[en] MODELING AND SIMULATION OF TRANSPORT AND REMEDIATION OF POLUANTS IN AQUIFERS / [pt] MODELAGEM E SIMULAÇÃO DO TRANSPORTE E REMEDIAÇÃO DE POLUENTES EM AQÜÍFEROSFABIAN MARTIN VIZCARRA CAMPANA 14 May 2015 (has links)
[en] We present in this paper a study of the main mechanisms of the model groundwater flow and transport model of pollutants in aquifers. The processes associated with the transport of pollutants are studied in detail: diffusion, dispersion and retention of contaminants in the aquifer porous matrix. Is then developed with the support of Visual MODFLOW software v.2011.1, two numerical simulations with synthetic data transport and remediation of a pollutant in the saturated zone of an aquifer composed of three layers. The primary goal of numerical simulation of the groundwater flow model and transport of pollutants studied model is to evaluate the theoretical models and provide a methodological guide computer simulations of the dynamics of ground water and the evolution of pollutant plumes sometidas external condiciones; for example: pumping wells, injection wells, infiltration, etc.. The data used in the simulation represents a synthetic aquifer consists of three layers with a fault in the middle of the system, which allows for hydraulically connecting the surface layer represented by a water aquifer, with the layer represented by a confined aquifer. The second goal is to numerically simulate the process of remediation of polluted aquifers, in order to establish the effectiveness of the method. Particularly was chosen remediation method Pump-and-Treat, treatment of the aquifer most systems used for this purpose, which consists of pumping to the surface of the polluted groundwater for further treatment to remove external contaminants.

e policíclicos aromáticos, organoclorados, pesticidas,
dentre outros - tem se
mostrado competitivo quando comparado a outras soluções,
principalmente
aperfeiçoar o sistema de dessorção térmica in situ a
partir do desenvolvimento
temperaturas in
situ.
EMBRAPA Solos, no
Geotecnia e Meio
Ambiente da PUC-Rio. No primeiro caso, por ser um solo
areno-argiloso, a
siltoso, a
projeto original, o
bastonete térmico desenvolvido se comportou bem,
principalmente no último
solo e a possibilidade
de aptidão deste meio à existência de novos seres vivos
após a injeção de água
e nutrientes inorgânicos. Verificou-se uma recuperação e
estabilização destes
indivíduos em aproximadamente 03 semanas. Observou-se
ainda a recuperação
orgânica no solo. / [en] The use of thermal processes in order to remediate
contaminated sites has
been shown a great deal of promise, especially when time
and effectiveness are
considered. The present work describes the development of
a new in situ device
that simultaneously applies heat and delivers compressed
air into the porous
media. Additionally, a new set of instruments were also
designed and built in
order to monitor temperature and to extract vapor from the
vadose zone. Tests
performed at EMBRAPA Solos site and PUC-Rio Campus showed
a good
performance of the pieces of equipment developed. In
addition, microbiological
tests performed at the Geotechnical and Environmental Lab
showed that is
possible to recover the natural microbiota after prolonged
exposure to
temperatures above 400 ºC. Results have shown a recovery
and stabilization of
the population in about 3 weeks. However, it was also
observed that metabolic
activity was not fully recovered, in part due the lack of
nutrients and organic
matter in the porous media.

públicas do nosso planeta.
produzido
eletroquimicamente in situ. O anodo de β-PbO2 foi
empregado
principal.
A partir
da análise cinética
dos resultados obtidos nos experimentos de degradação
foram obtidas boas
correlações lineares quando os dados foram ajustados
seguindo um modelo de
pseudo-primeira ordem. As constantes cinéticas de pseudo-
primeira ordem calculadas foram 6,2×10(−3), 8,8×10(−3) e
1,21×10(−2) min (−1) para 0,5, 1 e 1,5 kA m(−2),
respectivamente.
0,6 A, respectivamente. Estes resultados
[en] The impact of pesticides on the quality of groundwater has
been the
subject of scientific and public health concerns in the
entire planet, especially in
areas where groundwater is mainly used for human
consumption. The intensive
use of pesticides in agriculture and the high persistence
of several of these
chemicals have required a rigorous control of possible
environmental
contaminations, especially of drinking water sources. The
herbicide atrazine is
frequently detected in natural waters of many countries and
was selected for
investigation. A laboratory scale study on the evaluation
of the effectiveness of
remediation of atrazine in groundwater utilizing in situ
electrochemical
generated ozone was conducted. β-PbO2 was used as anode for
ozone
generation. β-PbO2 electrodes were prepared by
electrodeposition on Ti plates.
X-ray diffraction analysis confirmed that the deposit
contained only the α and β
PbO2 with the β phase prevailing. The electrochemical ozone
production
increases with incrementing the current density. The rate
of ozone production
during the electrolysis was 4.4, 19.5 and 39.1 mg h-1 for
current densities of 0.5,
1.0 and 1.50 kAm(-2), respectively. In the experiments of
atrazine degradation by
electrochemically generated ozone a difference in atrazine
degradation was
found when the applied current density was varied. The
results evidenced that
the atrazine degradation rates increased with augmenting
the current density.
This is indicative of a greater oxidation ability of the
anode with increasing the
current applied due to the production of more
electrogenerated active oxidant
(O3/.OH). The kinetic analysis of the above results related
to different reaction
orders gave good linear correlations when the data was
fitted with a pseudo
first-order reaction rate equation. The pseudo first-order
rate constants obtained
were 6.2×10(−3), 8.8×10(−3), and 1.21×10(−2) min(−1) for
0.5, 0.1, and 1.5 kA m(−2),
respectively. The acrylic column (26 cm x 4 cm ID) used in
flow degradation
experiments was packed with clean sand and contained a
single set of electrodes.
Two expanded titanium mesh coated with β-PbO2 and RuO2
served as anode and
cathode, respectively. During the experiments the atrazine
effluent concentration
progressively diminished. After 8 hours of electrolysis the
effluent atrazine
concentration was reduced by 75% and 80% applying current
densities of 0.4
and 0.6, respectively. These results confirm the potential
applicability of this
type of groundwater plume control strategy. The study
constitutes a foundation
to the future developing of this aquifer remediation
technique.

[en] USE OF REACTIVE BARRIERS FOR REMEDIATION OF GROUNDWATER CONTAMINATION / [es] USO DE BARRERAS REACTIVAS EN EL TRATAMIENTO DE AQUÍFEROS CONTAMINADOS / [pt] USO DE BARREIRAS REATIVAS NA REMEDIAÇÃO DE AQUÍFEROS CONTAMINADOSALEXANDRE DUARTE GUSMAO 29 August 2001 (has links)
eficácia quanto à remediação a longo prazo, especialmente
promissoras é o tratamento in situ dos contaminantes
a
[en] Underground contamination with hazardous wastes has been
one of the largest environmental problems in several
countries, with many sites presenting groundwater
contamination. There are several technologies to control
and remediate groundwater contamination and the technology
more commonly used is the so called pump-and-treat. In
spite of the potential for its use in the control of the
migration of a plume, pump-and-treat possesses several
physical and chemical restrictions that limit its
effectiveness as a strategy of aquifer decontamination on
long duration remediation works, especially if used
isolated or when the aquifer is contaminated with NAPLs
(Non Aqueous Phase Liquids). Additional and associated
techniques to the control system of the plume migration are
often recommended according the slow process of natural
dissolution of these liquids in groundwater. Because these
limitations, several technologies are being investigated.
One of the most promising is the in situ treatment of the
contaminant in reactive barriers, especially in aquifers
contaminated with chlorinated aliphatic organic compounds
(chlorinated solvents). The design involves the
construction of a barrier with reactive and porous
materials (reactors) that are placed in the aquifer to
intercept the contaminant plume. As water passively flows
through the reactor, the contaminants are degraded,
therefore minimising or avoiding the aquifer contamination
downstream the barrier. The degradation process involves
the reductive dechlorination of the compounds in the
presence of zero-valent metals (e.g. metallic iron).
The general objective of this research is to make an
evaluation of the use of reactive barriers in the
emediation of aquifers that are contaminated with
chlorinated solvents, and is emphasised its applicability
and limitations. The specific objective of the research is
to show that the treatment of aquifers should be made of
sequential way, that is, it should involve different
technologies of remediation according to the
characteristics of the contaminants and their by-products.
Several permeability and mass transport experiments were
made for determination of the hydraulic conductivity and
the parameters of mass transport in different mixtures of
powder of iron and quartz. Batch and column tests were also
made with different contaminants in the presence of iron
powder and the results allow evaluating the degradation
rates of these compounds and their by-products. The
conclusion is that the reductive dechlorination with
metallic iron can have different results depending on the
type of contaminant. Some contaminants can not present any
degradation or they have so high half-life times that the
use of this technology in reactive barrier design is out of
practice. Finally the formation of chlorinated by-products,
which are more toxic than the own original contaminant and
not degraded by the same technology, emphasises that the
treatment of aquifers should be sequential.
agua (NAPLs - Non Aqueos Phase Liquids).
sucesivamente, o sea, debe envolver diferentes tecnologías

[pt] O presente trabalho avaliou a eficácia da dessorção térmica
in situ em remediar materiais contaminados por
hidrocarbonetos de petróleo em refinarias. Paralelamente,
O sistema
desenvolvido no presente trabalho apresentou um
desempenho satisfatório. Verificou-se a necessidade de
aeração do material remediado para eliminar a produção de
coque.
[en] This dissertation assessed the adequacy of in situ thermal
desorption (istd)
in cleaning oil contaminated debris from Refineries. A new
modulated istd system
was designed and built in order to remediate oiled cobbles
under pipeways.
The experimental results revealed the possibility of
cleaning concrete
pavements contaminated by heavy oil. The thermal desorption
process restored
their original color but reduced their resistance up to
65 percent. It was observed that
the resulting debris, after mineralogical analyses by X-ray
diffraction and
chemical analysis by X-Ray fluorescence, have a similar
composition to the soil
employed in the fills throughout the Refinery, indicating
that the debris could well
have been transported by the wind.
The system devised here had a satisfactory performance. It
was observed
the necessity of aeration during the treatment in order to
avoid the production of
coke. Additionally, it was also observed the importance of
a good thermal
insulation in order to minimize power consumption and the
propagation of heat
and gas emissions to the atmosphere.
The gases emissions consisted mainly of olefins and
paraffins that had
been reasonably been treated by the thermal oxidizer
devised herein.

[en] EVALUATION OF THE ENCAPSULATION POTENTIAL OF A CONTAMINATED SOIL WITH ZINC CHLORIDE THROUGH THE LIME AND CEMENT ADDITION / [pt] AVALIAÇÃO DO POTENCIAL DE ENCAPSULAMENTO DE UM SOLO CONTAMINADO COM CLORETO DE ZINCO ATRAVÉS DA ADIÇÃO DE CAL E CIMENTOISABEL AMADO PEREZ 11 September 2017 (has links)
[en] Along with the industrial development in Brazil, several environmental problems arose, such as greenhouse gas emissions, pollution of water systems, soil contamination caused by improper disposal of waste, among others. Because of that, contaminated areas soared and consequently the need for the development of remediation studies of contaminated areas emerged. This study aimed to analyze the behavior of a zinc chloride contaminated soil when subjected to the encapsulation technique. This procedure consists of inserting an encapsulating agent to react with the contaminated soil, solidifying and chemically stabilizing
the contaminant. The cementing agents used in this research were hydrated lime and Portland cement (CP V – ARI). Different mixtures of clay soil, zinc chloride (in contents of 5 and 10 percent) and those agents (lime and cement, in contents of 5 and 10 percent) were studied in several curing times. Geotechnical characterization tests, compaction tests, unconfined compressive strength tests and leaching tests
(adapted from a permeameter) were performed as well as the leachate and samples chemical analysis to ensure the efficiency of the encapsulation technique. Tomography and Scanning Electron Microscopy were also realized to analyse the the behavior and structure of the samples. Research results were satisfactory,
since there was a significant reduction of leachate toxicity when the sample had higher contents of encapsulant, preventing the contaminant to pollute water resources. Moreover, it was also possible to realize, from the unconfined compressive strength test, that the curing time and the contaminant and
encapsulant agents concentration influences in the contaminated soil strength. Therefore, those choices are crucial for the efficiency of this type of remediation.

Fazem parte do
sistema, como
equipamentos acessórios, controladores de temperatura do
tipo rampa
patamar, isolantes térmicos de fibra cerâmica, membranas
plásticas e
amostradores de água e de gases. Estes últimos são
utilizados para averiguar
a eficiência do oxidador térmico. O sistema desenvolvido
atingiu aos objetivos
de projeto. O bastonete térmico foi capaz de aplicar
temperaturas de até 600 ºC
seguindo trajetórias de temperatura programadas. O mesmo
pode-se afirmar
do sistema de tratamento das emissões gasosas. O programa
experimental
O programa
expôs a importância
coque. As determinações analíticas revelaram que as
emissões gasosas
resultantes do aquecimento do solo residual contaminado
com óleo queimado
tratam-se de parafinas de olefinas. A duração do ensaio
sistema in situ de
[en] This dissertation refers to the development of an in situ
system devised to
remediate soils contaminated with organic compounds. The
system consists
basically of a thermal probe capable of heating the soil
matrix through radial
flow and a thermal oxidizer that treats the resulting
gases emissions. The
system clearly reached the design aims. The thermal probe
consistently
programed temperatures up to 6000C to the soil matrix
following applied thermal
paths. The thermal oxidizer was capable to heat gases
emissions up to 9000C
under prolonged exposure. The experimental program was
carried out using a
residual soil from gnaiss taken from a slope at Washington
Luiz Roadway. This
soil was contaminated with used oil and submitted to a
series of tests in order to
assess the efficiency of the system developed herein. The
results suggest that
thermal desorption was able to reduce the degree of
contamination to levels
well below the limits established by National and
International Environmental
Agencies. The results also revealed the importance of
aeration during the
process to avoid the formation of coke. Fingerprinting
tests carried out on gases
emissions revealed that they were composed mainly by
olefins and paraffins.

[en] DIGITAL LITERATURE: THEORETICAL AND AESTHETIC REFLECTIONS / [pt] LITERATURA DIGITAL: DESAFIOS TEÓRICOS E ESTETICOSLUCIANA BARROSO GATTASS 04 June 2019 (has links)
análise estética do fenômeno digital – interatividade, intermidialidade e
[en] The emergence of a new phenomenon – digital literature – within the field of
literary studies calls for the reorganization and creation of new theoretical and
analytical repertoires. Since digital literature partakes of literary tradition as well
as introduces critical medial and conceptual innovations that challenge the very
concept of literary frontiers and spaces, its scholarly analysis demands significant
reformulations in literary studies. As models of communication change, so do the
reception and production processes accompanying these changes. Within these
altered scenarios, the thesis Digital Literature: Theoretical and Aesthetic
Reflections is a response to the aesthetic and theoretical challenges brought on by
computer-based literature. As a methodological strategy, the thesis articulates
recent trends in the theory of digital aesthetics – remediation (BOLTER),
eventilization (HAYLES), correlations of performativity, intermediality and
interactivity with meaning-driven analysis (SIMANOWSKI), Medienumbrüche
(GENDOLLA and SCHÄFER) – with theories of production of presence
(GUMBRECHT), autopoietic communicative models (LUHMANN) and closereadings
of digital works. By scripting a dialogue with key theorists from print
literary theory as well as new media theorists and artists in the burgeoning field,
the thesis offers conceptual and theoretical contributions to the formulation of a
poetics of new media.

[en] This work focues on the development of a heterostructure composed by two semiconductors, capable to decrease the electron/hole recombination rate through a robust charge separation, and at the same time, this nanohybrid is sensitive to visible light spectrum. The charge separation is achieved by the injection of free electrons within the conduction band (BC) of TiO2 in anatase form, which come from the highest-occupied-molecular-orbital (HOMO) of acetylacetone (Acac), linked to the anatase nanoparticles, followed by the injection into unoccupied Fe3+ d-orbital within band-gap energy of the ferrititanate nanosheets. Additionally, the absorption of visible light could be assured by ferrititanate nanosheets, considering the interaction of the energy levels of Fe3+ with visible light and the valence and conduction bands, as well as, the formation of the charge transfer complex (CTC), between the anatase nanoparticles and Acac. The mesoporous nanohybrids (called also as heterostructures) were produced by different routes of junction of two components: i) ferrititanate nanosheets, which were synthesized from ilmenite mineral sands, and then they were exfoliated into single layers and ii) TiO2 nanoparticles, modified with Acac, which formed the CTC. The characterization techniques, such as N2 adsorption-desorption, photoluminescence emission spectroscopy (PL) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), and so on, confirmed the formation of the mesoporous heterostructures sensitive to visible light and with a robust mechanism of charge separation. The photodegradation of NO pollutant gas within the visible light spectrum through several mesoporous nanohybrids (photocatalysts) demonstrated being well succeeded, exhibiting an efficiency more than seven times higher than the activity benchmark TiO2 (Degussa P-25) photocatalyst.

[en] This dissertation presents the results obtained in the remediation process

Chromium is an important metal for the industry and is used in various
products and processes, such as electroplating, leather treatment, pulp, wood
preservation, and refractory manufacturing. The trivalent chromium is essential
from a nutritional point of view, non-toxic and poorly absorbed in the body,
acting in the maintenance of some functions. Cr(III) is the most common being
found and occurs naturally, since the element Cr(VI) can occur naturally, but in
low concentrations, if the groundwater has geochemical conditions the Cr (III)
can be oxidize to Cr (VI). The hexavalent chromium is the most dangerous
valence state and, according to ATSDR (two thousand and twelve), have greater mobility in the
groundwater, being carcinogenic by inhalation of high doses of soluble
chromate salts. The mobility of hexavalent chromium is high in soil and
groundwater because it is not adsorbed by the soil in that valence state, on the
other hand when it is in trivalent form is strongly adsorbed by the soil, forming
insoluble precipitates, having low mobility in soil and groundwater.
The hexavalent chromium remediation by in situ chemical reduction
using calcium polysulfide has been the subject of several field studies
documented in the literature, both for soil and groundwater from the Chromite
Ore Processing Residue (COPR) (Storch, et al., two thousand and two; Graham, et al., two thousand and six ;
Charboneau, et al., two thousand and six ; Wazne, et al., two thousand seven a; Wazne, et al., two thousand seven b;
Chrysochoou, et al., two thousand and ten ; Chrysochoou & Ting, two thousand and eleven ; Pakzadeh & Batista,
two thousand and eleven ; Chrysochoou, et al., two thousand and twelve ).
Calcium polysulfide is a fertilizer to soil and commercially available and
has been used in some remediation studies cases for reducing hexavalent
chromium in soil and groundwater. Being commercially available and used as
fertilizer, it is a relatively cheap chemical reagent in comparison with other
chemical compounds exclusively developed for this purpose.
The stoichiometric demand and the chemical kinetics of the reduction of
Cr (VI) by the calcium polysulfide in aqueous solution was studied by Graham
et al. (two thousand and six) from the chromite ore processing residue (COPR). With this study
it was reported that a molar ratio of a point sixty-six is required (close to the theoretical
value of one point five) and a first-order kinetics with an initial concentration of twenty-six eight point
mg/L and pH of the CPS solution around eleven point five, with the presence of oxygen.
Thus, the hexavalent chromium is reduced to chromium hydroxide, slightly
water soluble compound which is precipitated to the soil. The trivalent
chromium has low solubility, toxicity, mobility, reactivity and is considered
stable.
There are various application techniques of chemical reagents in the
underground environment, and choosing the most appropriate method for each
area depends on the type of contaminant, geological environment, groundwater
and surface interference, depth, thickness and size of the contaminated area. As
described by Suthersan (mil novecentos ninety-six), the injection of chemical reagents has to
achieve two objectives: (one) creating and maintaining an ideal redox
environment and other parameters such as pH, presence or absence of
dissolved oxygen, etc.; and (two) the delivery and distribution of the necessary
reagents for a homogeneous way throughout the injection area, both
horizontally and vertically. Thus, it is essential that the conceptual model of the
study area is very detailed, so there is no doubt in the choice of chemical
reagent application methodology.
Although there are numerous laboratory studies on hexavalent chromium
remediation using calcium polysulfide, there are few reports in the literature on
the field application, especially case studies in Brazil, therefore, this case study
becomes a demonstration applying calcium polysulfide as a remediation
technique for hexavalent chrome, with geochemical data, which are important
for monitoring chemical reduction. This case study shows the effectiveness,
dosage and concentration of the study area, and may apply to other hexavalent
chromium remediation projects.
Materials and Methods
A former glass factory (the Site ) operated in the North Zone of Rio de
Janeiro / RJ, Brazil from the mid-thousand nine hundred and fifty s to two thousand and five. A portion of the facility was
used to store raw material to produce glass, including arsenic oxide, and
another portion of the Site was used to conduct industrial plating using
hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in the glass molds. In two thousand and nine, the Site was
purchased for mixed use redevelopment, demanding an environmental
assessment and subsequent remediation.
Between two thousand and nine and two thousand and twelve several phases of site investigation was
conducted. The results of the investigation indicated that Cr(VI) was present in
soil at concentrations up to approximately twenty one mg/kg and in groundwater at
concentrations up to approximately thirty mg/L. These concentrations exceeded
regulatory criteria of three hundred mg/Kg for soil and zero point zero five mg/L for groundwater. A
phased remedial approach was developed consisting of the following: (a)
excavation and off-site disposal of two and four hundred ton of Cr(VI) impacted soil from the
source area, performed in the unsaturated and saturated zone soils in the Cr(VI)
source area; (b) post-excavation monitoring of the groundwater conditions; and
(c) groundwater treatment following the excavation program. Hexavalent
chromium concentrations in groundwater decreased significantly following the
excavation, however, additional reduction of concentrations of Cr(VI)
contaminant in groundwater was required.
Then was designed and implemented a set of bench-scale treatability
tests in order to evaluate groundwater remediation alternatives. Several
proprietary and non-proprietary reductants for co-treatment of Cr(VI) were
evaluated. Calcium polysulfide were selected to treat Cr(VI).
To reduce residual Cr(VI) concentrations in the groundwater plume
located downgradient of the former excavated source area, dois e seven hundred cubic meters
were targeted for active treatment. The groundwater remediation approach
consisted of the injection of thirty liters of CPS (twenty nine percent) diluted in two hundred and twenty
liters of water, yielding a total of two hundred and fifty liters of solution injected using direct
push technology into seventy two locations.
Groundwater Monitoring
As part of chemical reagent injection stage was performed the baseline
monitoring with collection of soil and groundwater samples. The soil sampling
was performed by direct push technique using PVC liner with two inches in
diameter, to analyze the total and hexavalent chromium concentrations.
Six months after the injection were installed sixteen monitoring wells, eight
shallow wells (five meters) and eight deep wells (nine meters) spread upstream, side,
middle and downstream of the injection area.
Groundwater geochemical parameters (i.e., temperature, total solids
dissolved, specific conductance, pH, oxidation-reduction potential, and
temperature) were measured at the time groundwater samples were collected.
Groundwater samples were collected and analyzed for total and dissolved
chromium, hexavalent chromium, iron, arsenic, manganese, calcium, sulfate,
and sulfide. Samples were field-filtered with disposable zero point forty-five μm polyethylene
filter capsules prior to collecting samples for dissolved metals.
Results and Discussion
Dose calculations for the reduction of hexavalent chromium have been
performed with the data obtained in the bench-scale treatability test and
resulted in a stoichiometric demand of four mlCPS/kg soil to the treatment of the
study area. Therefore thirty liters of solution was used containing twenty-nine percent
calcium polysulfide and approximately two hundred and twenty two liters to perform their mixture,
totaling two hundred and fifty-two thousand and thirty liters of solution.
For solution injection were performed seventy two soil borings with eight point five meters
deep, and the product was injected range between two point five and eightpoint five meters. The
depth of injection was from two point five mbgl covered any change in water level due to
seasonal variation.
In each soil boring was injected chemical reagent solution comprised four hundred and seventeen
liters of calcium polysulfide diluted in tree and eighty-three liters of water for a total volume
of tree and a half liters of solution injected per point.
The comparative analysis results of the third monitoring campaign ( eighteen
months post-injection) with the baseline campaign (september/two thousand and twelve) indicated
reduction of hexavalent chromium concentrations between forty-six point sixty-seven and ninety-nine and ninety-five percent.
Regarding the second monitoring campaign (twelve months post-injection),
the hexavalent chromium concentrations reduced between twenty-three point ninety-nine and ninety nine point seventy-nine percent in
five of the fifteen monitoring wells that were sampled. In three of the fifteen
monitoring wells the hexavalent chromium concentrations remained below the
quantitation limit used by the analytical laboratory method. There was no
increase in hexavalent chromium concentration, compared the results of the
third and second monitoring campaign.
The evaluation of the Eh and pH values measured in the monitoring
campaigns showed that the pH value was in the acidic range (about four ) and after
removal of contaminated soil with hexavalent chromium pH raised to between
five and six, after the chemical reagent injection pH increased to the basic range
(above seven point five). In the second and third campaign the pH reduced to acid range
(below six point five), which can be regarded as the pH value of the area background.
The Eh has inversely proportional behavior, increasing between the first and
third campaign, and in the third campaign the measured values are in the
ranges considered as moderately reducing (hundred to four hundred mV) and oxidizer (> four hundred
mV).
The pH variation also showed a relationship between increased
concentrations of calcium, iron, manganese and sulfate (in some monitoring
wells). There were also reductions in hexavalent chromium concentrations in
monitoring wells.
Conclusion
This case study indicates that the use of different remediation techniques
when applied together (excavation and chemical reduction), reducing the time
required for remediation of a contaminated site without impacting the final cost
of remediation. The chemical reduction of hexavalent chromium using calcium
polysulfide was effective to reduce the concentration to less than the
quantification limit of the analytical method used.
Therefore, as presented it is necessary to carry out several studies to
detail the hexavalent chromium concentration in the site, as well as understand
the geochemistry of groundwater and performing bench-scale tests to evaluate
the effectiveness of the chemical reagent in the site study hydrogeological
environment and calculate the required dose.
The treatability test with calcium polysulfide demonstrated the feasibility
of using this chemical reagent by In Situ Chemical Reduction (ISCR) to reduce
the hexavalent chrome concentration in soil and groundwater. The test resulted
in a stoichiometric demand of four mlCPS /kg soil to the treatment of the study
area.
Soil samples collected six months after injection showed that the calcium
polysulfide could desorb hexavalent chromium from the soil, since,
contaminant concentrations were not detected in the samples.
neteen months after the injection of the chemical reagent the groundwater
concentrations of hexavalent chromium reduced from forty-six point sixty-seven to ninety-nine and ninety-five percent in
relation to baseline campaign. And, of the fifteen monitoring wells in just three
wells hexavalent chromium concentrations were detected.
This demonstrates the effectiveness of using calcium polysulfide to
remediate hexavalent chromium in soil and groundwater, confirming the
studies by Storch et al. (two thousand and two), Graham et al (two thousand and six), Charboneau et al. ( two thousand and six),
Wazne et al. (two thousand and seven a), Wazne et al. (two thousand and seven b), Chrysochoou et al. (two thousand and ten),
Chrysochoou & Ting (two thousand and eleven), Pakzadeh & Batista (two thousand and eleven), Chrysochoou et al
(2012) in several areas in United States and Europe.
