In this dissertation, we examined the raising phenomenon of constituents in the spoken form of the Portuguese language, in spoken Portuguese variant in the northwestern of Sao Paulo. The raising, a phenomenon that manifests itself in complement clause contexts, is defined in the functional-typological literature as the occurrence of argumental constituent of the clause predicate embedded within the limits of the matrix clause, with consequent adjustment of case and concordance in this domain, and reduction of the embedded to the infinitive form. For the empirical research, we used as corpora speech samples of the northwest region of the Sao Paulo state, from the Iboruna data Bank, in which we identified two kinds of raising: (i) raising from subject to subject and (ii) raising from object to subject. Our analysis is carried out qualitatively and quantitatively in order to verify the working of morphosyntactic (argumental relation of the raised constituent to the embedded predicate; format of the embedded clause, concordance within the limits of the matrix and embedded clause; presence of copy pronoun within the embedded clause; transitivity of the embedded clause; morphological class of the matrix predicate, modal-tense correlation and expression form of the connection between the matrix and embedded clauses, structural type and number-person of the raised NP), semantic (semantic type of matrix predicate and referentiality, animacy and semantic role of the raised constituent) and discursive-pragmatic (relevance and informational status of the raised constituent) parameters. In the light of the functionalist assumptions of language and organization of the grammatical system, we distinguish raising from other functionally motivated similar phenomena that take place along the embedded clauses (Equi-deletion, Topicalization and Left deslocation). Our path culminates with the understanding that not all typological criteria for identification of the raising consistently apply to the BP data, at the risk of the exclusion of the phenomenon of typical cases of raised constituent which do not present reduced embedded clause and/or morphosyntactic adjustments in the matrix boundaries, pointing to two predictions: phenomenon compatibility also embedded in finite form and the conception that the Raising is a morphosyntactic phenomenon that finds motivation in semantic and discourse-pragmatic factors.

Modelo de apuração de resultado para o segmento mental-mecânico sob a ótica do GECON: um estudo baseado nas indústrias de Joaçaba - Santa Catarina / Income examination model from the metal-mechanical segment under GECON'S optics: a study based on the industries from Joaçaba - Santa Catarina.

Marcos Luiz Comini 16 December 2003 (has links)
The objective of this study is to present an economic result raising model to support the managers' decision making and it allow a correct presentation of the companies' economic situation. Our purpose is to present a model that must be the rightest one, which is expressed in the information system and fortified on adequated elements to make that the managers' decision making become the ones that improve the company's result. This research has been developed to point out and define the problem situation of the case. The objective of such research is to point out the entity from metal-mechanical section from Joaçaba, Santa Catarina, the one which we will study and present the solution. In this study we do not intend to testify a solution against the problem, but establish a result raising model. A model based on GECON - economical management concepts has been created, emphasizing the use of the opportunity cost on the economical resources measurement obtained and used in the activities of the departments, mainly in the production department, reproducing its economical and physical aspects, admitted at the moment of the transaction and identified with an activity of the corresponding department. This model shows the contribution of each activity, operating and financial, of the departments, accepted as responsability areas for the company's result and showing the added value. Finally, the orgizational effectiveness improvement needs an information system to support the managers in the management process. The result raising model belongs to a serie of actions inside the information system with the aim to get the effectiveness, measure the performance, support the manager on his decision making and expand more the continuity of the business.

Evaluating a primary school programme aimed at increasing awareness of domestic abuse

Mathewson, Lynne Catherine January 2011 (has links)
This research focuses on an awareness raising programme for primary school children in relation to domestic abuse. This area of research was considered to be of value due to the prevalence of DA and the impact that witnessing domestic abuse has been shown to have on children. Findings from the 2008/2009 British Crime Survey (Coleman, Osborne, Kaiza & Roe, 2010) show that more than one in four women (28%) and around one in six men (16%) have experienced domestic abuse since they were 16. Considerable research exists which suggests that witnessing domestic abuse can have a profound impact on a child’s life, development and psychological well being (Dodd, 2009). This research evaluates a pilot of a six week programme aimed at increasing awareness of domestic abuse in primary schools. There currently exists a gap in knowledge about the effectiveness of small-scale classroom based domestic abuse awareness raising programmes delivered in primary schools. Previous research has focused on larger scale projects often involving external agencies (Home Office, 2005) and work in secondary schools (Bell and Stanley, 2006).The programme was co-delivered by the TEP and school staff to Year Five pupils in three primary schools within a local authority. Staff and pupil views were obtained through focus groups with pupils and semi-structured interviews with teaching staff. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data in order to answer questions about the programmes strengths and weaknesses; views about the involvement of a Trainee Educational Psychologist (TEP); and pupils' understanding of domestic abuse. The findings suggest that staff and pupils thought the programme was valuable and improved children's knowledge of aspects of domestic abuse. The findings are discussed with reference to best practice and issues to consider in relation to the wider implementation and evaluation of the programme.

Corporate sponsorships at NCAA division I-A independent colleges

Downey, Kevin C. 21 November 2012 (has links)
This study was conducted to determine what the most frequently used methods were in obtaining corporate sponsors for athletic departments. A questionnaire was sent to all NCAA division Iâ A independent colleges (N = 24) in the United States. Twenty-one athletic departments returned the questionnaire for a response rate of 88%. The questionnaire investigated several areas of corporate sponsorship programs in the athletic departments: (a) staff size, (b) types of solicitation used to attract corporate sponsors (c) the athletic department's association with corporate sponsor, (d) the location of corporate sponsor, and (e) the benefits received by both corporate sponsor and the athletic department. Two important findings were made because of the study. First, 80% of the corporate sponsors used were either vendors or sponsors who employed alumni. Seventy-four percent of the corporate sponsors were located between zero and one hundred and fifty miles from the university. / Master of Science

Farm Aid : a fantasy theme analysis

Anderson, Shawny L. January 1987 (has links)
The Farm Aid benefit concert in September of 1985 was one member of a long list of such philanthropic events. It proved itself unique, however, in a number of ways. Most notably, the concert failed to reach the goals which its organizers had set, unlike most of the other benefits of the same decade. This study attempted to explain the failure of the event.Chapter One is an introduction which helps to justify the study, review existing literature on the subject, and preview the method used within the analysis. Chapter Two includes a general history of benefit concerts, helping to explain the evolution of such persuasive events.Concerts such as the early work of Harry Chapin, the Concert for Bangladesh, Concerts for Kampuchea, and others are discussed. The contemporary trend of successful benefits including the Band Aid, USA for Africa, and Live Aid efforts are also considered, helping to establish the context in which Farm Aid occurred.Next, an explanation of the situation facing American farmers in 1985 is provided, establishing the need for the concert.Chapter Three is an evaluation of the fantasy themes presented to the American public by the media. By chronologically examing the changes in the characters, plots, and settings set forth by the media, certain general themes can be identified. These themes glorified the effort and its participants, conjuring high expectations in the minds of many Americans. Those expectations could not be met, however, guaranteeing failure for the event.Chapter Four draws conclusions about the weaknesses of Farm Aid. By examining the timing of the concert, its focus, and the persuasive appeals used by its participants, the study reveals that Farm Aid's failure was the result of a combination of different factors. First, the organizers had left themselves very little time to plan the event. Also, many Americans were suffering from boredom with the notion of the benefit concert after the highly successful events which preceded Farm Aid. The ideas expressed within the concert were not focused in a unified manner. Different participants presented differing appeals for action, making the public's role in the event unclear. Finally, the appeals which were presented were not well planned, preventing them from adequately moving the public. In general, the media had created a picture in the minds of the public that could not be fulfilled, especially not with the weak attempts of the concert's participants.

There is a Silver Lining.

Crowell-Hilde, Kaki D. 01 August 2003 (has links)
I investigated two unique processes developed throughout this body of work. The first technique is the cracking and lifting of an electroformed layer from a core vessel form. The second process, that I named “crunch-raising”, is used to form vessels. General data is gathered through research of traditional metalsmithing processes. Using an individualized approach, new data is gathered through extensive experimentation to develop a knowledge base because specific reference information does not currently exist. I find that an electroformed layer can be lifted from a core form with extreme torch heat to reveal the underlining vessel. I also find that the “crunch-raising” technique leaves a rippled texture in the surface of a vessel as it is being formed. I conclude that the project is successful. It is quite significant in that it has given me a personal vocabulary to define my current work.
