The objective of this project is to design a cell orientation control system using a rotating electric field. In particular, the system utilizes two electrostatic phenomena known as
electrophoresis and electro-rotation. The device used for creating the electric field was designed and fabricated using the MEMS fabrication technique. The cell orientation
control system also includes a vision tracking system that senses the orientation of the
cell and a PID controller. Overall, the system is able to control the orientation of the cell with zero steady state error. The objective of this project has been met.

Effects of twice-over rotation grazing on the relative abundances of grassland birds in the mixed-grass prairie region of southwestern ManitobaRanellucci, Cristina lynn 16 September 2010 (has links)
The mixed-grass prairie region of southwestern Manitoba is a hotspot for many endangered grassland birds. This region has been degraded to less than a quarter of its historical amount of mixed-grass prairie. Remaining prairie is primarily used for livestock grazing. The objective of this study was to evaluate the contribution of sustainable land management practices, such as rotational grazing, in the conservation of this region. In 2008 and 2009, I compared the abundances of grassland birds on two grazing regimes, twice-over rotation and season-long, to ungrazed fields. Bird surveys were done during the breeding season and were conducted using 100-m fixed-radius point-count plots. I determined the effects of treatment, landscape and vegetation characteristics on songbird abundances using generalized linear mixed models. Grassland birds selected grazed pastures over ungrazed fields in both years, and species richness of obligate grassland birds was significantly greater (α = 0.10) on season-long than twice-over pastures (β = 0.419, p = 0.032, in 2008 and β = 0.502, p = 0.043 in 2009). Season-long grazing may actually benefit grassland bird communities by creating somewhat temporally stable areas of high use and low use within the pasture. However, nesting success studies and long-term monitoring are necessary to further understand how twice-over rotation grazing systems contribute to the conservation of grassland birds in southwestern Manitoba.

The effects of fertilization and crop rotations on rainfed barley development, growth and yields, in a semi-arid mediterranean-type climate /Rached, E. M. January 1986 (has links)
A study was conducted for two growing seasons in northeastern Syria to evaluate the effect of N and P fertilizers and previous crops--i.e. vetch (Vicia sativa L.), barley (Hordeum vulgare L. cv. Beecher) or fallow--on water consumption, development, growth and yields of barley in a semi-arid, Mediterranean-type climate. / The two seasons contrasted in rainfall and temperature which affected soil N, water use and yields. Fertilizer addition and residual P were the major determinants in barley yield increases. Rotation effects were significant only when fertilizers were added. Fallowing was an inefficient way of storing water, but stored water was used most efficiently by subsequent barley crops when fertilized. / Fertilizers did not increase total evapotranspiration. Water use efficiency was related to dry matter production at stem elongation (DMse). Grain weight was a stable component of grain yields. Grain number was related to crop growth rates during the three week pre-anthesis period and to DMse, in turn affected by temperature, nutrient and moisture conditions. / Vetch yields were in the order of 2.5 t.ha$ sp{-1}$ in the wetter season (1982/83). / Results showed that substantial barley yield increases can be obtained with innovative crop rotations and appropriate use of fertilizers in semi-arid environments.

Small amplitude rotational irregularities are observed in a number of rotation-powered pulsars. They fall into two classes: (i) glitches, defined as abrupt increases in the angular velocity of a pulsar (accompanied sometimes by changes in the angular acceleration Ω), of which 286 have been observed in 101 objects; and (ii) timing noise, a continuous stochastic fluctuation in phase, or, which is observed mostly in young and adolescent pulsars (with ages ≥ 10 4 yr). Both classes of irregularity seem to arise from some mechanism that couples the angular momentum of the solid crust and superfluid core of the star, which is activated suddenly when differential rotation exceeds a threshold. Coupling mechanisms proposed to date include catastrophic vortex unpinning in the inner crust, triggered by starquakes; vortex creep, due to thermally activated quantum tunnelling; superfluid-superconductor interactions in the core; and superfluid instabilities. The associated theories are phenomenological, not predictive.
