Analyzing and sharing data for surface combat weapons systems

Wilhelm, Gary L. 12 1900 (has links)
Approved for public release, distribution is unlimited / Test and evaluation of system performance has been a critical part of the acceptance of combat weapon systems for the Department of Defense. As combat weapon systems have become more complex, evaluation of system performance has relied more heavily on recorded test data. As part of the on-going transformation of the Defense department, Commercial-Off- The-Shelf (COTS) technology is being integrated into the acquisition of combat weapon systems. An Analysis Control Board (ACB) was created in response to these factors to support the AEGIS Weapon System Program Office. The focus of this ACB was to investigate and provide potential solutions to Data Dictionary, Data Recording and Data Reduction (R2D2) issues to the AEGIS Program Manager. This thesis discusses the history of the R2D2 ACB and its past, present and future directions. Additionally, this thesis examines how the R2D2 ACB concept could be applied to the DD(X) Next Generation Destroyer program. / Civilian, United States Navy

Determinants of neuronal firing patterns in the hippocampus

Tukker, Jan Johan January 2009 (has links)
The activity of networks subserving memory and learning in the hippocampus is under the control of GABAergic interneurons. In order to test the contribution of distinct cell types, I have recorded extracellularly, labelled, and identified different types of interneuron in area CA3 of the hippocampus, a region implicated in the generation of gamma and theta oscillations, and the initiation of sharp-waves. I present here a detailed analysis of the spike timing of parvalbumin-positive (PV) basket and physiologically identified pyramidal cells in area CA3, relative to various network states recorded in area CA3 and CA1 simultaneously. Additionally, I have shown by detailed analysis that five classes of previously recorded and identified CA1 interneuron fired with cell type specific firing patterns relative to local gamma oscillations. In CA3, PV basket cells fired phase locked to theta and gamma oscillations recorded in CA1 as well as in CA3, and increased their firing rates during CA1 sharp-waves. Pyramidal cells in CA3 were also phase-locked, but fired at phases different from basket cells. During theta oscillations, CA3 pyramidal and PV basket cells were phase locked to both CA1 and CA3 theta equally, suggesting a wide coherence of these oscillations; in contrast, cells fired more strongly phase-locked to gamma oscillations in CA3 than in CA1, suggesting a specific role for CA3 in the generation of this rhythm. In contrast to theta and gamma oscillations, CA3 basket cells were phase-locked to ripples in area CA3 but not in CA1. Overall, my results show that the spike timing of several types of interneuron in CA1, and PV basket cells in CA3, is correlated in a cell- and area-specific manner with the generation of particular states of synchronous activity.

Intermétalliques magnétiques praséodyme-cobaltnanostructurés : étude multiéchelle et optimisation / Intermetallic praseodymium-cobalt magnetic nanostructured : multiscale study and optimization

Fersi, Riadh 09 July 2012 (has links)
Nous avons utilisé différentes méthodes de caractérisation à savoir : la diffraction de rayon X (DRX), la microscopie électronique à transmission (MET) couplée avec l'analyse EDX,la Magnéto/susceptométre Manics DSM-8 / This work falls within the general framework of the structural and magnetic nanomaterials based magnetic rare earth (R) and transition metal (T) whose domain of application concerns the permanent magnets or magnetic recording high density. In search of new magnetic phases in performance characteristics, we were interested in the alloy Pr2Co7. This compound has interesting hard magnetic properties: high Curie temperature and uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy important. From the perspective of magnetic exchange interactions Co-Co are the strongest, followed by R-Co interaction, while the RR interactions are very weak. The dominance of Co-Co interactions induces relatively high Curie temperatures in compounds Pr2Co7.The magnetocrystalline anisotropy results from the combination of two networks uniaxial anisotropy praseodymium and cobalt. To strengthen these interactions, it is necessary to partially substitute cobalt in compounds Pr2Co7 by an appropriate element such as iron which has a radius slightly larger than that of cobalt or by insertion of a light element the hydrogen and carbon that can increase the interatomic distances and enhance the magnetic moment. Moreover, along with intrinsic magnetic properties improves, it is necessary to optimize the extrinsic magnetic properties of the alloy by the search for a suitable nanocrystalline state corresponding to the potential applications. The extrinsic properties of compounds Pr2Co7 have been little studied.Several methods were used for the development of nanomaterials. In our study, we have W arranty the technique of high energy milling followed by recrystallization controlled synthesis method which until then had not yet been used to synthesize this type of compound. At this scale, the grain size becomes of the order of magnitude of the exchange length. This method which is a non-equilibrium synthesis process, allows the production of nanostructured powders metastable from a mixture of elemental powders. This technique is particularly effective in the case of alloys based on rare earth (Pr, Sm ...) that are extremely volatile. Indeed, it avoids the liquid state since the reaction takes place below the melting temperature and led to reproducible and large quantities of homogeneous alloys. We used different characterization methods, namely: the X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) coupled with EDX analysis, the magneto / susceptometer Manics DSM-8

Métodos substitutivos ao uso de animais vivos no ensino de graduação em medicina veterinária: procedimentos em roedores de laboratório / Substitutive methods for live animals use in the veterinary medicine education: procedures on laboratory rodents

Zanatto, Dennis Albert 12 December 2018 (has links)
Following an international trend, the animals use in education has been replaced by alternatives such as computer programs, mannequins, simulators, videos and routine clinical case management. According to current legislation and in response to the growing demand from students and professors, alternative methods can better achieve educational objectives, reduce costs, and avoid the negative pedagogical and social impact of animal research. The present study aimed to propose and evaluate an alternative method for the traditional teaching of procedures on laboratory animals. For this purpose, a complete teaching content with scientific basis was produced to be used as part of the Laboratory Animal Science course for the undergraduate students at Faculdade de Medicina Veterinária e Zootecnia da Universidade de São Paulo. The content demonstrating how to perform the main experimental procedures on laboratory rats was produced in digital media, including videos and images, which were hosted in Good Practice in Animal Experimentation Portal (BPEA) (http://www.bpeanimal.iq.usp.br). The main handling and restrain techniques of laboratory rats, and drug administration procedures, through different routes, such as oral (gavage), intramuscular, intraperitoneal, intravenous, subcutaneous and intradermal were performed. The blood collection routes and techniques were also recorded, as follows: lateral tail vein, saphenous vein, gingival vein and intracardiac puncture. The sciatic nerve anesthetic blocking technique was also been demonstrated. The content was available online in the BPEA portal, and used as a teaching content for the Laboratory Animals Science course. Thus, the present study complies with the National Council for Animal Experimentation Control (CONCEA) regulations, which regulates animals use in education, resulting in better assimilation of content, as evidenced by the good performance of the students. The method was well received by the veterinary students, and could avoid both students and animals stress during a routine procedure. Attending to the economic pressures of the government in the universities, the method proposed here provides a substantial financial saving when compared to living animals use. In conclusion, this study developed a new alternative methodology for the use of living animals. All content produced was posted in BPEA portal, being available for veterinary students, providing an unprecedented legacy for teaching of veterinary science in Brazil.

Stabilité conformationnelle et dépliement de la protéine MalE : Étude par nanopore et par spectroscopie RMN / Conformationnal stability and unfolding of the maltose binding protein

Merstorf, Céline 15 December 2011 (has links)
We study the unfolding-transport mechanism of the Maltose Binding Protein (MBP or MalE), a periplasm protein of E. Coli and a destabilised variant, the MalE219, as the function of the concentration of denaturing agent, Guanidine Hydrochloride(GdnHCl) at the single molecule level. The technique is based on the electrical detection of the macromolecule transport through a nanometer-scale channel, Aerolysin channel, inserted into a planar lipid bilayer. Results obtained were compared to previous data with another channel, the alpha-Hemolysin. Both channels have different geometry and net charge. We show that we can distinguish unfolded states from partially folded ones with aerolysin pore.Unfolded proteins induce short current blockades, their duration is constant as a function of the concentration of denaturing agent. Partially folded proteins exhibit long blockades whose life times decrease as the concentration of GdnHCl increase, this indicates a possible glassy dynamics. The frequency of the short current blockades increases as the concentration of denaturing agent increases, following a sigmoidal denaturation curve. The unfolding curve of native MBP with Aerolysin pore is similar to the one previously measured with Hemolysin channel. The denaturation curve of the destabilized variant obtained with Aerolysin is shifted towards lower value of GdnHCl concentration in agreement with bulk measurements. We show also that the addition of maltose stabilizes the structure of MalE219. This nanopore recording technique is also suitable for the study of unfolding and conformation changes of proteins. In order to obtain structural informations that nanopore recording cannot provides, the structure of MBP along its denaturation curve was studied by NMR spectroscopy. The Hydrogen-exchange method known to be sensitive to folding intermediates was specially used. It consists in tracking hydrogen-deuterium exchange rates for amino on the 2D 1H-15N HSQC spectra. Thus, 180 residus of 370 for MBP was followed during denaturation in the presence of GdnHCl. The two last helices in C-terminal of MBP are accessible to the solvent and are denaturated easily. MBP is a two domains protein, N-ter domain and C-ter domain. It was found out that the C- and D-domain of MBP (mainly alpha-helices) could be relatively stable in presence of denaturing agent and that beta strands which make the link between the two domains would be affected by the denaturing agent. It was proposed that partially unfolded proteins enter the pore by the C-terminal end and that stable tertiary structure still present block the pore.

Poetry Outside the Book. A Study on Oralisations of Poetry in France from 1945 to the 1960s

Dutournier, Céline 06 December 2012 (has links)
Between 1945 and 1960, French poetry tended to re-explore its oral roots with radio and television broadcasting, recording and live performance. Theatres developed, aside from poetical performances, some attempts for staged poems. The “question of the book” in its relation to other media turned out to be central in the poetical imagination and debates of the time: some endeavoured to rethink the communication modes of poems, to open the poetical field to a wider public, to explore the possibilities offered by new recording and sound broadcasting techniques, others tried to use the media as a poetical performance space. This dissertation, which collects many written and audiovisual archives, surveys the oralisation of French poetry between 1945 and the 1960s and attempts to reassess, through the detailed study of diverse forms of “poems outside the book”, the importance and the role of those practices in twentieth century poetry history.

A produção audiovisual como mediação na prática científica / Video-Recording production as a mediation in scientific practice.

Gonçalves, Denise Ramos 25 November 2013 (has links)
From March 2010 to December 2012, the Universitys of São Paulo Observatório de Comunicação, Liberdade de Expressão e Censura (OBCOM), developed the research Public Opinion and Censorship in Contemporary World (Opinião Pública e Censura no Mundo Contemporâneo). To arrest the complexity and the diversity of different points of view, multiple investigations apparatus were used, such as the video-recording production. We considered relevant, to enliven the debate, the implantation of audiovisual language in the empiric research work inside Humanities studies. This would justify the renewed possibilities of stance, approach, interaction and disclosing of scientific production and also, would highlight them. The process of this audiovisual proposal in its epistemological, technical and theoretical aspects is the object of this paper. Based on the production experience, we adopt a methodology that converges with contemporary experiences in Anthropology, Social Sciences, Cinema and Documentary. In light of this evidence, the main questions that the research points at are: a-) the debate about the images incorporation in scientific work and the validation of a methodology in empiric research with audiovisual resources; b-) the questioning of media uses in Communication Sciences; c-) how audiovisual resources were used in a research about public opinion and how we can analyze them; d-) the renewed stances of approach, interaction and divulgation of contemporary scientific production.

The Sonata of Band Management

Unknown Date (has links)
The Music Industry we knew 20 years ago has evolved into a completely different business. Major labels are scrambling to adapt to a new market created by digital streaming and the heavily dominated mobile environment. The purpose of this study is to explore the choice of remaining independent as a musician, and develop a systematic process that any aspiring artist or band manager can confidently follow to ensure their project has the best chance of success. Most of the published writings on this subject are either too broad, or too business-minded for the typical musician. This thesis provides a creative approach with the organization of the information. I present the process of band management in five chapters named after the five movements of traditional sonata form: The Introduction (Chapter 1) presents the various themes that are covered throughout the study, and describes the reasoning for using sonata form for organization and also elaborates on the author’s background. The Exposition (Chapter 2) describes the beginning stages of creating a band and establishing a creative project in the local music scene. This includes the initial formation of the band and its members, the process of networking within the local music scene, and an in depth explanation of how to effectively utilize all the “Essential Websites.” The Development (Chapter 3) describes the process of developing a band into a consistently gigging1 project. The main topics covered are booking shows, performing shows, recording and releasing an album, and what to focus on after it is released. The Recapitulation (Chapter 4) condenses the main topics of the thesis into a more palatable checklist of essential steps that musicians can easily reference throughout the process of managing their project. The Coda (Chapter 5) looks towards the future of the music industry, and serves as a prediction of how the previously effective methods apply to new technologies and website. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2015. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Albornoz, Javier Ignacio January 2016 (has links)
This work deals with the interpretation of the piano work Milonga Sureña of argentine composer Juan Jose Ramos ( 1930-1995 ), based on his relationship with the first popular milongas camperas of oral tradition of the mid-nineteenth century, and researching on them interpretative resources applicable to the work mentioned, which are characteristic of the style but are not specified in the score. Also three recordings of the work were analyzed and compared, two in the original version and one arrenged for two guitars. The analyzed elements were tempo, dynamics, articulation, and form, founding similarities and differences between them and also with the traditional milongas.
