No / The industrial heritage for the City of Bradford Metropolitan District is of international significance, with the city formerly being the centre of the world’s worsted trade during the nineteenth century. The intensification of textile production during the industrial revolution resulted in exponential growth of all aspects of the city, the legacy seen in the townscape heritage of the city today. The structures from this period have played a key role in defining the city’s identity. Since the decline of the textile industry the fabric of many of these buildings from the city’s golden age are under threat and at high risk of loss due to weathering, vandalism and fire. Given the varied nature and condition of these structures, a rapid approach has been applied that complements initiatives in train with Bradford Council to regenerate the ‘Top of Town’; that are reflective of Historic England’s ‘Engines of Prosperity’ report into the regeneration of Industrial Heritage; and with the Management of Saltaire World Heritage site. This chapter focuses on the digital documentation of a conservation area which is highly vulnerable, producing a dataset to aid conservation, management, interpretation and promotion of Bradford’s rich heritage.

No / Assessing the pulse is a common procedure and an important aspect of many nursing interventions; it should always be done with care and reassessed as needed. Assessment should always be taken seriously, with any deviations from the norm reported to a senior clinician, and pulse rate, rhythm and strength must always be documented. Pulses indicate numerous patient characteristics including the degree of relaxation, regularity of cardiac contractions and sufficiency of cardiac output. This article considers the relevant anatomy, physiology and practice of pulse assessment and recording.

This research investigated several aspects of passive acoustic monitoring (PAM) which were previously unexplored or understudied. A comparison of autonomous recording units (ARUs) for use with BirdNET for the purpose of bird monitoring was conducted. Four ARUs were compared, including AudioMoth, SM4, SMMicro, and SwiftOne. We found that, of the performance metrics for which ARU choice made a statistically significant difference (P>0.01), which included sensitivity, specificity, F1 harmonic mean, and Matthews Correlation Coefficient, (but not precision: P = 0.94), AudioMoth had the best performance for all statistically significant performance metrics except for specificity, for which SMMicro had the highest. The same audio was then processed using 18 combinations of Overlap and Sensitivity, including default settings. We found that Overlap and Sensitivity values were highly significant (P>0.001) for all performance metrics: precision, sensitivity, specificity, F1 harmonic mean, and Matthews Correlation Coefficient. No individual Overlap-Sensitivity setting combination performed outperformed others in most of the performance metrics; however, in general, as Overlap or Sensitivity increased, the number of true and false positive species reports increased while the number of false negatives decreased. Four confidence-based threshold types were then used to filter BirdNET output to compare threshold performances, comparing two arbitrary thresholds and two species-specific thresholds which were calculated using manual validation data. Of the thresholds tested, one of the arbitrary threshold types and one of the species-specific threshold types achieved a precision ≥ 0.95. We hope this research will help guide PAM decisions regarding ARU choice, BirdNET settings, and threshold type choice.

This thesis focuses on the recording challenges faced in biomedical systems. More specifically, the challenges in neural signal recording are explored. Instead of the typical synchronous ADC system, a level crossing ADC is detailed as it has gained recent interest for low-power biomedical systems. These systems take advantage of the time-sparse nature of the signals found in this application. A 10-bit design is presented to help capture the lower amplitude action potentials (APs) in neural signals. The design also achieves a full-scale bandwidth of 1.2 kHz, an ENOB of 9.81, a power consumption of 13.5 microwatts, operating at a supply voltage of 1.8 V. This design was simulated in Cadence using 180 nm CMOS technology.

Advanced scanning magnetoresistive microscopy (SMRM) — a robust magnetic imaging and probing technique — is presented. It utilizes conventional recording heads of a hard disk drive as sensors. The spatial resolution of modern tunneling magnetoresistive sensors is nowadays comparable with more commonly used magnetic force microscopes. Important advantages of SMRM are the ability to detect pure magnetic signals directly proportional to the out-of-plane magnetic stray field, negligible sensor stray fields, and the ability to apply local bipolar magnetic field pulses up to 10 kOe with bandwidths from DC up to 1 GHz. The performance assessment of this method and corresponding best practices are discussed in the first section of this work. An application example of SMRM, the study on chemically ordered L10 FePt is presented in a second section. A constructed heater unit of SMRM opens the path to investigate temperature-dependent magnetic properties of the medium by recording and imaging at elevated temperatures. L10 FePt is one of the most promising materials to reach limits in storage density of future magnetic recording devices based on heat-assisted magnetic recording (HAMR). In order to be implemented in an actual recording scheme, the medium Curie temperature should be lowered. This will reduce the power requirements, and hence, wear and tear on a heat source — integrated plasmonic antenna. It is expected that the exchange coupling of FePt to thin Fe layers provides high saturation magnetization and elevated Curie temperature of the composite. The addition of Cu allows adjusting the magnetic properties such as perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, coercivity, saturation magnetization, and Curie temperature. This should lead to a lowering of the switching field of the hard magnetic FeCuPt layer and a reduction of thermally induced recording errors. In this regard, the influence of the Fe layer thickness on the switching behavior of the hard layer was investigated, revealing a strong reduction for Fe layer thicknesses larger than the exchange length of Fe. The recording performance of single-layer and bilayer structures was studied by SMRM roll-off curves and histogram methods at temperatures up to 180 °C In the last section of this work, SMRM advantages are demonstrated by various experiments on a two-dimensional magnetic vortex lattice. Magnetic vortex is a peculiar complex magnetization configuration which typically appears in a soft magnetic structured materials. It consists of two coupled sub-systems: the core, where magnetization vector points perpendicular to the structure plane, and the curling magnetization where magnetic flux is rotating in-plane. The unique properties of a magnetic vortex making it an object of a great research and technological interest for spintronic applications in sensorics or data storage. Manipulation of the vortex core as well as the rotation sense by applying a local field pulse is shown. A spatially resolved switching map reveals a significant "write window" where vortex cores can be addressed correctly. Moreover, the external in-plane magnet extension unit allow analyzing the magnetic vortex rotational sense which is extremely practical for magnetic coupling investigations of magnetic coupling phenomena.

A presente pesquisa investiga os caminhos trilhados pelas gravadoras de discos 78rpm que atuaram na cidade de São Paulo, desde a inauguração da gravação elétrica até a consolidação do rádio. Analisa-se, especialmente. o processo de incorporação, seleção, ou recriação das empresas fonográficas diante da produção musical brasileira. A tecnologia elétrica conferiu uma densidade sonora inédita à reprodução das músicas e alterou profundamente a experiência auditiva do ouvinte, a forma de conceber a gravação de sons por parte das companhias fonográficas, e a sua relação com as empresas de radiofonia, criando um modelo de atuação que será utilizado ao longo de todo o século XX. Como objeto privilegiado de análise estão as primeiras séries de gravações produzidas na capital paulistana, cujos acordes e vozes registrados - como os tangos, gravados nos anos 20 - foram emudecidos pelo esquecimento ou pelas péssimas condições de conservação dos fonogramas; outros - como a \"música caipira\", ou os choros e as valsas - foram intensamente reproduzidos pelas rádios e vitrolas, e permanecem vivos até hoje em nossa memória musical. / This work examines the paths follwed by the 78rpm disc recording companies, that operated in São Paulo city, since the inauguration of the electric recording process, until the consolidation of the radio companies. Particularly, the record companies\' processes of incorporation, selection and re-creation of brazilian music are analyzed. The new technology granted an unprecedented density to the sounds reproduced by the victrola and deeply transformed the listener\'s auditive experience. It also changed the way that the recording companies conceived the recording process and their relation with the radio companies, creating an operating paradigm that would be used during the whole 20th century. The first series of records produced in the city of São Paulo are the main research objects analyzed, which voices and chords registered - like tangos, recorded during the 1920\'s - were silenced by the forgetfullness or the discs\' bad conditions of conservation; others - like the \"caipira music\", \"choro\" or valses - were intensily reproduced by the radio or victrolas, and remain alive in our musical memory.
