Power and Nostalgia in Eras of Cultural Rebirth: The Timeless Allure of the Farnese AntinousLaManna, Kathleen 01 April 2013 (has links)
Little did Hadrian know in 130 A.D. that when he deified his beloved departed Antinous, in order to provide a unifying symbol of worship for his diverse empire, that he was instead creating a lasting symbol of the antique world. This thesis examines the power of nostalgia and its successful use by two formidable men from different eras in Rome: The Emperor Hadrian and the extravagantly wealthy Renaissance merchant Agostino Chigi. Though separated by centuries, each man used the nostalgic allure of the beautiful youthful male figure of Antinous to gain power and influence in his own time and to leave a lasting impact on generations to come. Using the statue known as the Farnese Antinous I will show that these very different men were not so different after all: each understood the human tendency to romanticize the past, and each attempted to evoke a feeling of nostalgia for the past from those they sought to “conquer.” Hadrian used portraits of Antinous to unite an empire and cement his place in history; Agostino used one of those very same portraits in commissioned artworks by Raphael to earn his place among the nobility of his day, and to leave a lasting legacy for his descendants.

An investigation into twentieth century flute trios with special reference to representative works by Goossens, Sil'vansky, Raphael, Damase, Marx and CrumbHeunis, Daniela January 1994 (has links)
This thesis ventures into the world of twentieth century chamber music, specifically the trios written for flute, cello and piano. The first chapter discusses the history of the trio, tracing its development from the trio sonata of the Baroque Period to the accompanied sonatas and specifically the sonatas with flute and cello obbligato. Following the unpopularity of the genre throughout the Romantic period, its greater prominence in the Twentieth century is discussed, mentioning specific groups through whom the repertoire has been extended. Forty trios are grouped according to compositional styles. Six trios, each representing an example of a specific style period, have been selected for more detailed discussion, with particular reference to the various ways in which a sense of unity is achieved in each trio. The English composer Eugene Goossens uses impressionistic images, whole tone and chromatic scale patterns and other motifs to unify his trio: "Five Impressions of a Holiday". Nikolay Iosifovich Sil'vansky's "The Hedgehog and the Nightingale" is based on a Russian tale by Juri Jarmicha and uses a narrator. The three characters are represented by specific motivic and / or thematic material which is used throughout the trio. Günter Raphael's Trio-Suite op 44 is the only cyclic work unifying the two outer movements, without repeating any additional motivic material. Jean-Michel Damase condenses some of the material introduced in the opening Prelude in both the two Largo's and the two Arias in his "Sonate en Concert" of 1950. Karl Julius Marx builds his entire "Trio op 61" on a flexible six-note motif. Various movements in the trio" Vox Ba1aenae" by the American George Crumb are 1inked through the use of motives and characteristic instrumental colour. A comprehensive list of 180 twentieth century trios has been compiled, including details of dedications, commissions and first performances. 163 composers from twenty countries, are represented.

The Hidden Secrets of Historical ArtistryMusser, Jennifer B 01 January 2021 (has links)
When I began developing the video game concept for my thesis, I realized that I was one of the kids that grew up in a society where video games took prevalence over historical artistry. I, however, was unaware of the hidden secrets that resided in the art and how much they contribute to the video games I enjoy playing today. This thesis aims to provide the younger generations with an engaging and stimulating way to experience historical artistry, more specifically the Italian Renaissance, without having to consult a history book. I aim to provide enough detail on multiple aspects of the movement to bring it to life in the classroom via any video game platform. Students need to develop an awareness of the benefits our digital culture gained over the centuries from the Italian Renaissance; therefore, I aspire to provide present-day children and teenagers with the ability to learn about the movement by doing one of the things they love most: playing video games. Although the art is most intriguing in its natural form, one must stay up to date with the changing times and provide the next generation with the artistic knowledge on which they might rely in their future career.

Shakespeare’s Game of Trick or Treat : The Function of the Witches as Deliverers of Prophecy in Shakespeare’s MacbethEkman, Annika January 2024 (has links)
It is a generally accepted scholarly truth that Shakespeare’s Macbeth was written with the intent of pleasing the newly crowned James I, a few years after his ascension to the English throne in 1603. The main arguments for this claim are, first, Shakespeare’s inclusion of witches—a well-known interest of James’s—and second, the portrayal of Banquo, the fictional ancestor of the House of Stuart. Some recent scholarship has, however, questioned this view, arguing, among other things, that James did not wish to be associated with his Scottish heritage and that witchcraft is not as prominent in Shakespeare’s play as it might have been if pleasing James was his objective. In this paper, I look specifically at the part of the theory of “the royal play” which pertains to the question of the witches and, against the background of this recent research, argue that Shakespeare’s reasons for including witches in his play have less to do with James and more to do with his own interest in human psychology. By analysing the ways in which Shakespeare adapts his sources—the chronicles of Raphael Holinshed and Hector Boece—I argue, first, that Shakespeare is less interested in catering specifically to James’s demonological theories than to make the three women into witches as such. Secondly, I compare the function of prophecy in Macbeth to Greek tragedy and the historical writing of Holinshed and Boece against the sociological theory of George Park and argue that Shakespeare’s purpose in letting witches function as the deliverers of prophecy is to create an element of uncertainty and thus a vantage point from which to explore the psychological complexities of human decision-making and the perils of trusting appearances.

"Můj děsivý stín, jenž mne stále provází": Literární a umělecké zobrazení Richarda III před Shakespearem / "My fearefull shadow that still followes me": Literary and Artistic Representations of Richard III before ShakespeareŠtollová, Jitka January 2013 (has links)
THESIS ABSTRACT This MA thesis examines the portrayal of King Richard III (1452-1485) in texts preceding William Shakespeare's canonical play on this subject. By analyzing a wide range of sources written between the 1480s and the 1590s, it traces how the reputation of Richard III as an epitome of a tyrant, a usurper and a royal murderer was created and consolidated. At the same time, special attention is paid to innovations and deviations from this interpretation that contributed to the diversification of the King's image. The first chapter covers some of the most significant historiographic works of the Tudor era: The Second Continuation of The Crowland Chronicle, chronicles by Polydore Vergil, Edward Hall, and Raphael Holinshed, Thomas More's historical narrative, as well as a less-known manuscript by Dominic Mancini who described the early months of the reign of Richard III. The second chapter examines the transformation of the historical topic into poetry. The image of Richard III is analyzed in as diverse sources as, on the one hand, a popular ballad and, on the other hand, a prominent poetically-didactic work A Mirror for Magistrates. The representation of Richard III on the English stage is discussed in the third chapter in connection with Thomas Legge's university drama Richardus Tertius and the...

Previous issue date: 2018-03-23 / Conselho Nacional de Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico - CNPq / The recent history of our country is formed by institutional violence and disregard for the rule of law. The experiences of those who have faced dictatorial impositions should be examples of the struggle for a better country. In this way, Raphael Martinelli's memoirs become important for the understanding of the period for this research, from 1939 to 1973. Trade unionism, especially in the Santos Jundiaí railroad, and the struggle against the civil-military dictatorship established after 1964, are examples of topics to be reflected and observed, so that we can review concepts and values today.
This work attempts to trace a biography of political activist Raphael Martinelli, who has his life summarized in: a quick pass for youth football, the team of the São Paulo Athletic Club, current National Athletic Club, the experience of being a railroad in the São Paulo Railway, the presidency of the Railroad Workers' Union in São Paulo and the National Federation of Railroad Workers, head of the CGT, political persecution with the 1964 coup, participation in the National Liberation Action (ALN) and imprisonment in 1971, in Operation Bandeirante (Oban).
The documentation used for this research is summarized in the biography “Iron Stations: Raphael Martinelli”; documents from your personal collection, such as police records, videos, interviews.
To know the history of Martinelli is to get in touch with moments of political and social changes of our country. Its context of life is marked by four central points, that divided the chapters of this thesis: soccer, railroad, syndicalism and armed struggle. The themes are discussed from their experiences and memories. Through them we can see other possibilities, from a country that at the moment when it was learning to discuss democratic issues, such as the Basic Reforms, proposed by President João Goulart; and the relations between workers through their main representation, the union, suffered a heavy blow, with the seizure of power by the military, backed by civilian sectors, as wealthy landowners / A história recente de nosso país é formada pela violência institucional e pelo desrespeito ao estado de direito.

This pretty Christian muse” : the figure of saint Cecilia in literature and arts in Europe in the 19th centuryLebarbier, Amandine 09 December 2017 (has links)
This thesis aims to show the important role played by the figure of Saint Cecilia in the European musical psyche in the 19th century. The first part of this work is devoted to the historiography of Saint Cecilia, from the fifth century to the 19th century, and to the inclusion of the figure in the European cultural space. Various media have contributed to make this legendary Roman patrician a celebrated and famous patron saint but, first and foremost, is the picture of Raphael, The Ecstasy of St. Cecilia. During the first half of the 19th century this artistic European heritage artwork is the subject of a true fascination for the writers, musicians and painters. This thesis tries to understand the reasons why. In the second phase, this thesis shows that the figure of Saint Cecilia is a trope figure, a vivid allegory, used by many writers to construct a discourse on music, art and the relationship between the arts. During the 19th century there were several strong phases of focus on Saint Cecilia, each leading to recharge the figure with a vivid breath. She then imposes herself, no longer as a figure of persistence only, but rather as the possibility of thinking about transcendence and of constructing an aesthetic discourse. The third axis of this research focuses on gender studies. Heiress to several types of feminine representations, Saint Cecilia appears as an analogical tool, rich in ideological presuppositions on the representation of women and women musicians. Representation of an eternal feminine fantasy, the female musicians associated to Saint Cecilia are the guarantors of an ideological memory which encloses the female musician in a very restricted area of the musical practice.

NUOVE RICERCHE PER LA BIOGRAFIA E LA PRODUZIONE STORIOGRAFICA DI CARLO BIANCONI (1732-1802)BINDA, LAURA 22 May 2017 (has links)
New information and analysis about Carlo Bianconi’s biography and writings mainly appear from unpublished archival material bare. This work allows to clarify the education of Bianconi, who grew up in a family of bibliophiles and art collectors. He kept abreast of theoretical development of Winckelmann and Mengs, who personally knew and he gradually moved closer and accepted the models of the classicism that was also mediated by the relationship established with Francesco Algarotti, who is here reevaluate. Regarding his two-year period spent in Rome, the relationship with the Cardinal Albani and moreover his trip to Naples, a glimmer is opened, with important implications for his intellectual maturity. Furthermore, there are: the reason regarding the choice of Bianconi as Secretary of the Academy of Brera, his educational initiatives and the relationship with Carlo di Firmian. From time to time, his many correspondents, his figurative works of art and especially his published writings were commented (for example the guide of Bologna and Milan) and his unpublished writings (such as Vitruvius, theoretical writings on the origin of architecture and engraving, orations) are remembered and also the collaboration with the Enciclopedia Metodica of Pietro Zani is reconsidered. Artist, collector, art writer and teacher, immersed in a climate of a Rationalism, he is a early supporter of the new taste for the classic.
