The task of the thesis is to propose an adjustment to the railway station Březová nad Svitavou with regard to the introduction of the remote control of security device and explore the possibility of building a new railway stop that would be located closer to downtown. The aim is mutual comparison of elaborated variants. Work includes design of new platforms meet the conditions for safe access for people with limited mobility, next adjustment are adjustment of the geometric parameters of the track superstructure and substructure, including system of drainage station.

Re-connecting the divide : an integrated trade and transport node for the Hammanskraal commercial precinct

This dissertation addresses the reestablishment of the Hammanskraal train station, by providing an integrated transport node that includes a variety of community functions. The aim is to re-introduce the Stationarea as a signifi cant trade and transport node in the Hammanskraal community. The main routes linking to the railway station and the surrounding urban fabric are re-evaluated and altered to accommodate not only the railway programme, but also to better suit the growing needs of the community. Theoretically the project explores the infl uence architecture and spatial perceptions have on the social behaviour and the interactions between diff erent users in these spaces. These relationships are explored to create architecture that not only responds to existing conditions but also becomes a landmark in the area and a reference for future developments in the area. The theoretical investigation can be applied in a design such as the new Hammanskraal station as the characteristics and scope of this node need to integrate diff erent users and functions. Integrating these aspects into the design leads to new forms of interaction and spatial appropriation. The closure of the public component of the railway station resulted in the degradation and neglect of a site that is located within one of the busiest social and commercial nodes of the Hammanskraal Township. The suspended long distance commuter service in favour of the taxi and bus service has resulted in the lack of transport options to thousands of daily commuters between the township and the Pretoria CBD. The new Hammanskraal Railway interchange aims to reconnect the local residents, with a more economic means of travel, to the Pretoria CBD as most of them commute there for work opportunities. Integration and interaction between rail and road transport and numerous informal traders, within a vibrant urban space, are the main focus areas of the design. The design’s intent is to provide a reconnected township, while addressing the immediate needs of the site and the community. Characterisation of airborne particles from rail traffic

Since the investigation of wear particles in rail transport started in late-1910s, the high mass concentration of these particles has raised worries among researchers concerned with air quality. However, effective action has yet to be taken because of lack of relevant knowledge. This thesis provides applicable information for the airborne wear particles in rail transport. Some aspects of their characteristics such as diameter size, mass concentration, number concentration, and morphology of particles were investigated in field tests and laboratory tests.The effects on particle characterisations from different operational conditions in the field tests, and applying different braking materials, conducting tests in different applied loads or sliding velocities in the laboratory tests were studied. The main advantage of conducting laboratory tests was to focus on studying particles from one source. The possibility of repetition, using high sensitive instruments and conducting tests at low costs are the other advantages of laboratory studies. Paper A describes how a pin-on-disc machine was used to reproduce similar real operational conditions during mechanical braking in a train. The results were validated by comparing the field tests results with the laboratory studies. The particles morphology and size distribution were also studied.Paper B presents a summary of field tests results. The effects of curve negotiating and applying braking in different real conditions were investigated with an on-board measurement.The element composition of the particles and their potential sources were also investigated outside of the particles morphologies.Paper C presents comprehensive results from laboratory studies on airborne particles from different braking materials. The differences in the particle characteristics in similar test conditions were attributable to different material compositions and dominant wear mechanisms. A new index was introduced in this paper and is suggested to be used as a qualitative factor with regard to the airborne wear particle emission rate.Paper D is a review of the recent studies of exhaust emission and non-exhaust emission from rail vehicles. Interpretation of Railway Track Alignment Measurements in a Geodynamic Perspective

The development in society means that infrastructure like ballasted railway systems are facing challenges due to request for increased number of high-speed trains and heavier freight trains. This implies that ballasted railways get an increased impact from larger dynamic loads. The question is how the ballasted railways are today affected by dynamic loading and how will an increase in train speed and weight change the soil behaviour within the railway embankment.  A method of investigating dynamic soil behaviour is via geophysical measurements. Accelerometers are commonly used for vibration measurements and by installing them on trains are measurements possible to perform for complete railway sections. The knowledge of expected natural frequencies for various track components and soil layers are essential when considering frequency based analysis of vibration measurements. Thus, a frequency based analysis of accelerometer measurements from track recording coaches enables a possible method for analysing the impact of dynamic loads on underlying soil materials with means of a knowledge of expected natural frequencies for various track components and soil layers. Importance to study frequency content of ground motions became more relevant after the Mexico City earthquake 1985 i.e. studies on this specific earthquake revealed amplification of ground motions due to a long duration of shaking and resonance of soil deposits and furthermore causing damage to buildings whose natural period was the same as the period of ground motion. Thus, if we consider a railway with long train sets running along the railway line. Long durations of shaking of the ground can occur as well as a possible resonance of various soil layers leading to changes in material properties. An interesting finding regarding vibration measurements conducted on a track recording coach show that after Fast Fourier Transformation of the measured vibration data, a frequency spectrum analysis indicate possibilities to detect resonance of the ballast layer in the railway embankment. Therefore, this thesis focus on frequency based analysis of the ballast layer were indications of changes in shear modulus of ballast is seen with means of frequency spectrum and theoretical knowledge of the change in shear modulus in ballast material under cyclic loading and increased shear strain. The thesis consists of two main parts, first is the construction of the so-called frequency-based analysis method of track alignment measurements in a geodynamic perspective and the second part is application of the frequency-based method on a case study. Thus, the scientific contribution of this thesis is to increase knowledge of track alignment measurements in the geotechnical field and to provide a frequency based analysis method of track alignment measurements in a geodynamic perspective for evaluation of soil properties. For the actual case study two different railway sections in Sweden is chosen to enable a comparison, especially when these sections differ with respect to one having only a ballast layer and subgrade and one having ballast, sub ballast and subgrade. Thus, the section with only ballast and subgrade enable a clearer analysis since these layers have large difference in natural frequency. First section is located at Tolikberget in the north part of Sweden and second one between Stenkumla and Dunsjö in south of Sweden. From the analysis of the selected sections it is possible to see indications from the frequency spectrum that the vibration measurements capture the natural frequencies of ballast material associated to the maximum shear modulus and to varying degrees of reduced shear modulus due to increased shear strain. Thus, it can be concluded that vibration measurements conducted on track recording coaches have potential to be used for studies of changes in ballast materials dynamic properties.

The Capital Park Steam and Railway History Museum: Implementing a Holistic Methodology for Contextual Museum Architectural Design - The Rovos Rail Estate

This dissertation focuses on the development of the site in and around Rovos Rail. Rovos Rail is a unique train travel company cut off from the public view. The project context is located in Capital Park adjacent to Transnet Avenue. The primary purpose of the site was to accommodate railway-related workshop facilities that provisioned and maintained the trains and carriages on their way to the industries of Johannesburg. Rovos Rail has done much in terms of the conservation of railway history in Pretoria. This ambition should be celebrated and built upon. It is necessary to promote the conservation of the rich railway history of South Africa and understand the impact thereof on the contemporary landscape. In order to understand the significance of contextualism, research based on philosophical, theoretical and practical lenses will be conducted. The argument relies on understanding the context through these different lenses. The historical significance of the site is celebrated. The dissertation places it within the historical continuum of both the larger context of Pretoria and the smaller context of the surrounding community. Through the design of a Steam Locomotive Museum next to Rovos Rail, a holistic approach, based on contextualism theories and South African case studies is illustrated. The project proposal establishes a physical connection with the historically significant structures of the site and emphasises the historical layers. Inspiration is drawn from the existing railway lines, the existing platform, ecological features and buildings. The chosen function, that of the museum, intends to act as the arbitrator for the diversity of narratives of an ever-evolving landscape, be it manmade or natural. The museum represents a prototype for the methodology proposed. Optimization model for selection of switches at railway stations

The goal of this project is to implement and verify an optimization model for finding a min-cost selection of switches and train paths at railway stations. The selected train paths must satisfy traffic requirements that commonly apply to regular railway traffic. The requirements include different combinations of simultaneous and overtaking train movements. The model does not rely on timetables but does instead utilize different path sets that are produced via algorithms based on a network representation of the station layout. The model has been verified on a small test station and also on the real station layout at Katrineholm. These tests show that the model can solve the problem for mid size stations with through traffic. In addition, we have performed a literature study regarding maintenance problems for switches and crossings. We have also looked at articles regarding the scheduling and routing of trains through railway stations. Finally we present some possible ways to further improve the model for more realistic experiments.

Design and development of a modular test system for testing of railway coupler components and subsystems

Dellner couplers AB is a developer and producer of railway coupling systems. This project is a master thesis that focuses on improving the quality, quantity and efficiency of their test department. This project details the design and development of a multi functional test rig that would serve as a basis for expansion decisions of the test department at Dellner. The resulting design was developed using the product development process by Ulrich and Eppinger with different phases. The phases being project planning, concept development, system-level design, detail design, testing and refinement and production ramp-up. However, some phases as described by the method would be altered or skipped for this project because of the limitations of the project and the nature of the product. The resulting design is able to perform four different tests that Dellner utilises today. This shows the potential of replacing four large test rigs with one of the new design. The design also has many different configuration options that enables an expansion of different types of tests. Simulations and calculations were made in order to verify the strength and functionality of the design.
