COMBUSTION CHARACTERISTICS OF ADDITIVELY MANUFACTURED GUN PROPELLANTS

<p>Additive manufacturing of gun propellants is an emerging and promising field which addresses the limitations of conventional manufacturing techniques. Gun propellants are manufactured using wetted extrusion, which uses volatile solvents and dies of limited and constant geometries. On the other hand, additive techniques are faced with the challenges of maintaining the gun propellant’s energetic content as well as its structural integrity during high pressure combustion. The work presented in this thesis demonstrates the feasibility of producing functioning gun propellant grains using vibration-assisted 3D printing, a novel method which has been shown to extrude extremely viscous materials such as clays and propellant pastes. At first, the technique is compared to screw-driven additive methods which have been used in printing gun propellant pastes with slightly lower energetic content. In chapter two, diethylene glycol dinitrate (DEGDN), a highly energetic plasticizer, was investigated due to its potential to replace nitroglycerin in double base propellants with high nitroglycerin content. A novel isoconversional method was applied to analyze its decomposition kinetics. The ignition and lifetime values of diethylene glycol dinitrate were obtained using the new isoconversional method, in order to assess the safety of using the plasticizer in a modified double base propellant. In chapter three, a modified double base propellant (M8D) containing DEGDN was additively manufactured using VAP. The printed strands had little to no porosity, and their density was nearly equal to the theoretical maximum density of the mixture. The strands were burned at high pressures in a Crawford bomb and the burning was visualized using high speed cameras. The burning rate equation as a function of the M8D propellant as a function of pressure was obtained. Overall, this work shows that VAP is capable of printing highly energetic gun propellants with low solvent content, low porosity, with high printing speeds, and which have consistent burning characteristics at high pressures. </p>

Cathode Erosion and Propellant Injection System of a Low-Voltage, Liquid-Fed Pulsed Plasma Thruster

<p>Prior to the mid-20th century, the idea of electric propulsion had been all but a foreign one that manifested itself in the topic of science fiction. It was around this time when companies and agencies like NASA began to take interest in the topic of space propulsion, as most famously seen in the landing of the Apollo 11 mission on the moon. It was not until the early-1960s where the idea of a pulsed plasma thruster was first realized, with its first test being in 1964 aboard the Russian Zond-2 satellite which contained 6 ablative Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, or “Teflon”) pulsed plasma thrusters.</p> <p>In this paper, a new low-voltage, liquid-fed pulsed plasma thruster was developed, tested, and characterized. This project took influence from the previous low-voltage, liquid-fed pulsed plasma thruster in Purdue’s EPPL and desired to transition it from a current gas-fed system to its intended liquid-fed system. The two main objectives for this project included conducting direct studies of the cathode’s erosion rate using a simple weighing method after simulating a lifetime of discharging the thruster, and completing the initial design of the liquid-fed pulsed plasma thruster using AF-M315E as its propellant while gathering data on its required breakdown voltage, exhaust velocity, and specific impulse.</p> <p>Both objectives were successfully completed, with the following parameters being measured or calculated. The required breakdown voltage was seen to be less than 26kV to keep the ignition spark inside the chamber. For the subsequent results measured however, the breakdown voltage was kept between 10-16kV for all successive tests. The peak current measured for all discharges was an average of 11kA, far exceeding similar geometries such as MPD thrusters. The operational voltage was less than 200V, although an operational voltage closer to 100V is expected after further optimization of the system is completed. The erosion rate of the tungsten cathode at this operational setting was found to be 15.4046 +/- 0.592 microgram/Coulomb which is much less than the cathode spot erosion rate reported for tungsten in literature of about 60 microgram/Coulomb and is beneficial for extending system lifetime. The exhaust velocity was calculated to be 30.6 +/- 4.8km/s which is typical of state-of-the-art PPT electric propulsion devices. The specific impulse was also extrapolated from the ion’s exhaust velocity, calculating to be 3,119 +/- 489 seconds. Future work would require optimization of the propellant injection mechanism to minimize propellant loss.</p>

IMPACT BEHAVIOR OF AMMONIUM PERCHLORATE (AP) - HYDROXYL-TERMINATED POLYBUTADIENE (HTPB) COMPOSITE MATERIAL

<p>This work investigated the effects of varying the crystal sizes of ammonium perchlorate (AP) when embedded with a polymeric binder, hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene (HTPB) on impact-induced temperature behavior.  AP and HTPB are the most used oxidizers and fuel binders in the aerospace solid rocket design industry. In this study, samples of 200 µm and 400µm coarse AP crystals in HTPB were constructed using a conventional hand-mixing method. Using a parametric optimization technique such as the Taguchi method, direct-ink-writing as the additive manufacturing process was used for achieving the required shape fidelity in printing HTPB and by introducing ultraviolet polymers to decrease the curing time.</p> <p>A drop hammer experiment in conjunction with an infrared camera was used to study the impact-induced behavior in the conventionally made AP-HTPB samples. The thermal images obtained from the camera at millisecond resolution are invaluable and provide information about distribution across the sample surface, and the evolution of temperature rise observed in the samples which are complex and not easily understood otherwise and therefore help in improving and attaining desired propellant performance. A two-sample t-Test has been utilized to infer the results and statistical nonsignificance has been observed in the highest temperature rises among 200 µm and 400 µm AP-HTPB sample conditions but a difference in temperature distribution has been observed. A much uniform distribution of temperature over the sample surface on impact is observed in thermal images of 200 µm AP-HTPB sample condition compared to 400 µm AP-HTPB sample condition.</p>

Ce travail de thèse rentre dans le cadre d’un projet de recherche appliquée mené à l’Institut National de Criminalistique et de Criminologie s’intitulant « développement d’un système intégral de détection et d’identification de résidus de tir » visant à doter le laboratoire de balistique chimique d’un outil performant pour la recherche et la caractérisation des résidus de tir aussi bien inorganiques qu’organiques. Comme nous l’expliquons dans le chapitre 1, l’analyse des résidus de tir est aujourd’hui essentiellement basée sur la mise en évidence par microscopie électronique à balayage des particules métalliques provenant de l’amorce. Cette pratique a des limites. Introductif, ce chapitre met en lumière la relation entre criminologie et criminalistique, donne un aperçu de la classification des armes et décrit les relations entre les armes de poing, les munitions, les résidus de tir et la criminalistique. La motivation de l’analyse de résidus organiques et plus particulièrement des stabilisants pour poudres propulsives y est aussi expliquée. Le but principal de ce travail étant le développement d’une méthode d’analyse des stabilisants par spectrométrie de masse en tandem couplée à la chromatographie liquide à haute performance (LC-MS/MS), ce premier chapitre aborde de façon détaillée le principe de fonctionnement d’un spectromètre de masse quadripolaire, qu’il soit avec simple quadripôle ou en tandem, et traite avec une attention particulière les aspects relatifs à la production d’ions, l’acquisition des données et la détection des ions. Le chapitre 2 est consacré aux résultats et discussions. Comme point de départ de tous les travaux ultérieurs, l’optimisation du fonctionnement du spectromètre et plus particulièrement la détermination des « ions précurseurs » et des « ions produits » y est traitée en détails. De plus, l’étude de la fragmentation des ions précurseurs y occupe une place prépondérante et conditionne l’établissement d’une méthode de détection et d’acquisition des données. Dans ce même chapitre sont successivement traités la mise au point de la méthode chromatographique pour l’analyse des stabilisants par LC-MS/MS, le couplage LC-MS/MS, la collecte et préparation des échantillons, dont l’extraction sur phase solide (SPE). Disposant des procédures de traitement des échantillons et d’une méthode LC-MS/MS, il nous a été possible de mener l’étude de faisabilité de l’analyse des stabilisants dans les échantillons prélevés sur les mains d’un tireur. Cette étude fait l’objet d’une proposition de publication jointe en annexe. Pour être exploitable en criminalistique, ce travail est complété par une étude sur les fréquences d’observation des stabilisants pour poudres propulsives sur les mains des non-tireurs. L’ensemble des résultats nous permet de dresser un bilan et proposer des perspectives décrites dans le chapitre 3. A cet égard, nous proposons de poursuivre les essais relatifs aux tests de persistance des résidus de stabilisant sur les mains des tireurs et d’entamer une étude sur la caractérisation des résidus de tir de la nitrocellulose. Du point de vue de l’exploitation des acquis de ce travail, nous suggérons que les méthodes et procédures développées soient mises à l’épreuve dans les affaires nécessitant l’analyse des prélèvements effectués sur les vêtements d’un suspect ou d’une victime. Cette mise à l’épreuve permettra de comparer l’efficacité de la méthode LC-MS/MS à celle de la technique SEM/EDX habituellement utilisée. However this technique has its limits and the goal of the thesis was the development of a method for the analysis of the stabilizers (and their derivatives) present in propellant powders with the use of tandem mass spectrometry coupled to high performance liquid chromatography (LC-MS/MS). The introduction highlights the relations between Criminology and Criminalistics; it gives an outline of the classification of weapons, and describes how handguns, ammunitions, gunshot residues and Criminalistics can be linked when investigating criminal cases. The motivation of the analysis of organic gunshot residues and in particular the propellant powder stabilizers is also explained. Chapter 1 deals in detail with the working principle of a quadrupole mass spectrometer, whether it is with a single quadrupole or composed of a tandem mass spectrometer. Important aspects connected with the ion production, the data acquisition and the ion detection are also considered. Chapter 2 presents the results and discussions. It begins with the optimization of the operating conditions of the spectrometer, and focuses more specifically on the determination of “precursor ions" and "daughter ions”. The study of the precursor ion is more important because it is required for the choice of parameters involved in the data acquisition mode. The development of a liquid chromatography (LC) method and the procedures for collecting and preparing the samples are explained. Moreover, Chapter 2 summarizes the results of a feasibility study of the analyses of stabilizers in samples collected from the hands of a shooter. This study was published in a peer reviewed journal [1]. A complementary study on the frequencies of observation of stabilizers on the hands of non-shooter persons is reported at the end the Chapter. The results allow also proposing perspectives which are described in Chapter 3. In this respect, the characterization of nitrocellulose residues and the study of the persistence of stabilizer residues on the hands of shooters should be undertaken. From the practical point of view, the developed methods and procedures should be tested in real cases which involve the analyses of the samples taken from the clothing of suspects and/or victims. These tests should allow an assessment of the LC-MS/MS method compared to the efficiency of the SEM/EDX technique currently used.
