Utilisation of reference management software by postgraduate students in the faculty of humanities at the University of Limpopo, South Africa

(Information Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2021 / The study investigated the awareness towards the and utilisation of Reference Management Software (RMS) by postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo, South Africa. The aim of the study was to examine the awareness and usage of RMS among postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities. The study sought to fulfil the following objectives, namely: to describe the types of RMS available for use in university libraries; to determine awareness of RMS by postgraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities at the University of Limpopo; to measure the extent to which postgraduate students in this faculty use RMS when writing academic papers; to identify the purposes for which the postgraduate students use RMS; and to identify postgraduate students’ perceptions regarding the use of RMS Quantitative research orientation though a survey research design were adopted in the study. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to 320 respondents and a total number of 244 questionnaires were returned and a response rate of 76% was achieved. The findings of the study show that most of the respondents (59%) were aware of the RMS. Most of the postgraduate students became familiar with the software through attending library training. However, the study found that the usage of RMS was low as 45% postgraduate students indicated that they have used RMS before whilst, 55% indicated that they have never used the RMS before. RefWorks remains the most popular used software among postgraduate students. Most of the respondents’ reason for using RMS amongst others was because they have received training, and some mentioned the fact that it was the only RMS they were familiar with. The study also found that the respondents use RMS to cite sources for assignments, research and papers, as well as to create reference list and collect and organise citations. The study revealed that the respondents like RMS because it assists and improves referencing. The study recommends for an intensified library training by academic librarians so that students should know advanced features of the RMS.

It also contains an overview and comparison with currently available reference management software. There are discussed bibliographic information export possibilities in various citation styles and formats. Final application is written in PHP scripting language and uses MySQL database.

Mot en delad framtid? : Mendeley som exempel på vetenskaplig kommunikation online / Towards a Shared Future? : Mendeley as an Example of Scientific Communication Online

The last few years have been characterised by increasing online communication and the emergence of social media, made possible by Web 2.0. In society as well as in research, social media is used for knowledge produc- tion and networking. One example of this is Mendeley, a social reference management tool. With answers from users all over the world, this study investigates the use of Mendeley, if the respondents use other social media and if all of this affects scientific communication. The aim is also to study what the respondents think about the future of scientific communication and if this can be related to current tendencies. The theoretic framework for this study is based on Leah Lievrouws research on the Cycle of Scientific Communication and the relationship between the ”Little Science 2.0”-scenario and the ”Big Science Retrench- ment”-scenario. A qualitative web based survey was conducted (41 answers) and complemented with an interview with a professor in environmental sciences. The main purpose with the interview was to study how Mendeley can be used in collaborations. The results show that Mendeley is used by researchers to store and organize references, read and annotate pdf:s, cite, share articles in groups, search for new references and to present their research and make new ac- quaintances. The answers show that one effect that Mendeley and other social media has on scientific communi- cation is facilitating cooperation across traditional divides. At the same time, some respondents have not seen an effect on their scientific communication yet. Methods to measure impact in social media are requested, which would complement standard citation analysis. Mendeley’s related research function is found valuable in theory, but is in need of significant improvements. The respondents think that the future will be characterized by an increase in openness and sharing, but a tendency to keep scientific results copyrighted and locked behind pay- walls is also present. This is a two years master’s thesis in Library and Information science.

Les étudiants gradués et les professeurs (les chercheurs, en général), accèdent, passent en revue et utilisent régulièrement un grand nombre d’articles, cependant aucun des outils et solutions existants ne fournit la vaste gamme de fonctionnalités exigées pour gérer correctement ces ressources. En effet, les systèmes de gestion de bibliographie gèrent les références et les citations, mais ne parviennent pas à aider les chercheurs à manipuler et à localiser des ressources. D'autre part, les systèmes de recommandation d’articles de recherche et les moteurs de recherche spécialisés aident les chercheurs à localiser de nouvelles ressources, mais là encore échouent dans l’aide à les gérer. Finalement, les systèmes de gestion de contenu d'entreprise offrent les fonctionnalités de gestion de documents et des connaissances, mais ne sont pas conçus pour les articles de recherche. Dans ce mémoire, nous présentons une nouvelle classe de systèmes de gestion : système de gestion et de recommandation d’articles de recherche. Papyres (Naak, Hage, & Aïmeur, 2008, 2009) est un prototype qui l’illustre. Il combine des fonctionnalités de bibliographie avec des techniques de recommandation d’articles et des outils de gestion de contenu, afin de fournir un ensemble de fonctionnalités pour localiser les articles de recherche, manipuler et maintenir les bibliographies. De plus, il permet de gérer et partager les connaissances relatives à la littérature. La technique de recommandation utilisée dans Papyres est originale. Sa particularité réside dans l'aspect multicritère introduit dans le processus de filtrage collaboratif, permettant ainsi aux chercheurs d'indiquer leur intérêt pour des parties spécifiques des articles. De plus, nous proposons de tester et de comparer plusieurs approches afin de déterminer le voisinage dans le processus de Filtrage Collaboratif Multicritère, de telle sorte à accroître la précision de la recommandation. Additionally, we propose a novel research paper recommendation technique, used within Papyres. Its uniqueness lies in the multicriteria aspect introduced in the process of collaborative filtering, allowing researchers to indicate their interest in specific parts of articles. Moreover, we suggest test and compare several approaches to determine the neighbourhood in the Multicriteria Collaborative Filtering process, such as to increase the accuracy of the recommendation. Finally, we report on the implementation and validation of Papyres.
