Weeds in Sacramento County of California

Clover, Ross 01 January 1937 (has links)
Sacramento County has many types of Agriculture and many weed pests which compete with the crops. Stock may be poisoned by certain weeds and weeds may also act as hosts for fungus diseases, virus diseases and insect pests of cultivated crops. Many plants may be weeds in one locality and harmless or beneficial in other parts. The author has made a thorough study of the country's agriculture and its weeds. Latest control practices were also studied.

The effect of mobility on the scholastic achievement of students at Sacramento Senior High School

Catterall, James Percy 01 January 1954 (has links)
The hypothesis being tested in this study is that students who move from place to place and attend a variety of schools exhibit a level of school achievement below that attained by students from a more stable population. The particular area of investigation was the relationship between the physical mobility of children on the move to industrial areas, and their school achievement as measured by their scholastic grades.

Analysis of the Tidal Range in the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta from 1857 to Present

Szlemp, Elena 01 June 2020 (has links) (PDF)
The Sacramento San Joaquin Delta has been highly altered by human activity since the mid-1800s from mining, agriculture, dredging, and urbanization. Did the resulting modifications to channel width, depth, and length alter tidal range in the Sacramento San Joaquin Delta? In this study, archival tidal records were evaluated at many stations throughout the San Francisco Bay and Delta, with a focus on San Francisco, Rio Vista, Sacramento, and Stockton daily, monthly, and annual tidal ranges. Monthly and seasonally averaged tidal ranges were analyzed to determine seasonal changes. In addition, tidal range was compared to daily Delta discharge to consider the effects of river flow. Results show that the spatial pattern of tidal amplitude through the San Francisco Bay and Delta system have changed since the mid-nineteenth century and the changes are consistent with human and climate change impacts on the Delta landscape. There is a general 7% increase in mean annual tidal range in San Francisco from 1860 to 2018. In Stockton, mean annual tidal range increased from 0.6 meters to 0.9 meters between 1908 and the 1930s but decreased approximately 9% from the 1930s to 2011. Mean annual tidal range in Sacramento increased from zero to 0.5 meters between 1890 and the late 1930s and then decreased by 50% through the early 2000s to approximately 0.25 meters. Lower tidal ranges in the early 1900s are consistent with the effects of hydraulic mining. Increased tidal ranges in the mid-20th century are consistent with dredging throughout the system. Recent decreases in tidal ranges are consistent with wetland restoration, increased water storage, and further modifications to the geometry and management of the Delta. A peak river flow shift from late spring/early summer to early spring has contributed to increased tidal range between February and June by 0.1 and 0.6 meters in San Francisco and Stockton, respectively. In Sacramento, the least decrease in tidal range between 1939 and the present occurred during spring months, due to the decrease in river discharge during this period. Tides have recorded the history of environmental change within the highly altered San Francisco Bay and Sacramento San Joaquin system. While not as notable as similarly altered systems, the changes described here were most significant in Sacramento where mean annual tidal range has ranged between zero and 0.5 meters since 1890 and, for any discharge below 1,000 cubic meters per second, mean daily tidal range is higher from 1938 to 1939 than from 1997 to 2018. Change in tidal range implies potential change in tidal velocities, salinity intrusion dynamics, and flood risk within the system, especially in Sacramento.

The history of Sutter's Fort, 1839-1931

Gwinn, Herbert D. 01 January 1931 (has links) (PDF)
Of all the stories and articles written about Captain J.A. Sutter in recent years, not one of them has adequately covered the history of his famous Fort. To the layman the fort itself may seem unimportant, but when we stop to consider that it was an outpost of civilization penetrating the wilderness of Central California, offering shelter to those who pioneered before us; we must confess that its existence was necessary to protect and usher into full City-hood, the infant Sacramento, then known as New Helvetia.

Structural evolution of crystalline lower plate rocks, Central Sacramento Mountains, Southeastern California

Schweitzer, Janet January 1991 (has links)
The Sacramento Mountains, a metamorphic core complex that lies in the Colorado River extensional corridor of southeastern California, contains complex lithologic and structural relationships. Detailed mapping and petrographic analysis of lower plate rocks from the central part of the range show that three deformation events have been recorded. An amphibolite facies-grade foliation (Sg), which represents the oldest deformational event (D1), is the predominant fabric in the quartzofeldspathic country rock (grey gneiss). The second deformational event (D2) produced a variably developed greenschist facies-grade fabric (Sm) in the grey gneiss and in two post-D1 plutonic suites. Both of these plutons are thought to be Cretaceous or Tertiary in age. Variations in mylonitic development throughout the lower plate can be attributed to the ratio of strong minerals to weak minerals. Those with high strong-to-weak ratios (eg. granodiorite, diorite, tonalite, quartz diorite) do not form foliations as easily as rocks with low strong-to-weak ratios (eg. granite). This results in a diffuse distribution of mylonitic fabrics and many small scale shear zone boundaries. There is no evidence, however, for a major shear zone boundary (mylonitic front) in the Sacramento Mountains. Northeastward-directed Tertiary extension (D3) resulted in development of multiple high-angle and low-angle faults within and adjacent to the lower plate. Chloritic breccia is found along many of these faults and always cross-cuts the mylonitic fabric. Stage 1 of chloritic breccia evolution was the development of low-angle brittle shear zones and oblique fractures, and was accompanied by deposition of cryptocrystalline epidote. Stage 2 was the formation of conjugate fracture sets at a high-angle to the brittle shear zone accompanied by precipitation of chlorite as well as epidote and other propylitic minerals. Evidence for the importance of both high- and low-angle faulting during the structural evolution of the Sacramento Mountains is found in the many faults both within and adjacent to the lower plate. The upper and lower plates are separated by the Sacramento fault system that includes gently, moderately, and steeply dipping, dip-slip to oblique-slip fault segments. Recent models of core complex development hint at the complexity of fault systems and recognize the importance of high-angle faulting in upper plate rocks. However, most lower plate structures are attributed to low-angle faulting and folding of the fault surface. In the Sacramento Mountains, the lack of evidence for folding of the lower plate plus the development of multiple subvertical faults, both within and between plates, suggests that high-angle faulting was important throughout the evolution of the core complex, and not just in the final stages. / Ph. / These thesis aims to analyze the public performance of Miguel do Sacramento Lopes Gama (1793-1852). He was a Benedictine monk born in Pernambuco who became secular at the age of 40 and acted as a successful journalist, six times provincial legislator, twice general legislator and director or several educational institutions in Pernambuco. His performance on two pillars which structures the Brazilian national State construction process will be reviewed: the press and the legislatives assemblies. The hypothesis is that this person was a building agent of those public spaces. Bearing in mind that the success of any political project in the first half of the XIX century in Brazil had to count with the support of the newspapers and with the articulation of the legislatives benches, we intend to analyze the Lopes Gamas projects for the nation, which were elaborated inside those political discussion public spaces.

This research is linked to the Graduation Program in History on Universidade Federal de Pelotas(UFPEL), the propose of this study is to investigate the Portuguese military organization and the daily life of the soldiers involved in the conflict between Portugal and Spain located in the River Plate for possession of Colonia del Sacramento between years 1735 and 1737. This event mobilized a large number of troops and supplies from several places in Brazil and the Portuguese metropolis, thus allowing the creation of an extensive documentation such as diaries and chronicles reports, it took to get closer to the daily life of the military. Therefore, this study is proposed at analyzing the various aspects affecting the private’s daily routine, rarely found in most of the literature that aborts the conflict, which often reduces it to mere numerals, as well as the Portuguese military organization. This study follows the trend of the new military history, historiographical renewal that brings a new look to the military institutions incorporating social, cultural, economic and others to be objects of study. Initially, were investigated the specificities of Colonia del Sacramento and the causes of that conflict. Then, were analyzed the military mobilization made to rescue the war square. Finally, the study works with various aspects of the military daily life, involved in the conflict.
