Conceptualizing the Relationships Between Grandmothers and the Grandchildren They Are Raising: A Grounded Theory Approach

Using a grounded theory approach (Strauss & Corbin, 1990), this study produced a conceptual framework for exploring the relationships between grandmothers and the grandchildren they are raising. Twenty-one grandmothers and grandchildren were engaged in in-depth interviews. grandmothers had legal custody of the participating grandchildren for at least the last six months. Grandchildren were between the ages of 7 and 14. Data were analyzed using open coding, axial coding, and selected coding. Four of the seven grandmothers were found to have a similar pattern due in large part to their daughters having a long history of drug addiction. These four grandmothers are the focus of the model. The remaining three grandmothers have dissimilar situations, but support the model as well. The study proposed a three-phase model of the relationships. These phases included: rescuer/protector, caregiver/provider, and mother/advocate. The model described movement from each phase through contextual conditions. The mother/advocate phase became the most developed phase of the model. Eight strategies used by the grandmothers to manage the mother/advocate phase are proposed. In addition, seven intervening conditions were identified that either constrain or enhance the strategies.

Online marketing and fundraising strategies for non-profit organisations in the Cape Town health sector

Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree Master of Technology: Design in the Faculty of Informatics and Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2013 / As healthcare is such a widespread issue in South Africa, this research focuses on non-profit organisations in the health sector. Non-profit organisations take on much of the work that the government cannot deliver with respect to the overall wellbeing of patients at hospitals, in specialised care, in basic healthcare, and most significantly, in areas where private healthcare is unaffordable. This study investigates online marketing, fundraising activities and strategies of non-profit organisations in Cape Town’s health sector. It illustrates the growing popularity of these channels, and argues that many non-profit organisations are not using online marketing tools effectively to raise the funds and support they need. Two longstanding non-profit organisations based at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, are the subject of the study, as this hospital is a prime example of how a government-run institution relies on the support of effective non-profit organisations. The conceptual framework required extensive reviews of the existing literature on the South African non-profit sector, the health sector and the role of non-profit organisations in these sectors. Furthermore, it reviewed successful marketing practices for non-profit organisations, including appropriate online marketing and fundraising strategies. A qualitative and quantitative research approach was employed, using semi-structured interviews and an online survey of twenty-seven health sector non-profit organisations. Key people in the non-profit health sector, the non-profit communication design sector and the corporate online marketing sector were interviewed. The online survey was conducted to gain a clear insight into the current online marketing practices and activities of Cape Town based health sector non-profit organisations. Grounded theory was used as an analytical tool in this research where themes emerge and theory is constructed based on insights and knowledge gained during the research. The results reveal that many non-profit organisations in the Cape Town health sector do not seem aware of the benefits of implementing an online marketing and fundraising strategy. This study concludes that online marketing and fundraising is vital for a non-profit organisation’s success. It is recommended that all members of non-profit organisations learn as much as they can about the importance of online marketing, as well as the importance of having a solid strategy. A unique framework for branding, strategy, online marketing and fundraising is proposed as a solution to the research problem, and further recommendations include the design of a textbook or eBook and an online platform connecting non-profit organisations in the health sector in South Africa.

FACTORS ACCOUNTING FOR VARIATIONS IN LEVELS OF PRIVATE GIVING TO HIGHER EDUCATION IN THE UNITED STATES.

The purpose of this study was to identify factors accounting for variations in levels of private giving to United States higher education. A second objective was to quantify the effect of each variable on voluntary contributions. Two separate analyses were performed. A cross-sectional study was designed to determine why amounts given vary among institutions for the year 1977-78. Four models were created: an overall contributions and per alumnus contributions model, an economic resource model and an eclectic model. All were analyzed using ordinary least squares regression. The dependent variable used was private giving and the independent variables examined were related to the institution itself or the state environment. In the analysis Liberal Arts I institutions were separated from Research Universities I and tests were performed that divided the sample into public/private institutions, wealthy/poor regions, and sunbelt/snowbelt regions. Second, a time-series analysis of total giving to higher education institutions was performed encompassing the years 1932 to 1974. Again, ordinary least squares regression was used. The dependent variable was total giving (TG) to higher education and the primary independent variables were largely economic factors. In the time-series analysis, three models were probed: gross receipts, net receipts, and a national income model. The cross-sectional analysis found that RUI and LAI institutions share one major variable that is strongly associated with contributions to them: quality. Other factors were found to vary among regions and between nonalumni and alumni giving. It was found also that private giving is best explained through alumni. The time-series analyses had very high explanatory power. Division of the gross receipts model revealed a decided difference between individual and business giving with business responding to classical economic fashion and individuals contributing in apparent disregard of economic motives. It would appear that different characteristics should be stressed when dealing with the different donors to institutions of higher education. Alumni and nonalumni should be solicited in disparate manners and businesses and individuals should be pursued for gifts at different times with different strategies, according to economic indicators and the demonstrated needs of the college.

This work aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the raising the claim in the insolvency proceedings. There is an explanation provided for each type of claims together with practical examples targeting the most problematic aspects of application of Act No. 182/2006 Coll., on bankruptcy and means of resolution thereof (hereinafter "The Insolvency Act").The work is not limited only to a process of raising the claim in insolvency proceedings but it systematical describes further existence of raised claim in the insolvency proceedings. There are also two more chapters dealing with the review of claims and their satisfaction. The work deals with the effective legislation, meaning the insolvency act. There is pointed toward the specific legislation in specific cases when adequate. This legislation is contained in the Act No. 328/1991 Coll., on bankruptcy and settlement (hereinafter "The Bankruptcy and Settlement Act"). I also took into account the significance of the novelization of the insolvency act number 294/2013 Sb. (so called revision novelization) and I point out the cases of modifications based on this novelization.. I also refer to the previous legislation contained in the bankruptcy act. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze this issue from the view of present legislation and judicial decisions and to point out some interpretation problems. Recent amendments of legal regulation as well as proposed bills were taken into account too. This thesis is divided into nine chapters. Chapter One introduces an initial part of insolvency proceedings, which starts with the commencement of insolvency proceedings and ends with the decision on the bankruptcy. It is concerned with an insolvency petition and analyzes its requirements and effects. This is followed by description of a court procedure regarding the alternatives of decisions on the insolvency petition. The consequences of unfounded insolvency petition and subsequent liability of petitioner were not left without attention as well. Chapter Two is focused on the creditor as a participant in the insolvency proceedings. Creditors are divided into five groups by the character of their claims. The Impact of Raising Attitude Toward Video Technology on Pet Business Sectors¡¦ Use Intention:A Technology Acceptance Model (TAM)-Based Study

The past research concerning pets mostly focused on the assistance rendered by pets. Due to the climate of lesser child and never-go marry, more and more people treat pets like their children indeed. What they care does not limit to practical purposes such as guard and accompany, but also the pet¡¦s needs. They are willing to offer their pets all sorts of foods, goods and services so that their pets are happy with. On the other hand, the video technology reaches its maturity and is widely applied to mobile communication, house monitoring, and kindergarten monitoring. In addition, such technology is accessed to pet hotels, pet parlors, pet sitters and pet clinics where the pet owners can surf on their 3G phones to watch their pets at any time. This study aims to explore the pet owners¡¦ recognition of perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use and use intention in terms of video technology. This study is based on the framework of TAM, using raising attitude as external variable whereas subjective norm as independent variable to willingness to use. The questionnaires were sent to the pet owners through random sampling in Taiwan. 481 copies were retrieved and conducted SPSS and AMOS analysis. The findings indicate that all hypotheses are validated except two hypotheses- one is the pet owners ¡¥s mental propensity toward their pets is not related to the perceived ease of use of video technology, the other is perceived ease of use is not related to use intention. Therefore, the results confirm that¡G1. The feelings of the pet owners for their pets incur positive impact on their recognition toward the perceived usefulness, perceived ease of use of video technology, 2. With subjective norm, the pet owners are more willing to use video technology. 3. If video technology facilitated easy caring for pets, the pet owners could easily recognize its perceived usefulness. 4. If the pet owners consider video technology perceived usefulness for keeping their pets, they have no intention to use such device to care about their pets. 5. For pet business sectors, it is imperative to make use of video technology in order to convince the pet owners of its conveniences which can be always appealing to the pet owners.
