Thesis (PhD)--Stellenbosch University, 2014. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Electromagnetic shielding plays a significant role in the protection of electronic equipment.
Its application is essential for mitigating radio-frequency interference for the Karoo Array
Telescope (MeerKAT) project in the Karoo region of the Northern Cape. In this context,
time-domain (TD) methodology for small enclosure shielding effectiveness (SE) is developed
using a reverberated environment technique. Interest revolves around measurement time
speed-up and an extended SE response which covers the under-moded condition of small
enclosures. Recommended IEC standard 61000-4-21 [1] e ciency of 0.75, for log-periodic
dipole array (LPDA) antenna, is also validated from a reverberation chamber (RC)
characterisation of a printed circuit-board (PCB) LPDA e ciency.
A built-in pulse generator and the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) receiver RATTY form
the main elements of the TD metrology. For validation purpose, a reference coaxial airline
is built. The cable is characterised with computational codes (CST and FEKO) and is
also modelled with Vance and Kley's analytical expressions. The results are compared
with TD transfer impedance (Zt) measurement within the RC. The study shows that the
cable fixture within an RC shapes the cable under-test (CUT) Zt. The airline itself is
also introducing an oscillating component within Zt. The resonance is proportional to the
CUT length and it is visible within the measurement data and the simulations. It is not,
however, taken into account by the theoretical models.
The consequence of an incorrect antenna efficiency on RC applications is also addressed
using a PCB LPDA antenna efficiency investigation. The unknown LPDA is simulated
with CST for the study. The result is compared to an RC measurement validating the IEC
61000-4-21 standard efficiency recommendation of 0.75 [1]. This methodology characterised
the unknown antenna parameter from a reference dipole antenna efficiency we investigated
with FEKO. Simulated Wheeler-cap techniques permitted the reference antenna validation.
We found that an inaccurate LPDA efficiency has little effect at higher frequency if the
IEC efficiency is adopted. However, a difference of more than 7 dB can arise at low
frequency if the real efficiency differs by more than 0.3 with respect to the IEC value.
The study highlights the importance of a correct antenna efficiency for accurate RC
applications. The nested-enclosure technique is regarded as the conventional method of investigating
small enclosures SE [2]. The technique is in general time-consuming and works for a frequency range higher than three times the enclosure under test (EUT) lowest cut-o
value. Our TD metrology covers a frequency band up to 1.4 GHz which coincides with
our enclosure under-moded region. The SE characterisation is not well-documented
within this particular region. The dissertation contributes to this field using a non-stirred
nested-enclosure configuration. In contrast to the conventional use of the nested-enclosure
methodology [2], the source is placed here within the EUT and the enclosure is treated as
a normal radiator. The SE definition according to the IEEE standard in [2] is followed
and the enclosure total transferred-power is computed from the port's reflection coeficient.
The approach does not require a stirrer for the EUT. Our measurement shows an SE
agreement between the modfied and the appropriate nested-enclosure technique from 390
MHz up to 4 GHz. The investigation is faster, but in addition the TD spectrum gives a
more detailed SE response than the FD approach. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Elektromagnetiese skerming speel n belangrike rol in die beskerming van elektroniese
komponente. Die toepassing daarvan is noodsaaklik vir die versagting van radiofrekwensie
steurings in die Karoo Array Telescope (MeerKAT) projek wat tans ontwikkel word in die
Karoo omgewing van die Noord-Kaap. In hierdie konteks is daar op n tydsgebied metode
vir klein-omhulsel beskermingse ektiwiteit (BE) gefokus, deur gebruik te maak van n

Modelling the EM properties of dipole reflections with application to uniform chaff cloudsKruger, Neil 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MScEng (Electrical and Electronic Engineering))--University of Stellenbosch, 2009. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: The origin of chaff dates as far back as WWII, acting as a passive EM countermeasure it was used to confuse enemy radar systems and is still in use today. The purpose of this study is, firstly, to build up a knowledge base for determining chaff parameters and secondly, to calculate the theoretical Radar Cross Section (RCS) of a chaff cloud.
Initially dipole resonant properties are investigated relative to dipole physical dimensions. This is extended to the wideband spatial average RCS of a dipole with application to chaff clouds. A model is developed for calculating the theoretical RCS of a cloud typically produced by a single, multiband chaff cartridge.
This model is developed on the principles of sparse clouds with negligible coupling; the dipole density for which the model is valid is determined through the statistical simulation of chaff clouds.
To determine the effectiveness of chaff clouds, the E-field behaviour through a chaff cloud is investigated numerically. From simulation results a model is developed for estimating the position and drop in E-field strength. It is concluded that though it would be possible to hide a target behind a chaff cloud given ideal circumstances, it is not practical in reality. Given the presented results, recommendations are made for future work. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Die oorsprong van kaf dateer so ver terug as WOII. Dit was gebruik as ‘n passiewe EM teenmaatreël teen vyandelike radar stelsels en is steeds vandag in gebruik. Die doel van hierdie studie is eerstens, om ‘n kennisbasis op te bou vir die bepaling van kaf parameters en tweedens, om die teoretiese RDS van kafwolke te bereken.
Aanvanklik word die dipool resonante eienskappe ondersoek relatief tot die dipool dimensies. Die studie word uitgebrei tot die wyeband ruimte gemiddelde RDS van ‘n dipool met toepassing op kafwolke. ‘n Model word ontwikkel om die teoretiese RDS te bereken vir ‘n tipiese kafwolk geproduseer deur ‘n enkele, multi-band kafpakkie.
Die model is gegrond op die beginsels van lae digte kafwolke met weglaatbare koppeling; die dipool digtheid waarvoor die model geldig is, is bepaal deur statistiese simulasie van kafwolke.
Om die effektiwiteit van kafwolke te bepaal, word die E-veld gedrag deur kafwolke numeries ondersoek. Vanaf simulasie resultate word ‘n model ontwikkel om die ligging van, en daling in E-veld sterkte af te skat. Daar word tot die gevolgtrekking gekom dat, alhoewel dit moontlik is om ‘n teiken agter ‘n kafwolk te versteek in ideale omstandighede, dit nie prakties is nie. Na aanleiding van die resultate verkry, is aanbevelings vir verdere werk gedoen.

Strategies to increase the signal to noise ratio in three-dimensional positron emission tomographyMiller, Matthew P. January 2000 (has links)
Positron Emission Tomography (PET) is an imaging technique that uses biologically relevant molecules labelled with positron emitting radioisotopes to measure regional tissue function in living organisms. To maximise the detection efficiency, data are acquired in 3D, that is, all possible detector combinations in a scanner without inter-ring shielding (septa). The gain in sensitivity afforded by 3D PET is offset by the increase in random coincidences, scattered coincidences and deadtime. These problems must be overcome for the gain in sensitivity to be fully realised. The aim of this research project was to investigate strategies to increase the signal to noise ratio of the 3D PET data. Additional side shielding, both in neuro and body scanning, has been implemented and assessed. Large gains were achieved using the neuro shields in experimental and clinical studies. The potential of the body shields was tested in experimental and in-vivo studies which showed that they were scan dependent. For example, no gain was found for a cardiac blood flow (H2 IS0) study. A model-based scatter correction was assessed by companng compartment ratios within the 'Utah' phantom with radioactivity outside the field of view, with and without neuroshielding. Recovered ratios were within 6% of their actual values. The integration time was reduced in an effort to decrease the system deadtime. A peak increase of 150/0 in noise equivalent count rate was measured for a uniform cylinder inside the field of view. A random coincidence variance reduction technique was implemented and assessed to reduce the noise contained in the delayed window random coincidence estimate. The algorithm was evaluated using phantoms and tested on clinical data. A mean 16% reduction in coefficient of variation was measured for a C15O torso study.

Magnetic Resonance Parameters of Radicals Studied by Density Functional Theory MethodsTelyatnyk, Lyudmyla January 2004 (has links)
<p>The recent state of art in the magnetic resonance area putsforward the electron paramagnetic resonance, EPR, and nuclearmagnetic resonance, NMR, experiments on prominent positions forinvestigations of molecular and electronic structure. A mostdifficult aspect of such experiments is usually the properinterpretation of data obtained from high-resolution spectra,that, however, at the same time opens a great challenge forpure theoretical methods to interpret the spectral features.This thesis constitutes an effort in this respect, as itpresents and discusses calculations of EPR and NMR parametersof paramagnetic molecules. The calculations are based on newmethodology for determination of properties of paramagneticmolecules in the framework of the density functional theory,which has been developed in our laboratory.</p><p>Paramagnetic molecules are, in some sense, very special. Thepresence of unpaired electrons essentially modifies theirspectra. The experimental determination of the magneticresonance parameters of such molecules is, especially in theNMR case, quite complicated and requires special techniques ofspectral detection. The significant efforts put into suchexperiments are completely justi fied though by the importantroles of paramagnetic species playing in many areas, such as,for example, molecular magnets, active centers in biologicalsystems, and defects in inorganic conductive materials.</p><p>The first two papers of this thesis deal with thetheoretical determination of NMR parameters, such as thenuclear shielding tensors and the chemical shifts, inparamagnetic nitroxides that form core units in molecularmagnets. The developed methodology aimed to realize highaccuracy in the calculations in order to achieve successfulapplications for the mentioned systems. Theeffects of hydrogenbonding are also described in that context. Our theory forevaluation of nuclear shielding tensors in paramagneticmolecules is consistent up to the second order in the finestructure constant and considers orbital, fully isotropicdipolar, and isotropic contact contributions to the shieldingtensor.</p><p>The next three projects concern electron paramagneticresonance. The wellknown EPR parameters, such as the g-tensorsand the hyperfine coupling constants are explored. Calculationsof electronic g-tensors were carried out in the framework of aspin-restricted open-shell Kohn-Sham method combined with thelinear response theory recently developed in our laboratory.The spincontamination problem is then automatically avoided.The solvent effects, described by the polarizable continuummodel, are also considered. For calculations of the hyperfinecoupling constants a so-called restricted-unrestricted approachhas been developed in the context of density functional theory.Comparison of experimentally and theoretically determinedparameters shows that qualitative mutual agreement of the twosets of data can be easily achieved by employing the proposedformalisms.</p>

Full-field modelling of crack tip shielding phenomenaLu, Yanwei January 2011 (has links)
The application of fracture mechanics to engineering design has provided significant advances in understanding of the causes and mechanisms of failure and crack growth. Despite this, there are still some aspects that remain incompletely understood, such as the crack closure/crack shielding effect. The presence of crack closure/shielding acts to reduce . The mechanisms of crack closure/shielding are complicated, and have not been fully understood. This work focuses on the plasticity-induced crack tip shielding mechanism and presents a novel approach to characterise the elastic stress fields under the influence of the plastic enclave surrounding the crack tip. The model is successfully applied to determine the four stress parameters experimentally using full-field photoelastic stress analysis on polycarbonate CT specimens, following studies of the effect of the crack tip position and the valid data collection zone giving the best fit between the model predictions and the experimental data. The predicted values from the model demonstrate good data repeatability, and exhibit sensible trends as a function of crack length and load ratio that are interpretable in terms of physically meaningful changes to the plastic enclave. In addition, the model is proven to describe the stress field around a crack more accurately than classic Williams‟ stress solution. The model is also extended to AL 2024-T3 specimens using a full-field displacement measurement technique, digital image correlation. Using the Sobel edge detection method to identify the crack tip from the displacement fields with a rectangular shaped data collection zone employed in the current study, reasonable trends were again demonstrated in the experimental results as a function of crack length.

Magnetic Materials Characterization and Modeling for the Enhanced Design of Magnetic Shielding of Cryomodules in Particle Accelerators.Sah, Sanjay K 01 January 2016 (has links)
Particle accelerators produce beams of high-energy particles, which are used for both fundamental and applied scientific research and are critical to the development of accelerator driven sub-critical reactor systems. An effective magnetic shield is very important to achieve higher quality factor (Qo) of the cryomodule of a particle accelerator. The allowed value of field inside the cavity due to all external fields (particularly the Earth’s magnetic field) is ~15 mG or less. The goal of this PhD dissertation is to comprehensively study the magnetic properties of commonly used magnetic shielding materials at both cryogenic and room temperatures. This knowledge can be used for the enhanced design of magnetic shields of cryomodes (CM) in particle accelerators. To this end, we first studied the temperature dependent magnetization behavior (M-H curves) of Amumetal and A4K under different annealing and deformation conditions. This characterized the effect of stress or deformation induced during the manufacturing processes and subsequent restoration of high permeability with appropriate heat treatment. Next, an energy based stochastic model for temperature dependent anhysteretic magnetization behavior of ferromagnetic materials was proposed and benchmarked against experimental data. We show that this model is able to simulate and explain the magnetic behavior of as rolled, deformed and annealed amumetal and A4K over a large range of temperatures. The experimental results for permeability are then used in a finite element model (FEM) in COMSOL to evaluate the shielding effectiveness of multiple shield designs at room temperature as well as cryogenic temperature. This work could serve as a guideline for future design, development and fabrication of magnetic shields of CMs.

Hoje em dia, a maioria das operações de alívio é feita utilizando um sistema de posicionamento dinâmico (DP). O sistema DP permite controlar a posição relativa entre o navio aliviador e o FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading), trazendo desta forma muitas vantagens à operação. Neste tipo de operação os dois corpos flutuantes precisam ficar muito próximos um do outro em alto-mar, aumentando de forma significativa a interação hidrodinâmica entre eles. Quando um corpo está no mar ele se torna uma barreira à propagação das ondas, distorcendo o campo de ondas ao redor. Este efeito é chamado de efeito de sombra de onda ou simplesmente efeito de sombra. O efeito de sombra depende do comprimento de onda, do tamanho do corpo que o está criando e da direção de propagação da onda. O efeito de sombra altera de forma significativa a distribuição de energia das ondas do mar na região do fenômeno, alterando desta forma, o comportamento do corpo que está sob a influência do mesmo. Com o comportamento do corpo alterado é esperado que o sistema DP se comporte de forma diferente quando sob influência do efeito de sombra. Este trabalho se propõe a estudar a influência que o efeito de sombra causa no sistema DP, visando obter dados para melhorar os projetos de sistema DP. / Nowadays, a great number of offloading operations is carried out using a dynamic positioning (DP) system. The DP system allows the position between the shuttle tanker (ST) and the FPSO platform (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) to be controlled, bringing several advantages to the operation. In this kind of operation the two vessels must be kept very close in the sea, increasing significantly the hydrodynamic interaction effects between them. When a body is floating at the sea, it turns into a barrier to the wave propagation, disturbing the wave field around it. This effect is called shielding effect or shielding area. The shielding area depends on the wave length, the size of the body and the wave direction. The shielding area significantly disturbs the energy of the wave field nearby the FPSO. Because of that, it is expected that the shuttle tanker presents a different hydrodynamic behavior. The purpose of this work is to study the influence of the shielding area on the DP system, trying to obtain data to improve DP systems design.

The main elements of the current project are textile material research, automotive research, design and development of two upholstery concepts for automotives using smart textiles. The added values are RFI/EMI (Radio Frequency Interference / Electro Magnetic Interference) shielding qualities, light emitting, light reflective and antistatic qualities. Values in the smart-textile area are obtained through choice of material and textile techniques. Transportation textiles are considered high performance technical fabrics, but they must also meet the aesthetic demands of the market. In the current project the design is inspired by Japanese architectural thinking and strives to relate to outdoor environment to reduce the border between indoor and outdoor environment. The inspiration source is water surfaces. The colour setting is also inspired by water surfaces. Material selection is based on the chosen added values, material qualities, appearance and availability. The result of the work is two different upholstery concepts visualizing qualities of smart materials and requests the automotive field. Sprinkle is an upholstery with light emitting, light reflective and antistatic values. The materials used are monofilament, polyester and electroluminescent wires. Wave is an upholstery design with antistatic, light reflective and RFI/Emi shielding qualities.
