Stjernlöf, Ann-Sofie January 2013 (has links)
How can we use modern X-ray technology to raise awareness of the information that is hidden in historic upholstery? The materials and techniques add information to the history object in question and about a profession that is sparsely documented in our country. The knowledge we have today has largely been obtained by studying damaged upholstery, or by removing the show cover and upholstery, a technique which involves high risk of damaging the upholstery. X-ray technology offers a non- intrusive way to examine historical upholstery. Through case studies, I examined four artefacts. The artefacts went trough an inititial visual exam before being transported to The National Heritage Board in Visby where they underwent a thorough X-ray exam. This thesis investigates the process of X-raying historical furniture and gives examples of how to interpret the images. As part of the result, I have begun to create a manual that is intended to present a method that can be used in the process of documentating upholstered furniture using X-ray.

An investigation into repairability of upholstered furniture and a solution to a common problemMogefors, Pia January 2020 (has links)
Today, we are seeing an increasingly clear trend of moving away from the "wear and tear" mentality in society. In the furniture industry, efforts are increasingly being made to support the circular economy. Definitions for what constitutes criteria that describe factors in circularity are still undetermined, such as "longevity", "durability" and "repairability". In my work I try to answer the question how repairability as a quality in the new production of upholstery furniture can be described and what could be done to further strengthen this capacity? The work is in part based on interviews of selected Swedish furniture manufacturers and a number of furniture upholstery masters in the Stockholm area with long craftsmanship experience. The furniture manufacturers that I interviewed produce quality products and have in various ways implemented repairability in their furniture design. In the report I describe how the furniture industry continues to develop repairability as part of its business model. In my work I also show that there are creative solutions and methods to simplify renovation of furniture upholstery that have not yet been tried. This part of the work was carried out on a prototype armchair and led to a method that simplifies and limits the number of steps and working hours. The solution means that you can easily replace the padding and it also includes a proposal for a "spare part" in the form of a ready-made cushion. Thus, the cost of refurbishing the furniture of a furniture upholsterer should be reduced - alternatively, the tasks will be so simple that a more handy customer can make them themselves. With this work, I wish to participate in a furniture culture which contributes to a more sustainable future.

Knowledge, need and demand of eco-labelled upholstery fabrics at Svensson Markspelle, Ludvig SvenssonKORNELIUSSON, ULRIKA January 2010 (has links)
Due to greater awareness of the need to conserve the world's resources - one direction is to promote products with less environmental impact during manufacturing processes. There are different perspectives to understand what is driving this development towards environmental production. On one hand, producers manage their production with less environmental impact either of an integrated environmental management of the company or because of regulatory requirements in steering manufacturing, especially under circumstances in Sweden. The development may also be because of responding to market demand for eco-labelled prod-ucts. My case studies have two approaches of qualitative research in order to answer the research questions: The first angle, makes a description of how a company has adapted to environmental production conditions, and examine the product development process and the choice of implementing product groups in its range. The second angle is from a customer perspective, exploring choices of specific products. The study begins with the producer Lud-vig Svensson AB and their brand Svensson Markspelle of their eco-labelled furniture fabrics and then followed by a comparison of the different kind of customers within the brand. The findings of the thesis revealed that, Ludvig Svensson has adjusted to a sustainable production since before the implementation of an eco-label. It also shows that there is a need for greater information about the company’s environmental work out to customers as eco-labels is limited in its message as a communication tool, regardless whether the eco-label is part of the ongoing environmental work or not. More customer-oriented information could make a difference as an eco-label is a simple message for complex conditions. There is also an op-portunity to increase knowledge. However, it is important to emphasize that although the organization Ecolabelling Sweden has a responsibility to raise awareness about eco-labels they certify for. Findings of the customer study showed that the choices that govern the public environment are complex. At many times other requirements such as washability, durability and flame resistance are put higher than the choice of an upholstery fabric. To be envi-ronmental friendly in product selection is not just about choosing a product with minor envi-ronmental impact, but high quality is such as great environmental choice. The study also showed that there are general aspects that are problematic to make environmentally con-scious choices and the obstacles of lack of knowledge in some areas come from several directions with regard to conditions in the public procurement. / Program: Magisterutbildning i Applied Textile Management

Mr Chester Jester / Mr Chester JesterÅgren, Johanna January 2012 (has links)
My bachelor project is a work of pattern design and production of woven upholstery fabrics, digital prints on textile materials and wallpaper, made for a fictional home environment. The desicions for the designs are based on a fictional character, named Mr Chester Jester. His preferences and needs combined with my omn are the result of this project. The outcome of the work is a formation of his world, made into a study of his home on the edge of reality and illusions. It is a work of duplicities -of pattern, room, technique and of an alternate side of myself.I have investigated the illusion of reality, and the reality of illusions. / Program: Textildesignutbildningen

Adding Values, Upholstery Concepts for Automotives Using Smart TextilesJul, Lene January 2007 (has links)
New textile materials are constantly being brought into the automotive field, and automobile design is a leader in innovative and spectacular developments where smart textile materials are used. The main elements of the current project are textile material research, automotive research, design and development of two upholstery concepts for automotives using smart textiles. The added values are RFI/EMI (Radio Frequency Interference / Electro Magnetic Interference) shielding qualities, light emitting, light reflective and antistatic qualities. Values in the smart-textile area are obtained through choice of material and textile techniques. Transportation textiles are considered high performance technical fabrics, but they must also meet the aesthetic demands of the market. In the current project the design is inspired by Japanese architectural thinking and strives to relate to outdoor environment to reduce the border between indoor and outdoor environment. The inspiration source is water surfaces. The colour setting is also inspired by water surfaces. Material selection is based on the chosen added values, material qualities, appearance and availability. The result of the work is two different upholstery concepts visualizing qualities of smart materials and requests the automotive field. Sprinkle is an upholstery with light emitting, light reflective and antistatic values. The materials used are monofilament, polyester and electroluminescent wires. Wave is an upholstery design with antistatic, light reflective and RFI/Emi shielding qualities. The materials used are stainless steel yarn, rubco and monofilament. /
Program: Konstnärligt masterprogram i mode- och textildesign

Uppsatsnivå: D

Grafiska kommunikationsverktyg för tapetseraren : Att enkelt förmedla ett komplext hantverk / Graphic tools of communication : Unfolding the complexity of the upholsterers craftSchütz, Katina January 2018 (has links)
In this thesis “Graphic tools of communication - Unfolding the complexity of the upholsterers craft” I examine how upholsterers can use graphic communication to mediate the complex and often hidden handcraft.Handcraft is already hard to charge and the fact that parts of the work is not even visible for the customers does not make the whole thing any easier. What I have become aware of during the process of writing is that this has also been a way for me to prevent the disappearance of the traditional and unique handcraft that upholstery is. By going in to the basics of graphic communication and the different parts that it contains like typography, photography, illustrations and layout, I am given the ability to create a simple and structured template for a printed document which I can give my future customers to inform them about what work has been done on their own piece of furniture. In that way they will become aware of the extensive process that the craft involves and understands what he or she is actually paying for when buying my expertise.I reckon this way of communication can contribute in spreading knowledge about crafts, such as upholstery.

This report presents the process and results of my bachelor thesis at Carl Malmsten Furniture Studies. With my journeyman's test as a starting point, I examined how the hidden craft underneath the surface of a traditional upholstered furniture can be made visible. The investigation has resulted in a describing text - from wooden body to upholstered furniture. My focus has been to answer the questions of what and especially why, rather than how you do something. I have searched formulations, words, representative illustrations and pictures to convey the intangible value and the tacit knowledge that is embedded in a traditional handmade furniture. The answer to question why gives us answers for the benefits of an act, and conveys the meaning and importance of tacit knowledge, which is knowledge that even a person without insight of the craftsmanship can comprehend. With a epistemological (the theory of knowledge) background, I have examined the concept of knowledge and the dissemination of knowledge, which is the basis for this work. I have studied how different types of knowledge through history has been defined and measured differently, and what consequences it has had for the development of handicraft. I have also searched theoretical support that emphasizes the meaning of documenting and communicating tacit knowledge. In each piece of furniture that an upholsterer restore, there is a cultural history to find, and it is through that history we learn our craftsmanship. Therefore, the work of a upholsterer is not just about craft itself, it also helps to strengthen the intangible cultural heritage and the survival of a traditional craft. For that reason I have written a historical background that describes the development of Swedish upholstery traditions and how it has evolved over time. As with the description of the work of my journeyman's test, I have particularly focused on searching for answers to the questions of why - the underlying reason whya material or technology came into use.
