The present study was constructed in the Research Line Public Policy, School Organization and Teacher Education and aimed to investigate the consequences of the model of conflict resolution called Restorative Justice on the prevention of violence, serious indiscipline and promotion of the culture of peace in a public school in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo. Restorative practices are very old as a negotiated and peaceful resolution of conflicts, originated in the models of social organization of pre-state European communal societies and of native communities, but were eventually neutralized by the efforts of colonization. Violence in schools is a phenomenon that has won the public debate since the 1980s, along with the process of democratization of the country. The school is not impervious to social phenomena, so that violence and indiscipline, whatever its causes, affects those involved in the educational process and the quality of the learning environment in this special area of secondary socialization, also responsible for the person development, that must prepare them for work, citizenship and mutual respect. Violence in schools calls for effective coping, beyond individual and fragmented experiences, but as an object of principles and guidelines set forth in public policy. The research approaches tangentially violence in national and world stage, deals with its effects on society and in schools, and examines the experience of using restorative justice as an alternative or complementary effort on resolution of conflicts in a certain public school in the Metropolitan Region São Paulo ... The assessment of the management of school environment: implications for whole school evaluation.Masiteng, Samuel Mathibela 14 October 2008 (has links)
M.Ed. / This report provides the results of a social scientific research on the assessment of the management of school environments and its implications for the Whole School Evaluation (WSE). Through a qualitative research design that used photos and field notes, the researcher personally collected data from 21 Qwaqwa schools. Maximum variation- and theoretical purposive sampling techniques were used for data collection. With maximum validity and reliability, the research results showed that Qwaqwa schoolyards are big and that the school land is not effectively utilised. Although there is currently no policy that perfectly assesses the management of school environments (except the WSE), the results showed that Qwaqwa schools freely use their own individual creative strategies for the management of their environments. The results revealed that schools consist of two kinds of environments, namely, natural and other manmade physical environments. The research results provided evidence that the schools can manage their natural environments through grass, trees, gardens and school parks. The results also revealed that manmade aspects of school environments can be best managed through rockeries, sport fields, paving, parking areas, general maintenance of buildings and symbols such as the school flag, the national flag of South Africa and plaques. The results further revealed that there are various forms of waste and refuse in schools and that littering was still a problem. However, the findings revealed that certain schools used rubbish bins to address the problem. The researcher thus recommends that these creative strategies be recognised and added to WSE criteria for effective school environment management. / Prof. K.C. Moloi

The design and effective implementation of a financial school policy for school improvement.Naidoo, Parvathy 21 October 2008 (has links)
M.Ed. / The design and implementation of a financial school policy is an important function of the School Governing Body. Although every public school designs a financial school policy, the success of managing the school’s finances effectively and efficiently is dependent on how the policy is implemented. The aim of this research was to investigate the role played by the School Governing Body (SGB) and the School Management Team (SMT) in the design and effective implementation of the financial school policy. The impact of the South African Schools Act together with the Norms and Standards for Funding on state funding, school fees and school fees exemptions were also explored. The functions of the SGB in respect of financial matters and the role played by the finance committee emphasizes the devolution of financial matters from the state to communities. By virtue of the Schools Act the principal is responsible for the professional management of the school and together with the SGB is directly responsible for the effective use of all funds belonging to the school. It is incumbent upon the SGB and the SMT to take accountability for all their financial activities by being transparent and responsible in the management of school funds. The design of a financial school policy and the effective implementation thereof will ensure school funds being managed effectively and efficiently. The quantitative research method was used to elicit the perceptions of SGBs, SMTs and educators with regards to the designing and implementing of the financial school policy. This research study was confined to primary and secondary schools in the district D9, D10, D11 and D12 areas of the Gauteng Province. A structured questionnaire was distributed to members of the SGB, SMT and educators in the above-mentioned districts. The empirical study resulted in mean scores of the thirty-two items ranging between 2,63 and 5,34. An analysis of the data revealed that the financial school policy is central to all financial activities in schools and it must be designed and implemented by all stakeholders. / Prof. R. Mestry
