The formation of cliques in collectivities as a consequence of initial distributions of dimensions of wealth

Foddy, William Henry January 1972 (has links)
Past approaches to the understanding of the occurrence of exchange Interactions and the generation of sentiments of social approval and social disapproval within collectivities are reviewed and a new theory is formulated. The new theory focuses on initial, unequal distributions of dimensions of wealth within the collectivities . On the basis of knowledge about the differences between the members' net wealth levels, four hypotheses regarding the patterns of exchange interactions in the collectivities are derived for testing. These hypotheses concern: ( i ) the emergence, and order of emergence, of cliques within the collectivities, and ( i i ) the generation of sentiments of approval between fellow clique members and sentiments of disapproval between the members of the different cliques in each collectivity. An experimental paradigm is then described and the results of actual, laboratory experiments presented. It is concluded that all four hypotheses are supported by the data. Finally, the theory is placed within the wider context of the sociology of social stratification in general. / Arts, Faculty of / Anthropology, Department of / Graduate

Among the location theories that geographers have devised in the past thirty years, the most influential has probably been Walter Christaller'd Central Place Theory (11, 12, 27). Its main point is that a certain amount of productive land supports an urban center, and the center exists because essential services must be performed for the surrounding land (25:203). Theoretically, a hierarchy of such centers exists, ranging from hamlets to metropolises with their distribution throughout a region following an hexagonal pattern. Many of Christaller's basic premises have been subatantiated by the work of numerous geographers (11, 25:203). Most of these works, however, have been carried out in regions of fairly uniform conditions of topography, climate, agricultural economy, and cultural background. Consequently, it is generally admitted that lack of uniformity in any of those conditions can modify the basic pattern (25:207). To the eyes of the cultural geographer, the emphasis on economic factors relegates unduly on the background important cultural factors. [...]

An exploration of the access and consumption of indigenous vegetables by households in rural and informal settlements in the West Coast District Municipality, Western Cape Province, South Africa

Ndhlovu, Bongiwe 01 1900 (has links)
The consumption of indigenous leafy vegetables is a significant tradition and culture of South Africa. The purpose of this research was to investigate the access and consumption of indigenous leafy vegetables in rural and informal settlements of the West Coast District Municipality (WCDM), Western Cape, South Africa. The research identified ILV being available and accessible in WCDM, methods of preparation used as well as the factors influencing the consumption of ILV. A cross sectional descriptive survey design was used and data collection was done using a structured questionnaire. Respondents were randomly selected from the five local municipalities in the West Coast District Municipality. A total of 205 respondents representing 205 households in the rural and informal settlements of the West Coast District Municipality were interviewed. Majority of respondents were black females, unemployed and had no formal qualification. Seventeen indigenous leafy vegetables were identified in the West Coast District and the majority of the respondents consumed indigenous leafy vegetables as part of their diet mainly because of the health benefits and taste. Four methods of cooking, namely stewing, boiling, steaming and frying were used by the respondents to prepare indigenous leafy vegetables and most of the respondents added additional ingredients during cooking such as mealie meal, fish oil and salt. The informal sector was identified as the major source of indigenous leafy vegetables and cultivation of ILV was very limited. The majority of the respondents consumed ILV at least once a week. Preservation of ILV was not a common practice. Factors such as employment status, higher household size and higher income levels did not influence the frequency of ILV consumption. / Life and Consumer Sciences / M. Sc. (Consumer Science)
