Providing Location Based Security to anUnencrypted WiFi Network / Tillföra plats-baserad säkerhet till ett okrypterat WiFi nätverkNylander, Anders, Andersson, Henry January 2017 (has links)
For this project, we investigate different methods of adding location-based security to a WLAN network. A literature review is done toconfirm the current state-of-the-art on the subject, and we scrutinizethe available methods based on practicality, security, and simplicity. We then further delve into a few specific methods with good prop-erties based on the prior review, to confirm if these are suitable fora proof-of-principle implementation. Finally, if a suitable method isfound, we develop the proof-of-principle to show that the system canwork in practice.

Validation of indoor positioning in water for visually impaired swimmers : Evaluation of recived signal strength indicator for Bluetooth in water for position estimation.Gidlund, Kajsa January 2022 (has links)
A tapper is a person who physically prods a visually impaired swimmer with a stick to inform the latter about the time too turn. If a technical solution could be used instead of the tappers, this would give the swimmer more freedom when training. The goal of the project was to investigate whether, with the help of Bluetooth transmitters and receivers such as a mobile phones or training watches, it is possible to determine a swimmer's positioning so accurately that these can be used for signal systems for visually impaired swimmers when turning. The project tested different placements of transmitters and found that several transmitters in cooperation can give a more accurate and stable value than a single one. Tests showed clear patterns in the recorded values. Patterns in the form of clear peaks when a swimmer is approaching the transmitter. This leads to the conclusion that a Bluetooth system with several transmitters is entirely possible for swimmer detection. But that such a system requires further tests and filtering of Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI) as the signal strength is greatly degraded in water. Placing the transmitters at the ends of the pool seems to give the best results but can advantageously be combined with additional hardware or software sensors for example accelerometer.

Evaluation of Bluetooth 5.1 as an Indoor Positioning System / Utvärdering av Bluetooth 5.1 som ettInomhus Lokaliserings SystemAndersson, Philip, Persson, Linus January 2020 (has links)
There is a high demand for Indoor Positioning Systems (IPS) due to the wide application possibilities. The main issue for localization by wireless signals in an indoor environment is the multipath propagation problem. Multipath propagation occurs when signals reflects and refract from an object, changing the signals characteristics. Today there is no IPS that can balance the cost, accuracy, and complexity. In January 2019 Bluetooth released a new standard, Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) 5.1, which enables the ability to measure the Angle of Arrival (AoA) of an incoming signal. The purpose of this thesis is to mitigate the disturbances caused by multipath propagation by conducting a case study. This was done by designing systems that combine different positioning techniques with sensor fusion and evaluating them based on power efficiency, execution time and precision. Two wireless localization techniques were evaluated, trilateration and triangulation, which are based on Received Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) and AoA respectively, along with an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). An Extended Kalman Filter EKF was used to fuse the sensor data. The system with the best overall performance uses the AoA signals and a multipath mitigation technique. The system with AoA and IMU had a similar performance but has an overall higher complexity due to the added IMU component. The RSSI system could not satisfy the requirement of precision.

An investigation into the use of kriging for indoor Wi-Fi received signal strength estimation / Petrus Jacobus JoubertJoubert, Petrus Jacobus January 2014 (has links)
Kriging is proposed as a tool for Wi-Fi signal strength estimation for complex indoor
environments. This proposal is based on two studies suggesting that kriging might be
suitable for this application. Both of these studies have shortcomings in supporting this
proposal, but their results encourage a more in depth investigation into this.
Even though kriging is a geostatistical method developed for geographical interpolation,
it has been used successfully in a wide range of other applications as well. This further
suggests that kriging might be a versatile method to overcome some of the difficul-
ties of existing signal strength estimation methods. Two main types of signal strength
estimation are deterministic methods and empirical methods. Deterministic methods
are generally very complex and requires input parameters that are difficult to obtain.
Empirical methods are known to have low accuracy which makes them unreliable for
practical use.
Three main investigations are presented in order to evaluate the use of kriging for this
application. A sampling plan is proposed as part of a generic application protocol for
the practical use of kriging for Wi-Fi signal strength. It is concluded that kriging can be
conffidently used as an estimation technique for Wi-Fi signal strength in complex indoor
environments. Kriging is recommended for practical applications, especially where in-
sufficient information is available about a building or where time consuming site surveys
are not feasible. / MIng (Computer and Electronic Engineering), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Evaluating LoRa and WiFi JammingÖst, Albert January 2018 (has links)
Internet of Things changes our world with everything we have around us, our everyday things will be connected to the Internet. According to experts, in two years there will be up to 29 billion devices connected to the Internet. With all of the information that is produced it is important to keep the communication secure, otherwise there can be serious problems in the future. Therefore the objective with this study has been to investigate the area of jamming attacks on wireless communication for Internet of Things, more specifically on LoRa and WiFi technologies. This was made by a literature study to research about Internet of Things, the industrial side of it, the two communication technologies and wireless jamming of them. Additionally to this a small scale test bed system consisting of two LoRa nodes (an Arduino and a LoRa gateway), two WiFi nodes (a laptop and router) and a software defined radio frequency jammer (a HackRF One) were set up. Jamming was performed on the system and evaluated form the perspective of a typical industrial Internet of Things scenario. The testing on the system was done by measuring the received signal strength index, round trip time for a message and packet losses. The study showed that the WiFi communication broke down completely while the LoRa communication stood strong up to the jammer. This concluded that LoRa communication is secure for a typical Internet of Things scenario, from this particular jamming device, or a similar one.

Nowadays, wireless technologies that use radio-frequency are growing, whereby the reason can be attributed to the low cost of this technology and to the possibility of developing several different applications. One of these applications is the localization system in a
wireless sensor network. In this work, a low-cost localization method for open-field applications that uses the RSSI technique to estimate distance and angle is presented: Localization by one Point (LboP). This work includes: literature review of the distance, angle and localization methods, simulation, field tests, determination of the RSSI influences on the precision and accuracy of the positioning, algorithm and firmware of the LboP. This new localization system was realized and field tests show that the LboP accuracy can go down to 0,4 m.A limitation of the proposed method is its dependency on the terrain and on the LboP configurations. Due to the cost reduction of the LboP in comparison to other localization systems, new types of applications may be introduced in the market.

INDOOR-WIRELESS LOCATION TECHNIQUES AND ALGORITHMS UTILIZING UHF RFID AND BLE TECHNOLOGIESWhitney, Ann M. 01 January 2019 (has links)
The work presented herein explores the ability of Ultra High Frequency Radio Frequency (UHF RF) devices, specifically (Radio Frequency Identification) RFID passive tags and Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to be used as tools to locate items of interest inside a building. Localization Systems based on these technologies are commercially available, but have failed to be widely adopted due to significant drawbacks in the accuracy and reliability of state of the art systems. It is the goal of this work to address that issue by identifying and potentially improving upon localization algorithms.
The work presented here breaks the process of localization into distance estimations and trilateration algorithms to use those estimations to determine a 2D location. Distance estimations are the largest error source in trilateration. Several methods are proposed to improve speed and accuracy of measurements using additional information from frequency variations and phase angle information. Adding information from the characteristic signature of multipath signals allowed for a significant reduction in distance estimation error for both BLE and RFID which was quantified using neural network optimization techniques. The resulting error reduction algorithm was generalizable to completely new environments with very different multipath behavior and was a significant contribution of this work.
Another significant contribution of this work is the experimental comparison of trilateration algorithms, which tested new and existing methods of trilateration for accuracy in a controlled environment using the same data sets. Several new or improved methods of triangulation are presented as well as traditional methods from the literature in the analysis. The Antenna Pattern Method represents a new way of compensating for the antenna radiation pattern and its potential impact on signal strength, which is also an important contribution of this effort. The performance of each algorithm for multiple types of inputs are compared and the resulting error matrix allows a potential system designer to select the best option given the particular system constraints.
