Förändring av pappersegenskaper vid lagring under dragspänning

Sammanfattning I en pappersrulle är de yttre lagren utsatta för dragspänning. Om det finns variationer i rullens diameter i form av valkar finns det risk för att papperet förlängs irreversibelt i dessa positioner och orsaka slappa stråk. Den deformation som uppstår vid långvarig belastning av papper kallas krypning. Uppgiften i detta arbete var, att på lab., simulera valkar genom att utsätta pappersremsor för konstant dragspänning av olika storlekar. En av frågeställningarna var om egenskapsförändringar kan påvisas när papper utsätts för konstant inspänningskraft under en längre tid. De parametrar som undersökts var töjning, kryphastighet och relaxation, även mätningar på papperets mekaniska egenskaper dragstyrka, brottöjning och dragstyvhet har utförts i detta arbete. De papperskvalitéer som undersöktes var 71g/m2 MG-papper, 80g/m2 optisk liner och 135g/m2 liner. Inspänningskraften som papperet utsattes för motsvarade 10 %, 30 % och 50 % av dragstyrkan hos varje kvalité. Provremsor belastades under ett, fyra och sju dygn, för att sedan relaxeras. Resultaten visar att dragstyrkan och dragstyvheten inte påverkas av att papperet varit utsatt för en inspänningskraft. Däremot blev brottöjningen mindre ju större den irreversibla förlängningen hos papperet var. Samtliga papperskvalitéer relaxerar tillbaka till ursprungslängd efter fyra dygn när belastningen var 10 %. Om belastningen däremot var 30 % och 50 % uppstod en irreversibel förlängning redan efter ett dygn. Vid belastning under sju dygn uppstod permanent förlängning hos samtliga kvalitéer och belastningar utom MG-papper 10 % som relaxerade till ursprungslängd. MG-papper är därmed den papperskvalité som står emot krypning bäst och är på så sätt minst känslig för valkar i pappersrullen. En högre belastning ger en högre kryphastighet och större irreversibel förlängning. För att undvika uppkomsten av slappa stråk bör därför banspänningen som används vid upprullningen av papperet inte vara större än 10 % av dragstyrkan hos papperskvalitén. Hur länge papperet är belastat påverkar också den slutliga irreversibla förlängningen. Det innebär att lagring ökar risken för att slappa stråk kommer att uppstå i efterbearbetningen. / Abstract In a paper roll the outer layers are under tensile stress. If there are variations in the roll diameter there is a risk that the thicker parts of the roll will make the paper elongate more in these regions, because they will be under a higher tensile stress. This may cause baggy webs. The deformation that occurs during a long time under tensile stress is called creep. Experiments have been performed with strips of paper that have been exposed to a constant load and constant climate (50 % RH, 23°C). The properties that have been examined are creep strain, creep rate and relaxation after creep. Studies of tensile strength, tensile stiffness and strain at break have also been made. The paper qualities that have been examined were 71g/m2 MG-paper, 80g/m2 liner and 135g/m2 liner. The paper qualities in this study are exposed to loads that correspond to 10 %, 30 % and 50 % of their tensile strength. The paper strips were under load during 24h, four and seven days. The results in these studies show that tensile strength and tensile stiffness remains the same after the paper has been exposed to a constant load. The strain at break, on the other hand, decreases with increasing irreversible elongation of the paper strips. All paper qualities recover to the initial length after four days under a load of 10 % of the tensile strength. If the load corresponds to 30 % or 50 % of the tensile strength a permanent elongation arose as early as after 24h. After seven days, only the MG-paper recovered to the initial length if the load corresponded to 10 % of the tensile strength. This means that MG-paper is more resistant to creep then the liner qualities. Consequently, MG-paper is the paper quality that is least sensitive to ridges. A higher load gives a higher creep rate and larger irreversible elongation of the paper. To avoid baggy webs to arise, the load should not exceed 10 % of the paper’s tensile strength when winding the paper roll. The time under which the paper is under load also influence the final irreversible elongation. Therefore, to avoid baggy webs the paper roll shouldn’t be stored for too long.

Geologically-based permeability anisotropy estimates for tidally-influenced reservoir analogs using lidar-derived, quantitative shale character data

The principle source of heterogeneity affecting flow behavior in conventional clastic reservoirs is discontinuous, low-permeability mudstone beds and laminae (shales). Simple ‘streamline’ models have been developed which relate permeability anisotropy (kv/kh ) at the reservoir scale to shale geometry, fraction, and vertical frequency. A limitation of these models, especially for tidally-influenced reservoirs, is the lack of quantitative geologic inputs. While qualitative models exist that predict shale character in tidally-influenced environments (with the largest shales being deposited near the turbidity maximum in estuaries, and in the prodelta-delta front), little quantitative shale character data is available. The purpose of this dissertation is to collect quantitative data to test hypothetical relationships between depositional environment and shale character and to use this data to make geologically-based estimates of for different reservoir elements. For this study, high-resolution, lidar point-clouds were used to measure shale length, thickness, and frequency. This dissertation reports a novel method for using distance-corrected lidar intensity returns to distinguish sandstone and mudstone lithology. Lidar spectral and spatial data, photo panels, and outcrop measurements were used to map and quantify shale character. Detailed shale characteristics were measured from four different tidally-influenced reservoir analogs: estuarine point bar (McMurray Formation, Alberta, Canada), tidal sand ridge (Tocito Sandstone, New Mexico), and unconfined and confined tidal bars (Sego Sandstone, Utah). Estuarine point bars have long (l=67.8 m) shales that are thick and frequent relative to the other units. Tidal sand ridges have short (l=8.6 m dip orientation) shales that are thin and frequent. Confined tidal bars contain shales that are thin, infrequent, and anisotropic, averaging 16.3 m in length (dip orientation). Unconfined tidal bars contain nearly equidimensional (l=18.6 m dip orientation) shales with moderate thicknesses and vertical frequency. The observed shale geometries agree well with conceptual models for tidal environments. The unique shale character of each unit results in a different distribution of estimated . The average estimated kv/kh values for each reservoir element are: 8.2*10^4 for estuarine point bars, 0.038 for confined tidal bars, 0.004 for unconfined tidal bars, and 0.011 for tidal sand ridges. / text

Insights into the distribution and mobility of metals in the sheeted dike complex formed at fast-spreading ridges (Pito Deep, EPR)

Hydrothermal fluid circulation is an important process in the formation and evolution of ocean crust. A tectonic window located at Pit Deep (NE corner Easter Microplate) provides an ideal location to examine a 3-dimensional view of ocean crust formed at the fast-spreading East Pacific Rise. This study focuses on the base metal (Cu, Ni, Mn, Co, Zn, and Pb) content of the bulk rock and mineral components in the sheeted dike complex. There is no observable trend of metal mobility with depth, geographic location, or dominant alteration phase. Secondary mineral analyses (using LA-ICP-MS) show that metals are redistributed throughout the sheeted dikes, entering into secondary sulphides, chlorite, and amphibole. Temperature and mineral stability is a primary control of metal mobility in these rocks. Due to highly variable metal concentrations and observed temperatures of alterations, the hydrothermal cell is suggested to be a continuously evolving system, and can cause the large variability observed in the metal distribution in the sheeted dikes. / Graduate / 0996 / 0411 / 0372

Boundary layer models of hydrothermal circulation on Earth and Mars

Continental and submarine hydrothermal systems are commonly found around the world. Similar systems that sustain water or other fluids are also likely to exist in planetary bodies throughout the solar system. Also, terrestrial submarine systems have been suggested as the locations of the first life on Earth and may, therefore, provide indications of where to find life on other planetary bodies. The study of these systems is vital to the understanding of planetary heat transfer, chemical cycling, and biological processes; hence hydrothermal processes play a fundamental role in planetary evolution. In this thesis, three particular types of hydrothermal systems are investigated through the development of mathematical models: (1) terrestrial low-temperature diffuse flows at mid-oceanic ridges (MORs), (2) submarine near-axis convection on Earth, and (3) convection driven by magmatic intrusives on Mars. Model set-ups for all systems include a two-dimensional space with a vertical, hot wall, maintained at constant temperature, located adjacent to a water-saturated porous medium at a lower temperature. By assuming that convection occurs vigorously and within a thin layer next to the hot wall, boundary layer theory is applicable. The models provide steady-state, single-phase estimates of the total heat and mass transfer rates in each scenario over permeability ranges of 10<sup>-14</sup> m<sup>2</sup> to 10<sup>-10</sup> m<sup>2</sup> for the submarine systems and 10<sup>-14</sup> m<sup>2</sup> to 10<sup>-8</sup> m<sup>2</sup> for the Martian systems. Heat output results derived from the boundary layer model suggest that diffuse flow on MORs contributes 50% or less of heat output to the ridge system, which falls at the low end of observations. For the near-axis model, results found that heat transfer in the hydrothermal boundary layer was greater than the input from steady state generation of the oceanic crust by seafloor spreading. This suggests that the size of the mushy zone evolves with time. Heat output and fluid flux calculations for Martian systems show that fluid outflow adjacent to a single intrusion is too small to generate observed Martian surface features in a reasonable length of time.

A diferença de dureza dos tecidos dentários (cemento, dentina e esmalte) e a pressão mastigatória na superfície oclusal do dente hipsodonte promovem o aparecimento das cristas oclusais afiadas. O tratamento dentário visando o desgaste das desordens oclusais representa a melhor forma de evitar prejuízos digestórios e biomecânicos em cavalos de esporte. O objetivo deste estudo foi mensurar e comparar a altura das cristas oclusais (ACO) do quarto pré-molar antes e após o tratamento de odontoplastia. Foram avaliadas 10 éguas da raça Mangalarga Marchador, na faixa etária de 5 a 12 anos, sob manejo extensivo, mensurando a altura da crista oclusal (ACO) do Triadan 408 por meio de modelos de gesso antes, imediatamente após, 15 dias e 50 dias após a odontoplastia. Logo após o procedimento a ACO era apenas 21,9% da ACO de antes do equilíbrio oclusal; contudo em 15 dias da odontoplastia, 65,9% da ACO já estava reestabelecida, e em 50 dias após o procedimento, 80,3% da ACO. As ACOs dos pontos bucais ressurgiram antes das ACOs linguais, sugerindo uma maior pressão mastigatória destes pontos bucais. A pressão mastigatória e a diferença de dureza dos tecidos dentários oclusais favorece o rápido ressurgimento das cristas trituratórias. Conclui-se que aos 15 dias do tratamento dental, o equino já possui novamente capacidade trituratória do alimento, visto que ACO apresenta-se aparente na superfície oclusal do molar que sofreu odontoplastia. / The occlusal ridges of the equines appeared in the evolutionary process of the species to increase its capacity of grazing and trituration. The difference in hardness of dental tissues (cementum, dentin and enamel) and masticatory pressure on the occlusal surface of the hypsodont tooth promote the appearance of sharp occlusal ridges. Dental treatment aimed at the wearing down of occlusal disorders represents the best way to avoid digestive and biomechanical damages in sport horses, avoid severe fractures in molars. The aim of this study was to measure and compare the height of the occlusal ridges (HOR) of the fourth pre-molar before and after odontoplasty. Ten Mangalarga Marchador´s mares, aged 5 to 12 years, under extensive management, were evaluated by measuring the height of occlusal ridges (HOR) in Triadan 408, using plaster models before, immediately after, 15 days and 50 days after odontoplasty. Immediately after the procedure the HOR was only 21.9% of the HOR before the occlusal equilibration; however in 15 days of odontoplasty, 65.9% of HOR was already reestablished, and in 50 days after the procedure, 80.3% of HOR was. HOR in the buccal side resurfaced before the lingual HORs, suggesting the greater masticatory pressure of these buccal points. The masticatory pressure and the hardness difference of the occlusal dental tissues favors the rapid resurgence of the trituration ridges. It is concluded that 15 days after the dental treatment, the horse already has the triturational capacity of the food, since ACO is apparent on the occlusal surface of molar suffered in odontoplasty.

Effects of off-axis melt supply at fast-spreading mid-ocean ridges: A study of the 9-10n region of the East Pacific Rise

(some col.) / Results from a recent mid-ocean ridge tomography study along the fast-spreading, northern East Pacific Rise (EPR) reveal that the axis of mantle upwelling beneath the ridge is skewed with respect to the spreading axis, giving rise to regions of both rise-centered and off-axis mantle melt accumulation. Here, we investigate the effects of off-axis melt accumulation on the architecture of overlying crust as well as off-axis melt delivery on crustal construction along the ridge axis. We first present evidence for off-axis magmatism 20 km from the spreading center in 300-ka-old crust overlying a region of off-axis melt supply. Seismic data reveal an intrusive complex ∼2 km beneath the seafloor that is limited in lateral extent (<5 km) and comprises a melt lens underlain by low-velocity, high-attenuation crust, which provides the necessary conditions to drive off-axis volcanic and hydrothermal activity. We next present results from thermodynamic modeling that show systematic, along-axis variations in the depth of crystallization and degree of differentiation of magma produce crustal density variations of ∼0.1 g/cm 3 . These density anomalies are on the order inferred from a recent study that shows increasing axial depth along the northern EPR correlates with an increase in crustal density and offset of mantle upwelling with respect to the ridge axis. Our results, along with geophysical and geochemical data from the 9°-10°N region of the EPR, suggest that along-axis deeps correspond with magmatic systems that have significant near-Moho (i.e., crust-mantle transition) crystallization, which we attribute to off-axis delivery of mantle melt. As this investigation is motivated by the EPR tomography results, we conclude with a numerical study that examines the travel time sensitivity of Pn , a sub-crustal head wave commonly used in local travel time tomography, to crustal and mantle heterogeneity. Our results indicate that Pn travel times and Fresnel zones are insensitive to normal sub-axial crustal thickness anomalies, mantle velocity gradients and crust-mantle velocity contrast variations and that mantle low-velocity zones must be at least 3 km thick to produce significant, near-constant Pn delay times. Our data support the validity and interpretation of the EPR tomography results. Analyse de signaux multicomposantes : contributions à la décomposition modale Empirique, aux représentations temps-fréquence et au Synchrosqueezing / Analysis of multicomponent signals : Empirical Mode Decomposition, time-frequency analysis and Synchrosqueezing

Les superpositions d'ondes modulées en amplitude et en fréquence (modes AM--FM) sont couramment utilisées pour modéliser de nombreux signaux du monde réel : cela inclut des signaux audio (musique, parole), médicaux (ECG), ou diverses séries temporelles (températures, consommation électrique). L'objectif de ce travail est l'analyse et la compréhension fine de tels signaux, dits "multicomposantes" car ils contiennent plusieurs modes. Les méthodes mises en oeuvre vont permettre de les représenter efficacement, d'identifier les différents modes puis de les démoduler (c'est-à-dire déterminer leur amplitude et fréquence instantanée), et enfin de les reconstruire. On se place pour cela dans le cadre bien établi de l'analyse temps-fréquence (avec la transformée de Fourier à court terme) ou temps-échelle (transformée en ondelettes continue). On s'intéressera également à une méthode plus algorithmique et moins fondée mathématiquement, basée sur la notion de symétrie des enveloppes des modes : la décomposition modale empirique. La première contribution de la thèse propose une alternative au processus dit ``de tamisage'' dans la décomposition modale empirique, dont la convergence et la stabilité ne sont pas garanties. \`A la place, une étape d'optimisation sous contraintes ainsi qu'une meilleure détection des extrema locaux du mode haute fréquence garantissent l'existence mathématique du mode, tout en donnant de bons résultats empiriques. La deuxième contribution concerne l'analyse des signaux multicomposantes par la transformée de Fourier à court terme et à la transformée en ondelettes continues, en exploitant leur structure particulière ``en ridge'' dans le plan temps-fréquence. Plus précisément, nous proposons une nouvelle méthode de reconstruction des modes par intégration locale, adaptée à la modulation fréquentielle, avec des garanties théoriques. Cette technique donne lieu à une nouvelle méthode de débruitage des signaux multicomposantes. La troisième contribution concerne l'amélioration de la qualité de la représentation au moyen de la ``réallocation'' et du ``synchrosqueezing''. Nous prolongeons le synchrosqueezing à la transformée de Fourier à court terme, et en proposons deux extensions inversibles et adaptées à des modulations fréquentielles importantes, que nous comparons aux méthodes originelles. Une généralisation du synchrosqueezing à la dimension 2 est enfin proposée, qui utilise le cadre de la transformée en ondelettes monogène. / Many signals from the physical world can be modeled accurately as a superposition of amplitude- and frequency-modulated waves. This includes audio signals (speech, music), medical data (ECG) as well as temporal series (temperature or electric consumption). This thesis deals with the analysis of such signals, called multicomponent because they contain several modes. The techniques involved allow for the detection of the different modes, their demodulation (ie, determination of their instantaneous amplitude and frequency) and reconstruction. The thesis uses the well-known framework of time-frequency and time-scale analysis through the use of the short-time Fourier and the continuous wavelet transforms. We will also consider a more recent algorithmic method based on the symmetry of the enveloppes : the empirical mode decomposition. The first contribution proposes a new way to avoid the iterative ``Sifting Process'' in the empirical mode decomposition, whose convergence and stability are not guaranteed. Instead, one uses a constrained optimization step together with an enhanced detection of the local extrema of the high-frequency mode. The second contribution analyses multicomponent signals through the short-time Fourier transform and the continuous wavelet transform, taking advantage of the ``ridge'' structure of such signals in the time-frequency or time-scale planes. More precisely, we propose a new reconstruction method based on local integration, adapted to the local frequency modulation. Some theoretical guarantees for this reconstruction are provided, as well as an application to multicomponent signal denoising. The third contribution deals with the quality of the time-frequency representation, using the reassignment method and the synchrosqueezing transform: we propose two extensions of the synchrosqueezing, that enable mode reconstruction while remaining efficient for strongly modulated waves. A generalization of the synchrosqueezing in dimension 2 is also proposed, based on the so-called monogenic wavelet transform.
