Honey from Maggots: Aura, Sacrifice, and the Human Universe in Charles Olson’s “The Kingfishers”

Roethle, Christopher 06 September 2017 (has links)
In this thesis, I contend that some form of aura can be recovered from the ravages of technological reproduction described in Walter Benjamin’s “The Work of Art in the Age of its Technological Reproducibility (Third Version).” Recovering this aura, however, may require adopting an aesthetic of immediacy through destruction and even wanton disposability (what Georges Bataille in his general economic theory calls “nonproductive expenditure”) to ensure that, though routinely diluted and discarded, the split-second authenticity of a work remains, its radical ephemerality and formal irreproducibility opposing the enslaving, commodifying powers of the copy. The poetry and poetic theory of American poet Charles Olson, especially in his long poem “The Kingfishers” and his essays “Projective Verse” and “Human Universe,” serves as an example of how an author might inscribe auratic energy along nonproductive, general economic lines.

A concepção sócio-histórica auxiliou a compreender alguns aspectos deste estudo. / There are many discourses about sexuality in the family, school, and mass communication nowadays. The information is diverse and also is the means of access to it. I can be observed a change in the repressive discourse that intended to impende the manifestation of sexuality to a discourse that is also repressive that incentives the sexual practices from rules of morals, and the person cannot reflect about them with autonomy. Although the adolescent of today lives with an explicit and frequent discourse about sexual issues, the access to accurate information that can be incorporated in an emancipating sexual education is still precarious: maybe because of this, the teen pregnancy levels are so high in Brazil. The event of unplanned pregnancy in the adolescence reflects a whole of inter-related varieties, mainly the ones of psychosocial nature. In this sense, the objective of this study was to investigate, starting from the account of 12 adolescent mothers originating from of economic class not favored, aged from 15 to 18 years old, the psychosocial aspects that involve the teen pregnancy focusing on the sexual education, the sexual and reproductive life, as well as, the justifictions to the pregnancy occurence. The applied tools were a questionnaire to investigate socio-demographic data and knowledge about contraceptive methods, and also a projective research, with eight fictional stories, to investigate the psychosocial aspects related to teen pregnancy. The analysis was qualitative starting from thematic categories elaborated by the participants account (analysis of content). The sociohistorical conception helped to understand some aspects of this study. The results show that, according to the adolescent's report, three had concluded the medium teaching; eight of them had their first sexual relation between 14 and 15 years old, getting pregnant a year later. Polotělesa a planární funkce / Semifields and planar functions

Hrubešová, Tereza January 2018 (has links)
The aim of this diploma thesis is to introduce the topic of semifields and to explain its connection with planar functions. From its beginning the thesis leads to the formulation of relation between commutative se- mifields of odd order and planar Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials, which R. S. Coulter and M. Henderson introduce in their article from 2008. At the beginning of the thesis there is a short introduction to projective and affine planes. The thesis further describes coordinatization of projective plane by planar ternary ring. It also aims to investigate properties of ternary ring depending on the number of perspectivities in the projective plane. One of the chapters is dedicated to the isotopy of loops, which can be applied directly on the isotopy of semifields. The thesis mainly focuses on the proof of denoted correspondence between commutative semifields of odd order and planar Dembowski-Ostrom polynomials. Finally, several corrolaries of this relation and the isotopy of semifields are declared. 1

Considerações sobre o psicodinamismo de famílias homoparentais femininas: uma visão psicanalítica / Considerations about the psychodynamics of female homoparental families: a psychoanalytical vision.

Ana Laura Moraes Martinez 16 December 2011 (has links)
Families nowadays bare arrangements that go beyond the traditional model of the heterosexual nuclear family. One of these \"new\" configurations, which has been getting more and more social notability, regards the homoparental family, composed by two men or two women and their children, having access to filiation granted by adoption, artificial insemination, or co-parenthood. Different from other configurations, which are more traditional, the homoparental family causes heated debate because it is seen as a threat to the established social norm, based on the differences between sexes. Some branches of psychoanalysis have been positioning themselves radically against homoparenthood, for they perceive it as an institution that denies the difference between the sexes. In face of this heated debate, the present work aimed at investigating the psychodynamics of three female homoparental families and how parental care has been and is performed in these families. The psychoanalytical referential was used, both in technical and methodological terms, to build the analysis of the data: individual interview with each member of the couple; use of the projective instrument Family Drawing with Stories; Diagnosis Family Interview and feedback to the members of the couple. The data were transcribed right after every contact, based on the psychoanalytical narrative model. As a result, it has been observed a predominance of pre-genital primitive anguishes in these couples, which developed an important role in their homosexuality. Such anguishes, which could not be adequately elaborated, have permeated the parental care provided by such families, interfering in the relationship between partners. In the two families in which homoparenthood happened through co-parenthood, a repetition of the pre-edipian conflicts in the affective and parental relationship was observed, with the predominance of persecution experiences and fragmentation threats in face of the object loss. In the family in which homoparenthood was obtained through artificial insemination, a predominance of primitive anguishes related to the self-object separation was observed, either in the relationship between the partners or in the relationship between them and their two children. In face of such data, it is suggested that all the interlocutors who contemplate and work with homoparenthood be able to equip themselves with specific knowledge about the anguishes and difficulties such families face, not meaning to stigmatize them or stop them from fulfilling their parenthood dream, but meaning to aid them in this process which, according to what the data have shown, was experienced by them with great amounts of anguish.

Cr-invariantes para superfícies em R^4 / Cr-invariants for surfaces in R^4

Jorge Luiz Deolindo Silva 28 January 2016 (has links)
In this thesis we study the extrinsic geometry of smooth surfaces in R4 via their contact with lines and hyperplanes. Uribe-Vargas introduced a cr-invariant (crossratio) at a cusp of Gauss of a surface in R3. For a surface in R4, the point P3(c) has similar behavior to that of a cusp of Gauss of a surface in R3. We establish in this thesis cross-ratio invariants for surfaces in R4 in an analogous way to Uribe- Vargass work for surfaces in R3. We study the geometric locii of local and multilocal singularities of ortogonal projections of the surface and classify the k-jets of parametrizations of germs of surfaces in the projection space P4 given in Monge form by projective transformations. The cross-ratio invariants at P3(c) points are used to recover two moduli in the 4-jet of the projective parametrization of the surfaces.

Validating the positivity projective technique

Meiring, Elsmie 05 June 2012 (has links)
M. Comm. / The assessment and measurement of positive psychology have been largely survey driven, given the way in which this domain’s focus areas have been operationalised. The disadvantage of using surveys in the measurement of positive psychology is that measurement is to an extent ‘disembodied’ in this approach, meaning that positive psychology is reduced to a mental activity – something which implies the negation of the physical. The purpose of the study was therefore to explore to what extent an alternative instrument, the Positivity Projective Technique (PPT), based on embodiment theory, serves as a valid projective technique for eliciting positivity. Data were collected by means of a sentence completion technique (SCT) whereafter it was quantitatively (to a limited extent) and qualitatively analysed by means of a content analysis. The results were similar to, but greater in number than, the variables proposed by formal theories/models of positivity. Given the results, the PPT seems to be a valid projective technique of positivity and may be applied for positive developmental purposes within individual, organisational and consumer contexts.

The Grothendieck Gamma Filtration, the Tits Algebras, and the J-invariant of a Linear Algebraic Group

Junkins, Caroline January 2014 (has links)
Consider a semisimple linear algebraic group G over an arbitrary field F, and a projective homogeneous G-variety X. The geometry of such varieties has been a consistently active subject of research in algebraic geometry for decades, with significant contributions made by Grothendieck, Demazure, Tits, Panin, and Merkurjev, among others. An effective tool for the classification of these varieties is the notion of a cohomological (or alternatively, a motivic) invariant. Two such invariants are the set of Tits algebras of G defined by J. Tits, and the J-invariant of G defined by Petrov, Semenov, and Zainoulline. Quéguiner-Mathieu, Semenov and Zainoulline discovered a connection between these invariants, which they developed through use of the second Chern class map. The first goal of the present thesis is to extend this connection through the use of higher Chern class maps. Our main technical tool is the Steinberg basis, which provides explicit generators for the γ-filtration on the Grothendieck group K_0(X) in terms of characteristic classes of line bundles over X. As an application, we establish a connection between the J-invariant and the Tits algebras of a group G of inner type E6. The second goal of this thesis is to relate the indices of the Tits algebras of G to nontrivial torsion elements in the γ-filtration on K_0(X). While the Steinberg basis provides an explicit set of generators of the γ-filtration, the relations are not easily computed. A tool introduced by Zainoulline called the twisted γ-filtration acts as a surjective image of the γ-filtration, with explicit sets of both generators and relations. We use this tool to construct torsion elements in the degree 2 component of the γ-filtration for groups of inner type D2n. Such a group corresponds to an algebra A endowed with an orthogonal involution having trivial discriminant. In the trialitarian case (i.e. type D4), we construct a specific element in the γ-filtration which detects splitting of the associated Tits algebras. We then relate the non-triviality of this element to other properties of the trialitarian triple such as decomposability and hyperbolicity.

A measure for the number of commuting subgroups in compact groups

Kazeem, Funmilayo Eniola 31 July 2019 (has links)
The present thesis is devoted to the construction of a probability measure which counts the pairs of closed commuting subgroups in infinite groups. This measure turns out to be an extension of what was known in the finite case as subgroup commutativity degree and opens a new approach of study for the class of near abelian groups, recently introduced in [24, 27]. The extremal case of probability one characterises the topologically quasihamiltonian groups, studied originally by K. Iwasawa [30, 31] in the abstract case and then by F. K¨ummich [35, 36, 37], C. Scheiderer [45, 46], P. Diaconis [11] and S. Strunkov [48] in the topological case. Our probability measure turns out to be a useful tool in describing the distance of a profinite group from being topologically quasihamiltonian. We have been inspired by an idea of H. Heyer in the present context of investigation and in fact we generalise some of his techniques, in order to construct a probability measure on the space of closed subgroups of a profinite group. This has been possible because the space of closed subgroups of a profinite group may be approximated by finite spaces and the consequence is that our probability measure may be approximated by finite probability measures. While we have a satisfactory description for profinite groups and compact groups, the case of locally compact groups remains open in its generality.

Characterizations of Some Combinatorial Geometries

Yoon, Young-jin 08 1900 (has links)
We give several characterizations of partition lattices and projective geometries. Most of these characterizations use characteristic polynomials. A geometry is non—splitting if it cannot be expressed as the union of two of its proper flats. A geometry G is upper homogeneous if for all k, k = 1, 2, ... , r(G), and for every pair x, y of flats of rank k, the contraction G/x is isomorphic to the contraction G/y. Given a signed graph, we define a corresponding signed—graphic geometry. We give a characterization of supersolvable signed graphs. Finally, we give the following characterization of non—splitting supersolvable signed-graphic geometries : If a non-splitting supersolvable ternary geometry does not contain the Reid geometry as a subgeometry, then it is signed—graphic.
