Vocal solos in English for use in the Protestant Church

Jente, Katherine E. January 1956 (has links)
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University / Statement of Problem The purpose of this thesis is to find, list and give a short description of vocal solos with English texts which will contribute to the meaning of the Protestant service. These solos must be 1) worshipful, 2) well-written, and 3) by first-rank composers. A worshipful text adds to the beauty, meaning and knowledge of the Christian philosophy. A good text is directly related to the service of which it is a part. Many arias from sacred oratorios are not good church solos because the texts pertain to the dramatic story of the oratorio rather than to the meaning of a religious service. [TRUNCATED]

'There can be no difference in faith among certain men but rather a difference in words' : Mendelssohn's Kunstreligion as a set of beliefs and an aesthetic language

Koch, Sabine January 2014 (has links)
This dissertation explores the influence that nineteenth-century tenets of Kunstreligion exerted on Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy's aesthetic thought. Widely defined as the merging of religious and aesthetic notions in writings about the arts, Kunstreligion has frequently been interpreted as a manifestation of spiritual beliefs and a movement with which Mendelssohn was not affiliated. The aid of this thesis is to challenge these claims, and to establish the rootedness of sacralised conceptions of music in non-religious inspirations and particulars of language use. Placing Mendelssohn's fascination with church worship, religious morality as well as the human and the divine in the context of wider philosophies of art and religion, the dissertation explores how the composer availed himself of art-religious vocabulary in his correspondence, examining his use of language both in terms of his own religious upbringing and the intellectual discourse of his age. Mendelssohn's Kunstreligion was very practically oriented. reflecting his belief that music was a religious language of feelings and proclamation, his performance of Bach's St. Matthew Passion and subsequent compositions manifested a concern to serve educative purposes related to historicism as well as religious edification and instruction. An analysis of how he viewed these activities in his correspondence reveals that comparisons of concerts with church sermons were not only meant metaphorically but point to objectives that he hoped to accomplish as a man and an artist. His reflections on attributes oft he 'human' and the 'divine' elsewhere suggest a belief that artists were blessed by God and that superior works of art were either God's creation or deserved to be described as 'divine' in the sense of 'excellent.' As these overlapping religio-aesthetic concepts and meanings indicate, in Mendelssohn's writings, Kunstreligion could be both a form of religion that was associated with Schleiermacher's theology and an eclectic verbal language that was creative, often qualitiative, sometimes irons, and, to that effect, typically Mendelssohnian.

Amidah - תפילת העמידה

Katz, Tyler 01 May 2019 (has links)
Amidah - תפילת העמידה – for soprano voice, clarinet, cello, and piano – is a liturgical work in three movements that uses common Jewish prayers as its text. These three movements focus on specific prayers that can be found in the Amidah, the central portion of a Jewish prayer service. This work uses prayers that can be performed on a Friday evening Shabbat service. The first movement focuses on accompanimental music to the Silent Amidah, a silent prayer. The prelude uses the traditional Jewish melody of the opening prayer of the Amidah, Adonai S’fatai Tiftach (אדני שפתי תפתח), leading directly into the first movement. This movement, while harkening to some Jewish melodies, takes ideas from classical Western harmony. While conveying both a sense of calmness and unease, the movement allows for the listener to silently reflect and meditate while absorbing the music. The second movement, Oseh Shalom (עושה שלום), takes its root in Freylach music, a traditional, fast-paced, upbeat style of Klezmer music. While keeping traditional elements, it also uses contemporary harmony and extensive ornamentation in a joyous, energetic fashion. The third movement, Mi Shebeirach (מי שברך), combines flowing lines, ornamental ancient Hebrew trope cantillation, liturgical elements, Middle-Eastern aspects, and spectral harmonies to create a slow, lamenting prayer for healing, a prayer that cries out in pain and suffering, begging for a restoration of mind, body, and soul. The movement closes in mournful sadness comforted by the presence of the Divine.

Por uma sociologia da produção e reprodução musical do presbiterianismo brasileiro: a tendência gospel e sua influência no culto / For a sociology of the musical production and reproduction of the Brazilian presbyterianism: the tendency gospel and the influence in the cult

No. of bitstreams: 1 Jacqueline Ziroldo.pdf: 1249028 bytes, checksum: 572301a7aba1b26c878d9a5d73c81d54 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2007-03-09 / The Brazilian Presbyterian service has assumed a fixed and peculiar form referring to its liturgical style. The exclusion of more ritualistic elements, as well as the conditions for their insertion, gave a very particular outline to the religious service in Brazil. Its shape can be reduced to two pillars: sermon and music. The music has also been developed in a peculiar manner within the denomination. Nevertheless, from the early 1990s, traditional music has been shaken with the fast-growing and consolidation of the gospel music market. Then, a new format of musical production related to congregational praise emerged in Brazil, which counteracting with the traditional productions due to its emotional and performatic aspect. This new model of congregational praise was totally accepted by young people and new converted ones because it was promoted by the specialized media and the gospel market and was in harmony with current cultural trends, somehow complicating the idea of preserving religious tradition. This fact occurred for many reasons, and among them, we can mention the appeal exerted by the musical market upon Presbyterian youth and the liturgica l role music played in this service, which has always created an atmosphere of religious frustration for some laic subgroups. Therefore, musical production and reproduction of Presbyterian service suffered modifications that can contribute directly to one of the biggest modifications which the Presbyterian service has suffered since its insertion in Brazil. This new model of congregational praise facilitated the rupture with the traditional hymnody, which has ever been weakened long ago. The present study deals with the modifications that occurred in Presbyterian liturgical music production and reproduction and the direct results on the religious service profile, as well as the motives that support those modifications on micro and macro social perspectives.(AU) / O culto presbiteriano brasileiro se cristalizou de forma peculiar em relação ao seu estilo litúrgico.
