The presentation of self

Unknown Date (has links)
Curious to understand my fascination with and attraction to certain individuals who live and work in urban, often economically disadvantaged environments, my thesis exhibition explores properties of paint and image to develop a personal and compelling visual vocabulary that communicates as well as celebrates the strength, power, confidence and swag of these individuals. This work investigates the "face" people front in public in order to survive their situations. Representing individuals within my own community in Miami, these portraits help me come to terms with the way I too have adopted and performed identities of survival. Additionally, I want this work to make visual record of these compelling individuals rarely acknowledged within the history of art. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.F.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2014.. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Image of the Basileus : the common character of royal self-presentation in the early Hellenistic world (323-276 BC)

Holton, John Russell January 2014 (has links)
This thesis argues for a common character of royal self-presentation in the early Hellenistic world, defined in this thesis as the period between the death of Alexander in 323 BC and the accession of Antigonos Gonatas in 276. In contrast to current models of interpretation which analyse it on a predominantly regional or biographical basis, this thesis supports the validity of approaching Hellenistic kingship as a broader phenomenon. Royal self-presentation is defined here as imagery developed by the kings, ideology articulated by them, and symbolic deeds enacted by them. This thesis engages a distinction between local and international perspectives and a wide interdisciplinary view of the surviving evidence in order to demonstrate the common character of early Hellenistic royal self-presentation. This common character is in turn unified by a dominant Greco-Macedonian emphasis: accordingly, it is termed ‘the image of the basileus’ in this thesis. This ‘image of the basileus’ is a composite construction based on six themes of royal self-presentation, each of which is analysed and discussed in a separate chapter; their total character is adduced fully in the final conclusion to this thesis. Chapter 1 covers heroic themes in royal self-presentation, which scholars have generally overlooked in reference to the early Hellenistic kings despite their commonality and significance. Chapter 2 covers the diadem, which became the symbol of Hellenistic kingship par excellence and as such is of pivotal importance to this study. Chapter 3 covers the concept of spear-won land and the foundation of eponymous cities, which can be understood together as part of an image of territorial domination. Chapter 4 covers representations of divine favour and divine will, a crucial basis of support for the early Hellenistic kings. Chapter 5 covers joint kingship and father-son rule, an innovation in the structuring of royal power and thus a vital focus for this thesis. Chapter 6, the final chapter of this thesis, covers common imagery in the funerals of the kings, which is important as a summation of their self-presentation.

Arameshi, Rojin January 2018 (has links)
Social media is a part of many people’s everyday today, especially to share personal events. So... this is how you look on Tinder : A quantitative study about how young adults in Sweden self-present themselves on Tinder.

Pettersson, Emelie, Lindström, Warat January 2019 (has links)
The purpose of this study is to analyze how young adult self-present themselves on Tinder and the relationship between user’s self-presentation and gender to investigate if there are differences. While there are plenty of research connected to self-presentation and online dating, most of them were conducted on English speaking dating sites. Since Tinder is a location-based application, the aim of this study is to investigate how Swedish users self-present themselves on Tinder. This study also focuses on variables that have not had much attention when it comes to dating environment but is related to self-presentation (social interaction, taste, personality trait etc.). This essay is addressing the following questions: 1. How do young adults self-present on the dating app tinder? 2. Are there gender differences in how tinder user self-present themselves? To explore and answer the topic, we use a quantitative content analysis approach to examine the photographs, textual description and connections to third party applications in each individual profile. The sample of this study were Tinder users located near Karlstad, Sweden with a approximate range of 161 km. This study analyzed two hundred individual profiles were whereof one hundred are men and respectively women between the age of 18 - 24 as it is the most active age range according to a study conducted in the US. We analyze the variables gaze, dress, social interaction in the photographs. In the textual description the variables hobbies or interests, professions, taste, height, emojis, partner preference and personality trait were analyzed. In the analysis of the results, there were a significant difference between gaze and dress related to gender in the photographs as expected from previous studies. There was surprisingly no significant difference in how men and women present themselves in the textual description although there are difference between them. The analysis and discussion with a reflection to previous study results shows that there is a gendered self-presentation and that gender stereotypes still exists on Tinder. The results serves as a groundwork for future research regarding self-presentation in online dating environment.

Exercising the self : On the Role of Exercise, Gender and Culture in Physical Self-Perceptions

Lindwall, Magnus January 2004 (has links)
In modern society, individuals constantly pass judgments on their own body and physical competence as well as that of other people. All too often, the verdict is less favourable. For the person, these physical self-perceptions (PSP) may negatively affect global self-esteem, identity, and general mental well being. The overall aim of this thesis is to examine primarily the role that exercise, but also the roles that gender and culture, play in the formation of PSP. In Study I, using confirmatory factor analyses, strong support for the validity of a first-order, and a second-order hierarchical and multidimensional model of the Physical Self-Perception Profile (PSPP: Fox & Corbin, 1989) was found across three national samples (Great Britain, Sweden and Turkey) of university students. Cross-cultural differences were detected, with the British sample demonstrating higher latent means on all PSPP subdomains except for the physical condition subdomain (Condition), than the Swedish and Turkish samples. In Study II, a higher self-reported exercise frequency was associated with more positive PSP (in particular for Condition) and more importance attributed to PSP in Swedish university students. Males demonstrated higher overall PSPP-scores than females. In Study III, a true-experimental design with randomisation into an intervention and a control group was adopted. Strong support for the effects of an empowerment-based exercise intervention programme on PSP and social physique anxiety (SPA) over six months for adolescent girls was found. The relations of exercise, gender and culture with PSP, SPA and self-esteem are discussed from the standpoints of a variety of theoretical models (the EXSEM-model), and frameworks (self-presentation and objectification theory). The two theories of self-enhancement and skill-development are examined with regard to the direction of the exercise-physical self relationship and motivation for exercise. Arguments for the relevance of exercise and PSP for practitioners in promoting general mental well-being and preventing modern-day diseases are outlined.

Seeking Personal Autonomy Through the Use of Facebook in Iran

Hajin, Mona January 2013 (has links)
In Iran, where males and females are kept separated in different spheres, Facebook may be used as an opportunity to bridge this gap between the genders. However, this study showed that Facebook, as a nonymous platform in which people are in contact with their already-made social ties, didn’t seem to be liberating from the existing norms and rules within society. Facebook was a stage that became restricted with the involvement of social ties. The study’s analysis of interviews with six young Iranians showed that social meanings and norms of self-presentation on Facebook are defined to a large degree in terms of gender. The informants used a variety of strategies when presenting themselves on Facebook. They used Facebook simply for gaining personal autonomy. Strategies were adopted especially when one’s personal and community needs were in conflict. Efforts made to apply strategies were gendered and were used mainly by females. Males conformed to and women resisted societal norms and expectations.
