Religious language within Jürgen Habermas and cognitive linguistics

Derkson, Kyle 16 September 2014 (has links)
Religious language has been theorized in multiple ways. I will look at how religious language has been theorized in the work of Jürgen Habermas and in the field of cognitive linguistics. I will compare these approaches to religious language and assess the results. In doing so, I will indirectly assess the confluence of these two theoretical approaches. My conclusion is that even with the similarities between these theoretical frames, religion is thematized differently under each method. Jürgen Habermas’s definition of religion as the output of ritual praxis is not compatible with the normative place of religious language found in cognitive linguistics.

Death in the City: The St. Lawrence Funeral Centre

Brown, Liam David Renshaw January 2012 (has links)
In contemporary North America, death is contained within a network of cemeteries, crematoria and funeral homes. Death-space and its associative funeral rituals are both sacred and abject resulting in marginalization that adversely affects how the living understand their mortality. Our perception of death influences our place in the world and funeral ritual facilitates our departure from it. In most cities, the funeral home houses this liminal ritual, while also providing the clinical handling and processing of the deceased body. Investigation of the funeral home and its role within the city addresses how architecture can influence cultural views on death. Through the funeral home there is an opportunity to balance the seemingly opposing narratives of the living and the deceased by bringing them together for the funeral. In the City of Toronto, the density of its diverse neighbourhoods is not reflected by a proportionate number of local funeral homes. This thesis proposes a non-denominational space for funeral ritual and cremation within the dense St. Lawrence Neighbourhood. The placement of the Funeral Centre satisfies the practical requirements of this growing community, while the adjacency to the St. Lawrence Market juxtaposes the vibrancy of the ordinary and the solemnity of the sacred. This proposal extends into a network for the scattering of ashes throughout the city aiming to reconnect people to the realities of their existence.

Fiandeira de versos: o imaginário do tecer poético de Hilda Hilst

Morais, Aline Pires de 16 July 2010 (has links)
Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior / The lyric production of Hilda Hilst (1930 - 2004) is marked by the use of symbolic images that amplify endlessly the possibilities of reading her poems. In her knowledge about the world, the poet discovers the cosmos that surround the time which presents her views recast by the poetic reverie. The symbols used by Hilst are expressions of a soul that made the poetry her life during the search of the color, of the link, the wire, the motion of the shuttle, the precision, the texture of the line, finally, of the exact moment of manipulation the wired-word‟. According to this, the eyes of search return to the study of images made by the author, mainly, from the universe weaver. During the investigation of the poetic figurations imagery in the Hilst‟s text, we will consider the imagination like a creative dynamism in the corpus of selected poems from the books: Júbilo, memória, noviciado da paixão and Exercícios. These productions of Hilst legacy show images of the inspired poet and the weaver poet in verses guidelines that combine the strength of the intellect and the need for expression, linked to the poet desire to make the experience of living the raw material of her poems. Thus, the analytical work of the critical myths in the Hilst‟s poems plans to mark the divine nature of human existence, because the poet is spinner, and wired-words‟ are handled under the gift of art, sometimes under the prophetic gift, or under the simultaneous combination of both, the inspiration and work. The Hilda Hilst‟s poetry, connection between prophecy and incantation, it is a mediator between the sphere of the profane and the sacred, capable of making stocks and destinations by the incantation of her corner that leads and snatch. Thus, the voice of Hilst‟s poetry, symbolic representation of the alliance of the words in the fabric of poetic images, protest as an oracle of life that, sanction the reality, can lead to the rapture of the tangent experience to the sacred and, getting to the unflagging unity between poetry and music, can promote the man catharsis in front of his simple reality.

The aim of this work is to analyze the book Poemas malditos, gozosos e devotos (1984) of the Brazilian writer Hilda Hilst (1930 – 2004). The study searches the devoted, cursed and joyful search done by the subject in the poem who aims to obtain the knowledge about himself and about the sacred, represented by the idea of God. In the analyses of the poems it is unveiled the way that this attempt of relationship of “I” facing the object is constructed through the language, from the tension between search and distance and between flesh and spirit, given that in the poems God is the desired lover, but is completely distant and ignores the cries of those who search Him interruptedly and with sacrifice.

No. of bitstreams: 1 arquivototal.pdf: 2731697 bytes, checksum: c6d4966d1294ba469b32bdc0500cd7fe (MD5) Previous issue date: 2013-05-15 / Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior - CAPES / In the Bible we see stories in the meeting of the wives of Isaac, Jacob and Moses, a mythic image, the same plot and a myth. This research aims to highlight and analyze these features seeking to understand them and respond to guiding question "What is the function and meaning of this narrative for the ancient Israelites?". Justify the search in the search for meaning of a sacred history of antiquity that inspired and instructed the people - Jews, and became so important that was recorded in its main holy book. From Mircea Eliade, Gilbert Durand, Joseph Campbell, Arnold Van Gennep, Gershom Sholem, among others, traveled a path where a reading is made of three Bible stories. The methodology used is that of literature with a qualitative approach with reference to the Hebrew Bible and books specializing in myth and symbol, watch out for an analysis supported by the anthropological school of religion. As results stand out: A scenario redundant - a couple who is in a well - alluding to a microcosm and refers the image center, as Eliade - the navel of the world as well, which draws the two complementary forces (male and female) that promote the creation, a plot that evolves into an outcome - an alien who presents after a long journey stops and rests in a well. A woman finds. There is a dialogue between them. There offering water. The woman returns to her home and reported the incident. The alien remains in the well. Relatives of the woman they meet abroad and invites him to join. The alien remains some time with them. Is a marriage; The myth of androgen as primary justification for marriage in Judaism; The journey in search of the bride; The symbolism of the meeting; The mitocrítica these Bible stories. In any way disregard the many other forms of analysis and interpretation previously promoted by researchers, theologians and biblical scholars. This is just a glimpse into the object of the meeting of the wives of the Biblical patriarchs. A look influenced by theorists of symbolic hermeneutics, giving its contribution to the understanding of something that is bigger than any one mind may have already guessed, is that the religious phenomenon and its various forms to submit to the man. O estrangeiro permanece no poço.
