Avaliação e quantificação da contribuição de uma voçoroca para o assoreamento do Ribeirão das Cruzes, tributário da represa de Três Irmãos, SP / Assessment and quantification of a gully erosion contribution to the Ribeirão das Cruzes siltation, a tributary of the Três Irmãos dam, SP

Camargo, André Aukar Britschgy de 29 June 2012 (has links)
Due the difficulty of modeling the contribution of sediment delivery from linear erosions in a watershed, these are often overlooked in hydrosedimentological studies, however, may represent a significant portion of siltation. This project analyzes the contribution of a gully erosion in Santo Antonio do Aracanguá (SP) for the sedimentation of Ribeirão das Cruzes, a tributary of the UHE Three Brothers reservoir (Tietê River). The study was conducted from theoretical research (bibliographic research), data collection in the study area and through computer simulation. With the aid of GIS tools were quantified the silted volume in the tributary, determined by bathymetric survey (12.31 hm³) and the volume of eroded soil in the gully erosion by topography surveying (0.22 hm³). Comparing these results, we have obtained the contribution of 1.80% from linear erosion to the sedimentation in the tributary during the 21.12 years preceding the survey. However, due to estimative of the beginning and development of the gully erosion being associated with the last 7.11 years, the contribution to sedimentation in this period was 5.17%. The study also accused the deposit of sediment in the first 2 km downstream interface \"erosion-dam\". Linear erosions can contribute significantly in the process of sedimentation as shown in the study case, being necessary to consider this type of contribution in studies of sediment input into water bodies.

Assessment of diffuse pollution originating from estuarine historical landfills

O'Shea, Francis Timothy January 2016 (has links)
The UK contains 5000 unlined historical landfills in the coastal zone currently at risk of erosion within the next 50 years. These rely on natural attenuation in surrounding sediment to reduce the contaminant load to the environment. This thesis investigates the extent and magnitude of sediment metal contamination from historical estuarine landfills. An intensive investigation of Newlands historical landfill, Essex, indicated elevated metal concentrations in surface and sub-surface sediments. Surface sediment concentrations were similar to other industrially impacted estuaries, whilst peak metal concentrations at c. 50 cm depth were indicative of industrial activity in the mid-20th Century. Below this depth, sediments were enriched with Pb (EF > 2) and Zn (EF = 1.5) indicative of an historic leachate plume that extends c. 15 m from the landfill site boundary. These sediments present a secondary source of diffuse pollution and a site contamination load of c. 1200 kg Pb. In-situ XRF was demonstrated as a rapid contamination screening tool for Fe, Pb, Sr and Zn enabling a broad-scale investigation of historical landfills across SE England. Sediment cores from eight sites containing both hazardous and inert waste were screened. Concentrations and EFs of Pb and Zn at depth were significantly higher in hazardous sites compared to inert sites. Spatial distributions of Pb and Zn were comparable to Newlands historical landfill. This indicates that diffuse pollution from historical landfill sites with similar chemical and physical attributes to Newlands is likely to present a regional, if not national problem, with UK historical landfills presenting contaminated sediments, comprising a significant, previously unidentified and unquantified diffuse pollution source in the coastal zone.

The effect of evaporation and nutrient enrichment on the erodability of mudflats in a mesotidal estuary

Viggato, Tammy 22 January 2016 (has links)
Large areas of mesotidal estuaries become subaerial during low tide. Here we study the effect of nutrient enrichment and several meteorological and hydrodynamic parameters on the erodability of mudflat substrates when they are emergent. We tested the impact of nutrient fertilization on tidal flat sediments over a two week period in September 2011 in Plum Island Sound, Massachusetts (USA). High resolution measurements from our experiment indicate that daily nutrient enrichment at 70 μM NO3‾ using our experimental approach does not change the critical shear stress of the muddy substrate, nor affect the concentration of chlorophyll a at the surface. Sediment erodability is instead directly related to the potential evaporation rate and to the duration of the subaerial period. Chlorophyll a concentration decreases when evaporation is high, possibly due to the downward migration of diatoms. Sediment concentrations in the water column during submergence strongly depend on bottom shear stresses triggered by tidal currents. Surprisingly, they are also related to the total evaporation that occurred in the previous emergence period. We conclude that subaerial desiccation at low tide decreases the erodability of mudflat sediments. This strengthening effect is not lost during the following submerged period, thus limiting the erosive effect of tidal currents. For the first time we show that not only subaqueous but also subaerial processes control the erodability of mudflats. Global warming and other climatic variations regulating long-term evaporation rates can therefore directly affect the stability of mudflats in mesotidal environments.

Signals of nonlinear, multiscale and stochastic processes in coastal landscapes

Kearney, William Sheppard 05 February 2019 (has links)
Salt marshes are some of the most productive and valuable landscapes on earth, but they are vulnerable to the effects of sea-level rise, erosion and eutrophication. These processes act on a wide range of temporal and spatial scales, which complicate assessments of the health and stability of marsh ecosystems. High-frequency monitoring using in situ sensors captures the complete range of these dynamics, but extracting meaningful physical and ecological information from these signals requires process-based models coupled with statistical techniques. I develop and apply such methods to study two coastal landscapes, a coastal pine forest on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and a mesotidal salt marsh complex in the Plum Island Estuary, Massachusetts. Observations from groundwater wells in the Virginia pine forest indicate that storms are the dominant controls on the hydrology of the forest and that tidal influence is nonexistent. This forest exhibits a distinct spatial pattern in age structure in which young trees do not grow at low elevations. This pattern can be explained by a model that includes the interaction of sea-level rise, storms and the age-dependent variation in tree stress response, which predicts that the long-term evolution of the boundary is an ecological ratchet. Stresses due to sea-level rise slowly push the boundary at which young trees can survive upslope. Powerful storms then kill the mature, persistent forest at low elevations, which quickly pushes the forest boundary up to the regeneration boundary. Salt marshes need to accumulate sediment to replenish material lost as sea-level rises and creek banks erode. Fluxes of sediment can be monitored with simultaneous high-frequency observations of flow from acoustic Doppler current profilers and turbidity from optical backscattering sensors. I first investigate the relationship between water level and flow in marsh channels and develop predictive stage-discharge models to simplify the monitoring of fluxes. I then construct sediment budgets for eleven salt marshes in the Plum Island Estuary. The observed budgets depend strongly on the unique hydrodynamic conditions of each marsh channel. Variability in these conditions leads to the observed spatial and temporal variability in sediment fluxes from these marshes.

Avaliação de Metais e Elementos-Traço em Águas e Sedimentos das Bacias Hidrográficas dos Rios Mogi-Guaçu e Pardo, São Paulo / METALS AND TRACE ELEMENTS CONCENTRATION IN WATER AND SEDIMENTS OF THE HYDROGRAPHIC BASINS FROM MOGI-GUAÇU AND PARDO RIVERS IN THE STATE OF SÃO PAULO, BRAZIL

Lemes, Marcos José de Lima 30 March 2001 (has links)
The present work aimed to evaluate the environmental water and sediment quality in Mogi-Guaçu and Pardo Rivers Basins (São Paulo State), in the localities of water supply intake for the 13 cities in the basins. Metals and ions analysis of the water and sediment were performed according to methods to procedures described in Standard Methods for Examinations of Water and Wastewater, 17th edition. The hydrographic basins from Mogi-Guaçu and Pardo Rivers have a large agriculture influence on limnologic, physical and chemical characteristics and this area is unique in the State of São Paulo that the water catchment for supply is only surface and is used for water supply agriculture, public and industrial as well as far other uses, and it is also the recharge of Guarani's aquifer and it is one of huge aquifers in the world. In this study sampling was carried out at in a hydrological period, they were sampled bimonthly for 12 months (April 98/April 99) and analyzed: ions (F-, Cl-, SO42-, Na+, K+ and NH4+), nutrients (NO3- and PO43-) using the Ion Chromatographic technique, metals (Ag, Al, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, P, Pb and Zn) using the Inductively Coupled Plasma Optical Emission Spectrometric technique, organic carbon, using the Volumetric technique, for characterization of the sediments was used X Ray Fluorescence Spectrometric and X Ray Diffraction Spectrometric techniques in the 13 communities. During the catchment's period was gotten a large number of results. For it was used a computer software programs for descriptive, correlation and principal components analysis. The descriptive analyze was written Fe, Mn and Al getting down concentration after treatment water, the Mg, Co, P, Cu, Na and K elements still at same concentration after treatment concentration and, the Ca, F-, Cl- and SO42- elements getting upper concentration after treatment water. The interstitial phase showed 2 to 30 fold values than natural water. For supernatant and interstitial water, the most elements still at same concentration both phases, except for Al, Co and Cu that showed larger concentration on interstitial phase. The principal components analyze was written six factors: the first and second factors (Ba, Ca, Fe, Mn, Mg, Na, Co, Cu and P) suggest geological formation; the third factor (Cl-, SO42- e pluviometry) the possibility of an anthropogenic influence for natural water. For treatment water the software written 4 factors: the first and second factors (Mg, Ca, Ba, K+ and P) have the possibility to be associated to geological formation, and the third and fourth factor (F-, Cl- and NO3-) could be from used compounds at Water Treatment Station. The component principals analyze for supernatant and interstitial phases wrote three factors for both: the first factor (Mg, Ca, Mn and Fe) would be linkage to Granite-gneiss Complex, the second and third factor (Cu, Ba, P and Ni) suggest a linkage to metabasic and Poços de Caldas alkaline rocks. The sediment samples also were analyzed by principal components and were got five factors: the first, second and third (Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Cd Al, Ca e Ba, Fe, Co, Cu, Cd Al, Ca and Ba) factors suggests geological formation; the fourth factor (P) could be from Poços de Caldas Complex. This study didn't show the correlation among bioavailable metals with organic matter.

Stability of rivers flowing over non-cohesive alluvial beds.

Bernardino, José Carlos de Melo 16 September 2005 (has links)
The properly design of river improvements depends on the knowledge of the conditions under which a natural river becomes stable. This state of equilibrium is determined analytically if the number of equations is enough to describe the unknown system factors, called degrees of freedom. In an alluvial stream, it\'s possible to consider four degrees of freedom, they are: width, depth, channel slope and the variations in plan-form stream. This text presents some methods to evaluate the stability condition of a channel using empirical relationships, equations based on theoretical principles of Fluvial Hydraulics or both of these approaches in the same method.

Deep-Water Biogenic Sediment off the Coast of Florida

Unknown Date (has links)
Biogenic “oozes” are pelagic sediments that are composed of > 30% carbonate microfossils and are estimated to cover about 50% of the ocean floor, which accounts for about 67% of calcium carbonate in oceanic surface sediments worldwide. These deposits exhibit diverse assemblages of planktonic microfossils and contribute significantly to the overall sediment supply and function of Florida’s deep-water regions. However, the composition and distribution of biogenic sediment deposits along these regions remains poorly documented. Seafloor surface sediments have been collected in situ via Johnson- Sea-Link I submersible along four of Florida’s deep-water regions during a joint research cruise between Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute (HBOI) and Florida Atlantic University (FAU). Sedimentological analyses of the taxonomy, species diversity, and sedimentation dynamics reveal a complex interconnected development system of Florida’s deep-water habitats. Results disclose characteristic microfossil assemblages of planktonic foraminiferal ooze off the South West Florida Shelf, a foraminiferal-pteropod ooze through the Straits of Florida, and pteropod ooze deposits off Florida’s east coast. The distribution of the biogenic ooze deposits is attributed to factors such as oceanographic surface production, surface and bottom currents, off-bank transport, and deep-water sediment drifts. The application of micropaleontology, sedimentology, and oceanography facilitate in characterizing the sediment supply to Florida’s deep-water regions. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.S.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Aplicação da tríade de qualidade do sedimento em análise espacial no reservatório do Guarapiranga (SP, Brasil) / Sediment quality triad approach applied to Guarapiranga reservoir (SP, Brazil) in a spatial analysis

Fernanda Lage 14 August 2013 (has links)
With the purpose to know the history of the benthic community in Guarapiranga reservoir for future study about the influence of different sources of pollution in the reservoir over zoobenthos, this study was conducted to collect historical data of benthic fauna and variation in community structure. Four studies conducted during winter in four regions of the reservoir medium-profundal (Guarapiranga, Embu-Mirim, Embu-Guaçu and Parelheiros) over the years, 1939, 1976, 1996 and 2010 were analysed. The best richness of data presented in the works reflected the evolution of knowledge in limnological studies, in Brazil and worldwide. The density of Oligochaeta had an increase over the years as well as the Chaoboridae. On the other hand, Chironomidae presented 30% in the 70\' community and was not representative anymore in 2010. The environment showed strong organic enrichment for all regions along the years, and this has contributed to a greater diversity of detritivorous groups (Tubificinae and Naidinae - Oligochaeta), for example. The dissolved oxygen levels at the bottom declined over the years in all regions. Attention is called to the necessity of biomonitoring in 4 regions of the reservoir, using benthic macroinvertebrates and physical and chemical sediment analyses and the adoption of a new way of managing this system
