Development of a Biotope Quality Index

Bredenhand, Emile 04 1900 (has links)
Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: As the world’s human population increases, more pressure is placed on the management of natural resources. In response, we need an efficient means of monitoring, not only the quantity of these resources but also their quality. No comprehensive standard metric has been developed to assess environmental quality of a biotope, or to define the nature and extent of environmental degradation at this spatial scale. Currently in conservation management, various landscapes are being evaluated for spatial heterogeneity, by making use of species surrogates such as species richness, relative abundance, diversity indices and phylogenetic indices, as well as environmental surrogates. These values are then used towards conservation, where those systems with high intrinsic heterogeneity are usually considered more important than those with low heterogeneity at least when given the choice between the two. Yet, the actual quality of the biotopes within the landscapes is rarely taken into consideration. This study therefore develops and tests a Biotope Quality Index (BQI) to study this point in depth. The BQI makes use of arthropod assemblages as bioindicators of the level of disturbance within a biotope. Firstly, I summarize the literature on the concept of environmental health, and define it as “An ecosystem is healthy, if it can sustain an optimal number of species with optimal population sizes and their ecological processes, thus providing and optimal heterogeneous sustainable system with sufficient resources, and indicated adequate resistance when under perturbational stress, but still allowing natural succession to take place” Against this background, I then review the use of certain Arthropoda as bioindicators, as arthropods are small, mobile, environmentally sensitive, easily sampled, and readily available. These features together make arthropods good subjects for testing the BQI. I then compare the BQI with diversity indices currently used as surrogates of biotope quality. The outcome was that the BQI stood out as a significantly better indicator than the currently available indices for assessing environmental quality of a biotope. Furthermore, during the selection process, I also tested the use of guilds for BQI evaluation, and found that the scavenger (represented by Formicidae) and decomposer (represented by Collembola) guilds were the most significant. The effect of seasonality was also tested. I found the best results with the BQI were when data are pooled from all seasons of the year. A case study, making use of the BQI evaluation, was conducted at a site in the Cape Floristic Region, South Africa (Jonkershoek Valley). BQI results suggested that the agricultural management and tourism within the locality might have an effect on biotope quality. This study has shown that use of the BQI is a useful and practical management tool for evaluating environmental quality of a biotope towards conservation management.

No. of bitstreams: 1 Wald¿sia Rodrigues de Lima - pdf.pdf: 2096816 bytes, checksum: 9efc8c848efcaca11b165c54593239f0 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-11-21 / The objects of study of this work have been the municipal school councils (CEs) of the municipality of Cubatão. The problem under investigation can be summarized in the following question: What is the role that large evaluation, represented by the IDEB, plays in the CEs discussions. The aim of the study is to investigate the CEs actions regarding to the formal elementary education quality, in this case, represented by a external evaluation. The research introduces two strong justifications for that. First: the need for further analysis on the effects, the consequences of external evaluation on the school taking into account the publicity given to the its results, the repercussion for the municipal management and placing of the school under monitoring in consequence of the results. Second: the need of examining how the CE works, what can be an indicator of its consolidation as an instrument for the democratic management. The field work is concentrated in there municipal schools CEs. The study presents a qualitative approach, analyzing the guiding principle of the CEs, the IDEB and the content of CEs meeting minutes. In addition, we analyzed questionnaires applied on CEs and to 47 school principals in the same municipality. Several authors that discuss the attainments of collegiate and the public management support this work: Barroso (1996), Bordignon (2004), Dourado (2004), Gadotti (2004), Martins (2005), Scheinvar & Algebaile (2005), Silva (2006), Freire (2007), Libâneo (2008), Lima (2008) and Saviani (2009). Also, we will take into account other authors that analyze the educational policy evaluation, like:Vianna (2000), Afonso (2009) e Freitas (2009). The data analyzed show that the CEs under investigation behave as democratic management instrument. They do not explicity discuss fundamental issues to guarantee the schooling education quality: the use of financial resources from federal and municipal programs with pegagogic aims and focused on the student; disciplinary issues like the collective elaboration of conduct codes; demand for technical administrative personnel and teachers to address the lack of personnel, monitoring and decision on educational projects, therefore, they show envelopment in issues relevant to the schooling scope. A investigação apresenta duas grandes justificativas.

Evaluating management standards : empirical research into the Scottish Quality Management System

Marshall, George H. January 2006 (has links)
Managers today are faced with a bewildering choice of Management Standards that are being promoted to improve personal and organisational performance by a wide range of Standards-setting bodies. Standards-based management is a well-researched field, but all the research concentrates on individual Standards such as ISO 9000 and 14000 without identifying the influences of other Management Standards. This research seeks to extend the debate about Standards-based management and to encourage other researchers to consider it as both an entity and a phenomenon and to note its divergence from other management theories. A taxonomy of Management Standards is presented to enable the principal Standards to be categorised and a definition of a Management Standard is proposed to enable the distillation of the considerable body of literature into more manageable proportions. A chronology of Management Standards development is tabled and compared with the evolution of Quality Management and Total Quality Management (TQM) and the possible future development of Management Standards is examined. The literature research confirmed that Standards-based management approaches had increased very significantly, despite a lack of empirical research to show that this method of management yielded uniform improvements. It identified a trend for integrating Management Standards and creating a “super” Management Standard that would incorporate all the functions of management within an organisation. The Scottish Quality Management System (SQMS) is an integrated Management Standard that incorporates many of the key functions of management within an audited Management Standards framework that its architects claim is based on the principles of TQM. While originally developed for the Scottish training provider network in 1993, it has spread internationally and is currently in use by circa 600 organisations in several countries. It is the only example of a Management Standard of this kind, and despite its longevity, extensive coverage and significant public investment, it has not attracted any previous research interest. The SQMS project was ambitious, seeking to impose a major new Standard on a diverse and predominately unsophisticated population of organisations within a tight time frame. The field research surveyed the entire SQMS registered organisation population using a questionnaire that was based upon the principles of ISO 9004: 1994 and some preliminary research. The questionnaire was designed to examine attitudes and motivation, as well as gauging the effectiveness of the SQMS Standard as determined by an analysis of the improvements that could be directly associated with its implementation. The survey achieved over 70% response rate and the resulting data set was comprehensive and the analysis robust. An additional element of the research compared the results of the questionnaire response analysis with the perceptions of the SQMS Auditors who had audited a majority of the respondent organisations. The field research showed that the SQMS population was very experienced and had been working with SQMS for well over three years. This is a period that the literature research indicated was the minimum time required for the benefits of quality improvement initiatives to become measurable. In the absence of any clear published objectives for the implementation of SQMS, a number of likely objectives were postulated and these objectives were measured against the results of the research. The results of the research suggest an attitude of compliance, rather than improvement as the underlying mind-set of the SQMS organisations and an absence of quality improvement planning or measurement of key performance indicators. This attitude was no different among organisations that had also adopted ISO 9000 and IiP. SQMS accreditation had not shown to provide any marketing or promotional benefit in the same way as ISO 9000 and it had not led to increased market share or profitability. Few of the possible benefits of applying a Standard of this nature had been realised by the majority of organisations and there was little evidence of tangible organisational improvement. The Standard could not be deemed to have met its proposed objectives and a comparison with an accepted model of TQM did not find sufficient compatibility to designate SQMS as a tool for TQM implementation. The interviews with SQMS Auditors identified major discrepancies between their perceptions and the views of the organisations that they audited. The admission by over half of the respondent organisations that they produced evidence purely to satisfy audits raised questions about the effectiveness of the Standard and its audits and the competence of auditors to audit “super” Standards. The novelty of the research is examined and suggestions for future research proposed.

Kesnerová, Lucie January 2013 (has links)
This thesis deals with the monitoring of water quality and aquatic sediments analysis in the protected area Křivoklátsko. Monitoring was carried out at 16 locations and there were determined 14 physico-chemical parameters . Sediment samples were collected once for the whole period at 14 locations in which was determine the content of metals. In each sediment sample there was analyzed content of selected metals. The results of analysis, water and sediment samples were evaluated according to the Directives and regulations giving limits for water and sediment. Due to the Czech Republic is a member state of the European Union, the state was also evaluated according to Water Framework Directive. Theoretical part of thesis decribes characteristics of metals, their forms in water and soils. This section also contain some informations about water framework directive 2000/60/EC as a great step in a water policy. Moreover there is a short history about development water quality in the Czech Republic. Experimental section contains standards for determining water quality, but indicating in particular the processing of sediment samples from sampling to determine concentrations. The following chapter deals with the evaluation of the results given by legislation - for water to the CSN 75 7221 and Regulation...

Beurteilung der Schulpraktischen Studien I: Projektbericht ; Ergebnisse von Fragebogenstudien mit Lehramtsstudierenden und Dozierenden an der Universität Leipzig

Grüneberg, Tillmann, Knopf, Antje, Herfter, Christian January 2014 (has links)

Zschätzsch, Daniel 11 September 2014 (has links)
The German Elite Sport Schools (ESS) have been established to support the “dual career“ of junior athletes by offering school education and optimal training conditions. However, present evaluations of ESS argue that the aimed dual efficacy is not achieved. This efficacy is mainly determined by analysing output-based criteria out of a shareholder-perspective, such as completed graduations or medals won. Thus, the structures and processes, on which a high output is based, are not taken into account nor the individual demands of junior athletes regarding the dual promotional system. The present work is reacting on this situation by performing three empirical studies, which focus on the individual satisfaction of junior athletes in a holistic approach. At first, a Delphi-analysis was performed (N = 40) to identify 20 quality criteria of dual support at the ESS. These criteria were used to develop and validate a standardized questionnaire (AZ-EdS; N = 445) assessing the individual demands of junior athletes regarding the ESS. The questionnaire was used as a base to determine the athlete satisfaction with the ESS and, furthermore, to reveal the weak spots of that support system out of an athlete point of view (N = 445). The results show, that the athletes judge the support system as overall positive. An elevated importance is ascribed to the structures and processes that are a precondition for the results. However, the results also show a high subjectivity of athlete ratings. Thus, the athlete opinions can be used to reveal weak spots concerning the ESS, but further analyses using objective facts are inevitable.

Representing Data Quality in Sensor Data Streaming Environments

Lehner, Wolfgang, Klein, Anja 20 May 2022 (has links)
Sensors in smart-item environments capture data about product conditions and usage to support business decisions as well as production automation processes. A challenging issue in this application area is the restricted quality of sensor data due to limited sensor precision and sensor failures. Moreover, data stream processing to meet resource constraints in streaming environments introduces additional noise and decreases the data quality. In order to avoid wrong business decisions due to dirty data, quality characteristics have to be captured, processed, and provided to the respective business task. However, the issue of how to efficiently provide applications with information about data quality is still an open research problem. In this article, we address this problem by presenting a flexible model for the propagation and processing of data quality. The comprehensive analysis of common data stream processing operators and their impact on data quality allows a fruitful data evaluation and diminishes incorrect business decisions. Further, we propose the data quality model control to adapt the data quality granularity to the data stream interestingness.
