Fast screening of metal contaminated soil using a x-ray fluorescence method

The purpose of this research is to develop a rapid determination method for heavy metals in soil. Using X-ray fluorescence to obtain soil metals decision limit (CC£\) and detection capability (CC£]), to establish the scope of soil metal concentration selection. Then aqua regia digestion digestion and ICP-OES analysis of Pb, Cd, Zn, Ni, Cr, Cu area to check the accuracy of screening. Operating conditions; First, the soil standard samples for the Establishment and assessment of the applicability of the standard. Finally,using of the soil near the control standard establish methods and explore ways to establish the applicability and potential impact. I hope this research can provide a fast, accurate, and sensitivity of soil heavy metal screening, to achieve savings of cost. The results show that the standard reference soil Cu: screening rate was 79.7%, sensitivity was 43.6% and an specificity of 87.7%; reference standard soil Pb: screening rate was 91.5%, a sensitivity of 8.3% specificity 91.5%;reference standard soil Cr:screening rate was 100%, sensitivity was 0%, 100% specificity; reference standard soil Ni: screening rate was 96.1%, sensitivity was 0%, specificity 92.4%; reference standard soil Zn: screening rate was 82.4%, sensitivity was 69.2%, specificity 87.1%; reaching control values of soil Cu: screening rate was 83.0%, sensitivity was 30.8%, specificity of 84.3%. Screening rate and specificity with 80%, the sensitivity poor areas, water was the major disturbance factor.

The product analyzed was injectable dipyrone (1g/2 mL) sold in amber colored vials of 1.1 cm outer diameter, and 6 cm in height. Initially, spectroscopic studies were carried out employing a commercial spectrophotometer to assess the best NIR spectrum regions that might be used. The instrument developed used two twin LEDs with NIR radiation emissions rated at 1050 ± 50 nm. Two InGaAs photodiodes (also identical), and a PIC18F455 microcontroller were used as well. The output of the instrument used a PIC microcontroller coupled to a 20x2 liquid crystal display which communicated with a PC by USB 2.0 for communication. The instrument evaluated commercial dipyrone injection samples using absorbance measurements made directly from ampoules of the injectable medicines. The photometer was calibrated with standard solutions of dipyrone, and its performance was evaluated by an analysis of 620 of the commercial dipyrone injection samples, where 320 were expired. The instrument had a high success rate for screening analysis (91%). For quantitative determination of the active dipyrone, a linear response was obtained [R2 = 0.9964, A = 0.0068 + 0.0043 C (% w/v)] in the concentration range of 5 to 60% m/v. We also obtained a low relative error of 0.40%, and good accuracy in the analyses with a relative standard deviation of 2.13%. / Neste trabalho foi desenvolvido um fotômetro LED-NIR duplo feixe microcontrolado e portátil para análise screening e quantitativa de medicamentos injetáveis de forma não destrutiva/não invasiva, visando investigar a conformidade desses com os valores estabelecidos na Farmacopéia Brasileira. O medicamento analisado foi a dipirona sódica injetável 1g/2mL, comercializados em ampolas de coloração âmbar. Foram realizados inicialmente estudos espectroscópicos empregando um espectrofotômetro comercial para avaliar quais as melhores regiões do espectro NIR que poderiam ser empregadas para a determinação da espécie de interesse. O instrumento desenvolvido utiliza dois LEDs-NIR com emissão de radiação nominal em 1050 ± 50 nm gêmeos (de mesmas especificações técnicas), dois fotodiodos de InGaAs também idênticos e um microcontrolador PIC18F455. Como dispositivos de saída do instrumento foram empregados o microcontrolador PIC acoplado a um display de cristal líquido 20x2, o qual também se comunica com um microcomputador portátil por comunicação USB 2.0. O instrumento foi avaliado com amostras comerciais de dipirona sódica injetável por medidas de absorbância efetuadas diretamente nas ampolas dos medicamentos injetáveis. O fotômetro foi calibrado com soluções padrão de dipirona e seu desempenho foi avaliado na análise de 620 amostras comerciais de dipirona injetável, das quais 320 apresentavam prazo de validade expirado. O instrumento obteve elevado índice de acerto para a análise screening (91%). Para determinação quantitativa do princípio ativo dipirona, uma resposta linear foi obtida [R2 = 0,9964, A = 0,0068 + 0,0043 C (% m/v)] na faixa de concentração de: 5 a 60 % m/v. Também foi obtido um baixo erro relativo conjunto (0,40 %) e boa precisão nas análises (desvio padrão relativo conjunto = 2,13%).

Uncertainty treatment in performance based seismic assessment of typical bridge classes in United States

Bridge networks are expensive and complex infrastructures and are essential components of today's transportation systems. Despite the advancement in computer aided modeling and increasing the computational power which is increasing the accessibility for developing the fragility curves of bridges, the complexity of the problem and uncertainties involved in fragility analysis of the bridge structures in addition to difficulties in validating the results obtained from the analysis requires precaution in utilization of the results as a decision making tool. The main focus of this research is to address, study and treatment of uncertainties incorporated in various steps of performance based assessments (PBA) of the bridge structures. In this research the uncertainties is divided into three main categories. First, the uncertainties that come from ground motions time and frequency content alteration because of scarcity of the recorded ground motions in the database. Second, uncertainties associated in the modeling and simulation procedure of PBA, and third uncertainties originated from simplistic approach and methods utilized in the conventional procedure of PBA of the structures. Legitimacy of the scaling of ground motions is studied using the response of several simple nonlinear systems to amplitude scaled ground motions suites. Bias in the response obtained compared to unscaled records for both as recorded and synthetic ground motions. Results from this section of the research show the amount of the bias is considerable and can significantly affect the outcome of PBA. The origin of the bias is investigated and consequently a new metric is proposed to predict the bias induced by ground motion scaling without nonlinear analysis. Results demonstrate that utilizing the predictor as a scaling parameter can significantly reduce the bias for various nonlinear structures. Therefore utilizing the new metric as the intensity measuring parameter of the ground motions is recommended in PBA. To address the uncertainties associated in the modeling and simulation, MSSS concrete girder bridge class were selected due to the frequency of the construction in USCS region and lack of seismic detailing. A large scale parameters screening study is performed using Placket-Burman experimental design that considers a more complete group of parameters to decrease the computational expense of probabilistic study of the structure's seismic response. Fragility analysis for MSSS bridge is performed and the effect of removing the lesser important parameters the probabilistic demand model was investigated. This study reveals parameters reduction based on screening study techniques can be utilized to increase efficiency in fragility analysis procedure without compromising the accuracy of the outcome. The results from this study also provides more direct information on parameter reduction for PBA as well as provide insight into where future investments into higher fidelity finite element and constitutive models should be targeted. Conventional simplistic PBA approach does not account for the fundamental correlation between demand and capacity models. A more comprehensive PBA approach is presented and fragility analysis is performed with implementation of a new formulation in the component fragility analysis for MSSS bridge class and the outcome is compared with the one from conventional procedure. The results shows the correlation between demand and capacity affects the outcome of PBA and the fragility functions variation is not negligible. Therefore using the presented approach is necessary when accuracy is needed.

Esta pesquisa visa a análise da contribuição de cinco variáveis de entrada e a otimização do desempenho termo-hidráulico de trocadores de calor com venezianas combinados com geradores de vórtices delta-winglets. O desempenho termohidráulico de duas geometrias distintas, aqui nomeadas por GEO1 e GEO2, foram avaliadas. Smoothing Spline ANOVA foi usado para avaliar a contribuição dos parâmetros de entrada na transferência de calor e perda de carga. Considerando aplicação automotiva, foram investigados números de Reynolds iguais a 120 e 240, baseados no diâmetro hidráulico. Os resultados indicaram que o ângulo de venezianas é o maior contribuidor para o aumento do fator de atrito para GEO1 e GEO2, para ambos os números de Reynolds. Para o número de Reynolds menor, o parâmetro mais importante em termos de transferência de calor foi o ângulo das venezianas para ambas as geometrias. Para o número de Reynolds maior, o ângulo de ataque dos geradores de vórtices posicionados na primeira fileira é o maior contribuidor para a tranfesferência de calor, no caso da geometria GEO1, enquanto que o ângulo de ataque dos geradores de vórtices na primeira fileira foi tão importante quanto os ângulos das venezianas para a geometria GEO2. Embora as geometrias analisadas possam ser consideradas como técnicas compostas de intensificação da transferência de calor, não foram observadas interações relevantes entre ângulo de venezianas e parâmetros dos geradores de vórtices. O processo de otimização usa NSGA-II (Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm) combinado com redes neurais artificiais. Os resultados mostraram que a adição dos geradores de vórtices em GEO1 aumentaram a transferência de calor em 21% e 23% com aumentos na perda de carga iguais a 24,66% e 36,67% para o menor e maior números de Reynolds, respectivamente. Para GEO2, a transferência de calor aumentou 13% e 15% com aumento na perda de carga de 20,33% e 23,70%, para o menor e maior número de Reynolds, respectivamente. As soluções otimizadas para o fator de Colburn mostraram que a transferência de calor atrás da primeira e da segunda fileiras de geradores de vórtices tem a mesma ordem de magnitude para ambos os números de Reynolds. Os padrões de escoamento e as características de transferência de calor das soluções otimizadas apresentaram comportamentos vi particulares, diferentemente daqueles encontrados quando as duas técnicas de intensificação de transferência de calor são aplicadas separadamente. / This doctoral thesis focuses on screening analysis of five input parameters and heat transfer and pressure drop optimization of flat-tube multi-louvered fin heat exchangers combined with delta-winglet vortex generators. The thermal-hydraulic performance of two distinct geometries, GEO1 and GEO2, were evaluated. Smoothing Spline ANOVA was used to evaluate the contribution of the input parameters such as louver angle, angle of attack of the delta-winglet and streamwise position of the delta-winglet on heat transfer and pressure drop. Taking the automotive application into account, Reynolds numbers of 120 and 240, based on hydraulic diameter, were investigated. The results indicated that the louver angle is the main contributor to increase the Friction factor for GEO1 and GEO2 for both Reynolds numbers. For the lower Reynolds number, the most important heat transfer parameter was the louver angle for both geometries, while at the higher Reynolds number, the angles of attack of the first row of delta-winglets mostly contributed to GEO1, and the angle of attack of the first row of delta-winglets was as important as the louver angle for GEO2. Although those specific geometries can be considered a kind of compound enhancement technique, relevant interactions were not verified between louvers and delta-winglet vortex generators parameters. The surrogatebased optimization procedure uses NSGA-II method (Non-Dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm) combined with artificial neural networks. The results showed that the addition of DWLs on GEO1 increased the heat transfer of 21.27% and 23.52% with associated pressure loss increasing of 24.66% and 36.67% for the lower and the higher Reynolds numbers, respectively. For GEO2, the heat transfer was increased 13.48% and 15.67% with an increase of the pressure drop of 20.33% and 23.70%, for the lower and the higher Reynolds numbers, respectively. The optimized solutions for the Colburn factor showed that heat transfer behind the second row of deltawinglets has the same order of magnitude of that behind the first row, for both Reynolds numbers. The flow patterns and heat transfer characteristics from optimized solutions presented some particular behavior, differently from the findings when those two heat transfer enhancement techniques are applied separately.
