Fathers of young children were interviewed about their experiences of fatherhood. Various experiences emerged, including that of fatherhood representing a major adjustment in life. Fathers experienced difficult, but also joyful, times. Fathers are offered various kinds of support. This includes economic contributions from society. This support is particularly well developed in Sweden and other western European countries compared to the rest of the world. The objectives of Swedish public health policy were developed to help families achieve greater equality within the family, concerning the child’s well-being. The aim of this study was to illustrate what fathers themselves had to say about equality and the experiences of fatherhood. Method. A qualitative method was used. Telephoneinterviews were accomplished. Six fathers were interviewed and data was gathered. Analysis. The material were analysed using qualitative content analysis. Results. Fathers felt a range of feelings about their children. These included role strain and difficulties, but also positive moments spent with the child. Fathers found it easy to access support, but also mentioned some obstacles, which some fathers felt more stressful. Child health care services received both praise and criticism concerning the support provided. Some fathers stated that they did not feel they were taken seriously. Implications. As shown by the evidence in the study, the child health care services also had the potential to improve the support offered to fathers in times of distress.
