Lover TongueKanika Ahuja (19199788) 27 July 2024 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">This is a book-length thesis project of poems grappling with themes of love, loss, and longing. The poems are based mostly in New Delhi or Indiana, but occasionally travel to other parts of either of the two countries. The poems are interested in the ways in which we treat the land we inhabit, question belonging and birthright, and are susceptible to the projections of violence these questions and claims demand. The poems feature beloveds, romantic or otherwise, characters from the speaker’s family, and casual acquaintances. This is a book-length project of poems of a life lived, a life loved, and a life still learning from the hubris of human love.</p>

Aud of the DeadRobin L DeLaughter (15350794) 02 May 2023 (has links)
<p>This creative thesis includes the first six chapters of <em>Aud of the Dead</em>, a novel that combines the genres of speculative science fiction, supernatural fiction, and dystopian fiction. The purpose of the novel is to provide an entertaining example of the soft science fiction genre where the plot exists for the characters, not the other way around.</p>
<p><br></p>
<p>The novel’s main protagonist is Aud, who was born on Earth in the year 2000. In the year 2024, Earth was invaded and subjugated by aliens called the Impixi. Years later, amid a successful Human rebellion, the actions of another alien species, the Architechs, left Earth in an apocalyptic shroud of toxic dust, vapor, and ash that would ultimately wipe out all life on the planet. But not every Human that died stayed dead. Millions of them became what would later be classified as a new sentient species, named “Anima” by the multigalactic scientific community. The former Humans, however, don’t believe they are a new species; they believe they are the ghosts, or “spectres,” of their living selves, and on their dead homeworld now called Quietus, they are essentially present-day Humans stripped down to the relentless pathos of the living dead. </p>
<p><br></p>
<p>The novel begins one hundred years after Earth’s apocalypse when the All Worlds War has come to an end. Aud is returning home from playing her part in the war when she suddenly finds herself responsible for an “Unquiet” called Ometa, a new Anima that was not born Human and did not die one century ago on Quietus. Ometa was an Architech in life, and now Aud must keep that epic secret while teaching Ometa how to navigate existence as an Anima. At the same time, Ometa teaches Aud how to overcome the limitations of living as the dead. </p>

NUDE IMPERATIVEToluwalase Praise Akinwale (17583012) 08 December 2023 (has links)
<p dir="ltr">With a particular focus on her twelve years of partnership with Ulay, the life and work of performance artist Marina Abramović are taken as ekphrastic subjects in a research-based poetics reflecting the author’s understandings of art, love and belonging. In dynamic movements of literary form throughout the manuscript, <i>Nude Imperative</i> makes a restless inquiry into the meaning of embodiment as a person in language, desire, and diaspora, the nature of relation between this individual self and the intimate other, and the limits of these human connections; the limits of love.</p>

This study explores the possibilities of rewriting the text of a complex novel as a film
script. Film is an important contemporary artform but the actuality of the thematic
content of contemporary Afrikaans novels is not well represented in current films. In
this study an adaptation of the novel, The long silence of Mario Salviati by Etienne
van Heerden (2000) ,t o a script is made in an attempt to provide the Afrikaans
scriptwriter with a workable method. The theme which features prominently in the
adaptation is the experience of identity in the post-colonial and/or post-apartheid era
in South Africa.
Theoretical reflection on the problem of adaptation is essential before the chosen
novel can be turned into a script, since the scriptwriter has to make certain
adjustments during the process of adaptation. The adaptation of a novel to a script
implies the translation of a written, descriptive text into a visual text. When a
complex novel such as The long silence of Mario Salviati is rewritten as a script, a
detailed analysis of the novel must be undertaken in order to identify the relevant
ideological content, the important themes and underlying meanings which should be
retained in the film script. In order to find appropriate visual images for the thematic
content of the novel, contributions of semiotics to film studies are studied and
implemented in the process of visualisation.
The chosen theme for the script of The long silence of Mario Salviati is "Identity,
hybridity and liminality in the Tallejare community". This theme features
prominently in many narratives about post-colonial and post-apartheid issues;
therefore theoretical reflections on the concepts of liminality and hibridity are
included in the study.
There are two main sections in the dissertation. In the first section aspects of
scriptwriting are analysed and discussed in order to develop a workable method for
scriptwriters. The study entertains the hope that more contemporary Afrikaans novels
will be adapted for the big screen or television by the film industry. This is necessary
to ensure that the experience of South African identity is represented adequately in
the Afrikaans film industry.
The second section of the dissertation contains the film script, which is an adaptation
of the novel The long silence of Mario Salviati by Etienne van Heerden. The script
forms an integral part of the study as well as of the dissertation. / Thesis (M.A. (Afrikaans and Dutch))--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2007.
