Homer in the perfect tense : the 'Posthomerica' of Quintus Smyrnaeus and the poetics of impersonation

Greensmith, Emma January 2018 (has links)
The thesis has been written as part of the AHRC collaborative research project Greek Epic of the Roman Empire: A Cultural History. This project seeks to give the first cultural-historical analysis of the large, underexploited corpus of Greek epic poetry composed in the transformative period between the 1st and the 6th centuries C.E. The thesis focuses on questions of literary identity in one of the most challenging texts from this corpus, the Posthomerica by Quintus of Smyrna (c. 3rd century C.E.). My central contention is that Quintus’ mimicry of Homer represents a radically new formative poetics, suggesting a cultural movement towards mimesis, necromancy and close encounters with the past. After a detailed study of what I term the reanimating culture of imperial Greece (chapter 1), and a comprehensive reanalysis of the compositional techniques of the text (chapter 2), I identify a number of tropes of poetic identity from different ancient literary modes: programmatic proems (chapter 3), memory (4), filiation (5) and temporality (6). I show how Quintus co-opts these themes for his new poetics, to turn the symbolic toolkit of contrast imitation into a defence of writing inter-Homeric epic. This analysis insists on rethinking the nature of the relationship between the poetry of this era and that of previous aesthetic traditions: particularly, I argue against a view of the Posthomerica as Alexandrian, and see it instead pushing back against the Callimachus school of small, new poetry. Ultimately, the thesis aims to show how the Posthomerica could be pivotal for unpinning current critical assumptions about imperial Greek poetry; revealing a palpable shift in tone in the construct of the literary self.

Programmatisk handel för optimering av trafikköp : En studie om att skapa ett verktyg som underlättar annonsering baserat på programmatisk handel / Traffic Optimization with Programmatic Buying : A Study on Creating a Tool to Assist Advertisment Based on Programmatic Buying

Bergling, Oscar, Hollstrand, Paulina January 2016 (has links)
Online marketing has resulted in a paradigm shift in the advertisement industry. Programmatic buying is an emerging business model that is very promising for online advertising. In online advertising, revenue maximization is always a key matter for publishers. The purpose of this report is to examine whether programmatic buying can be used in conjunction with other parameters such as Google Adwords or Google Trends to increase profit. This research will provide valuable information regarding how to obtain site visitors at a cheap price while maximizing profit on advertisement shown to those users. We investigate a revenue maximization model that calculates the popularity of a set of news in different countries and compares it to the CPM, Cost-Per-Mille, of the corresponding country. To calculate the popularity, the program uses an API from Google Trends and the CPM data is obtained from the company Adform. Furthermore, we originally planned to also include Google Adwords to estimate the price of traffic acquisition. However, since we found several problems with achieving reasonable estimates for our purpose this parameter has therefore been excluded from the final product. The final product can therefore be seen as a soft indicator of how popular different news are in different countries and what revenue can be expected from corresponding countries.

Factors influencing men's involvement in prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programmes in Mambwe district, Zambia

Tshibumbu, Desire Dinzela 30 November 2006 (has links)
The study aimed at assessing the factors influencing the low involvement of men in prevention of mother-to-child transmission (PMTCT) of HIV programmes in the Mambwe district, Zambia. The factors studied were grouped as knowledge and awareness, socio-cultural, programmatic and demographic characteristics. A quantitative, exploratory study was used and 127 men were interviewed. The major findings were: Knowledge of PMTCT was the strongest factor which was positively associated with the level of men's involvement in PMTCT. Socio-cultural and programmatic factors were found to negatively influence men's involvement (although weakly); and among the demographic characteristics, age and level of education were positively associated with an increase in the level of involvement, while the duration of the relationship with the female partner was negatively associated with the level of men involvement. / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

Factors related to male participation in prevention of mother-to-child transmission of human immunodeficiency virus in three public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Daniel Kinde Getu 10 1900 (has links)
This study aimed at assessing factors related to male participation in PMTCT in three public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. A quantitative, descriptive correlational design was used to assess correlation between male participation and socio-demographics, knowledge and awareness in HIV/PMTCT, socio-cultural belief, programmatic factors and reported risk. Male partners (n=216) were interviewed and reviews of HIV counselling and testing (HCT) acceptance formats were made. The major findings were 54.5% (n=156) males reported receiving HCT during their visit to partner’s antenatal care. Some 71.5 % (n=677) of women were accompanied to labour wards by male partners; 86.5% (n=208) of males accepted intra-partum HCT; 55.1% (n=216) scored above the mean score (10) on a 15-point scale for male participation. Male participation in PMTCT was found to have a statistically significant but weak correlation with educational level (r=0.193), income (r=0.167), PMTCT knowledge and awareness (r=0.172), socio-cultural belief (r=-0.164) and reported risk (r=-0.23). / Health Studies / M.A. (Public Health)

Terra Mirabilis: A Composition for Symphony Orchestra in Three Movements

Kraevska, Sofia 11 March 2009 (has links)
Terra Mirabilis is a three-movement musical composition for symphony orchestra with piano solo inspired by natural landscapes photographed by the composer. The three movement composition and its corresponding landscapes portray three times of a day: early morning (I. The Mists), evening (II. Oceanus), and late night (III. Nocturne). Each chapter is devoted to the discussion of one movement, wherein overall concept and form are addressed, followed by detailed analyses of harmonic structure, motivic and thematic development, orchestration, and representational elements. As a complement to the score and the text, a CD-R audio recording of orchestral mock-ups accompanies this dissertation.

Modification of the Mercosur Social-Labor Declaration (2015): an advance in the construction of the social dimension of the integration process / Modificación de la Declaración Sociolaboral del Mercosur (2015): un avance en la construcción de la dimensión social del proceso de integración

Castello Illione, Alejandro 12 April 2018 (has links)
This contribution analyzes the role fulfilled by International Labor Standards and, specifically, by social clauses in Free Trade Conventions and Agreements, as a way of preventing social dumping and building a social dimension in the globalization and regionalization of economy. The author offers the case of the MERCOSUR Labor and Social Declaration, issued in 2015, which amends that of the year 1998, studying its contents, legal efficacy and supervision mechanisms. He emphasizes the fact that social charters generally limit themselves to recognizing fundamental or basic labor rights already found in the legislation of the member countries, but which are nonetheless useful for hindering attempts to deregulate or relax social and labor provisions.
