Language choices in the EFL classroom : A mixed-methods study at Swedish lower-secondry schools

Adolfsson, Mikaela January 2022 (has links)
Globalization has led to English being the leading language of communication providing opportunities for pupils to develop their English proficiency in different contexts. In this study, teachers’ language choices in the EFL classroom are being observed and the reasons behind them are being discussed during the following interviews. The study aims to increase our understanding of what role the English language as the primary teaching language should have in the EFL classroom at Swedish lower secondary schools to benefit pupils’ language learning in the best way possible. Four teachers, that are teaching at two different lower-secondary schools in southern Sweden participated in the study. In total four classroom observations were conducted followed by four semi-structured teacher interviews. The results found during observations and interviews were then connected to the theories of Language Mode, Translanguaging and Codeswitching. The results of the observations showed a slight difference in the use of English and Swedish during teaching. This study concludes that there is a slight variation in what role the English language has in the four observed classrooms. However, the contexts in which it was used were all coherent. Furthermore, the use of Swedish also showed a slight variation but was explained to be used as a tool for explaining, clarifying and ensuring understanding. Finally, the use of translanguaging practices was believed to have a positive effect on pupils’ learning outcomes although a slight difference was shown here as well.

Gymnasieskolor och resiliens : Anställdas uppfattningar om gymnasieskolors resiliens under coronakrisen våren 2020 till våren 2021. / Upper secondary schools and resilience : Employees' perceptions of upper secondary schools’ resilience during the corona crisis in spring of 2020 to spring of 2021.

Övergaard, Ina, Blonde, Staffan January 2022 (has links)
The corona crisis has been and still is at the time of writing a major societal burden for many different types of organizations and has been particularly stressful for upper secondary schools. At the same time, it has led to a good opportunity to explore organizations' crisis management. This study is based on previous research on resilience to further develop the understanding of the concept and its practical meaning by examining how employees' perceptions of organizational resilience are affected by their demographic background and working from home conditions. The study was conducted through a correlation analysis of survey questions based on Mallak's (1998a) principles of resilience and questions about demographic background as well as the conditions for working from home aimed at employees at upper secondary schools in Skåne. The study identified indications of a strong connection between some of Mallak's (1998a) principles (especially principles that concern the employees' own work) and employees' perceptions of their conditions while working from home. The study also identified some connection with demographic background information and some of the principles, but this connection was weaker. This indicates that there is a need to further research the needs of employees while working from home as well as for organizations to meet those needs and to examine how employees' perceptions affect the organizations resilience.

Klasifikace ve výuce angličtiny na středních školách / Grading in English lessons at secondary schools

Dodecká, Ivana January 2021 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to find out how English teachers at secondary schools grade students' performance, to what extent teachers grade systematically and what the possible weaknesses in these systems are. A questionnaire sent to various types of secondary schools ('gymnázium', SOŠ, SOU) was used for data collection. Respondents were evaluated based on their grading approach, with questions covering, among others, the following areas: use of grading criteria and type of activities graded, grading principles followed, availability of grading guidelines within schools and the extent to which these were binding, teacher instruction on grading at university, and so on. The results of the research pointed to a non-systematic grading approach in English lessons which may result in inconsistency in student performance assessment across the secondary school system. In its conclusion, the thesis identified critical areas of the non-systematic grading approach and sought possible improvements. Keywords: grading, assessment, quantitative assessment, English languages skills, secondary schools, English teachers

Pracovní spokojenost učitelů angličtiny v České republice / Job Satisfaction of English Teachers in the Czech Republic

Altınkalp, İrem January 2021 (has links)
Despite the burgeoning interest in foreign language learning and teaching practices, the research on English teachers' job satisfaction has remained rather scarce, particularly in the Czech context. The current diploma thesis, hence, has aimed to provide insights into the determinants of job satisfaction, with respect to English teachers working at primary and secondary schools. The thesis is categorized into two parts, a theoretical part and a practical part. The theoretical part of the study covers the term job satisfaction. It identifies and analyzes existing research to present definitions and major theories and to provide guidance and basis for the research. Then, it expounds both international and Czech literature on job satisfaction among teachers, highlighting the need for conducting the research. The practical part displays the methodology, covering data collection tools and the sample selection. Next, the findings are presented and discussed to shed light on the issue and to recommend adjustments in the subject matter to improve and prosper English language education in the Czech Republic. Exploration of the causes of poor performance in mathematics in secondary schools at Thulamahashe Circuit

Mathebula, Mkateko Victoria. January 2022 (has links)
Thesis (M.Ed. (Curriculum Studies)) -- University of Limpopo, 2022 / This study investigated the poor performance of learners in mathematics in a rural secondary schools in Bohlabela District in Mpumalanga province. Mathematics is one of the most critical subjects globally and in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa, specifically. The purpose of this study was to explore the possible causes of poor performance of learners in mathematics in schools. In this study, non-probability sampling was used whereby a purposive sampling strategy was adopted. The participants in this study were secondary school teachers and learners. Twenty mathematics (20) learners participated in this research. These learners were sampled from a pool of 54 Grade 12 learners in one school. Learners were then grouped according to their level of understanding to the subject. The focus was on Grade 12 because it is the exit point of FET. In this study, a case study approach was adopted whereby interviews, documents and observation were used to collect data. The choice of the research design was guided by the following research question: What are the causes of poor performance of Grade 12 learners in mathematics in rural secondary schools? The sub–questions were: What strategies do teachers use to address poor performance of learners in mathematics in Grade 12 in rural secondary schools? What is the role of the department of education in addressing poor performance of learners in mathematics in rural secondary schools? The data analysis involved the generating of themes related to the data collected. In this way, different parts of the narratives were grouped under identified categories. The study found that lack of resources, poor teaching methods, anxiety and attitude towards mathematics contribute to learners’ poor performance in mathematics in Grade 12 in rural secondary schools. The research concludes that teachers should engage learners in more writing activities in order for them to learn effectively and to perform better in mathematics. The study also recommends that teachers should use a variety of teaching methods to teach mathematics and the schools should be well-resourced and teachers should address learners’ anxiety in mathematics to develop the love for mathematics and also enhance positive attitude towards mathematics

Language Anxiety Among Heritage Speakers of Spanish on the Texas-Mexico Border

Cherry, Leigh A. 08 July 2011 (has links) (PDF)
There is an increased need for bilingual education programs throughout the U.S. as a result of the increasing bilingual population, especially Spanish-English bilinguals. With the implementation of such programs there also exists the need to be aware of issues that affect bilinguals and their language learning experience. One of these issues that has been investigated among foreign language learners, but less among bilinguals, is the issue of language anxiety. This case study reports the findings gathered from classroom observations, a language survey, focus group interviews and teacher interviews in order to better understand the issue of language anxiety among heritage language learners on the border. The information gathered from student and teacher participants at a high school in South Texas describes students' language background and attitudes toward language learning as well as teachers' background, beliefs about language teaching. Results include responses from both students and teachers in reference to what creates language anxiety and what can be done in the classroom to mitigate its effects. Results indicate that language anxiety is not the issue of greatest concern, although some lower proficient bilinguals experience it. Rather, it was found that poor classroom management has the ability to affect nearly every other aspect of a language class, directly affecting language expectations, language use, classroom routine, attitudes, and even the level of language anxiety. Due to poor classroom management, a very low expectation has been set for these students and as a result, there is also a low percentage of students who experience language anxiety. Recommendations for improving bilingual language classes come from students' comments during focus group interviews.
