Precepts and Performances: Overseas Monks and the Emergence of Cosmopolitan Japan

In 733, Japan’s ninth diplomatic mission to Tang China conveyed two Japanese Buddhist monks committed to finding a Chinese master of Buddhist precepts. The prevailing explanation for the precepts master solicitation states that Japan lacked sufficient numbers of fully ordained monks to conduct ordinations using vinaya codes of conduct. While this campaign successfully resulted in precept masters going to Japan in 736 and again in 754, there were no notable changes to monastic ordinations until after the final monk arrived. It is commonly presumed that only the latter precepts master possessed sufficient charisma, training, and followers necessary to establish a vinaya tradition. However, this explanation presumes that the later reforms matched the original expedition’s intent. Moreover, this position ignores the other monks’ activities in Japan’s political, cultural, and religious affairs between 736-754. It is also not supported by period texts. In this work, I utilize textual and physical evidence to demonstrate that these overseas monks’ activities and significance were largely unrelated to monastic precepts and ordinations. Instead, they rose to prominence due to their knowledge of Buddhist texts and rituals, familiarity with neighboring countries’ Buddhist legitimation and protection systems, fluency in overseas forms of cultural capital, and embodied otherness. Their influence can be seen in their involvement in the Ministry for Monastic Affairs, promulgation of the Avataṃsaka Sutra, and the creation and worship of the Great Buddha of Nara. Through highlighting these understudied and highly diverse monks, I demonstrate that Japan’s overseas population was intrinsically involved with the country’s transformation into a transregionally-connected, Buddhist country. Moreover, I argue that the overseas monks affiliated with Daianji Temple (大安寺) provided the Japanese court with direct ties to foreign countries that not only expanded Japanese international awareness, but also helped establish the country’s understanding of its position within a broader Buddhist world.

As a novel on contemporary issues (shishi xiaoshuo 时事小说), the unfinished novel The Stone of Goddess Nüwa (Nüwa shi 女娲石; 1904-1905) recounts a story about new women’s attempts to save the nation, which is a reflection of late-Qing China. From a historical perspective, I aim to provide a study of the Nüwa stone and characterization of new women in the novel with the help of multiple intertexts. My thesis explores how the stone and the characterization elaborate the theme and design of the novel: new women saving the nation, which includes radical ideas for women and national salvation in the late Qing. Against the socio-cultural context of The Stone of Goddess Nüwa, I argue that through the characterization and narrative designs of the stone, the novel presents its explorations to solve social and political problems for national salvation, in which female power plays a central and crucial role. This thesis endeavors to both enrich the understanding and value of The Stone of Goddess Nüwa from a historical perspective and call critical attention to its meaning in the decades’ exploration of improving both China and Chinese women in literary works from the late Qing.

A Doença Hepática Gordurosa Não Alcoólica (DHGNA) é atualmente uma das formas mais comuns de doença hepática, e está diretamente relacionada com a obesidade. Estudos indicam uma prevalência por volta de 30% na população ocidental e 11% na população oriental. A DGHNA possui um largo espectro abrangendo desde casos de esteatose simples sem inflamação, até casos com esteatohepatite e fibrose, podendo evoluir para cirrose e carcinoma hepatocelular. A fisiopatogênese da DHGNA é baseada em múltiplos eventos: resistência insulínica, aumento da lipólise periférica, aumento da síntese de novo de lipídeos, estresse oxidativo, endotoxemia crônica no desencadeamento da inflamação e fibrose entre outros. A etapa inicial caracteriza-se pelo acúmulo de ácidos graxos no hepatócito, suplantando sua capacidade de metabolização e exportação conseqüente à ação lipogênica da insulina, desta forma o metabolismo de ácidos graxos está intimamente ligado ao desenvolvimento da DHGNA. O Yo Jyo Hen Shi Ko (YHK) é um composto natural usado na medicina japonesa para tratamento de doenças hepáticas e apresenta propriedades antioxidantes, antiinflamatórias e hipolipemiantes. O presente estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito do YHK no metabolismo hepático de lipídeos. Para tanto, foram utilizados camundongos obesos (ob/ob) com esteatohepatite não alcoólica (ENA) induzida por dieta deficiente em colina e metionina (DCM) e foram analisados no tecido hepático, genes relacionados com a síntese de novo de lipídeos (SREBP1c, FASn), genes relacionados com a oxidação e exportação de lipídeos (CPT1a e SCD-1, MTP), assim como genes relacionados com o armazenamento de lipídeos (Perilipina e ADFP). O YHK apresentou um efeito citoprotetor hepático com melhora dos parâmetros histológicos neste modelo experimental de ENA. Associadamente, houve redução na expressão de genes relacionados à síntese de novo como SREBP e da FASn, quando se comparou o grupo tratado com DCM+YHK com o grupo não tratado DCM. Em contrapartida, houve aumento na expressão da MTP e da SCD-1 ocasionando uma maior exportação de triglicerídeos hepáticos nos animais que utilizaram o YHK. Ainda, o YHK modulou as proteínas Perilipina e ADFP. Por outro lado, não houve modificação na oxidação de lipídeos.. Conclui-se que o YHK pode ser uma droga promissora no tratamento da DHGNA, já que age modulando genes envolvidos na síntese e exportação de lipídeos hepáticos, reduzindo o acúmulo de gordura no hepatócito / Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is currently one of the most common forms of liver disease, related directly to the increase of obesity in the world. Previous studies indicate a prevalence of around 30% in the western population and 11% in the eastern. This disease covers cases from simple steatosis without inflammation to cases of steato hepatitis (NASH) and fibrosis and it may lead to liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The pathophysiology of NAFLD is based on multiple events: insulin resistance, increased peripheral lipolysis, increased de novo lipogenesis, oxidative stress, endotoxemia in triggering chronic inflammation and fibrosis and others. The initial stage of the disease is characterized by the accumulation of fatty acids in hepatocytes caused by the lipogenic action of insulin. This condition results in the surpassing of the cells ability to metabolize and export. This way, the metabolism of fatty acids is closely linked to the development of NAFLD. The Yo Jyo Hen Shi Ko (YHK) is a natural compound used in Japanese medicine for the treatment of liver disease and it has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and lipid lowering properties. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of YHK in the hepatic metabolism of lipids. An experimental model was designed using obese mice (ob/ob) affected by NASH induced by a deficient diet in choline and methionine (MCD). Then, genes from its hepatic tissue related to de novo lipogenesis (SREBP1c, FASN), to lipid oxidation and exportation (CPT1A and SCD-1, MTP) as well as genes related to lipid storage (Perilipin and ADFP) were analyzed. The YHK presented a cytoprotective effect, improving the hepatic histological parameters in this experimental model. Additionally, when comparing the group treated with MCD + YHK (diet + YHK) to the untreated MCD group (diet) there was a reduction in the expression of genes related to de novo synthesis like SREBP1c and FASn. However, an increased expression of MTP and SCD-1 were observed leading to a greater liver exportation of fatty acids in animals that were treated with YHK. Moreover, the YHK modulated the proteins Perilipin and ADFP. On the other hand, there was no changing in lipid oxidation. In summary, the YHK can be a promising drug for the treatment of NAFLD, as it acts by modulating genes involved in the synthesis and exportation of hepatic lipids, reducing the accumulation of fat in hepatocytes

It is considered to be a potential way for school-based teacher development develops to be professional learning communities (PLCs). PLCs are viewed to be constructed gradually through teacher interactions and communications. The development of PLCs is tightly related to the continuing teacher collaboration. In response to the wave of global education reform, the Chinese mainland implements school-based teacher development policies to encourage teacher collaboration. / Informed by the theory of communities of practice (CoP), this study adopts a case study approach to explore the process of negotiation of meaning in teacher collaboration in school-based teaching and research. In-depth interviews were conducted on 37 teachers in two primary schools to collect data on teachers’ perception, understanding and participation in collaboration. Observations and document collection were also carried out to collect data to map out a more detailed picture. / Findings revealed that teacher collaboration was institutionalized as subject teacher communities in hierarchical structure system, guided by the policies of school-based teacher development in District Education Bureau. In the process of negotiation of meaning, teacher communities developed into three major norms of interaction: obedience to authority, relational harmony, emotional and cognitive support being combined. With the principle of instrumental rationality, teachers pursued the maximization of short-term utilizing teaching materials. Teacher collaboration was oriented towards the reproduction of teaching skills. / This study enriches the academic discussion on the process of teacher collaboration, develops local understanding of negotiation of meaning in school-based teacher development, and makes theoretical contributions to the international academic discussion on the understanding of CoP, PLCs and teacher professionalism. Concerning the teacher community, teachers were guided to develop subject communities in hierarchical structure system. For the knowledge boundry, district administrators led the direction of school-based teacher development. Regarding the practices, teachers worked together and shared standardized course procedures, teaching plans and open lessons. Concerning the norms of interaction, teacher followed patriarchal leadership, provided emotional and cognitive support reciprocally, and worked together to finish technical tasks. As divergent ideas and opinions were avoided for the sake of harmony, teacher community did not generate constructive conflict. Regarding the orientation of practice, teacher community targeted problem solving, laid emphasize on the reproduction of teaching skills, and limited the potential space for teacher communication. Teacher professionalism underwent a mixed effect based on developmental stages and personal choices. Subject teacher groups were not developed into PLCs in our case schools, but they demonstrated unique local features. Teachers showed divergent learning trajectories in their professional career within the teacher community. / It would help to extend external boundary of communities through developing networked learning communities. The capacity of communities would be cultivated through supporting informal micro-communities and encouraging participation. Teacher collaboration should abandon technical approach, and open professional dialogues should be encouraged. 研究中國明清慈善組織的歷史學者們認為,中國都市中的善會善堂起源於明末清初。但是,這些研究者較少指出慈善組織如何代表地方利益,也相對忽略慈善組織及其觀念在鄉村社會的歷史發展過程。另一方面,研究中國鄉村社會的歷史學者們認為,維護地方利益的社會組織通常以寺廟及祠堂為中心,運用宗教和禮儀來表達地方訴求。伴隨著近代民族國家的建立和現代化的發展,通過宗教禮儀表達地方訴求的方式遭遇前所未有的衝擊;那麼,慈善活動及慈善組織是否提供了一種空間,延續傳統的宗教祭祀活動進而表達地方訴求? / 本文即嘗試從地方的視角,探討近代慈善事業如何整合到地方社會,以期理解地方社會對近代中國社會變化的調適與應對。本文聚焦近代中西文化交流的前沿地區──中山縣,對其轄內鄰近澳門的前山地區進行深入剖析。在20世紀30年代「反迷信」話語以及中山縣現代化建設的歷史背景下,探討這一地區的慈善與「迷信」的關係,以及如何實踐慈善事業及傳統的救贖。 / Historians who study the history of charity in China note that the history of Chinese urban charity organizations may be documented from the late Ming dynasty. Nevertheless, they do not argue that from the late Ming, those organizations represented local interests in urban administration and the development of charity in the rural areas. On the other hand, historians who study village and town communities have noted that local organizations representing local interests were centered at temples and ancestral halls. However, the structure was destroyed by modernization and the establishment of nation state in modern China. Meanwhile, charity institutions took more significant roles in local society since late Qing. Therefore, is it possible that charity took over the position that had been occupied by religious sacrifice as the defining quality of local management? This study examines how practices and ideas of charity in modern times were adopted in local society from the bottom up. 来自贫困家庭的青少年的成长日益受到关注,然而现有应对措施往往以资金援助、慰问探访为主。随着中国内地社会工作服务的发展,政府和公众对其应用于服务该群体有了更多期待。本研究尝试为相关服务提供实证依据。 / 受社会资本理论的启发,本研究试图探索嵌入于家庭、学校、朋辈和社区关系网络的社会资本对青少年社会心理发展的影响;结合自我效能感和抗逆力理论,亦试图探索主体性因素对外界社会资本的调动作用;比较贫困组与非贫困组在相关机制中存在的差异,建构一套在中国社会和文化情境下适用的理论模型,探索未来服务的方向。本研究以社会调查的方法,从中山市22所高中选取了1,627名学生参与研究,包括贫困组学生571人,非贫困组1056人。本研究尝试回答四个研究问题:第一,来自贫困家庭的青少年与来自非贫困家庭的青少年在社会心理发展、社会资本及自我效能感和抗逆力方面是否存在差异?第二,不同维度的社会资本对社会心理发展有怎样的影响?第三,自我效能感和抗逆力是否能在社会资本和社会心理发展之间发挥中介效应?第四,贫困组与非贫困组的青少年在社会资本、主体性对社会心理发展的影响机制上是否存在差异? / 通过t检定发现,相较于非贫困组,贫困组有较好的亲社会行为和学业成就表现,而在精神健康和社交能力方面不存在显著的差异;贫困组在学校社会资本、朋辈社会资本和社区社会资本方面有较高的水平,而在家庭社会资本方面不存在显著的差异;贫困组相较而言有较高的抗逆力水平。 / 结构方程模型的结果支持了家庭社会资本、学校社会资本和朋辈社会资本对青少年的社会心理发展存在直接的正向影响的假设,同时,不同的社会资本亦可以通过自我效能感和抗逆力对青少年的社会心理发展产生间接的影响。然而,本研究亦发现社区社会资本对精神健康和社交能力的直接影响是负向的。 / 多群组结构方程模型的结果指出,贫困组与非贫困组在社会资本、主体性因素对社会心理发展的影响大致相同,但在部分路径上存在显著差异。这亦体现出在服务项目设计时需要留意到的贫困组与非贫困组之间在相关机制上存在的差异。本研究亦展现了社会资本的互惠性。此外,研究发现亦反映出社会资本的规范和制裁功能可能对被标签的群体的主体性因素提升带来限制。 / 本研究整合了社会资本理论、自我效能感理论和抗逆力理论,探索了社会资本、自我效能感和抗逆力对贫困家庭的青少年的社会心理发展的影响。在中国内地本土化的尝试以及对来自贫困家庭的青少年的关注亦拓展了现有理论的适用性。本研究对实务的启发在于,提出可以透过投入社会资本,提升自我效能感及抗逆力,进而有效地促进青少年的成长与发展。研究者亦对现有的对经济弱势群体的刻板印象提出了质疑,同时对社会资本的双重效应以及社会福利传递过程可能产生的"污名"效应提出了反思。 / There has been an increasing concern on the development of adolescents form economically disadvantaged families. However, the policy and service for this group of young people remain in the forms of financial assistance and home visit. With the development of social work service in mainland China, the government and public have more expectation on its implementation for serving this group. This research provided empirical evidence for related service. / Based on social capital theory, this study explored the influences of social capital embedded in the networks of family, school, peers, and community. It also integrated the self-efficacy theory and resilience theory into the theoretical framework to examine the role of personal agency in mobilizing various forms social capital. Moreover, by comparing the differences between the poor and the non-poor group, the study established a theoretical model of how social capital and personal agency jointly affected adolescents’ psychosocial development in a Chinese context. It thereby potentially informs future professional services. This study adopted the quantitative method with social survey, and drew a sample of 1,627 students from 22 senior high schools, with 571 students forming the poor group and the other 1056 students forming the non-poor group. The study tried to address four research questions: 1) Are there any significant differences between the poor and non-poor groups in terms of psychosocial development, social capital, self-efficacy and resilience? 2) How do different forms of social capital influence adolescents’ psychosocial development? 3) What are the mechanism by which self-efficacy and resilience mediate the effects of social capital on adolescents’ psychosocial development? 4) Are there any significant differences on the mechanisms between these two groups? / Results of t-tests indicated that the students from economically disadvantaged families had better performance in pro-social behavior and academic achievement, while there were no significant differences in terms of mental health and social competence. This group of students also exhibited higher possessions of school social capital, peer social capital, and community social capital, while with no significant difference in access to family social capital. Moreover, they showed a higher level of resilience. / Results of structural equation modeling analysis supported the hypotheses that family social capital, school social capital, and peer social capital had direct positive effects on adolescents’ psychosocial development. Furthermore, different forms of social capital could influence the outcomes of psychosocial development indirectly through individuals’ self-efficacy and resilience. However, community social capital showed a negative direct effect on mental health and social competence. / Results of the multi-group structural equation modeling suggested that the effects of social capital and personal agency on adolescents’ psychosocial development were mostly similar between the poor and non-poor groups, except for a few paths. It implied the particular importance on differentiating the effects of various forms of social capital and personal agency factors on psychosocial development and when designing assistance programs for adolescents from low-income families. It also suggested the reciprocity of social capital. In addition, it further highlighted that the norms and effective sanctions of social capital might produce disempowerment on personal agency to the groups labeled as disadvantaged ones in the society. / Integrating social capital theory, self-efficacy theory, and resilience theory, this research has explored the influences of social capital, self-efficiency and resilience on psychosocial development of adolescents from economically disadvantaged families. It advanced the application of social capital theory in understanding youth development in the Chinese socio-cultural. It also proposed an effective way to promote adolescents’ optimal development through investing social capital and improving their self-efficacy and resilience. This study challenged the existing stereotypes of adolescents from economically disadvantaged families.
