The second part provides an insight into the living conditions of homosexuals in Namibian society in the context of religion, traditions and legislation applying to this issue. The third part deals with the Christian ethical perspective of homosexuality in the context of natural religions and human rights.

Educating about LGBQ Diversity in Introductory College Courses

abstract: Information concerning sexual minorities is conspicuously absent from secondary education curriculums. Student attitudes toward sexual diversity are impacted, and those entering higher educational environments are at a disadvantage when faced with diverse university populations. This study attempted to close the information gap among first year college students and to improve attitudes by teaching about sexual minorities, especially gays and lesbians. In addition to their standard coursework, 41 student participants (31 in the intervention group, and 10 in the control group) who were enrolled in required introductory college courses received six short lessons on sexual diversity. Mixed methods data collection and analysis included a pre and post intervention survey, the Riddle Homophobia Scale (1985), and qualitative electronic discussion boards throughout the intervention. Surveys revealed a significant decrease in negative attitudes but no increase in more affirming attitudes. Qualitative data showed somewhat inconsistent results with quantitative surveys, but allowed deeper analysis of the familial, social, religious and societal influences on student attitudes toward lesbian, gay, bisexual and questioning (LGBQ) people. Discussion includes possible explanations for the findings, suggestions for future research, and suggests refinements of the Riddle Homophobia Scale. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Leadership and Innovation 2016

This research tested the perception of Christian parents framing of gender and sexual identities in Duduza, Nigel. The researcher conducted the quantitative research based on the theoretical framework and measured it by means of variables and questions through the development of a questionnaire. The triangulation questions from the literature review were included in the questionnaire. The quantitative data collected was in the form of numbers. The literature review was completed to find out what had previously been written about the dependant variable, and to clarify and define concepts contained in the dependant variable, as well as to examine the independent variables and their elements influencing the dependant variable. The study provides the recommendation for the Christians denominations towards influencing change in the Christian parents’ framing of gender and sexual identities in Duduza, Nigel.

The debate stirred by the recent appointment of a chief justice and deputy chief justice under the judicial reform process envisaged in Kenya‟s new Constitution has, once again, brought to the fore the attitude surrounding sexual minorities. A section of religious organisations and citizens rejected the nominees because they perceived the duo to either belong to or to support sexual minority groups. The hostility and antipathy directed at the two is not new. In recent times, the clergy and state officials have been quoted calling for the arrest of gays. It is common for perceived homosexuals and lesbians to be harassed because of their sexual orientation. Support for the rights and welfare of this group draws quick condemnation. The Impacts of School Climate and Education Policy on Weight and Victimization Disparities Among Sexual Minority Adolescents

This dissertation examines the influences of LGBTQ positive school climate and state-level anti-bullying policy with sexual and gender minority (SGM) identity enumeration on weight and victimization disparities among sexual minority adolescents. Compared to their heterosexual peers, sexual minority adolescents (those who identify as gay/lesbian or bisexual, or who are unsure of their sexual identity) have higher odds of having obesity and experiencing school violence victimization. The effects of school climate and anti-bullying policy that seek to specifically provide protections for LGBTQ adolescents on the health outcomes of obesity and school violence have rarely been examined, and especially in tandem. Decreasing disparities in both these outcomes would help improve quality of life and decrease morbidity. Therefore, the overall objective of this dissertation is to help fill several gaps in the literature related to obesity, school violence, school climate, and state-level anti-bullying policy with SGM identity enumeration. An adapted Social Ecological Model guided conceptualization and design of the three studies included. Chapter 1 introduces the current state of adolescent obesity, including trends in obesity over time, contextual influences on obesity, and obesity disparities among sexual minority adolescents. Existing research on school violence victimization, school climate, and SGM enumerated policy are also introduced and described. Chapter 2, a systematic review, aimed to systematically search and review the literature on the effects of positive school climate on weight-related health behaviors and risk factors for obesity. Overall, we found that LGBTQ adolescents in more positive school climates reported lower levels of bullying victimization, depressive and suicidal feelings, and sexual orientation-based harassment than those in less positive school climates. Results were more mixed for studies examining the effects of positive school climate on alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. Chapter 3, a cross-sectional analysis of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC’s) Youth Risk Behavior Surveys (YRBS) and School Health Profiles (SHP) from 2010–2019, examined and compared the associations among sexual identity, school violence victimization, and obesity across varying levels of LGBTQ school climate in ten United States school districts. We found that for both female and male adolescents, regardless of sexual identity, those who reported two or more counts of school violence victimization had significantly higher odds of obesity compared to those who reported no violence victimization experienced in the last 12 months (1.33 and 1.24 greater odds, respectively). We also found that in the presence of more positive LGBTQ school climates, adolescents had 0.85 lower odds of obesity compared to those in the presence of less positive LGBTQ school climates. Chapter 4, a quasi-experimental difference-in-differences analysis of state-level anti-bullying policies and state-level CDC YRBS data from 1999–2019, examined the causal effect of anti-bullying policies with SGM identity enumeration on bullying and obesity trends over time. We found that adolescent girls had a significant 1.0 percentage point decrease in the probability of bullying victimization in the period post SGM enumeration enactment. For boys, this association was slightly stronger with a 3.2 percentage point decrease in the probability of bullying victimization in the post-period. However, when we examined subgroups of sexual minority adolescents specifically, we found the average treatment effects for SGM enumeration were even stronger for sexual minority girls and boys—with a 6.4 percentage point decrease in the probability of being bullied for sexual minority girls and a 6.0 percentage point decrease for sexual minority boys. Results for the obesity outcome showed that in the post-period, obesity rates increased for sexual minority girls and boys, an unintended effect that should be explored in future research that considers temporality of relationships among these outcome variables. Finally, Chapter 5 summarizes the studies included in the dissertation, identifies strengths and limitations, reviews key findings, and discusses implications for policy, practice, and future research. Using strong quantitative statistical methods, our primary contribution to the public health literature is that LGBTQ positive school climates and inclusive, SGM enumerated anti-bullying policies work to help decrease odds of obesity and rates of bullying victimization, respectively, for both heterosexual and sexual minority adolescents—highlighting how specific protections for one group of adolescents can extend benefits to all adolescents.

A Case Study Exploring the Agency of Black LGBTQ+ Youth in NYC's Ballroom Culture

Recognizing the importance of context with regard to youth agency, this study explores how 8 Black LGBTQ+ youth understand their practices of agency in ballroom culture, an underground Black LGBTQ+ culture. Ballroom was chosen as the backdrop for this scholarly endeavor because it allowed for the study of the phenomenon — Black LGBTQ+ youth agency — in a space where the youth might feel more able to be themselves, especially given that the 2019 Black LGBTQ+ youth report published by the Human Rights Campaign revealed that only 35% of Black LGBTQ+ youth reported being able to “be themselves at school” (Kahn et al., 2019). Thus, instead of asking what is wrong with schools, this study inverted the question to explore what is “right” about ballroom culture in which Black LGBTQ+ youth might practice different kinds of agency due to their intersectional racial and LGBTQ+ identities being recognized and celebrated. Framed by the youth’s understanding of their own agency across different contexts, my research illuminates the complex interrelationships between youth agency, social identity, and context. Extending the literature on youth agency and Black LGBTQ+ youth, the findings of this study suggest that in many ways these youth are always already practicing agency to work toward different ends, and that these different end goals are greatly mediated by the contexts in which they find themselves. In making connections between the ways Black LGBTQ+ youth feel liberated within ballroom space to use their agency to explore and affirm their identities outside socially constructed norms, the findings of this study point to new opportunities for education research, practice, and policy to learn from ballroom culture about how to better invite Black LGBTQ+ youth into schools in humane and educative ways, encourage their agentive imaginations within education spaces, and promote liberatory school environments that recognize and embrace these youth’s intersectional identities.

Creative Gender Expression Performativity As a Coping Mechanism for Minority Stress

Creative Gender Expression Performativity may be a coping mechanism for dealing with minority stress in sexual and gender minority populations. The current study suggests the creation of a new scale that measures effortful presentation rather than directional presentation. Rather than examining whether someone identifies as masculine or feminine – the proposed model would instead look at how much effort an individual is putting into their gender expression. In this mixed methods study, participants (N = 187) completed a survey based on gender expression, minority stress, and mental health, while 10 participants completed a qualitative post-survey interview via email. Multiple regressions were performed to examine the relationships between gender expression and negative health outcomes. Tests performed examined relationships amongst factors such as positive gender expression outlook, gender congruence, and self-esteem; and outcomes including depression, anxiety, and anticipated discrimination. Multiple regression analyses revealed that positive perceptions of gender expression acted as a buffer to anticipated discrimination. TGNC individuals experienced lower self-esteem and higher depression levels than cisgender individuals. Qualitative themes uncovered motives behind gender expression, such as coping with minority stress.

Giving among same-sex couples: the role of identity, motivations, and charitable decision-making in philanthropic engagement

Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI) / This study investigates the philanthropic practices of same-sex couples, including their motivations for giving and how they make philanthropic decisions. Existing research has focused almost exclusively on heterosexual couples and assumes that all households are the same. Using the frameworks of the eight mechanisms of giving and social identification theory, this study investigates the role of identity in philanthropic behavior and how gender differences may be amplified among same-sex couples. Drawing on 19 semi-structured joint interviews with gay and lesbian couples in Indiana, the research uses a qualitative method to "give voice" to a marginalized population's philanthropic experiences that are little studied. The study finds participants are highly engaged in nonprofit organizations and participate in a diverse array of philanthropic behaviors. While many couples support at least one LGBT-affiliated nonprofit, giving to LGBT causes does not constitute the majority of most couples' philanthropy. Still, sexual orientation plays a significant role in motivating support for the LGBT community, for public policy changes and equal rights initiatives, and to HIV/AIDS-service organizations. Sexual orientation also determines which organizations many donors would not support. Same-sex couples also use their philanthropy as a way to support their communities at-large and be recognized by mainstream society. In terms of financial management, a majority of participant couples maintained independent financial accounts or partial pooling systems of household income, leading to more opportunities for charitable giving; at the same time, couples expressed low conflict over making giving decisions and supported one another's interests. This study provides scholars and practitioners insights into the complex interactions of motivations, identity, and financial arrangements that underscore charitable giving, and it offers implications for nonprofit organizations and fundraisers who work with diverse populations of donors.
