Santa Fe Ski Basin Proposed Expansion Ethnographic Assessment

Evans, Michael, Stoffle, Richard W., Krause, Elizabeth 01 June 1993 (has links)
The purpose of this research study was to conduct an ethnographic assessment for an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) of a proposed expansion plan for the Santa Fe Ski Area located in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains north of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Along with expansion into forest areas outside the existing Special Use permit boundaries, the proposed plan includes new buildings, parking lots, lifts, ski runs, and snowmaking within the existing ski area boundary. The ethnographic assessment concentrates on those cultural resources known to be in the area, as identified by Pueblo participants in the research study. This project had three objectives: a) what impact would the project have on the traditional uses, cultural uses, values, and belief practices of Tesuque Pueblo and other Pueblos' uses of the area; b) how would the ski area expansion affect the traditional use area of the Tesuque Pueblo and other Pueblos; and c) what specific areas of traditional cultural use, including those of Hispanic origin, would be affected by the proposed alternatives.

American Indians and Fajada Butte: Ethnographic Overview and Assessment for Fajada Butte and Traditional (Ethnobotanical) Use Study for Chaco Culture National Historical Park, New Mexico

Stoffle, Richard W., Evans, Michael, Zedeño, M. Nieves, Stoffle, Brent W., Kesel, Cindy 28 February 1994 (has links)
This ethnographic overview documents the contemporary values of American Indians regarding Fajada Butte. The study defines which Indian tribes have traditional or historic cultural ties to Fajada Butte and Chaco Culture National Historical Park (NHP). The study was funded by the National Park Service on September 15, 1992, and was managed by the New Mexico State Historic Preservation Office. The ethnographic overview is focussed on two broad issues: (1) Fajada Butte and its significance to American Indian people and (2) the traditional use of plants and their cultural significance to American Indian people. An additional goal of this study is to contribute information about to the process of general tribal -park consultation including Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. This study documented that 11 tribes and pueblos have cultural relationships with Fajada Butte and Chaco Culture NHP. American Indians feel a contemporary identification with the Fajada Butte and Chaco Culture NHP. There are three main ways for expressing this identification (1) direct descent ties, (2) tribal ties, and (3) ethnic ties. No tribal or pueblo representatives expressed knowledge of living families who are direct descendants from the people of Chaco; however, many of them stated that Chaco people were their direct ancestors. All tribes and pueblo representatives who participated in the on -site visit claimed tribal or pueblo ties to the people of Chaco. The research also was concerned with the plant life of the area both on and around Fajada Butte. This study documented the American Indian traditional use placess around Fajada Butte and elsewhere in Chaco Canyon. All Indian representatives expressed the desire that the park continues to protect these plants from disturbance and emphasized the need to have a park-wide ethnobotanical study.

Assessing Agricultural and Hydrologic Potential of Ancestral Puebloan Community Centers using Open Source Data

Zarzycka, Sandra Elzbieta 05 1900 (has links)
The Pueblo III period marks a critical shift in settlement location of Ancestral Puebloan people within the Mesa Verde region. Community centers during the Pueblo I and Pueblo II periods were built on mesa tops, whereas canyon-rims and alcoves became the preferred settlement location during the Pueblo III period. Beginning in the Pueblo I period, community centers consisted of linear roomblock villages. By the late Pueblo II period great house community centers influenced by the Chaco culture system spanned the Mesa Verde region. The Pueblo III period hallmarks the transition to canyon-rim villages and cliff dwellings. The location of these Pueblo III centers is thought to be related to the need for a defensive position on the landscape, and access to water sources. This shift in settlement locations undoubtedly led to change in the access to resources, such as water, arable farmland, and wild food plants and game. This study aims to evaluate whether the change in community center location impacted the accessibility to arable farmland and water sources immediately available to Ancestral Puebloan people throughout time. Specifically, several variables related to farming potential and hydrologic potential, including soil type, soil moisture, elevation, cropland suitability, distance to water sources, drainage density, and hydrogeologic units were evaluated. Nine community centers within the McElmo drainage area in southwestern Colorado ranging in age from the Pueblo II to Pueblo III periods were included in this study.

Gestión del conocimiento en una entidad pública a través del uso de plataformas virtuales de enseñanza : caso Defensoría del Pueblo.

Segovia Rojas, Rita Azucena 28 November 2013 (has links)
Tesis

A Spatial and Temporal Analysis of San Juan Red Ware

Bischoff, Robert Jacob 01 August 2018 (has links)
San Juan Red Ware was widely distributed throughout the Four Corners region of the U.S. Southwest between about AD 750 and 1100. Prior research indicates this ware is a marker of identity and was likely associated with feasting and other communal activities. A study of the distribution of this ware indicates that it was traded widely, but with significant variation in relative quantity between sites. This variation is likely caused by unequal access to this ware due either to a lack of access to the necessary exchange networks or by a conscious decision to not participate in the exchange of this ware. San Juan Red Ware became more widely dispersed after the first century of production, which may be indicative of increased integration between social groups. Several methods were used in this analysis, including inverse distance weighting, hexagon binning, fall-off curves, distance diagrams using Typenspektren, and social network analysis. An evaluation of these methods indicates some are more effective than others for this analysis, although the use of several complementary methods is recommended to provide a more comprehensive analysis.

A Comparative Study of Mother's Education and Early Child Rearing Practices in A Southwestern Indian Pueblo

Remund, Sherry D. 01 May 1975 (has links)
The problem on which this study focused was the need to determine the manner and degree to which pluralistic values of the greater American Society are influencing family life and child rearing patterns of a Southwestern Indian Pueblo, The Southwestern Pueblo is not named for reasons of anonymity. The intent of the study was to determine the degree to which southwestern pueblo mothers have been affected by their education in a non-indian culture as related to child rearing practices in the pre-school years. The study tests the hypothesis that there is no significant difference in the early child rearing practices of mothers educated on the reservation and those mothers educated off the reservation in a non-Indian culture. Methodologically, a sample of 30 mothers were interviewed by the researcher: in the Fall of 1974 . Fifteen mothers were representative of the nonreservation educated mothers and 15 mothers were educated on the reservation. The instrument used in the interviews was adapted from Schroeder who did a similar study at Jemez Pueblo in 1960. Her study served as a comparative base for this research. Out of 76 items, only five showed a significant difference in the responses of the two groups of mothers at the. 05 level. Therefore the hypothesis was not rejected. Generally, the reservation educated mothers were more permissive in areas of feeding than non-reservation educated mothers. This same permissiveness for the reservation educated mothers held true in regard to toilet training practices and in the areas of discipline, the reservation educated mothers leaned toward the traditional maternal extended family pattern. More of the children in the reservation-educated group lived in their maternal grandmother's home. All mothers in both groups realized change was occurring, but most hoped their child would preserve some of the Indian culture and feel proud to be an Indian.
