Music for the Saxophone Duet Genre: an Annotated Bibliography of Selected Original Music

Chien, Wei-Lun 08 1900 (has links)
In 1861, Jerôme Savari (1819-1870) composed Duo for Soprano Saxophone and Alto Saxophone. Since then, more than 400 duets were written, yet many musicians are not aware of this repertoire. The lack of recommended repertoire and insufficient information regarding this genre reduces the use of the saxophone duet in both pedagogical and concert settings. The purpose of this study is to examine the importance of the saxophone duet genre by identifying the standard repertoire and creating an annotated bibliography. Twenty-three composers with twenty-six selected works have been identified and will be annotated. All selected works in this document are (1) composed for any two members of the saxophone family; (2) originally composed for saxophone duet (i.e., no transcriptions will be included); (3) published either by companies or by the composers themselves; and, (4) composed between the nineteenth-century through present day. This annotated bibliography of selected repertoire contains two sections: (1) repertoire for performance; and, (2) repertoire for pedagogy. It is the intent of this project that the annotation for each piece could assist performers, teachers and students with their search of currently published works for this genre. The descriptive information in each annotation regarding the composition and its performance considerations should provide further details in order to assist in the program decision-making process.

An Analytical Survey of Hendrik Hofmeyr's Compositions for Solo Saxophone

Davis, Michael James (Saxophonist) 05 1900 (has links)
Hendrik Hofmeyr is considered one of the most important and influential living composers in South Africa. His music for solo saxophone is not well-known in the classical saxophone repertoire. His four works for solo saxophone (Concerto per saxofono contralto e orchestra, Concerto per saxofono baritono e orchestra, Partita canonica, and Necromancer) are substantial and terrific repertoire for the instrument. This study is intended to inform a saxophone performer's understanding of these compositions through analysis of form, melodic, and harmonic content relevant to performance; and, demonstrate through example the conclusions determined by the analysis about apparent compositional techniques in the music.

A Performance Guide for the "Two Quartets for Saxophones" by Guo Yuan (b. 1965)

Lin, Yafei 05 1900 (has links)
This dissertation provides a performance guide for the two quartets for saxophones by the Chinese composer Guo Yuan (郭元, Guō Yuán) (b. 1965): Eyes Creating Sun-Birds (创造太阳鸟的眼, chuàngzào tàiyángniǎo de yǎn), composed in 2012, and The Eyes Threading Through Sun-Trees (穿越太阳树的眼, chuānyuè tàiyángshù de yǎn), composed in 2021. Guo Yuan is a professor in the Composition Department at the Sichuan Conservatory of Music. He is one of the earliest Chinese composers to have created works for the saxophone. These two pieces were chosen because they demonstrate mature compositional skills and high artistic value, representing a refined level of development of Chinese quartets. Significantly, the composer identifies the two quartets as belonging to a specific series of compositions: both pieces are inspired by the Jinsha (金沙, jīnshā) Site and the Sanxingdui (三星堆, sānxīngduī) Civilization. To facilitate a performance guide, the two works have been analyzed. In particular, an analysis of the method whereby Guo manipulates the timbre and texture through the use of the four parts in the ensemble as well as uses traditional Chinese elements to describe the music should help performers to interpret the desired effect of each compositional technique.

Muzikavimo saksofonu ypatumai interpretacinės raiškos galimybių kontekste / Peculiarities of playing the saxophone in the context of possibilities of interpretational expression: in music education

Baltutis, Donatas 04 August 2011 (has links)
Bakalauro darbas „Muzikavimo saksofonu ypatumai interpretacinės raiškos galimybių kontekste“ parengtas 2011 metais. Tyrimo objektas – muzikavimo saksofonu ypatumai. Tyrimo tikslas – išanalizuoti muzikavimo saksofonu ypatumus muzikos mokyklose. [toliau žr. visą tekstą] / The Bachelor’s Thesis „Peculiarities of playing the saxophone in the context of possibilities of interpretational expression” was prepared in 2011. Research object: peculiarities of playing the saxophone. The aim of the research: to analyze the peculiarities of playing the saxophone in music schools. Research objectives: to reveal the peculiarities of the saxophone, describe the most famous performers of the saxophone music, determine the types of music performed by the saxophone, analyze methodological recommendations and interpretational peculiarities and describe the art project. In the process of teaching students to play the saxophone teachers mostly follow their own developed methodology and methodological recommendations designed for the wind instrumentalists, because Lithuanian wind instrument education suffers from various issues that are mainly named as the lack of literature (notes), insufficient technical facilities (lack of qualitative instruments), unprepared explicit saxophone methodology and programs. Analysis of theoretical sources and implementation of the art project enables to distinguish the main aspects of playing the saxophone: right breathing, posture, correct hand position. Music teachers should pay attention to these aspects in their professional activities and aim at qualitative performance of music by adding specific didactic recommendations to the teaching process. Saxophone is a musical instrument that allows free interpretations of music as it... [to full text]
