No. of bitstreams: 1 2006-Marcos Aurelio Campos de Queiroz.pdf: 479215 bytes, checksum: da501a36f5b471686739cc04b11bafad (MD5) Previous issue date: 2006-08-08 / This work aims to study legal entities with up to four professionals, located in Downtown Rio de Janeiro, and acting at four services segments selected in the Economic Activities National Classification (CNAE): Financial Intermediation, Computing Activities and Related Services, Services Specially Rendered to Other Enterprises and Recreative, Cultural and Sportive Activities. The research characterizes the profile of these legal entities, observing their dynamics and acting logics, from the reporting supplied by the Central Register of Enterprises (CEMPRE) of Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). The random stratified sampling was selected by Excel for Windows software, and a questionnaire was elaborated to collect data so as to register the opening reasons of these legal entities, experience level of consulted professionals, business maintenance difficulties, means of rendering services, type of clients and professional performance motivation in the near future. The study shows the context of the recent economics trajectory of Rio de Janeiro, discusses the changes in the labor market which resulted in job offer decrease, the service sector characteristics and their importance in the contemporary world, entrepreneurship characteristics, the importance of very small and small businesses and the opening of legal entities as an alternative for professional performance. From the assessment of the data acquired through the research questionnaire and observations done during the investigation, there is a descriptive analysis of the present reality of each of the four researched services segments, and the motivation behind the opening of legal entities and their maintenance, either as a result of entrepreneurship spirit of the professionals and/or their adaptation to the present reality of the labor market. The study reveals a high instability of the researched legal entities, indicating that the high number of new units opening as a result of the involved professional's entrepreneurship spirit, as an adapting movement of these professionals to the scarcity of formal labor market vacancy, which has been accentuated in the last years. It has been noticed that the opening of legal entities is a means used by entrepreneurs in order to legalize their activities and to act in the formal economy, which confirms the predominance of the so-called entrepreneurship by necessity , as it is the most common modality of entrepreneurship in Brazil.

Survival Strategies for Owners of Micro and Small Enterprises in Kenya

Too, Samuel Kipngetich 01 January 2019 (has links)
Micro and small enterprise (MSE) owners in Kenya are faced with a myriad of constraints that affect their survival for longer than the first 5 years. Owners of MSEs who are unable to identify and implement strategies may not succeed in sustaining their businesses. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore strategies owners of MSEs in Nairobi, Kenya, used to sustain their businesses for longer than 5 years. The conceptual framework for the study was the theory of constraints. Data were collected from 4 purposefully selected MSE owners in Nairobi, Kenya, through face-to-face, semistructured interviews, and review of field notes and company documents. Using thematic data analysis, the major themes that emerged were customer service, access to capital, and nearness to market. The implications of this study for positive social change include strategies for MSE owners to generate stable income for employees, new employment opportunities for job seekers, improved standards of healthcare and education for the community, and a positive lifestyle for the residents of Kenya.

Industrial Relations Processes in Registered Clubs of NSW

Buultjens, Jeremy, n/a January 2001 (has links)
The small business sector has become an increasingly important segment of the Australian economy since the 1970s. Industrial relations in the sector have been assumed to be harmonious. However, to a large extent this belief about industrial relations is based on conventional wisdom rather empirical evidence. Industrial relations research in Australia has concentrated on medium to large businesses because the centralised nature of the industrial relations system encouraged a collective emphasis. This collective emphasis ensured peak representative bodies and larger organisations had a tendency to dominate while small enterprises and their employees were, to a large extent, excluded. The perceived non-problematic nature of industrial relations in the small business sector was another reason for the lack of focus on the sector. The low incidence of strike activity and the low levels of trade union membership have meant research has been concentrated on the more "difficult" areas of industrial relations. The lack of empirical research into industrial relations in the sector is an important shortcoming. There are a number of commentators who suggest that it is too simplistic to assume harmonious relations. It is likely that there is a range of industrial relations in small business, depending on a number of variables including the personality of the owner/manager and employees, the type of business and the current economic climate. The legislative framework will also have an important affect on industrial relations. This study addresses the lack of empirical research in industrial relations in the small business sector by examining the differences between small and large registered clubs in NSW. Registered clubs have an unusual ownership structure and unusual business goals. They are also unusual since they are non-profit organisations formed by groups of people who share a common interest and who have come together to pursue or promote that interest. Registered clubs are governed by a board of directors who are responsible for the formulation of policy and for ensuring that management carries out these policies. This study found that there were significant differences in regards to some aspects of employment relations. For example, small clubs were more likely to have lower rates of unionisation than large clubs. They were also likely to have lower levels of informal bargaining than large clubs. The methods of communication within the workplace were likely to be more informal in small clubs and they were less likely to have communications with a trade union. Despite this greater degree of informality in employment relations, small clubs were more likely to use award provisions to determine wages for their managers and employees. Interestingly, despite the lower level of unionisation and the greater use of awards by smaller clubs there were no significant differences between small and large club managers' perception of the impact of awards and trade unions on club flexibility. The findings from this study suggest the deregulation of the Australian industrial relations system may not have any significant benefits for small business.

Ekonomistyrning i små tillväxtföretag : En studie över sambanden mellan tillväxt och ekonomistyrning / Management Control Systems in Small and Fast Growing Enterprises : A study of the relation between growth and management control systems

Esbjörnsson, Olof, Johansson, David January 2012 (has links)
Growth and management control systems influence each other. The emergence of management control systems are driven by both external and internal factors. Management control systems do not stimulate growth in itself, but is necessary for enabling continued growth.

Implementation of Business Intelligence Systems : A study of possibilities and difficulties in small IT-enterprises

Westerlund, Elisabeth, Persson, Hanna January 2015 (has links)
This thesis is written at the department of Business Studies at Uppsala University. The study addresses the differences in possibilities and difficulties of implementing business intelligence (BI)-systems among small IT-enterprises. BI-systems support enterprises in decision-making. To answer the aim of this thesis, theories regarding organizational factors determining a successful implementation of a BI-system were used. Theories regarding components of BI- systems, data warehouse (DW) and online analytical processing (OLAP) were also used. These components enable the decision-support provided by a BI-system. A qualitative study was performed, at four different IT-enterprises, to gather the empirical material. Interviews were performed with CEOs and additional employees at the enterprises. After the empirical material was gathered an analysis was performed to draw conclusion regarding the research topic. The study has concluded that there are differences in possibilities and difficulties of implementing BI-systems among small IT-enterprises. A difference among the enterprises is the perceived ability to finance an implementation. Another difference is in the managerial- and organizational support of an implementation, but also in the business need of using a BI- system in decision-making. There are also differences in how the enterprises use a DW. Not all enterprises benefits from the ability of a DW to manage complex and large amounts of data, neither from the advanced analysis performed by OLAP. The enterprises thus need to examine further if the use of a BI-system is beneficial and would be used successfully in their company.
