Technological innovations in the context of public-private partnership projectsLeiringer, Roine January 2003 (has links)
The idea that the private sector can play an important partin the financing and creation of built assets and thesubsequent operation of public services has gained ground overthe last decade. This development has contributed to the risein public-private partnership (PPP) projects in many countriesand within many areas in the public sector. From theconstruction perspective, these projects are usually creditedas providing real incentives for the actors involved, as wellas creating a business environment that is conducive toinnovation and improved practices, especially in theconstruction phase. This thesis examines the validity of thesestatements in the context of the PPP procurement route and theextent to which the actors involved in the design andconstruction phases are presented with, and able to exploit, opportunities for technological innovation. A multiple- casestudy approach was adopted for the empirical part of theresearch. Four major projects, containing significantconstruction work and completed between 1997 and 2002, werestudied: three in the UK and one in Sweden. Project personnelthe principal actors in the design and constructionphaseswere interviewed at length. Within the findingsthere is evidence that the existence of certain conditions onprojects, and particular actions arising in relation thereto, can lead to a marked propensity towards innovative behaviour. The conclusion is reached that it is possible to implementtechnological innovations successfully on PPP projects, butthat there is reason to be cautious in promoting thisprocurement route as a prescription for success in theconstruction sector. There are inhibitors in the process thathave the potential to limit the amount of innovation achievedon a project. The thesis discusses this matter and identifiesthree key areascommunication and information, achievingtransparency in the applied framework and risk managementin which actions could be taken in order to improve theprospects for realising technological innovation on PPPprojects. The appropriation of risk management tools in projects : the case of the credit agricole bankNieto-Bru, Gisèle 30 November 2009 (has links)
The observation of the difficulties encountered by students in understanding the logic of risk monitoring in a project was at the origin of this thesis. Interviews conducted within banks of the Centre region revealed differences in the levels of maturity in project management and in the appropriation phases. The appropriation of tools by those instrumental in organisation is therefore not self-evident. The aim of this thesis was to consider the psycho-cognitive and social approach to the usage of the tools. Usage of a tool was measured by the intensity of the frequency of its use. A questionnaire was sent out to project managers, members of different services and/or the steering committee within the Crédit Agricole bank. The theorisation of management tools, the dissonance theory and the technology acceptance theory were applied to study the relationship between the tool and its user. The study made it possible to conclude that those who use the tools the most frequently do not feel more obliged to use them than those who use them less often. The former also consider the tools to be easier and more suitable than the less frequent users, but they do not privilege certain types of tool. The originality of the thesis was to introduce the concept of social representation. Hypotheses based on the theory of creation of knowledge, cultural theories and social representation theories are put forward to explain the different usage of the tools. The conclusion was that professional culture has a marked effect on the use of risk management tools in projects.

The failure of conducting software projects is an issue that becomes a concern for
Software Engineering. There are many initiatives to reach process improvement in
software development that intend to reduce these failures.
The software projects are complex by nature and are subject to a number of
uncertainties. Knowing these variables can help managers take decisions to effectively
lead the project to success.
Even with all these initiatives for projects to succeed, uncertainties exist. This
observation means risk management has significant importance.
The goal of this work was to analyze the impact of risk management on the success of
software projects. The implementation of improvements in the risk management process
also aimed to meet the CMMI maturity models and MPS.BR. In this direction, a case
study in a software development organization was conducted.

de pós-graduação em design da UFPE / Project Management has been affirming itself as a factor of great relevance in the present
time for the development of Projects. According to Mansur (2009), the rate of succeed
projects in Brazil has been increasing due to the success of the project management
initiatives and techniques. On the other hand, managing intensive design projects is not a
simple task because, in addition to the common needs to any project, design intensive
projects always deal with the development of a new artifact, and for this creative
characteristic, they require a lot of attention to special conditions. To facilitate this task
there are numerous methodological support tools developed by authors and scholars from
administration, engineering and technology areas. However, the records of these tools are
scattered, difficult to be used by the designer who do not find simple descriptions or a
catalog that classifies tools and facilitate their access and knowledge. In this context, this
research is the result of exploration of project management tools applied to design projects.
From the studies on project management and some methodologies such as Pmbok, IPMA,
Scrum, Kanban and Extreme Programming, reflected on the peculiarities of design project.
It was possible to create a classification and presentation model with a sample of 38
management tools in a simple and self-explanatory format applied on design intensive
projects examples. For this, qualitative tests were carried out with a group of eight
designers, where they could test hypothetical classification proposals and help in the
adjustments of these proposals and thus in the construction of the model. This work is the
result of a research to obtain the master's degree in design at UFPE.

This research paper proposes the development of a Hybrid Management Model for Biotechnological projects for StartUp Biodynamols; The proposal of the model is based on the need of the company to manage the projects in an optimal way, since they are research projects, they contain a high degree of uncertainty in the initial phases and specific and planned processes in the final stages of the project. In the same way, biotechnological projects in Peru, for the most part, remain in the initial phases, not having a structure that allows them to be scalable towards commercialization stages.
Considering these aspects, both the lack of a specific model for this type of projects and the need to scale the projects through a structure, the creation of the Hybrid Model is proposed, which integrates the adaptive approach for the development of the initial phases and the Predictive approach to the final phases of it. In the development of the following sections, the processes required for both approaches will be established, as well as the inputs, tools and techniques and outputs of each of the processes identified. / Trabajo de investigación

Assessing the Impact of Regulation on the Performance of Power and Pipeline ProjectsJanuary 2020 (has links)
abstract: The International Energy Agency (IEA) anticipates the global energy demand to grow by more than 25% by 2040, requiring more than $2 trillion a year of investment in new energy supply (IEA, 2018). With power needs increasing as populations grow and climate extremes become more routine, power companies seek to continually increase capacity, improve efficiency, and provide resilience to the power grid, such that they can meet the energy needs of the societies they serve, often while trying to minimize their carbon emissions. Despite significant research dedicated to planning for industrial projects, including power generation projects as well as the pipeline projects that enable power generation and distribute power, there are still endemic cost overruns and schedule delays in large scale power generation projects. This research explores root causes of these seemingly systemic project performance issues that plague power generation projects. Specifically, this work analyzes approximately 770 power and pipeline projects and identifies how project performance indicators (i.e., cost and schedule performance) as well as planning indicators, compare in two regulatory environments, namely nonregulated and regulated markets. This contributes explicit understanding of the relationship between project performance and regulatory environment, both quantitatively and qualitatively, to the pipeline and power project planning and construction bodies of knowledge. Following an understanding of nonregulated versus regulated markets, this research takes a deeper dive into one highly-regulated power sector, the nuclear power sector, and explores root causes for cost overruns and schedule delays. This work leverages gray literature (i.e., newspaper articles) as sources, in order to analyze projects individually (most academic literature presents data about an aggregated set of projects) and understand the public perception of risks associated with such projects. This work contributes an understanding of the risks associated with nuclear power plant construction to the nuclear power plant construction body of knowledge. Ultimately, the findings from this research support improved planning for power and pipeline projects, in turn leading to more predictable projects, in terms of cost and schedule performance, regardless of regulatory environment. This enables power providers to meet the capacity demands of a growing population within budget and schedule. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering 2020
