The aim of this study is to analyze the multiple use of the Barra Bonita reservoir, which is located in the confluence of the Piracicaba river and the Tietê river, in the state of São Paulo, and belongs to the called Tietê-Paraná system. The reservoir operation will be optimized, through linear programming, aiming to increase the hydropower generation, by maximizing the water flow through turbines. In sequence, on the hydropower generation optimization results, computer simulation techniques will be used, in order to obtain performance rates as reliability, resilience and vulnerability, in addiction to other rates provided by the simulation model itself. These rates can assist to evaluate the frequency, the magnitude and the duration of possible conflicts that may occur. The navigation, the water storage in the reservoir, the hydropower generation and the occurrence of floods in Barra Bonita, a city located downstream the dam, will be analyzed.

Previous issue date: 2017-08-25 / The main objective of this dissertation was to analyse some educational purposes of school in
documents that define policies and guidelines of national education in connections to
doctrinal and strategic orientations of international organizations, especially the World Bank
and Unesco, in order to understand its impact on social quality of education. This study
consisted of bibliographic research based on documents produced by the World Bank and
Unesco, and official documents of Brazilian Ministry of Education. The analyses and
conclusions presented in this work were made by several authors, such as Dermeval Saviani,
Gaudêncio Frigotto, José Carlos Libâneo, Yves Lenoir, Olinda Evangelista, Eneida Shiroma,
Roberto Leher, António Nóvoa and José Gimeno Sacristan. In the course of the research,
connections between the guidelines of international organizations, neoliberalism and
globalization movement, and their consequences in the formulation of educational policies,
especially in emerging countries were found. Thus, the definition of educational purposes is
subordinated to the process of internationalization of educational policies in which education
is tied exclusively to the interests of the economy and the market. The sense of quality in
education is related, thereby, to the criteria of effectiveness of globalized market. From the
analysis of the documents and with the support of other researches on the subject on focus, it
was possible to verify that one of the role of public policies for education is to enable the
insertion of population socially vulnerable to the labor market. To this end, programs for the
poverty reduction are instituted, a result-based knowledge and skills curriculum that aims an
incorporation of the less favored classes in society. Thus, such educational purposes, once
incorporated into educational policies, school education planning, curricula, school
functioning, and teachers' work, project a utilitarian sense of quality, restricted to the
satisfaction of immediate, distant needs, far from the sense of social and cultural quality,
aiming human emancipation.

The perceptions of a group of first year undergraduate Malawian students of the essay writing processKalikokha, Chimwemwe January 2008 (has links)
The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of the essay writing process of first year undergraduates at Chancellor College (University of Malawi) and to a lesser extent those of the lecturers responsible for teaching academic skills. A mixed methods design, combining qualitative and quantitative techniques, was employed in order to obtain richer data for deeper understanding of the students’ writing process. Two hundred students from the humanities and social science faculties responded to a self-completion questionnaire towards the end of semester one. Based on the students’ responses, an open-ended questionnaire was administered to four full time English for Academic Purposes (EAP) instructors. Findings from this study indicate that most students find it very challenging to obtain sufficient and relevant source text information, paraphrase or summarise information, and use an appropriate academic writing style. As solutions to these challenges, the students suggested the need for timely essay writing instruction, availability of resources for essay writing, increased amount of time spent on essay writing instruction, and discipline specific instruction in essay writing. EAP instructors identified lack of teaching and learning materials, large EAP classes, and students’ negative attitude towards the EAP course, as some of the challenges they encounter when teaching the course. The EAP instructors proposed an increase in the number of staff members, making students aware of the significance of the EAP course at an early stage, and the availability of up to date resources, as some of the ways in which the teaching of the course can be improved. Overall, the findings seem to suggest that difficulties that students encounter during the writing process and teaching challenges that EAP instructors face, have great impact on students’ perception of academic writing as well as their approach to writing tasks. The findings also suggest a lack of dialogue between the students and their lecturers. This is evident in students’ unawareness of the nature of the writing demands of their lecturers and disciplines; students’ desire to have timely essay writing instruction; and the lecturers’ concerns about students’ negative attitude towards the EAP course.

Towards a communicative approach to teaching speaking skills to students of commerce in VietnamNguyen, Duc Hoat, n/a January 1985 (has links)
As a result of the development in foreign trade in
Vietnam, there is a growing need for trained business
executives and business people. A good command of spoken
English is one of the most important qualifications of a
foreign trade executive who needs English as a means of
communicating with English speaking people in various
business activities. At present, the responsibility for
training students of commerce mainly rests with Hanoi Foreign Trade College. English language teaching in
general, and the teaching of speaking skills in particular
still leave much,to be desired. The students' oral
proficiency is far from satisfactory.
The purpose of this report is to explore the two
main problematic areas in teaching speaking skills to
students of commerce in Vietnam: syllabus design and
teaching methods.
The report consists of four chapters. Chapter one
looks at some major theoretical problems and practical
issues in English for Specific Purposes teaching. Chapter
two provides an analysis of the teaching and learning
situations at Hanoi Foreign Trade College and problems
in teaching oral skills. Chapter three is mainly concerned
with designing a communicative syllabus for the teaching
of speaking skills to students of commerce. Chapter four
deals with the theoretical assumptions and processes
involved in oral communication and discusses some classroom
methods and techniques in the light of the current
communicative approach.
This report should be regarded as an exploratory
attempt in adopting the communicative approach to teaching
oral skills to students of commerce in Vietnam.

Proposed EAP and ESP syllabuses for Vietnamese students going to study overseasNgoc Hung, Nguyen, n/a January 1986 (has links)
The increasing number of economic and cultural aid programmes for
Vietnam to reconstruct its war-torn economy in recent years from the
United Nations Development Programme and other international and
governmental organizations has created a great demand for English language teaching and learning in Vietnam. The language problems
that face Vietnamese scientists and technicians working in these aid
programmes have been a major concern of many educational
institutions in Vietnam and a reason for the author of this Study
Report to take up this study.
Chapter one of this study covers major stages of development of the
teaching of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) and various factors
that influence the teaching of ESP.
Chapter two discusses some current issues in the teaching of ESP in
Vietnam with special reference to course organization, syllabus and
material design at the Hanoi Foreign Language College. It also
points out some misunderstanding and misconception in the teaching
of English to Vietnamese scientists and technicians.
Chapter three looks at major language problems that Vietnamese
students meet when they go to study at different colleges or
universities in English speaking countries. A close investigation
will be carried out over a number of Vietnamese veterinary doctors
studying at the university of Queensland in Australia.
Chapter four is concerned with the selection of suitable syllabus
models for ESP/EAP courses at HFLC and also attempts to work out
appropriate syllabuses for EAP courses for Vietnamese students going
to study overseas.
The final chapter suggests some further considerations for
organizing ESP/EAP courses at HFLC especially for material
production, ESP teacher training and ESP testing.
It is hoped that this Study Report will give language teachers in
the ESP Department at the Hanoi Foreign Languages College a clearer
picture of what ESP is all about and provide some guidelines for
successful organization of teaching ESP and EAP to Vietnamese
students.

A Needs Assessment Study On English Language Needs Of The Tour Guidance Students Of Faculty Of Applied Sciences At Baskent University:a Case StudyEkici, Nese 01 September 2003 (has links) (PDF)
The purpose of this study was to examine the English language needs of Tour Guidance students of Faculty of Applied Sciences at BaSkent University by referring to the perceptions of students, English instructors and curriculum coordinators and to see whether there was a relationship between students& / #8217 / attitude towards English language and their self ratings of learning and target needs.
The data collection instruments used for the study were the attitude scale and student needs assessment questionnaire administered to forty-five students, ESP Identification Form administered to two curriculum coordinators and English Instructor Questionnaire administered to both of the curriculum coordinators and the three English instructors.
The descriptive analysis of the data revealed that there were both similarities and differences among the perceptions of students, English instructors and curriculum coordinators with respect to the learning needs and target needs of students. Paired-Samples T Test results indicated need for most of the skills referring to learning and target needs. The relationship between students& / #8217 / attitude towards English language and their self ratings of learning and target needs came up to be of different values for the seven subdimensions of attitude.
On the basis of the results of the study, it is suggested that speaking, listening and specialist vocabulary be emphasised more in order to fulfill the ESP needs of Tour Guidance students. Applying skill based syllabus as primary and situational and content approaches to syllabus design as subordinate is suggested to be effective as well. Using instructional materials appealing to the subdimensions of attitude is another suggestion presented.

Assessment Of Water Supply Impacts For A Mine Site In Western TurkeyAgartan, Elif 01 June 2010 (has links) (PDF)
A certain amount of water is required for a mine site located in Turgutlu in Western
Turkey to be used in mining processes. The purpose of this study is to assess the
impacts associated with meeting water supply requirements for the mine. Scope of
the study involves determination of the alternative water resources, the assessment of
impacts associated with each resource and the selection of the most feasible
alternative in the aspect of environmental and technical effects.
Three alternatives suggested to supply mine process water are surface water,
groundwater and reuse of waste water of Turgutlu town after treatment. A low flow
analysis of Gediz River was conducted for the evaluation of the surface water. For
the groundwater alternative, Turgutlu-Salihli aquifer model was established using
MODFLOW 2009.1 software and the impacts on groundwater resources were
evaluated. The evaluation of the last alternative, reuse of waste water of Turgutlu
after treatment, was based upon the amount of waste water generated and treatment
needed.
Results of the alternatives show that each alternative is applicable to supply the
required water to the mine site. However, the storage of the Gediz River water in a
v
small dam in wet seasons to be used later in dry seasons and the reuse of waste water
of Turgutlu after treatment are the alternatives with least impacts on existing water
users and related ecosystems.
