Modeling the Impact of Roof Reflectivity, Integrated Photovoltaic Panels and Green Roof Systems on the Summertime Heat Island

This study presents the results of a modeling effort to explore the role that sustainable roofing technologies play in impacting the rooftop energy balance, and the resultant net sensible heat flux into the urban atmosphere with a focus on the summertime urban heat island. The model has been validated using data from a field experiment. Roofing technologies explored include control dark membrane roof, a highly reflective (cool) roof, a vegetated green roof, and photovoltaic panels elevated above various base roofs. Energy balance models were developed, validated with experimental measurements, and then used to estimate sensible fluxes in cities located in six climate zones across the US. To evaluate the impact on urban air temperatures, a mesoscale meteorological model was used. Sensible flux profiles calculated using a surface energy balance were used as inputs to the mesoscale model. Results for a 2-day period in Portland, OR are analyzed. Average findings indicate that the black roof and black roof with PV have the highest peak daily sensible flux to the environment, ranging from 331 to 405 W/m2. The addition of PV panels to a black roof had a negligible effect on the peak flux, but decreased the total flux by an average of 11%. Replacing a black roof with a white or green roof resulted in a substantial decrease in the total sensible flux. Results indicate that if a black membrane roof is replaced by a PV covered white or a PV covered green roof the corresponding reduction in total sensible flux is on the order of 50%. Mesoscale modeling results indicate peak daytime temperature reduction of approximately 1°C for both white and green roofs. However, there is a nighttime penalty on the order of 0.75°C for the green roof case, which has been attributed to the additional thermal storage of a green roof. Findings also reveal that the addition of PV panels to a roof has a nighttime cooling effect. This is most pronounced on a white roof, with magnitudes of 1°C. The methodology developed for this analysis provides a foundation for evaluating the relative impacts of roof design choices on the urban climate and should prove useful in guiding urban heat island mitigation efforts.

The design, construction and installation of low-slopedroofs are important parts of creating a durable building. Mostof the leakages in low-sloped roofs occur where materials withdifferent thermomechanical properties are joined together. Withbetter knowledge about these joints, the expected service lifecould better be estimated. Common roofing materials onlow-sloped roofs are roof membranes. To avoid damages and to minimise energy consumption thedetection of air and water leaks is essential. It can bedifficult to localise a leak in e.g. a roof since water canflow far within the construction. Leakage detection can beapplied both as a quality assurance method after installationof low-sloped roofs and as field inspection methods. Theleakage detection can also be extended to terrace slabs and thewhole building envelope. To investigate the strength of jointsbetween sheet metaland roofing membranes, several small-scale tests and somelarge-scale tests were performed. The test methods weredeveloped to match the loads that can be expected on this kindof joints. A number of water leak-detection methods were evaluatedthrough application on test roofs. Some of the methods todetect leaks on low-sloped roofs can also be used to detect airleakage in other parts of the building envelope. To develop andevaluate air leak-detection procedures, selected methods wereused in two case studies. The circumstances regarding welding of the material jointswere found to have great impact on the strength. The roofshould be designed so no long-term strain will appear since acomparatively low stress may damage the joint over time. The performance of the leak-detection methods depends on theroofing material. All methods tested were an improvementcompared to visual inspections. Different recommendedapproaches for leakage detection and quality control is given.The case studies show that air leakage detection could beperformed with good accuracy. As espessuras das telhas estão entre os valores de 0,43 mm e 0,80 mm. / The development of the present research has the purpose to study one of the main effect of restriction of the sheeting connected in purlin, that it is the rigidity to the shear. The value of the rigidity to the shear is determined by the influence of the restriction of the sheeting in the lateral displacement of purlin on its longitudinal axis, in function of the spacing of the connection screws. For the determination of the rigidity to the shear an experimental procedure was used, similar to the numerical model, related as DOUBLE BEAM SHEAR TEST - DBST, that allows to evaluate the restriction given for the sheeting to purlin to the shear. For the tests of model DBST the Laboratory of Civil Engineering was used, where had been assayed series of this set for the determination of the rigidity to the shear. Purlins are constituted of the cold formed profile. The distances between purlins are understood between the values of 1000 the 2300 mm. Cost-Effectiveness in Roofing: Alpha SPF Roofs

abstract: The performance of the Alpha Sprayed Polyurethane Foam (SPF) roofing system is perceived as not an economical option when compared to a 20-year modified bitumen roofing system. Today, the majority of roofs are being replaced, rather than newly installed. The coating manufacturer, Neogard, implemented the Alpha roofing program to identify the best contractors in the industry and to measure their roof performance. The Alpha roof system has shown consistent high performance on over 230 million square feet of surveyed roof. The author proposes to identify if the Alpha roof system is renewable, has proven performance that competes with the traditional modified roofing system, and is a more economical option by evaluating an Alpha roof system installation and the performance of a 29-year-old Alpha roof system. The Dallas Independent School District utilized the Alpha program for William Lipscomb Elementary School in 2016. Dallas Fort Worth Urethane installed the Alpha SPF roof system with high customer satisfaction ratings. This roofing installation showed the value of the Alpha roof system by saving over 20% on costs for the installation and will save approximately 69% of costs on the recoating of the roof in 20 years. The Casa View Elementary School roof system was installed with a Neogard Permathane roof system in 1987. This roof was hail tested with ten drops from 17 feet 9 inches of 1-3/4-inch steel ball (9 out of 10 passed) and four drops from 17 feet 9 inches with a 3-inch diameter steel ball (2 out of 4 passed). The analysis of the passing and failing core samples show that the thickness of the top and base Alpha SPF coating is one of the major differences in a roof passing or failing the FM-SH hail test. Over the 40-year service life, the main difference of purchasing a 61,000 square feet Alpha SPF roof versus modified bitumen roof are savings of approximately $1,067,500. Past hail tests on Alpha SPF roof systems show its cost effectiveness with high customer satisfaction (9.8 out of 10), an over 40-year service life after a $6.00/SF recoat and savings of over $1M for DISD. / Dissertation/Thesis / Masters Thesis Construction 2017

Avaliação de resíduos da fabricação de telhas cerâmicas para seu emprego em camadas de pavimento de baixo custo. / Evaluation of the waste from ceramic roofing tiles manufacturing for its use in unbound pavement layers.

Este trabalho apresenta a análise de agregados reciclados de telhas de cerâmica vermelha, visando seu emprego em camadas de pavimentos de baixo custo, baseado em estudos de laboratório. A indústria de cerâmica vermelha gera refugos da queima que são tratados como resíduos, mas se constituem em materiais de alto conteúdo energético e matéria prima de qualidade. O quadro da geração desses resíduos foi diagnosticado nas cidades de Monte Carmelo e Ituiutaba, em Minas Gerais. Os dados quantitativos obtidos indicam que é justificável a sua reciclagem. Somente na cidade de Monte Carmelo, as quantidades geradas permitiriam executar 10,8 km de camada de base de pavimento, ao se misturar 40% de solo poderia atingir 32 km por ano. Aproximadamente 10 t destes resíduos foram britadas obtendo-se o agregado reciclado de telha (ART). Estes agregados foram caracterizados mediante os ensaios físicos e mecânicos, e submetidos aos ensaios empregados na pavimentação, como a metodologia tradicional, metodologia MCT, método da pastilha, resistência ao cisalhamento, outros ensaios denominados índices de qualidade, ensaio de módulo resiliente e deformação permanente. Apesar deste material atender aos principais requisitos da metodologia tradicional, identificou-se que ele quebra com a aplicação de energia de compactação e de tensões nos ensaios, e apresenta alta resiliência - grandes deformações resilientes-, o que levaria à perda da capacidade de suporte da estrutura do pavimento, por fadiga. Desenvolveu-se uma metodologia para a determinação da absorção no estado saturado superfície seca, de agregados porosos, com fração fina inclusive, pois os métodos conhecidos não são aplicáveis; esta metodologia pode ser aprimorada para se constituir em norma de ensaio. Estudou-se um método inédito para a otimização do volume compactado da mistura de agregado com solo, baseado na porosidade do material granular, como uma alternativa ao método da estabilização granulométrica que se mostrou inadequado, no caso. As misturas produzidas com solos lateríticos foram avaliadas após a compactação não apresentando mais a quebra dos grãos do agregado, e mostraram ganhos expressivos no valor do módulo de resiliência, chegando em um caso a atingir 288% acima do módulo do agregado. Os resultados dos ensaios de laboratório indicaram ser possível a aplicação deste material em misturas com solos lateríticos, em camadas de pavimentos de baixo custo. / The purpose of this work is to use recycled aggregate of ceramics roofing tiles for low cost pavement layers, based on laboratory studies. The heavy-clay ceramic industry generates wastes, originated from the calcination stage, that are considered as residues which demand resources for its deposition. However they are high energy content materials which can be useful. The generation of these residues in the cities of Monte Carmelo and Ituiutaba, in the State of Minas Gerais indicated that its recycling is valid. For instance, in the city of Monte Carmelo, it is generated such a large amount of residues that it should be enough to execute about 10,8 km of base course of pavement; moreover if 40% of soil is mixed 32 km pavement per year can be produced. For this study, approximately 10 metric tones of these residues had been crushed to produce the recycled aggregate from roofing tile. The aggregates produced had been characterized by physical and mechanical tests. They were also submitted to the tests used for aggregates for pavement, such as the traditional methodology, methodology MCT (tropical compacted miniature), shear strength, resilient module, permanent deformation, and other tests called quality rates. These residues comply with the main requirements of the traditional methodology, however it is necessary to point out that the material breaks with the application of energy for compaction and under the tensions during the mechanical tests, it also presents high resilience, or great resilient deformations, which will lead to the loss of the supporting capacity of the pavement due to fatigue. An appropriate methodology was developed for the porous aggregate absorption measurement, including its fraction, in the saturated dry surface state. As the known methods for absorption are not applicable, this methodology with improvements can be proposed as standard test. A new method to optimize the compacted volume of the mixture was studied, based on the porosity of the granular material, as an alternative to the traditional method of the grain sized stabilization, which is not adequate for this purpose. The mixtures produced with lateritics soils were evaluated after the compacting, they have not presented the broken grains. These mixtures performed very well with significant increase in the value of the resilience module, up to 288% above of the module of the aggregate. The results of the laboratory indicate that it is possible to use these residues in mixtures with laterític soil, for layers of low cost pavements.

Sendo a cobertura o elemento construtivo mais exposto à radiação solar direta, toma-se um desafio aos pesquisadores e projetistas, atenuar as temperaturas nas coberturas das edificações e contribuir para o uso racional de energia. O objetivo desta pesquisa é monitorar o desempenho térmico de coberturas de fibrocimento em_ células-teste na cidade de Campinas, SP, com aplicação de técnicas passivas de resmamento. Utilizaram-se quatro células-teste: uma célula-teste de referência, e outras três com os sistemas: evaporativo, radiante e reflexivo, respectivamente, e monitoramento das temperaturas superficiais internas das telhas (TT' s) e temperaturas do ar dos áticos (T AA' s), no período de 21 de janeiro a 9 de fevereiro de 2006. Para o sistema de resmamento evaporativo foram utilizados ciclos de aspersão com diferentes intervalos no período todo. Entre as técnicas monitoradas, o melhor comportamento térmico foi verificado no 2° período (de 26 a 30/jan com aspersão contínua) na temperatura da superficie interna da telha do sistema evaporativo (TTevap = 23,2°C) apresentando um decréscimo de 1,3°C em relação a célulateste de referência e um acréscimo de 0,1 °C em relação as médias da temperatura do ar para o período. Nas médias da temperatura do ar dos áticos, o 2° período apresentou os menores valores para os sistemas: reflexivo (TAArefl =23,4°C) e evaporativo (TAAevap = 23,5°C), apresentando uma atenuação de 0,5°C e 0,4°C em relação a célula de referência respectivamente, além de uma elevação de 0,3°C em relação as médias da temperatura do ar externo. Os resultados, analisados através de tratamento estatístico, demonstram a viabilidade do uso do sistema evaporativo em condições climáticas de elevada umidade relativa do ar, contribuindo para atenuar os efeitos das hostilidades climáticas em coberturas das edificações / Abstract: In Brazil, the tropical climate is predominant in most of regions. Roofing is the building component with the highest exposition to direct solar radiation. The challenge for researchers and designers is to achieve cornfort in the built environrnent and to contribute to energy saving, proposing roofing systems with good thermal insulation, and consequently lesser internal surface temperatures. The objective of this research is to monitor the thermal behavior of fiber-cement roofing and to present a discussion about the results obtained in cell-tests in the city of Campinas, SP, through passive cooling techniques. Four cell-tests were used: one cell-test was adopted as reference, and the other three were analyzed with evaporative, radiative and reflective systems, respectively. The evaporative system was tested with different aspersion cycles through spraying systems and intervals. The monitored parameters were the internal surface temperatures of the roofing tiles (TT s) and attic air temperatures (TAA's) in the period of January 21st to February 9th of2006. Among the monitored passive techniques, the best thermal behavior was observed in the 2nd period (iTom January 26th to 30th, corresponding to continue spraying), related to the internal surface temperature with the evaporative system (TTevap = 23,2°C). A reduction of 1,3°C was observed, as compared to the reference test-cell and and an increase of 0,1 °C in comparison with the average air temperature. In relation to the average of attic air temperature, the 2nd period presented the lowest temperature for reflexive system (T AArefl = 23,4°C) and evaporative system (TAAevap = 23,5°C); a reduction of 0,5°C and 0,4°C in relation of the reference test-cell respectively was observed; also, it showed an increase of 0,3°C as compared with air temperature. The results presented through statistical analyses demonstrated that the use of the evaporative system in climatic conditions with high relative humidity is viable, contributing, therefore, to attenuate the effects of climatic hostilities in the roofing buildings / Mestrado / Edificações / Mestre em Engenharia Civil

Avaliação da influência do sombreamento artificial no desenvolvimento de novilhas leiteiras em pastagens / Evaluation of the influence of artificial shade on dairy heifer development in pasture

Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar e quantificar o efeito do sombreamento artificial proporcionado por diferentes tipos de materiais de cobertura sobre a fisiologia, o comportamento e o desenvolvimento de novilhas leiteiras, em ambiente de pastagens. A pesquisa foi realizada no período de 08/01/2007 à 30/04/2007. A área experimental foi dividida em 16 parcelas adjacentes e iguais com 84 m² cada. Foram comparados a testemunha (sem sombra) com três tipos de cobertura: telhas de fibrocimento sem cimento amianto, telhas galvanizadas e tela de polipropileno 80% As dimensões dos abrigos foram 2m x 4m e 4m de altura (4m² de sombra.animal-1), sem paredes laterais. Foram utilizadas 16 novilhas Holandesas e 16 Hol x Jersey com idade e peso iniciais de 17,2 ± 5,6 meses e 265,3 ± 66,9kg, respectivamente, pareadas em função da uniformidade de peso e idade. As novilhas permaneciam em piquetes de capim elefante (Penissetum purpureum) durante a noite e após as 9:00h eram conduzidas para as parcelas. A tgn foi registrada por minidatalogger conectado a globo negro para cálculo de CTR e ITGU em cada parcela. As variáveis meteorológicas foram obtidas no posto agrometeorológico da ESALQ/USP. Semanalmente foram registradas FR, TR e TP. As observações comportamentais foram realizadas em dias não consecutivos por 24 horas pelo método focal. As pesagens dos animais foram realizadas mensalmente. As condições ambientais durante o período da pesquisa foram caracterizadas como estressantes para novilhas. A análise física dos materiais (tgn, CTR e ITGU) indicou diferença entre os materiais de cobertura (P<0,05) sendo a telhas de fibrocimento sem amianto a mais confortável termicamente, seguida da telha galvanizada e da tela. Os valores de FR foram menores sob as telhas de fibrocimento (P<0,05) e semelhantes entre telha galvanizada e tela (P>0,05), os valores de TR não apresentaram diferença entre tratamentos somente entre horários e para a TP houve diferença (P<0,05) entre o tratamento fibrocimento e a testemunha, porém não houve entre os demais (P>0,05). A FR apresentou as respostas mais imediatas às alterações ambientais. Houve correlação da TR com a FR e a TP. Não foram observadas alterações comportamentais entre os tratamentos, os animais ficaram sob as sombras nas horas mais quentes do dia, preferencialmente em pé, o comportamento diário seguiu os padrões conhecidos para bovinos. O ganho de peso não foi alterado pelos tratamentos. A análise de custo indicou a cobertura de fibrocimento como a mais indicada para a construção de abrigos considerando-se os resultados encontrados. A pesquisa indicou haver melhora no bem estar térmico das novilhas, porém, não conseguiu determinar ganhos efetivos na utilização da sombra. / The objective of the present study was to evaluate and quantify the effect of artificial shade given by different types of roofing materials on the physiology, behavior and development of dairy heifers in a pasture environment. The present study took place from January 8, 2007 to April 30, 2007. The experimental area was divided into 16 equal, adjacent plots with 84 m2. Three roofing treatments (fiber-cement roofing tiles without amianthus, galvanized roofing tiles and 80% polypropylene screen) were compared to a control (no shade). Shelter structures had no lateral walls and measured 2m x 4m x 4m height (4m² shaded per animal). Animals consisted of 16 Holstein heifers and 16 Holstein x Jersey heifers with initial age and weight being 17.2 ± 5.6 months and 265.3 ± 66.9 kg, respectively. Animals were equally distributed among the treatments according to weight and age. At night, heifers were kept in fields with Pennisetum purpureum, also known as elephant grass. After 9:00 am, animals were taken to the experimental plots. Black globe thermometer temperature (tbg) was measured using a mini-datalogger connected to a black globe. Values were then used to calculate Radiant Thermic Load (RTL) and Black Globe Humidity Index (BGHI) of each plot. Meteorological variables were obtained from the agricultural-meteorological post at the ESALQ/USP. Respiration rate (RR), rectal temperature (RT) and skin temperature (ST) were registered weekly. Behavioral observations were recorded every other day using the focal method. Animals were weighed monthly. Environmental conditions during the research period were characterized as stressful for the heifers. Physical analysis of the material (tbg, RTL and BGHI) indicated the roofing treatments to be significantly different (P<0.05), with the fiber-cement roofing tiles without amianthus to be the most comfortable regarding temperature, followed by the galvanized roofing tiles and the 80% polypropylene screens. Respiration rate was lower under the fiber-cement roofing tiles (P<0.05) and similar under the galvanized tiles and polypropylene screen (P>0.05). RR values were lower under the fiber-cement tiles (P<0.05) and similar under the galvanized roofing tiles and polypropylene screen (P>0.05). There were no significant differences in RT values among treatments; however, a difference was found among data collection times. Concerning ST, fiber-cement tiles were significantly different from the control (P<0.05). On the other hand, there were no significant differences regarding ST among the other treatments (P>0.05). RR presented the most immediate response to environmental alterations. RT presented correlation with RR and ST. No behavioral alterations were observed among the treatments. Daily behavior followed known bovine patterns. Weight gain was not altered by the treatments. A cost analysis indicated fibercement roofing tiles to be better for shelter construction. The present study also indicated improved heifer thermal well-being; however, no effective gains could be determined from shade use.

The work deals with the summarization of knowledge concerning issues of fiber cement. There are characterized feedstock, production technologies, properties and surface finish corrugated fiber covering. Furthermore, the paper describes the normative requirements for Corrugated Sheets, affecting the quality of manufactured roofing. In the practical part of the thesis were sampled corrugated sheets, which have been investigated possible influences affecting the quality of the surface finish. Was also solved the issue of insufficient adhesion of acrylic paint on selected plates in the factory CEMBRIT a.s. in Šumperk.
