culture has caused a revolution as big as the printing press in its time, a revolution that enhanced communications and therefore the way we trade and consume. With a continuous and organic worldwide growth, it has managed to migrate the consumers' habits, forcing traditional media to reinvent themselves or disappear. Our country is no stranger to this change, registering a significant increase in the last 15 years and although the web is still considered as the support of the original business, the exposure of national products worldwide, and transversal businesses have grown exponentially, often obtaining margins in markets where penetration was not expected. In 2010 the number of Peruvians with access to digital information was 34.8%, by 2017 this number was already 48.8% with an average growth of 2% per year; this places the traditional media at a crossroads; but also gives us a great opportunity. Under this opportunity we present our project: a digital platform for sports communication, which thanks to information technologies (Big Data) would direct its contents to the markets that best pay for advertising spaces. The contents will be adjusted in real time according to the information we obtain via SEM and will be worked on in real time by writers specialized in generating controversial and entertaining sports content. This would allow us to capture visits that are loyal and return, and would also be profitable through the sale of spaces via programmatic advertising, thanks to which we will sell our spaces to the best bidders in real time. / Trabajo de investigación

Heart of the Fathers, for Wind Symphony

Anderson, Stephen Reg 05 1900 (has links)
Heart of the Fathers is a programmatic, seven movement work for wind symphony depicting my ancestors and their role as part of the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The movements represent their spiritual experiences, labors, times of joy, persecution, migration, and finally their arrival and success in their new homeland. The piece is organized in seven movements. Each movement represents a different portion of history leading to the western migration of my ancestors. The programmatic music contains a variety of symbols depicting the experiences of the pioneers. In the paper, each chapter addresses an individual movement. For each movement, the following information is provided: the historical events that inspired the piece, the musical symbols that characterize the program, and an analysis of the function of the music.

Programmatic Advertising : Effective marketing strategy or invasion of privacy - A study of consumer attitudes towards Programmatic Advertising

Bolkvadze, Endi, Ekblad, Rebecka January 2022 (has links)
Digital marketing is constantly adapting and evolving in line with technological advances. One of these advances is the digitalization, which has given rise to Programmatic Advertising (PA). In order to practice PA, the companies need to collect data about consumers' preferences and personal interests. On the other hand, consumers have a need to protect their privacy. The needs of these two parties cross each other which creates the tension, called the Personalization-privacy paradox. In this study, we intend to investigate consumers' attitudes towards PA and whether personalization gives rise to improved browsing experiences or evenviolates their privacy. A quantitative study was conducted, where the independent variable was called Personalization and the dependent variables - Attractiveness, Annoyance, Invasiveness and Trade-off. The results of bivariate regression analysis showed that all of the dependent variables of the study were statistically significant. The results also illustrated that the majority of the respondents experienced PA ads as beneficial, but also invasive. These results are in line with the Utility maximization theory, as PA ads were considered both beneficial and risky. Therefore, consumers would have incentives to disclose their personal information as long as the percieved benefits would outweigh perceived risks, generated by PA. We concluded that there are no clear, predetermined answers to what attitudes consumers have towards PA, but this can vary from case to case, which is in line with both the Privacy calculus theory and the Utility maximization theory. This involves a risk-benefit analysis, performed by consumers, where perceived benefits exceeding perceived risks would generate positive attitudes and vice versa

High-level, Product Type-specific Programmatic Operations for Streamlining Associative Computer-aided Design

Scott, Nathan W. 12 August 2008 (has links) (PDF)
Research in the field of Computer Aided Design (CAD) has long focused on reducing the time and effort required of engineers to define three dimensional digital product models. Parametric, feature-based modeling with inter-part associativity allows complex assembly designs to be defined and re-defined while maintaining the vital part-to-part interface relationships. The top-down modeling method which uses assembly level control structures to drive child level geometry has proved valuable in maintaining these interfaces. Creating robust parametric models like these, however, is very time consuming especially since there can be hundreds of features and thousands of mathematical expressions to create. Even if combinations of low-level features, known as User-Defined Features (UDFs), are used, this process still involves inserting individual features into individual components and creating all of the inter-part associativities by hand. This thesis shows that programmatic operations designed for a specific product type can streamline the assembly and component-level design process much further because a single programmatic operation can create an unlimited number of low-level features, modify geometry in multiple components, create new components, establish inter-part expressions, and define inter-part geometry links. Results from user testing show that a set of high-level programmatic operations can offer savings in time and effort of over 90% and can be general enough to support user-specified interface layouts and component cross sections while leaving the majority of the primary design decisions open to the engineer.

[pt] MÍDIA PROGRAMÁTICA: IDENTIFICAÇÃO E RANQUEAMENTO DOS PRINCIPAIS PROBLEMAS E DESAFIOS PARA SUA UTILIZAÇÃO / [en] PROGRAMMATIC MEDIA: IDENTIFICATION AND RANKING OF THE MAIN PROBLEMS AND CHALLENGES FOR ITS USE

CAIO MARCELO BIZERRIL DE OLIVEIRA 29 October 2019 (has links)
[en] Programmatic media enables the automation of the digital advertising delivery process. This implies that advertisers are able to direct their spending directly to the audiences most prone to a particular action (engagement); a purchase, for example. Given this targeting and the advanced customization capabilities of ad delivery, programmatic media spending has grown significantly in recent years, to the detriment of other more traditional media. However, the market shows concerns regarding the transparency of the buying process and the control of the results achieved with its investments. This research aims to raise topics that reveal signs of problems in the use of programmatic media and produce a ranking with these topics. Through an international bibliographic review, 10 topics that indicate problems and through the Delphi method, using a sample of 15 experts working in Brazil, 9 new items were identified as problems or challenges in the use of this tool. A consensus analysis and a ranking were produced to identify the most relevant problems, in order to prioritize actions in the search for solutions.

Wort-Ton-Gestaltung in der Sinfonik Gustav Mahlers

Haller, Silja January 2012 (has links)
Focal point of this thesis is the detailed analysis of selected aspects of the relationship between music and text in Gustav Mahler’s vocal-instru-mental symphonies. Mahler’s elaboration of programmatic intentions functions as background. The composer obviously used the specific quality of music which is able to make spiritual or immaterial facts clearer than language (which here often has to switch over to symbolism). The variety of the text interpretation by Mahler’s music (on which the analyses are focused) shows distinct differences: from a relatively simple setting to music-character to an intense amalgam of music and semantics of the words. An important result of the analyses is the approximate proportionality between independency of Mahler’s music from the text’s formal parameters and intensity of the musical exegesis of the words. The more the music tends to elaborate the semantics, the more decreases the materiality of language. In this context the semantics-music-amalgam in the final movement of Das Lied von der Erde represents an unique example. Ultimately Mahler’s music supplies the denotation of the text semantics. This intermixture shows previously – in the history of development of vocal symphonic tradition – not heard intensity.

Content Analysis of National Strategic Plans on HIV/AIDS and Global AIDS Response Progress Reports from Eight Southeast Asia Countries

Kyaw, Nang Thu Thu, Dr. 17 May 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to explore the national policies, strategies, and programmatic responses on HIV/AIDS in eight Southeast Asia Countries by analyzing the contents of the National Strategic Plans on HIV/AIDS (NSPs) and biennial country progress report to UNAIDS from these countries. METHODS: Thematic content analysis method was used to analyze a total of 24 documents of the National Strategic Plan on HIV/AIDS and Global AIDS Response Progress Report submitted to UNAIDS from Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam. NVivo10 qualitative analysis software was used for coding and organizing documents. RESULTS: 28 main categories with sub-categories emerged from coding and analysis of NSPs and country progress report documents from eight SEA countries. NSPs from all countries significantly failed to tackle key topics in policy, social and economic environment around HIV control such as women empowerment, illiteracy, armed conflicts, natural disaster and humanitarian emergencies. CONCLUSION: In order to align with the global HIV strategy to reach Millennium Development Goals to stop the spread of HIV by 2015, SEA countries should improve their NSPs and progress reports by addressing the political, social, cultural, and economic factors which urgently need to be addressed. New technologies and approaches are important for developing HIV interventions to stop the HIV epidemic, but addressing policy, economic and social environment around HIV epidemic and control in SEA regions is a key for those HIV intervention strategies and programs to be effective in controlling for HIV.
