Formal analysis of a five element psychophysiological structure

Formal analysis of a five-element psychophysiological structure was performed using an interval bisection task. Within a ten second interval, records were obtained of lateral eye movements and the bisection response on each of ten trials. The formal analysis indicated that: 1. The variables of specification and variation express interrelational structure, and can be extended to include subminor relations. The interrelational values were shown to be independent of the placement of individual events. 2. Separate, replicable processes of specification and variation, independent of changes in placement of any single event in the event structure were demonstrated. 3. An overall interrelational process can be described in this situation. / M.S.

Multidimensional Cardioception and Trait Anxiety: Potential Clues from Baroreflex Sensitivity

Interoception, the perception of the body's physiological state, is often studied in relation to emotion processing. Particularly, cardioception has been largely implicated in anxiety. Three related but distinct dimensions of interoception have recently emerged in the literature: sensibility (IS), accuracy (IAC), and awareness (IAW). Divergent findings regarding interoception and anxiety may result from lacking appreciation for interoceptive dimensions. Additionally, the role of cardiovascular afferent feedback in anxiety and interoception is largely unknown. Baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) has been implicated in interoceptive processes yet no known research directly measures this in relation to multidimensional cardioception. The present study aimed to assess the degree to which IS, IAC, IAW, and BRS predict trait anxiety at rest and during anticipatory anxiety. Results partially suggest increased IAC and BRS, but more variable IS and IAW in relation to trait anxiety. Overall, results show complex associations among factors, suggesting increased specificity among the constructs. Results highlight the importance of attention to construct validity and method variance in the study of interoceptive subdomains. Finally, the present study helps to pave the way for continued investigations concerning cardioception in enduring anxiety and the related role of the baroreflex in cardiac afferent processes. / PHD / Interoception, the perception of the body’s physiological state, is often studied in relation to emotion processing. The baroreflex system rapidly modulates activity of the heart in accordance with short-term blood pressure changes. The sensitivity of this homeostatic baroreflex system (BRS) also plays a role in interoceptive processes, yet no known research directly measures this in relation to multidimensional cardioception. The present study aimed to assess the degree to which IS, IAC, IAW, and BRS predict dispositional anxiety at rest and during anticipatory anxiety. Results partially suggest increased IAC and BRS, but more variable IS and IAW in relation to dispositional anxiety. Overall, results show complex associations among factors, suggesting increased specificity among the variables. Results highlight the importance of attention to measurement precision and various ways to assess the dimensions of interoception. Finally, the present study helps to pave the way for continued research concerning perception of the heart’s activity in enduring anxiety and the related role of cardiovascular activity at various levels of conscious awareness. Ultimately, research on this topic is highly important for the eventual improvement of existing therapeutics for individuals regularly experiencing severe anxiety.

Effect of Cell-Specific, Music-Mediated Mental Imagery on Secretory Immunoglobulin A (sIgA)

This study was an investigation of the effects of physiologically-oriented mental imagery on immune functioning. College students with normal medical histories were randomly selected to one of three groups. Subjects in Group 1 participated in short educational training on the production of secretory immunoglobulin A. They were then tested on salivary IgA, skin temperature and the Profile of Mood States (POMS) before and after listening to a 17-minute tape of imagery instructions with specially-composed background "entrainment" music, designed to enhance imagery. Subjects in Group 2 (placebo controls) listened to the same music but received no formal training on the immune system. Group 3 acted as a control and subjects were tested before and after 17 minutes of no activity. Treatment groups listened to their tapes at home on a bi-daily basis for six weeks. All groups were again tested at Weeks 3 and 6. Secretory IgA was analyzed using standard radial immuno-diffusion techniques. Repeated measures analyses of variance with planned orthogonal contrasts were used to evaluate the data. Significant overall increases (p < .05) were found between pre- and posttests for all three trials. Groups 1 and 2 combined (treatment groups) yielded significantly greater increases in slgA over Group 3 (control) for all three trials. Group 1 (imagery) was significantly higher than Group 2 (music) in antibody production for Trials 2 and 3. No group differences were noted in saliva volume or skin temperature, indicating that autonomic physiological mechanisms were not responsible for differences in antibody production. POMS changes more often favored Group 1. Symptomatology, recorded by subjects at weeks three and six, was significantly lower for three symptoms (rapid heartbeat, breathing difficulty, and jaw clenching), again favoring both treatment groups over the control group. Conclusions were that CNS-mediated immunoenhancement through mental imagery is possible.

Cardiovascular Reactivity in Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Depression

Exaggerated cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) to stress has been implicated in the increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) in individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), yet mixed results have been reported. The CVR research may have been confounded by underrepresentation of women, few studies using sophisticated cardiovascular measurement, and a lack of analyses of PTSD symptom clusters. The purpose of the present study was to examine if young civilian women (M ± SD = 29.89±7.33) with PTSD (n=17) demonstrate greater CVR than women with depression (n=12) or no mental illness controls (n=18), and to explore the relationships between CVR and PTSD symptom clusters. Participants were 56% Caucasian, 21% African American, 19% Hispanic, and 4% other. Systolic and diastolic blood pressure (SBP and DBP), heart rate (HR), and impedance cardiography derived cardiac output (CO) and total peripheral resistance (TPR) were utilized to examine CVR during speech preparation/delivery and math tasks. Between-group effects were observed during speech preparation - specifically, lower DBP reactivity for the PTSD group compared to the depression group (p < .05). Between-group effects were also evident during speech delivery, with a trend toward lower DBP reactivity for the PTSD group than the depression group (p <.08), higher CO reactivity for the PTSD group than controls (p <.01), and lower TPR reactivity for the PTSD group than the depression (p <.01) and control groups (p <.01). PTSD severity scores for DSM-IV-TR and DSM-5 were used as independent predictors of CVR in multiple regressions variables. The DSM-IV analysis did not provide significant associations. The DSM-5 yielded significant associations of avoidance and arousal clusters with SBP reactivity during math, a significant association avoidance with DBP reactivity during math, and significant associations of avoidance and arousal with HR reactivity during math. Further exploration of PTSD symptom clusters may provide a clearer picture of the relationship between PTSD/CVR. Higher reactivity and lower reactivity may both be associated with risk for CVD, albeit through separate mechanisms.

Depression and Empathy Predict Emotion-Modulated Startle Reactivity

Research supports varied patterns of emotion-modulated startle (EMS) reactivity among depressed individuals. The purpose of this study was to examine whether these varied patterns can be explained by depression, empathic tendencies, and emotional stimuli. The EMS paradigm is a well-validated measure of emotion-modulated reactivity in which the magnitude of startle reflexes in reaction to acoustic stimuli are recorded while participants view pleasant, neutral, and negative images (Lang, Bradley, & Cuthbert, 1990). Young adults (N = 120; Mage = 19.54, SD = 1.41; 75% female) completed self-report rating scales of depression symptoms and cognitive and affective empathic tendencies and the EMS paradigm. Individuals with low depression, regardless of their cognitive (hp2 = .44 and .47) and affective empathic tendencies (hp2 = .49 and .36), and individuals with high depression and high cognitive and affective empathic tendencies (hp2 = .23, .46, respectively) exhibited the typical linear EMS reactivity pattern of increasing startle reflex magnitude from pleasant to neutral to unpleasant images. In contrast, individuals with high depression along with low cognitive and affective empathic tendencies exhibited blunted EMS reactivity patterns (hp2 = .000, .04, respectively). These findings indicate blunted EMS reactivity patterns only in depressed individuals who have low cognitive and affective empathic tendencies and are likely disengaged from emotional stimuli, thus suggesting variability among depressed individuals in motivational states that prime or inhibit the startle reflex.

Reward and Anxiety: From Rodent Post-Traumatic Stress to Human Psychosocial Stress

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a chronic disabling condition that results from exposure to traumatic stress. However, although trauma is fairly common, PTSD will only occur in a small proportion of people. This suggests that resilience is a common response to trauma. The neurobiology underlying this adaptive response is thought to involve reward related areas as well as reward functions. This dissertation proposes that reward and reward-related areas have a role in anxiety disorders such as PTSD. This hypothesis was explored using an animal model of PTSD as well as a human mode of psychosical stress. The hypothesis that the ventral tegmental area (VTA), crucial for reward processing, is part of the neural circuitry involved in the symptomatology of PTSD was explored. To assess the role of VTA in PTSD, cells in this area were reversibly inactivated during a single exposure to inescapable foot-shock in a rodent model. Animals that underwent inactivation of VTA neurons decreased avoidance and lowered long-term anxiety-like behaviors in comparison with control groups. To assess short- and long-term electrophysiological effects of trauma on VTA cells, in vivo extracellular recordings were conducted. Results showed that the firing frequency of VTA cells changed both in the short- and long-term, following shock procedures. A human model of psychosical stress was used to test the hypothesis that the ability to respond appropriately to positive stimuli is important for the preservation of positive emotions following stressful events. The results show a positive correlation between trait resilience and trait reward sensitivity. To investigate the link between resilience and reward sensitivity further, the empirical portion of this study used a Monetary Incentive Delay Task (MID) to measure reward sensitivity before and after exposure to a psychosocial stressor. Moreover, behavioral reward sensitivity (as measured by MID and self-report satisfaction after the reward task) also correlated positively with trait and behaviorally measured resilience. The results shown in this dissertation suggest that the neural circuits involved in reward processing and reward function may be involved in resilient responses to stress.

Gender microaggressions are normative messages that communicate harmful stereotypes or attitudes towards women. Research suggests that being the target of microaggresions may contribute to negative mental and physical health outcomes. The current study examined how gender microaggressions affect emotional and physiological reactivity as well as performance on a working memory task. Results indicated condition (i.e., control vs. sexual objectification microaggression vs. denial of sexism microaggression) did not have a significant affect on reactivity or performance. Issues of population bias and essentialism may have played an important role in study findings. Future directions are discussed.

The Moderating Role of RSA Baseline, Reactivity, and Recovery in the Link between Parental Socialization of Emotion Regulation and Children's Internalizing Symptoms

In this study I examined the moderating effect of three profiles of respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA at baseline, in response to a stressor, and in recovery from a stressor) on the relationship between parental emotion socialization during an emotion-related discussion and parental report of child internalizing symptoms 6 months later. Parents were observed during an emotion discussion task and coded for their use of emotion encouragement and general positive involvement. A total of 65 families with children between the ages of eight and ten years old completed this task while RSA scores were obtained from children during baseline, task, and recovery phases. Regression analyses were conducted to test for main effects of parental emotion socialization and RSA, as well as two-way emotion socialization x RSA interactions, in the development of internalizing symptoms 6 months following the initial interview. Interactions were further examined for the degree they statistically conformed to either a diathesis-stress or biological sensitivity to context framework (BSC). Hypotheses were partially supported: main effects were found for RSA baseline and recovery, whereas RSA reactivity moderated the association between parental emotion encouragement and child internalizing symptoms, such that parents of children exhibiting RSA withdrawal reported greater internalizing symptoms in the context of low emotion encouragement and lesser internalizing symptoms in the context of high emotion encouragement. This study highlights the importance of considering child psychophysiology, particularly reactivity to stress, in the study of the effects of parental emotion socialization on the development of psychopathology during childhood.

The influence of ethnicity and gender on the relationship between Posttraumatic Stress Disorder status and cardiovascular responding

Past research has found inconsistent effects of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) status on cardiovascular responding. Inconsistencies may be explained by demographic differences in study samples. In this study, the influence of gender and ethnicity on the relationship between PTSD status and cardiovascular responding was explored. Participants’ (N = 245) heart rate (HR), systolic blood pressure (SBP), and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) readings were taken throughout baseline and anger recall periods. For all gender by ethnicity groups, baseline HR was higher in participants with PTSD than without PTSD, except for Black men. Whites with PTSD had lower baseline SBP than Whites without PTSD; the opposite was true for Blacks. Men and Blacks with PTSD had larger HR increases during anger imagery than men and Blacks without PTSD, whereas women and Whites showed the opposite pattern. Results suggest demographic variables may account for inconsistent effects of PTSD on cardiovascular responding.
