The validation of two social desirability questionnaires in the South African context / Ebenhaezer Coetzee

Coetzee, Ebenhaezer January 2015 (has links)
Respond bias has always been a risk when it comes to interpreting personality data. For this reason two social desirability measures were created to combat this problem during research and workplace application. The first of these measures is the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale created to measure a need for approval. The second of these measures is Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding, which stems from a theory that describes social desirability as both a deception towards others and towards the self. For either of these measures to be usable, however, they need to be reliable and valid. This study then is intended to validate these two instruments in a diverse South African population sample and to look at the reliability of the items in these instruments and their factor structure. The objective of this study was to investigate both of these measures and to determine their psychometric properties and how they compare to the theory in literature. A convenient and purposive sample of N = 359 individuals from across South Africa was contacted via electronic means and asked to partake in this study. A questionnaire survey was forwarded to them with the intention of measuring social desirability. This included both the Marlowe-Crowne Social Desirability Scale (MCSDS) and Balanced Inventory of Desirable Responding (BIDR) measure. In addition a demographical questionnaire was included (gender, race, language group and age). The statistical analysis was done via the SPSS program during data examination: descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis (with Maximum Likelihood as extraction method), Cronbach’s alpha coefficients, and product-moment correlations were conducted. The results of this analysis indicated that although these measures are widely accepted and used internationally, the full version of both the measures is not valid and reliable within this South African sample. Although not all items from the scales could be validated, there were items that indicated very acceptable psychometric properties. Various recommendations were made for the context of using these measures to ascertain an individual’s response bias and for future research. A person attempting to use these measures should only focus on using the reliable items from this study. These items could be applied in developing a shortened version of these measures. It is recommended that further research into these measures could be done by using a traditional paper-and pencil format, a larger sample or by focusing on a specific population group within South Africa. / MCom (Industrial Psychology), North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2015

Lessard, Julie 03 1900 (has links)
The purpose of this thesis was to examine various measures of parenting practices and their ability to account for these practices. The instrument’s sensitivity to changes following a parent training program is also examined while taking into account potential moderators of treatment response. Two studies constitute the body of this thesis. The first study compared two parenting practices questionnaire on the basis of empirical data. The Parenting Practices Interview (PPI) is a self-report questionnaire for 3 to 8-year old children used to evaluate changes in parenting practices following a parent training program (PTP). The Alabama Parenting Questionnaire (APQ) is a self-report questionnaire for school-age children that has been used for multiple research purposes. One hundred and twenty parents completed both the PPI and APQ. Correlation analyses, principal component analysis and canonical correlations were performed, with results indicating that the PPI and APQ measure similar parenting practices. Only a few scales from the PPI were not measured by the APQ and represented additional content. Because both measures cover the same parenting practices aspects equally well, choice of questionnaire should be based on purpose of study, practicality and age of children. The second study examined changes in parenting practices following a parent training program for families of school-age children diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Changes were examined with an observational measure specifically created for this project. Seventy-seven families were assigned to either the Incredible Years parent training program (PTP), a support phone call group (SPC), or to a community services (C) control group. Parenting practices were assessed before and after the intervention through direct observations. Results showed that parents in the PTP group reduced the percentage of harsh/negative parenting practices and increased the percentage of positive parenting practices used following the intervention while parents from the other two groups did not change. In addition, ADHD subtypes, comorbidity and cumulative risks based on parent’s characteristics did not moderate treatment response. Findings from this study show that the new observational measure is sensitive enough to detect changes following a PTP and also indicate that a parent training program is a valuable intervention for families of school-age children diagnosed with ADHD.

"UNDERSTANDING HUMAN VALUES IS A NEVER-ENDING PROCESS": CHALLENGES IN VALUES MEASUREMENT

DANIONI, FRANCESCA VITTORIA 02 April 2019 (has links)
The general aim of the present research project was to reflect on the measurement of values in the field of psychosocial sciences. According to Schwartz’s Theory, values are defined as desirable and trans-situational goals that serve as guiding principles in people's life to select modes, means, and actions. They have been mainly investigated using self-report instruments to gather quantitative data. However, respondents’ answers on these measures may be influenced by different response biases, such as for example socially desirable responding, or may depend on respondents’ tendency to introspection. This is mainly because values are by definition what is desirable, and they are abstract concepts. Based on this Chapters 1 and 2 theoretically and empirically deal with the available self-report measures of values and with the possible biases which are likely to influence respondents’ answers. Chapters 3 to 6 consider instead a recent trend in the field of values measurement, which is the possibility of studying values adopting an implicit social cognition perspective, that is using indirect measures to gain knowledge on the topic. Two indirect measures aimed at measuring values, namely the Values Implicit Association Test and the Values Lexical Decision Task, are here developed and considered in terms of their relations with self-report measures of values and with behavioural outcomes.

Correlational Analysis of Drivers Personality Traits and Styles in a Distributed Simulated Driving Environment

Abbas, Muhammad Hassan, Khan, Mati-ur-Rehman January 2007 (has links)
In this thesis report we conducted research study on driver's behavior in T-Intersections using simulated environment. This report describes and discusses correlation analysis of driver's personality traits and style while driving at T-Intersections. The experiments were performed on multi user driving simulator under controlled settings, at Linköping University. A total of forty-eight people participated in the study and were divided into groups of four, all driving in the same simulated world. During the experiments participants were asked to fill a series of well-known self-report questionnaires. We evaluated questionnaires to get the insight in driver's personality traits and driving style. The self-report questionnaires consist of Schwartz's configural model of 10 values types and NEO-five factor inventory. Also driver's behavior was studied with the help of questionnaires based on driver's behavior, style, conflict avoidance, time horizon and tolerance of uncertainty. Then these 10 Schwartz's values are correlated with the other questionnaires to give the detail insight of the driving habits and personality traits of the drivers.

Working out with F.I.D.O. (Frequency, Intensity, Duration, & Outcomes) - a feasibility randomized controlled trial

Lim, Kah Aeng Clarise 18 August 2017 (has links)
Objective: Dog owners have been shown to walk more per week compared to non-dog owners; however, 60% of dog owners are still not walking their dogs at intensities sufficient to reap optimal health benefits. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy of a 9-week feasibility randomized controlled trial involving a program of six weekly scheduled instructor-led group dog walks supplemented with theory-based strategies to encourage increased dog walking among dog owners in Greater Victoria, BC. Methods: This study was based on the multi-process action control (M-PAC) framework and utilized an open parallel randomized controlled trial design involving experimental and waitlist-control group participants. Quantitative data was collected using pedometers and self-report measures. A program evaluation survey was administered upon the completion of the study. Primary outcomes examined the feasibility and acceptability of the program; secondary outcomes analyzed pedometry and self-report moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) data; and tertiary outcomes observed changes in participants’ perceptions of M-PAC constructs. Percentage calculations were used to obtain primary outcomes, and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA; controlling for baseline) was performed to examine secondary and tertiary outcomes to explore the direction of effects and obtain a first estimate of expected effect sizes. Eligibility: Male and female adults aged 18+ living in Greater Victoria, BC, who owned at least one healthy and friendly dog aged six months and above, who were not meeting recommended guidelines of 150 minutes of MVPA per week, and who were medically cleared to participate. Results: Feasibility outcomes included 74 interested responses, 23% recruitment rate (n = 17), 94% retention rate (n = 16), and 94% adherence rate (n = 15). Program participants were overall (very) satisfied with the program – worksheets (62.5%), program instructor (100%), various program/group dog walks logistics (75% to 100%). Total weekly step counts and average daily step counts, MVPA dog walking, and MVPA with dog increased at the end of the program and at follow-up, resulting in large effect sizes when compared to the waitlist-control group. MVPA dog walking and total MVPA (with and without dog) exceeded recommended guidelines at follow-up. Positive changes across time were observed for dog responsibility and M-PAC constructs of affective judgments, opportunity, planning, identity, and habit, resulting in medium and large effect sizes when compared to the waitlist-control group. Conclusions: This six-week group dog walking program is overall feasible, acceptable, and efficacious in encouraging increased dog walking and MVPA among dog owners. Attendance at weekly scheduled instructor-led group dog walks and exposure to the M-PAC construct worksheets resulted in program participants’ adoption and maintenance of positive behavioral changes at the end of the program and at follow- up. Program participants reported enjoying the program and being (very) satisfied with it. It is recommended for future studies to refine/modify initial recruitment strategies and eligibility criteria, reimburse medical/veterinarian clearance costs to reduce cost-related barriers to participation, offer a variety of options for program delivery (e.g., different locations/schedules/seasons, online programs, multi-site study) to accommodate more participants, and apply the M-PAC framework to a larger sample. / Graduate

Larouche Wilson, Alexa 09 1900 (has links)
Thèse de doctorat présenté en vue de l'obtention du doctorat en psychologie - recherche intervention, option psychologie clinique (Ph.D) / Evaluating treatment programs specialized in treating sexual offenders and reducing recidivism, especially sexual recidivism, is of great importance to the general public and policy makers because of the many physical and psychological consequences these crimes have on the victims and their families. The present study evaluated the changes that occurred in moderate to high risk sexual offenders who followed a specialized community treatment program. In order to accomplish this, gains during treatment and their ability to predict lower recidivism rates was examined using three different methods of measurement: risk assessment, self-reports, and phallometric testing. Change scores were derived from the Stable-2007 and its three dimensions (i.e., antisociality, sexual deviance, and hypersexuality); the Molest and Rape Scale; the Sexual Interest Cardsort Questionnaire; and phallometric testing. Measures were administered pre- and posttreatment in a sample of 105 adult male sexual offenders with adult and child victims. Recidivism data were obtained from official criminal records. The average follow-up period for participants was of 12 years postrelease. Findings were indicative of significant positive changes in dynamic risk factors as measured by the Stable-2007 and its three dimensions; in PSIs as measured by the Sexual Interest Cardsort Questionnaire and phallometric testing; but not in cognitive distortions as measured by the Molest and Rape Scale. The majority of change scores were non significantly associated with reductions in sexual, violent, or general recidivism after controlling for pretreatment and static risk. Comparing the different methods of measurement in their ability to capture changes and predict recidivism was unable to be done due to the lack of significant results. The following study is only the second to examine treatment change on the Stable-2007 and its relationship to recidivism, and the first examining treatment change in its three different dimensions. Although the program seemed to be effective in reducing certain dynamic risk factors, the relationships between treatment change and lower recidivism rates, especially sexual recidivism remains unclear. More studies examining treatment change on specific dynamic risk factors using different measures are needed to establish more comprehensive conclusions about which dynamic risk factors are more susceptible to change and most effective if reducing recidivism rates.
