The afterlives of the dissolution of the monasteries, 1536-c.1700

The dissolution of the monasteries (1536-40) was one of the most critical transformations wrought by the English Reformation. It was also perhaps the most visible manifestation of the idea that Henry VIII’s break with Rome was also a break with the medieval past. Yet despite this, historians have paid little attention to how the dissolution was remembered by those who experienced it or to the evolution of this memory in later generations. This thesis probes the nature of the diverse afterlives of the dissolution between 1536 and c. 1700. On one hand, it seeks to account for the persistence of the narratives of monastic corruption and the expediency of suppression propagated by the Henrician regime in the 1530s, which have continued insidiously to shape its modern historiography. On the other, it examines the development of alternative traditions which challenged and interacted with this orthodoxy, highlighting the multivocal and polyvalent character of a memory culture that was dynamic rather than static. The first chapter examines the attempts of the Henrician government to shape the memory of the dissolution in the 1530s and 1540s, and undertakes a re-assessment of the sources that have conventionally been used by historians of the dissolution. It highlights a triumphant Henrician narrative of monastic corruption and iniquity that the remainder of the thesis sets out to test, complicate, and unravel. The second chapter explores the relationship between the dissolution and early modern senses of time, chronology, and history. It asks both how perceptions of the dissolution shifted over time and how the protracted and complicated four-year long process of suppression came to be remembered as the historical event that we know as ‘the Dissolution of the Monasteries’. The third chapter turns away from the temporal dimensions of the memory of the dissolution to explore its material, visual, and spatial aspects. It argues that historians have been preoccupied with an emergent ‘nostalgia’ for the monasteries at the expense of a gentry antiquarian culture that instead promoted a powerful culture of amnesia. It focuses particularly on the neglected subject of converted religious houses, which quite literally embodied efforts to forget the dissolution and the monastic past. The final chapter focuses on local traditions of memory. It deploys evidence of oral culture mediated through antiquarian writing to question previous work on a purely secular, socio-economic memory of the dissolution. It argues that the concept of sacrilege and the emergence of a folklore of the dissolution are key to recovering the religious dimension of local memory cultures. If the thesis begins with an account of Henrician attempts to shape the legacies of the dissolution, it concludes by demonstrating how, by 1700, these memory-making processes were starting to be exposed. This thesis thereby demonstrates the value of exploring the dissolution in terms of its long afterlives. It also argues that the dissolution is a powerful case study of historical memory, raising larger questions about the relationship between contemporary memorialising practices and the models of periodisation inherited by modern scholarship, as well as making a significant contribution to the emergent interest in the memory of the English Reformation.

The liberal Protestant influence on the musical plays of Oscar Hammerstein II circa 1943-1959

This thesis explores the American liberal Protestant religious influences on Oscar Hammerstein II, and investigates how they are manifested in his musical plays written with Richard Rodgers in the period 1943-1959. Identifying these influences, which stem from Hammerstein's Protestant maternal family and from his attendance during his youth at the prominent Universalist church, The Church of the Divine Paternity, enable a widening of the theological engagement with popular culture to include the neglected realm of musical theatre. Having identified the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical play as a particularly powerful popular art form that explores the existential questions faced by human beings, I investigate the previously unexplored Unitarian and Universalist influences on Oscar Hammerstein II, refuting claims that he was part of the Jewish theatrical community on Broadway. Tracing these influences in Hammerstein's lyrics and libretti shows his response to these fundamental questions as human beings seek to create meaning and build identity in relation to that which is ‘other'. Within Hammerstein's personal philosophy I distinguish, the relationship between human beings and God, and the ethical relationships between human beings in community. I begin by exploring the Unitarian moral philosophy and belief in the fatherhood of God found in Carousel, The Sound of Music and Cinderella, and engaging with the Universalist depiction of the restoration period of the soul found in Carousel. Having revealed Hammerstein's liberal Protestant understanding of this relationship, I turn to his social and political activism connecting it to a social gospel understanding of the brotherhood of man and assertion of human unity. Engaging with his ‘American' musicals – Oklahoma!, Carousel, and The Sound of Music - and his ‘Asian' musicals – South Pacific, The King and I, and Flower Drum Song - separately, I question the theological implications of his late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century understanding of human unity have with regard to diversity. Throughout each of his musicals evidence is adduced of an unwavering belief in the progress of humankind onward and upward, as he reveals a significant liberal Protestant understanding of the nature of humanity, the brotherhood of man, and the possibility for human development and change.

Emerging critical social awareness in evangelical theological pilgrimages in the Philippines

In the Philippines, as in the US and UK and elsewhere, evangelical conversion is normally regarded as a ‘turning’ from a life ‘without Christ’ towards a life of ‘faith in Christ’. Traditionally, the potential convert is invited to ‘accept’ or ‘receive’ Christ as personal lord and saviour. Once a decision to ‘accept’ is indicated, the individual is considered ‘born again’ or ‘saved’, whereupon he or she is expected to manifest behavioural signs, such as participating actively in a ‘Bible-believing’ church, while adapting to its distinct ethos. This conversion, however, has not generally led to a commitment to issues of economic or social justice. In the years 1946-1986, Filipino evangelicals have tended to neglect the social question. This is consistently shown in their general silence during the 1972-81 martial law, the 1983 murder of Aquino and the 1986 people power revolution. Historically and theologically, this particularly conservative social disposition may have been influenced by a lopsided emphasis on aggressive evangelism and a general evasion of social questions, especially by US evangelical missionaries who carried the ‘baggage’ of the fundamentalist-modernist debate of the 1920s and 1930s. This theological orientation seems to have been perpetuated, one way or other, by their Filipino converts. That there are in the Philippines examples of previously socially-disengaged evangelical converts who eventually moved towards a socially-engaged path, however, seems to indicate the possibility of a theological re-orientation within this Christian tradition. This study tackles this particular ‘conversion’ or re-orientation within, not away from, the evangelical tradition, with the goal of shedding some light on the nature and possibility of a ‘second conversion’ towards a socially engaged posture. To explore this phenomenon of interest, the study identifies four different trajectories of change exemplified by particular theological pilgrimages travelled by Filipino evangelicals during their adult years. The first trajectory is about the development of a social conscience which benefited from an active involvement in an international evangelical student movement. The second represents a largely noncritical exposure made possible by a protracted career in medical missions that led to a similar awakening to social injustice. The third involves an evangelical who ended up accommodating Marxist social analysis. And the fourth concerns how an underprivileged evangelical managed to attain a second, more critical, perspective on poverty, leading to a commitment to combat economic injustice. These trajectories are explored through extensive interviews with each of the four subjects. Though necessarily limited in scope, the value of this study lies in its potential to gain some insights into factors that have the potential to ‘convert’ or ‘transform’ minds and ideological postures. It thus suggests that, at least in contexts of social and economic polarisation, the evangelical Protestant tradition may not be so inescapably tied to social and political conservatism as is often assumed. The study ends by drawing some wider conclusions about the possibility of a second conversion within the evangelical Protestant tradition.

Esta tese perscruta o modo como Max Weber, na segunda edição de A ética protestante e o espírito do capitalismo, recorre a dois conceitos oriundos da psicanálise freudiana, a saber, os conceitos de angústia e ab-reação. Defende, além disso, que estes devem ser compreendidos como parte de uma constelação na qual estão incluídos ainda dois conceitos de lavra propriamente weberiana: os de desencantamento do mundo e prêmios psicológicos. Com isso, por um lado, joga-se luz sobre uma relação jamais discutida explicitamente por Weber e virtualmente negligenciada pela literatura especializada. Por outro, busca-se sustentar uma compreensão da obra em seu núcleo distinta da atualmente dominante na weberologia, que compreende a explicação weberiana da gênese do espírito capitalista moderno na chave de uma ação racional puramente orientada a valores. / This thesis examines how Max Weber, in the second edition of The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism, makes use of two concepts derived from Freudian psychoanalysis, namely, the concepts of anxiety and ab-reaction. It further argues that these concepts should be understood as part of a constellation in which two other Weberian concepts are included: the disenchantment of the world and psychological premiums. Thus, on the one hand, it sheds light on a relationship that was never explicitly discussed by Weber and has been virtually neglected by specialized literature. On the other, it seeks to maintain an understanding of the core of Webers work distinct from its current dominant reading in Weberology, which understands the Weberian explanation of the genesis of the modern capitalist spirit in the key of a pure value-rational action.

For this, we intend to redeem elements that explain the use of a fictional narrative by Evangelical Press newspaper, nineteenth century. Basearemo us in the history of reading, particularly in Roger Chartier, to show that the relationship between text and reader produces effects not only for the history of reading, but also for anyone who cares to study this subject. In addition, the paper aims to show how the newspaper used this feature and how to set up your receptivity and acceptance by readers Protestants living in Brazil. Within the context of the Rio player, we will analyze the possibility of this encounter with an evangelistic strategy of Protestant missionaries sent to Brazil, from the use of a literary work by a Protestant newspaper. This makes the Evangelical Press and Lucila objects fundamental to our understanding of the formation of the Protestant Brazilian player, representing the corpus of this research. The Evangelical Press rare gathered information about the formation of Protestantism in Brazil. From the periodic setting of the newspaper, with its textuality and layout, one of the goals of this work is to verify the possibility to establish the image of a Protestant reader of the second half of the nineteenth century. The Evangelical Press was a religious periodical, had ads on their pages, news releases and several, including on international events. Why be administered and directed by Protestant Christians, the Evangelical Press brought Brazilian readers that era articles and topics related to the Protestant religion, its doctrine and practice of faith. Moreover, the work aims to unite scientific arguments that show the use of fiction in the newspaper, if it really was a way to convince the reader that was used to follow the journal by fidelity to religious information reliable. / O objetivo principal desta pesquisa é identificar a formação do leitor protestante brasileiro da segunda metade do século XIX, especificamente, da capital da República naquela época, o Rio de Janeiro. Para isso, pretendemos resgatar elementos que expliquem a utilização de uma narrativa ficcional pelo jornal Imprensa Evangélica, do século XIX. Basearemo-nos na história da leitura, particularmente, em Roger Chartier, para mostrarmos que essa a relação entre texto e leitor produz efeitos não só para a história da leitura, mas também para qualquer estudo que se preocupe com este assunto. Além disso, o trabalho buscará mostrar de que modo o jornal se utilizou deste recurso e como se configurou sua receptividade e aceitação pelos leitores protestantes residentes no Brasil. Por ser administrado e dirigido por cristãos protestantes, o Imprensa Evangélica trouxe ao leitor brasileiro daquela época artigos e assuntos ligados à religião protestante, a sua doutrina e prática de fé. Além disso, o trabalho pretende unir argumentos científicos que mostrem a utilização da ficção dentro do jornal, se realmente foi uma maneira de convencer o leitor que estava acostumado a seguir o periódico por fidelidade à informação religiosa confiável.

From our theoretical and bibliographical review, we seek a systematization of facts and foundations that demonstrate the relevance of the Calvinist work ethic and its influence in the development and progress of capitalism and for people management in corporations. Finally, we propose a management model applicable in corporations, based on Christian morals and codes of ethics, in which the focus is on the valorization of the human person, by means of a retrieval of the contribution of the Calvinist work ethic in its origin, regardless of the distortions and progressive secularization that this ethic has undergone with the progression of rationalism and individualism in modernity. / O presente trabalho objetiva demonstrar que a ética protestante, mais especificamente em sua vertente calvinista, pode ser vista como fator essencial na construção de relações de trabalho produtivas, sadias e justas, bem como no desenvolvimento de uma gestão eficaz de pessoas nas corporações. A pesquisa foi desenvolvida a partir da hipótese central de que um dos aspectos fundamentais do espírito do capitalismo é a visão protestante do trabalho como vocação e que na perspectiva calvinista original, essa visão de trabalho estaria de acordo com as Escrituras Sagradas adotadas pelo cristianismo e deveria gerar relações sociais e de trabalho baseadas na justiça. O resgate da visão calvinista do trabalho tem por base a abordagem de autores como Abraham Kuyper e André Biéler, e ao mesmo tempo um engajamento com as perspectivas críticas do protestantismo propostas por Karl Marx e Max Weber, entre outros. A partir da revisão teórica e bibliográfica, aspirou-se sistematizar os fatos e fundamentos que demonstram a relevância da ética calvinista do trabalho e a sua influência no desenvolvimento e progresso do capitalismo e para a gestão de pessoas nas corporações. Por fim, propomos um modelo de gestão aplicável nas corporações atuais, calcado na moral e códigos de ética cristã onde o foco é a valorização do ser humano, por meio do resgate da contribuição de uma ética calvinista do trabalho em suas origens, independentemente das distorções e progressiva secularização que esta ética sofreu a partir da progressão do racionalismo e individualismo na modernidade.

In addition, sought to understand whether a convergence between Psychology and Religion, as cooperative resources, help in the overall health of the individual. A bibliographic review, with field research, was carried out and attended by 12 adult employees, aged between 34 and 64 years, claiming being Christian Protestants. The research was put through spontaneously and voluntarily after the communication about the purpose of the project to all the subjects, and before a written consent of each, in accordance with the guidelines established by the Ethics Committee. The concept of Religious Spiritual Coping and its techniques were used as reference in the field of clinical and health care practice relating to the validation and respect for religious aspects of patients, and also relating to the spirituality in the healing process or health injury . Later, the relevance of religious beliefs was presented, its use in daily life and influence in promoting or not a comprehensive health of respondents, using for this task personal reports. Based on the research carried out, even considering the differences between the described beliefs, results were significantly positive relating to the promotion of health and coping with stressful situations. Further research is suggested with a view to extending the scope of the Brazilian religious culture. / O presente trabalho objetivou verificar através o possível significado das crenças religiosas protestantes e as estratégias de utilização das mesmas na resolução de dificuldades, enfrentamento de doença e saúde; além de ter buscado perceber se uma convergência entre psicologia e religião, como recursos cooperativos, auxiliam na saúde integral do indivíduo. Procedeu-se uma revisão bibliográfica com pesquisa de campo onde participaram 12 colaboradores adultos, com idade entre 34 e 64 anos de confessionalidade cristã protestante. A pesquisa foi realizada de maneira espontanea e voluntária dos sujeitos após informações sobre a finalidade do projeto e assinatura do termo de consentimento livre e esclarecido de acordo com as orientações feitas pelo Comitê de Ética. Utilizou-se o conceito referencial do Coping Religioso Espiritual e suas técnicas no campo da prática clínica e na área da saúde como um todo referente à valorização e respeito dos aspectos religiosos dos pacientes, e a associação da espiritualidade nos processos de cura ou agravo da saúde. Posteriormente foi apresentada a relevância das crenças religiosas, o seu uso na vida prática e sua influência na promoção ou não da saúde integral dos pesquisados, utilizando para esse mister relatos de experiências. Com base na pesquisa realizada, mesmo havendo divergências entre as crenças descritas, os resultados foram significativamente positivos quanto à promoção e enfrentamento de situações estressantes. Sugere-se novas investigações tendo em vista a extensão do campo da cultura religiosa brasileira.

Apart we pray? The struggle of South Africa's Reformed churches to unite a divided nation

This dissertation analyzes the prolonged transition of South Africa’s Reformed churches from bastions of apartheid towards protagonists of racial reconciliation. At the center is the unification process of the Dutch Reformed Church (DRC) and the Uniting Reformed Church of Southern Africa. The two institutions are rooted in the same tradition, with broadly similar doctrines, yet they worship separately in the old racial categories of apartheid. This is not for lack of effort. After 1994, the DRC shifted from proclaiming divine divisions between races, nations and ethnicities to urging inclusivity in the name of Jesus Christ. The limited success so far to integrate the long divided churches reveals an intricate story of religious actors trying to reframe identities and adjust normative frameworks. The story mirrors South Africa’s greater struggle to transcend its past. Part I of this dissertation considers the nationalist civil religion with which the churches bolstered segregation, and its legacy in contemporary South Africa. By drawing comparisons with other religious-nationalist movements, the study shows the impact of religion in sustaining ethnic conflicts with its everyday structures of separation. Through a qualitative study of South Africa’s Reformed churches, Part II investigates what happens with such structures after a conflict dissipates. To what extent have the churches been able to untangle their attachments to particular ethnic and racial identities? An assessment of their unity discourse and its implementation among five communities in the Free State and Western Cape displays a complex role of religious ideas and practices in deepening and mitigating social divisions. At stake here are recently adopted beliefs in inclusivity along with the pressure to adapt to a rapidly pluralizing religious landscape in which the churches’ authority is no longer a given. They have to cooperate across the color line if they wish to retain relevance in society. This study thus highlights dynamics of principles and pragmatism, and of reconciliation and justice. Where historically white congregations are gradually coming to terms with the need to partner with their black neighbors, the latter now prioritize economic equality over reconciliation.
