Invisible Visible Minorities: The Experiences of Racial Minority Teacher Candidates on Practicum and in Teacher Education Programs

Lau, ANGEL 04 September 2008 (has links)
The experiences of racial minority teacher candidates are often unheard in teacher education programs considering that the student population is increasingly diversifying and the teaching population does not reflect this dynamic. In a country that is internationally known for its multicultural practices, it is important to examine the experiences of racial minority teacher candidates in order to gain a better understanding of the ways in which issues of race and power persist in our education system. This qualitative study documents the experiences of a small group of racial minority teacher candidates who recently completed post baccalaureate teacher education programs at universities in Ontario, Canada. With a particular focus on their practicum placements, the five participants were interviewed in order to bring to light their experiences of working and living in an education system that sustains, what has been called by critics, “a culture of whiteness.” Over the course of the interviews, the five racial minority teacher candidates reveal that the often covert and overt forms of racism are systemic to the education system. It became obvious that in many cases, the participants did not consciously recognize the racism they encountered while working, living, and learning within the education system. Considering a culture of whiteness that is endemic in schools, power relations were further jeopardized and imbalanced by their race. Despite this, the participants also exhibited forms of resistance to the Eurocentric culture that is so deeply entrenched in the education system. Through an investigation of these themes, this thesis offers implications for future racial minority teacher candidates and anti-racist educators. / Thesis (Master, Education) -- Queen's University, 2008-08-29 13:21:55.632

Politiques identitaires LGBTQ et capitalisme : histoires croisées du marché gay et de l'activisme aux Etats-Unis / LGBTQ identity politics and capitalism : the love-hate relationship between gay market and activism

Servel, Antoine 17 June 2016 (has links)
The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender community has rapidely become part of american Society. It has won many battles-among them the right to get married-which have changed the way sexual minorities are now seen. Gay culture is everywhere in magazines, in Hollywood, on TV, and we can wonder what were the reasons for such an evolution. We consider that the way the community has understood capitalism enabled those changes. From the creation of a market and its recognition by the mainstream, LGBT people are now consumer activists. We analyse in this PhD dissertation the benefits and setbacks of that activism with regards to the different waves of LGBTQ movements in the twentieh century

An Exploratory Study on how Artificial Intelligence could help Resolve the Issue of Whitewashing Hollywood Films

Luukka, Lotta Matleena January 2019 (has links)
Whitewashing and colourism is prevalent in the Hollywood film industry due to decades of institutional racism, unconscious and implicit bias of professionals in the industry combined with the misconceptions of the success factors in film. This study will explore the capabilities of artificial intelligence helping the industry professionals of Hollywood film fight against whitewashing. The research of AI and AI-human interactions are a relatively young phenomenon, let alone combining artificial intelligence with the creative process of creating a cast. This means that the whole research is a relatively new territory and will be examined from an exploratory point of view. The findings of this paper suggest that AI certainly has the capabilities to help Hollywood make more diverse casts with more equal representation of people of colour, but technology needs to face and overcome the biases of its own first.
