Road accident analysis in Yemen : the identification of shortcomings in road accident data, data adjustment, cost and development of road fatality model

Naji, Jamil Abdul-Rabb January 1996 (has links)
The true extent of the road accident problem in Yemen is questionable. Some agencies and citizens believe that the safety situation in Yemen is very critical while others disagree with this belief. Both sides however, agree that the road accident problem in Yemen is such that it requires considerable attention. Since Yemen has no history in road safety research and since there is no reliable road accident data in the country, making final judgements on the situation is difficult unless supported by adequate research. The aim of the present research is to provide a better understanding of the road accident problem in the Yemen. This can be made by investigation of the real dimensions of the road accident problem. This includes the identification of the shortcomings in road accident data, the cost of road accidents and modelling road accident fatalities.

Africa through British eyes : the changing representation of the D.R. Congo in the London Times, 1885-2006

Djongana, Faustin Chongombe January 2012 (has links)
This thesis seeks to respond to the on-going complaints from both African and western scholars that Africa is negatively represented in the western media. The findings showed that news stories, opinions and commentaries expressed throughout the coverage of the Congo, including editorials and letters and from pre-colonial to modern Congo, were written by western journalists and correspondents from the London Times and associated correspondents, while four other news agencies Agence France Press (AFP), Associated Press (AP), the Belgian news agency (Belga) and Reuters were the main sources for The Times newspaper. News makers in Pre-Colonial and Colonial periods were almost exclusively westerners and references to the Congolese people appeared in generic terms. In Post-Colonial and Modern periods, Congolese people did appear by name but only in a limited capacity. The thesis also identifies differences between the coverage in each period, for example highlighting the critical engagement with the Congo that characterised the reporting of 1908. The Congo was represented over the periods sampled with negative stereotypes such a 'primitive', 'backward', 'barbaric, 'dangerous destination,' 'place for business,' 'natives to be civilised, evangelised and educated.' Recurring themes such as forced labour, civil war, corruption, child exploitation, poverty, refugees, witchcraft, dependency and mismanagement prevail in the reporting. The research investigated the changing representations of the Democratic Republic of Congo in the western media by examining its coverage in the London Times from a historical context that included four key historic years in the Congo's development, namely 1885, 1908, 1960 and 2006, referred to as the Pre-Colonial, Colonial, Post-Colonial and Modern Congo periods. The London Times, which used to be one of the leading western newspapers and the British newspaper of record, was selected. Content and discourse analysis were used to evaluate and categorise the news items published in the sampled periods to distinguish the emerging themes, to identify the sources, and to interpret the language used in the coverage. The findings have shown that since its inception to the modern period, the reporting of the Congo in The Times has avowedly been through western eyes, and, as with much journalism, has not offered any real context to the stories. The poor benighted heathens thus continue in their war-torn arbours.

Une affinité paradoxale : Epicurisme et augustinisme dans la pensée de Pierre Bayle / A paradoxical affinity : Epicureanism and augustinismin Pierre Bayle's thought

Argaud, Élodie 19 June 2015 (has links)
In Bayle's works we find a number of critical judgements based on unexpected comparisons : he portrays Pascal as a new Epicurus, for instance; he classes Malebranche's Augustinian morals as an Epicurean ethic. These comments have often been interpreted as polemical arguments without foundation in more profound phjlosophical thought. However Bayle himself proposes a theory of the art of establishing such paradoxical connections, which he regards as an act of interpretation : he describes himself as a "Small writer", whose work consists in interpreting texts by finding relevant contexts which bring out their deeper meaning: thjs is what he calls « to make fine applications». ln this thesis we suggest thal the paradoxical affinity defined by Bayle between Epicureanism and Augustinianism should be taken seriously : it can indeed inforrn us about Bayle's own thought and about his interpretation of olher aulhors. This affinity is based on the concept of pleasure which is, according to Bayle, at the heart of Augustinean and Epicurean anthropologies. From this affinity, Bayle then draws moral, theological, spiritual, political and epistemological consequences. He rewrites, as it were, a debate between Augustin and Epicurus, a debate which, to his mind, had never been properly conducted. His conclusion is thal Epicureanism is better « proportioned » to human nature as it is than Augustinianism.

Petrology and geochemistry of some high pressure rocks from northern part of Rio San Juan complex, Dominican Republic

Anam, Khandaker I. 12 November 1993 (has links)
The Rio San Juan Complex is an important occurrence of high pressure/low temperature rocks in the circum-Caribbean region which contains both coherent blueschist units and two varieties of melange in the same area. The melanges contain a diverse assemblage of blocks of various sizes, different degrees of metamorphism, and mineral assemblages. Some high pressure blocks show two stages of metamorphism. The earliest stage is characterized by high pressure-low temperature conditions and the second stage is characterized by high pressure-lower temperature conditions. The geochemistry of thirteen samples from the Rio San Juan Complex has been studied and data have been compared with rocks of adjacent regions. Geochemical evidence indicates that rocks from the Rio San Juan Complex have predominant calc-alkaline affinities with subordinate tholeiitic affinities. This suggests that they have a multiple tectonic provenance.

An interdisciplinary approach to agriculture in central and southern Italy 202-103 BC

Hoyer, Daniel 11 1900 (has links)
This paper looks at the agrarian economy of Italy in the middle Republican period, specifically between 202 and 103 BC. I am concerned primarily with how land was utilized and by whom it was exploited during this pivotal time, and with the interaction between rural and urbans pace in the Italian economy. Scholarship on Roman agriculture has largely been, unfortunately, polarized between 'historians' and 'archaeologists,' between a slave-production, latifundia model on the one hand and a focus on micro-regional variation on the other. This staunch division is quite frustrating, as there has been far too little dialogue between the two sides and since the schism works to the detriment of both, for each discipline can, I believe, inform the other to give a more complete picture of ancient life than either one in isolation. It is my intention with this paper, then, to bring an interdisciplinary approach to the study of Roman agriculture, to discover whether any union can be made between these two conflicting models of land use in the second century BC. My research is concentrated on a few areas of south-central Italy, namely south Etruria, especially the ager Cosanus, Pompeii, and parts of the Biferno Valley, as these areas are the richest in terms of available evidence, including the literary, epigraphic, and archaeological sources, and I believe offer the most intriguing possibilities for analysis. Using all of these tools I explore the labour used in agricultural production in these areas, the function of urban space and the preponderance of trade and exchange, and, lastly, look at the inter-regional situation trying to discern whether any 'global' agricultural program for Roman Italy emerges. / Arts, Faculty of / Classical, Near Eastern and Religious Studies, Department of / Graduate
