Shear cracks in concrete structures subjected to in-plane stresses

After only two years of service, extensive cracking was found in the webs of two light-rail commuter line bridges in Stockholm, the Gröndal and Alvik bridges. Due to this incident it was found necessary to study the means available for analysing shear cracking in concrete structures subjected to in-plane stresses. The aim of this PhD project is to study shear cracking with these two bridges as reference. In this thesis, the first part aims to study the possibility of using finite element analysis as a tool for predicting shear cracking for plane state stresses. The second part is concerning how the shear cracks are treated in the concrete design standards. Shear cracking in reinforced beams has been studied with non-linear finite element analyses. In these analyses the shear cracking behaviour was compared to experiments conducted to analyse the shear failure behaviour. Finite element analyses were performed with two different FE programs Abaqus and Atena. The material model used in Atena is a smeared crack model based on damage and fracture theory with either fixed or rotated crack direction. The material model used in Abaqus is based on plasticity and damage theory. The fixed crack model in Atena and the model in Abaqus gave good results for all studied beams. For the two studied deep beams with flanges the results from the rotated crack model were almost the same as obtained with the fixed crack model. The rotated crack model in Atena gave though for some beams a rather poor estimation of the behaviour. The calculation of crack widths of shear cracks has been studied for the long-term load case in the serviceability state for the Gröndal and Alvik bridges, with the means available in the design standards. The methods based on the crack direction corresponding to the principal stress and do not include the effect of aggregate interlocking seems to be too conservative. Two of the studied methods included the effect of aggregate interlocking, it was made either by introducing stresses in the crack plane or implicitly by changing the direction of the crack so that it no longer coincide with the direction of principal stress. For calculations based on probable load conditions, these methods gave estimations of the crack widths that were close to the ones observed at the bridges. Continuous measurements of cracks at the Gröndal and the Alvik bridges have also been included. Monitoring revealed that the strengthening work with post-tensioned tendons has, so far, been successful. It also revealed that the crack width variations after strengthening are mainly temperature dependent where the daily temperature variation creates movements ten times greater than those from a passing light-rail vehicle. Monitoring a crack between the top flange and the webs on the Gröndal Bridge showed that the top flange was moving in a longitudinal direction relative to the web until the strengthening was completed. The crack widths in the sections strengthened solely by carbon fibre laminates seem to increase due to long-term effects. / QC 20101119

Finite Element Modeling for Prediction of Low Frequency Floor Vibrations Due to Walking

Floor vibration serviceability is a primary design consideration for steel framed floors. Designers in North America typically use the AISC Design Guide 11 methods to check this limit state, but its methods are difficult to apply to atypical floor framing. Finite element analysis is a logical choice for predicting vibration response to walking, but simplified designer-friendly procedures are not available. Three relatively simple, experimentally verified methods of predicting low frequency floor vibration due to walking are presented in this dissertation. The methods are based on finite element analysis of the floor system, are applicable to a wide range of situations, and are intended to be no more complicated than is justified by the current ability to predict modal properties. The first method is to predict the acceleration response using response history analysis with individual footstep forces as the loading function. The second method also uses response history analysis to predict the acceleration waveform, but with a Fourier series representation of the load. The third method is a simplified frequency domain method in which the predicted accelerance frequency response function is used to predict the steady-state response to walking which is reduced to account for incomplete resonant build-up. A two year experimental program including three laboratory specimens, a four bay full-scale mockup, and two steel-framed building floors, was completed at Virginia Tech. These floor systems represent a wide cross-section of the steel framed floor systems used in North America. Modal tests were performed using an electrodynamic shaker and experimental modal analysis techniques were used to estimate the modal properties: natural frequencies, mode shapes, and damping ratios. Responses to walking excitation were measured several times in each tested bay for individuals walking at subharmonics of natural frequencies. During each test, the walker crossed the middle of the bay using a metronome to help maintain the intended cadence. The test with maximum response represents the maximum peak acceleration that can be reasonably expected to occur due to a single walker. The proposed methods were used, with measured damping ratios and walker weights, to predict the modal properties and responses to walking for comparison with measured values. The methods were found to be reasonably accurate, contain significant data dispersion, and be on the conservative side. The results of these comparisons were used to develop design recommendations, including reduction factors to account for the conservatism. The design methods were used to predict the modal properties and responses to walking in a "blind" manner using only information that would be available to a designer. Comparisons of measurements and predictions were used to determine the accuracy of the proposed prediction methods, which were found to be sufficiently accurate for design usage. / Ph. D.

Serviceability performance of steel-concrete composite beams

Yes / For composite beams with low degrees of shear connection, additional deflections occur due to slip in the shear connectors, which can be significant for beams with low degrees of shear connection. A design formula is presented for the effective stiffness of composite beams taking account of the stiffness of the shear connectors, which is compared to measured deflections of 6 symmetric beams and an 11m span composite beam of asymmetric profile. It is shown that the comparison is good when using a shear connector stiffness of 70 kN/mm for single shear connectors and 100 kN/mm for pairs of shear connectors per deck rib. Results of push tests on a range of deck profiles confirm these initial elastic stiffnesses. To ensure that the slip at the serviceability limit state does not lead to permanent deformations of the beam, it is proposed that the minimum degree of shear connection should not fall below 30% for un-propped beams and 40% for propped beams of symmetric cross-section. / European Commission

Design of reinforced concrete deep beams for strength and serviceability

Several reinforced concrete bent caps (deep beams) in Texas have developed significant diagonal cracks in service. The cracking in two bent caps was so extensive that costly retrofits were implemented to strengthen the structures. Strut-and-tie modeling is currently recommended in most U.S. design specifications for the design of reinforced concrete bent caps and deep beams. Designers have expressed concerns with the lack of clarity and serviceability-related considerations in strut-and-tie model design provisions. Due to concerns with strut-and-tie modeling design provisions and field problems of in-service bent caps, TxDOT Project 5253 was funded. Several tasks conducted within Project 5253 are addressed in this dissertation. The effects of minimum web reinforcement and member depth on the strength and serviceability behavior of deep beams are presented. The transition between deep beam shear capacity and sectional shear capacity near a shear-span-to-depth (a/d) ratio of 2 is addressed. A service-load shear check to limit diagonal cracking in service is outlined. Lastly, a simple chart that correlates the maximum width of diagonal cracks in a deep beam to its residual capacity is developed. To accomplish the objectives of Project 5253, thirty-seven tests were conducted on reinforced concrete beams with the following cross-sectional dimensions: 21”x23”, 21”x42”, 21”x44”, 21”x75”, and 36”x48.” The specimens were loaded with a/d ratios of 1.2, 1.85, and 2.5. The test specimens are among the largest reinforced concrete deep beams in the literature. To supplement the findings of the experimental program, a database of deep beam test results was compiled. Entries in the database that lacked sufficient information and that did not meet established cross-sectional size or web reinforcement criteria were filtered from the database. The use of the database in conjunction with the experimental program enabled each objective to be addressed from both broad and specific viewpoints. Several recommendations for improving the strength and serviceability design of deep beams are presented including a minimum web reinforcement requirement, provisions to ease the transition between calculated deep beam and sectional shear capacity, and a design check to limit diagonal cracking in service. / text

O presente trabalho estuda de maneira crítica os conceitos necessários para o suporte do planejamento de sistemas de Gerenciamento de Facilidades em edificações produtivas, a partir do entendimento sistêmico do edifício dentro do contexto maior da organização e do meio ambiente em que está inserido, objetivando a utilização produtiva do ambiente de trabalho através do oferecimento de suporte adequado aos diversos usuários do edifício. Os elementos que possibilitam este entendimento, bem como os meios necessários para atingir os objetivos propostos, são analisados em níveis estratégico e tático, contemplando questões como sustentabilidade, funcionalidade, servibilidade, gerenciabilidade e mantenabilidade do edifício e de seus sistemas, visando a obtenção de efetividade de custos operacionais conjuntamente com oferecimento de qualidade de vida no trabalho. O Gerenciamento de Facilidades, assim entendido, representa a resposta adequada para as necessidades de transição dos modelos gerenciais até então utilizados para a operação e manutenção do edifício e seus sistemas, de maneira a poder enfrentar os novos desafios impostos pela sociedade pós-industrial. / The following work analyzes the key concepts, from a critical point of view, involved in planning facilities management support systems in productive buildings, through a systemic approach that considers buildings in their organizational and environmental contexts. This aims at productively using the work space environment through proper support being offered the building’s many different users. Both the elements that make this understanding possible and the means needed to achieve the proposed goals are analyzed according to strategic and tactical levels, including concepts such as sustainability, functionality, serviceability, manageability e maintainability of the building and its systems, to obtain operational costs effectiveness along with the quality of life being offered in work space environment. Management Facilities, understood as such, leads to a suitable answer for transitional adjustments required in managerial models employed so far for operating and maintaining the building and its systems, so that the new challenges posed by a post-industrial society may be faced.

Dynamic behaviour of dowel-type connections under in-service vibration

This study investigated the vibration serviceability of timber structures with dowel-type connections. It addressed the use of such connections in cutting-edge timber structures such as multi-storey buildings and long-span bridges, in which the light weight and flexibility of the structure make it possible that vibration induced by dynamic forces such as wind or footfall may cause discomfort to occupants or users of the structure, or otherwise impair its intended use. The nature of the oscillating force imposed on connections by this form of vibration was defined based on literature review and the use of established mathematical models. This allowed the appropriate cyclic load to be applied in experimental work on the most basic component of a dowel-type connection: a steel dowel embedding into a block of timber. A model for the stiffness of the timber in embedment under this cyclic load was developed based on an elastic stress function, which could then be used as the basis of a model for a complete connector. Nonlinear and time-dependent behaviour was also observed in embedment, and a simple rheological model incorporating elastic, viscoelastic and plastic elements was fitted to the measured response to cyclic load. Observations of the embedment response of the timber were then used to explain features of the behaviour of complete single- and multiple-dowel connections under cyclic load representative of in-service vibration. Complete portal frames and cantilever beams were tested under cyclic load, and a design method was derived for predicting the stiffness of such structures, using analytical equations based on the model for embedment behaviour. In each cyclic load test the energy dissipation in the specimen, which contributes to the damping in a complete structure, was measured. The analytical model was used to predict frictional energy dissipation in embedment, which was shown to make a significant contribution to damping in single-dowel connections. Based on the experimental results and analysis, several defining aspects of the dynamic response of the complete structures, such as a reduction of natural frequency with increased amplitude of applied load, were related to the observed and modelled embedment behaviour of the connections.

Des méthodes de calculs et des concepts de sécurité existent pour ces systèmes combinés, notamment en France où le module pressiométrique mesuré et les recommandations ASIRI (IREX 2012) pour les inclusions rigides sont utilisés. Le dimensionnement classique des pieux basé sur une simple vérification de la portance des colonnes isolées ne peut pas être appliqué à ces systèmes combinés. Les tassements peuvent être plus importants du fait de la part significative de charge reprise par le sol. Le présent travail est une contribution au développement des méthodes de calcul et de dimensionnement en déplacement (préconisé par l'Eurocode 7, EN 1997-1 2004) pour les systèmes combinés sous charge verticale, en particulier au niveau international où des mesures in situ de module de sol ne sont généralement pas disponibles. Les éventuelles particularités de ces systèmes, notamment la sensibilité de colonnes non renforcées de petit diamètre, devaient également être examinées. La méthode de transfert de charge (“load transfer method”, LTM) est identifiée comme un outil d'ingénieur particulièrement adapté au calcul des systèmes combinés présentant une géométrie relativement simple. L'interaction sol-colonne en frottement et en pointe est définie par des courbes de transfert de charge (ou courbes “t-z” et “q-z”). Les méthodes en milieu continu comme la méthode des éléments finis sont à réserver en général aux cas complexes. Le comportement non-linéaire des semelles est examiné sur la base de mesures obtenues dans la littérature. Cette étude aboutit à la proposition d'une courbe charge-tassement hyperbolique pour les semelles. Cette courbe de mobilisation est définie de sorte qu'il y ait concordance avec la méthode linéaire habituelle pour un tiers de la charge ultime de la semelle. Le comportement de pieux isolés est étudié avec de nombreux essais de chargement instrumentés et non-instrumentés pour différents types de pieux et de sol. Une alternative aux courbes de transfert de charge selon Frank et Zhao (1982), basées sur le module pressiométrique, est recherchée. Des courbes de transfert de charge de type racine cubique et hyperbolique sont proposées pour tous types de pieux et de sol. La raideur des courbes proposées dépend d'une bonne estimation des valeurs ultimes de frottement et de résistance de pointe. Au contraire, la raideur initiale des courbes de Frank et Zhao est entièrement définie par le module pressiométrique, ce qui permet d'éviter des erreurs en termes de raideur. Les courbes de mobilisation proposées pour les fondations superficielles et pour les pieux sont combinées et étendues au cas des systèmes combinés. Cette méthode est implémentée comme option LTM dans le programme KID (Keller company 2015). Les prévisions avec le modèle proposé sont en très bonne adéquation avec les mesures effectuées sur 3 sites documentés dans la littérature. Une étude paramétrique montre une transition continue entre la fondation mixte et les inclusions rigides et une possibilité d'optimisation avec une diminution significative des efforts dans les colonnes et dans la fondation superficielle si un matelas est utilisé. En complément, une comparaison avec des calculs en éléments finis en 3D dans un cas théorique de semelle sur colonnes confirme que la méthode de transfert de charge développée est très performante pour des géométries simples. Continuum methods like the finite element method should be preferred only for complex cases in general. The non-linear load-settlement behaviour of single footings up to failure is analysed based on measurements given in the literature. This yields the proposal of a hyperbolic load-settlement curve for footings. This mobilization curve is defined in a way to match the linear usual method for one third of the footing ultimate load. The behaviour of single piles is investigated based on numerous available instrumented and non-instrumented pile load tests with different pile and soil types. A reliable alternative to the load transfer curves after Frank and Zhao (1982), which are based on the pressuremeter modulus, is sought. Cubic root and hyperbolic axial load transfer curves are proposed for all pile and ground types. The stiffness accuracy of the proposed curves depends on an accurate estimation of the ultimate skin friction and tip resistance values. On the contrary, the initial stiffness of the Frank and Zhao curves is fully described by the pressuremeter modulus, avoiding thus errors in the stiffness. The proposed mobilization curves for the shallow and pile foundation behaviours are combined and extended for all combined systems. The proposed method is implemented as the LTM option into the software KID (Keller company 2015). The prediction with the developed model matches very well the measurements made for 3 different cases from the literature. A parametric study shows a smooth transition between the combined pile-raft foundation case and the rigid inclusion case and a potential for optimisation with a significant reduction of the internal forces in the columns and in the rigid slab when a load transfer platform is used. In addition, a comparison with 3D finite element calculations for a theoretical footing case with columns confirms that the developed load transfer method is very reliable for simple geometries. Sensitivity investigations using the axisymmetric and 3D finite element method with Plaxis (2013, 2014) are performed. Geometrical imperfections impact mainly the structural integrity of small-diameter unreinforced columns. However, these effects are reduced in combined systems compared to the single column case due to the possibility of redistribution of the loads within the system

O presente trabalho estuda de maneira crítica os conceitos necessários para o suporte do planejamento de sistemas de Gerenciamento de Facilidades em edificações produtivas, a partir do entendimento sistêmico do edifício dentro do contexto maior da organização e do meio ambiente em que está inserido, objetivando a utilização produtiva do ambiente de trabalho através do oferecimento de suporte adequado aos diversos usuários do edifício. Os elementos que possibilitam este entendimento, bem como os meios necessários para atingir os objetivos propostos, são analisados em níveis estratégico e tático, contemplando questões como sustentabilidade, funcionalidade, servibilidade, gerenciabilidade e mantenabilidade do edifício e de seus sistemas, visando a obtenção de efetividade de custos operacionais conjuntamente com oferecimento de qualidade de vida no trabalho. O Gerenciamento de Facilidades, assim entendido, representa a resposta adequada para as necessidades de transição dos modelos gerenciais até então utilizados para a operação e manutenção do edifício e seus sistemas, de maneira a poder enfrentar os novos desafios impostos pela sociedade pós-industrial. / The following work analyzes the key concepts, from a critical point of view, involved in planning facilities management support systems in productive buildings, through a systemic approach that considers buildings in their organizational and environmental contexts. This aims at productively using the work space environment through proper support being offered the building’s many different users. Both the elements that make this understanding possible and the means needed to achieve the proposed goals are analyzed according to strategic and tactical levels, including concepts such as sustainability, functionality, serviceability, manageability e maintainability of the building and its systems, to obtain operational costs effectiveness along with the quality of life being offered in work space environment. Management Facilities, understood as such, leads to a suitable answer for transitional adjustments required in managerial models employed so far for operating and maintaining the building and its systems, so that the new challenges posed by a post-industrial society may be faced.
