Gesture-Based Image Acquisition between Smartphone and Digital SignageHo, Jason Ching-Hsien January 2011 (has links)
Mobile phones have formed a social network within the phone subscriber population by allowing the phone subscribers to exchange information. Nowadays, smartphones have been improved with a variety of functionalities, such as a built-in cameras, motion sensors, and Wi-Fi wireless connectivity to enable the phone subscriber to take photographs of a desired object for distribution to other users through SMS or email. These functionalities make the mobile phones the perfect tool in terms of viral marketing within cellular phone subscribers.
This thesis proposes a novel methodology that allows the phone subscriber to perform gestures for image acquisition from public signage displays. The public display is signage which displays a list of images in chronological order. The signage distributes the image list to nearby phones in the form of datagrams by means of multi-casts. Additionally, Wi-Fi connection between the phone and the
signage must be established to enable multi-cast. When the phone has the completed image list
downloaded, the phone subscriber can point the phone at the signage and perform a dragging gesture once he sees the desired image displayed by the signage. The current state of the project has concluded the development of the application to achieve the aforementioned task. However, the development of data transmission from one phone to another is still ongoing. Further development in the future would enable another gesture for data distribution to other phones in the vicinity.
Web-based administration applications have also been developed to manage the image list in the
signage. Through this web-based application, the administrator can generate new image list and then upload it to a FTP server. When the updated image list is stored in a remote FTP server, the signage periodically retrieves the image list from the FTP server. After the signage has received the updated image list, it then distributes the image list in the form of datagrams by means of multicasts. In summary, this thesis documents the impact of such technology in viral marketing research.

PScout: Analyzing the Android Permission SpecificationAu, Kathy Wain Yee 18 March 2013 (has links)
Modern smartphone operating systems (OSs) have been developed with a greater emphasis on security and protecting privacy. One of the security mechanisms these systems use is permission system. We perform an analysis of the Android permission system in an attempt to begin answering some of the questions that have arisen about its design and implementation. We developed PScout, a tool that extracts the permission specification from the Android OS source code using static analysis and analyzed 5 versions of Android spanning version 2.2 up to the recently released Android 4.1. Our main findings are that while there is little redundancy in the permission specification, if applications could be constrained to only use documented APIs, then about 18-26% of the non-system permissions can be hidden. Finally, we find that a trade-off exists between enabling least-privilege security with fine-grained permissions and maintaining stability of the permission specification as the Android OS evolves.

As the SAEB, PROVA BRASIL and PISA indices note the difficulty of understanding the texts of the students of the final series of Elementary School, this research proposed the work with the reading of microfiction by the screen of the smartphone for supposing that the reading of this mediated genre By the technological device could motivate students and thus make reading learning more profitable. Since this genre belongs to the order of narration - the inherent act of man - and the use of technologies is not only recommended by experts, but also part of the students' lives, the research adopted the objective of: analyzing the interest of students in the 9 th Year of the Fundamental Education of the Public Network for reading the microfiction genre, mediated by a smartphone application. The study was based on the proposed reading of Antunes (2003, 2009), Goulemot (2009), Marcuschi (1996, 2008), Possenti (2001) and others. The teaching-learning of the textual genre was based on Bakhtin's Interactionism (1997) and the functional approach of Marcuschi (2008, 2010). The recognition of the microfiction as textual genre was based on Gonzaga (2007), Silva (2013), Spalding (2008) and others. The theoretical bases for the use of digital learning objects followed the theoretical line of Lévy (1993, 1996, 1998), Silva (2007), Schwarzelmüller and Ornellas (2007), Xavier (2008) and Moura (2009), among others. Using a qualitative approach of applied nature, the research constituted a case study and, for its execution, an educational reading application called Continho was proposed, whereby four students were challenged to read microfictions at different levels of comprehension, Using multimodal resources. During the game, students responded to a feedback to investigate their performance and, after playing, they answered a six-question questionnaire to check their reaction when playing on the display of a cell phone. With the discourse analysis method, the research results confirmed the attractiveness of microfiction reading on the smartphone screen and thus revealed the advantage of the school linking reading to new technologies to enable a pleasant encounter between the student and the text.

Smartphone-Based Optical Detection of Diagnostic Biosensors on Microfluidic PlatformsCho, Soohee, Cho, Soohee January 2017 (has links)
Diagnostic biosensors are on the rise in the global market due to the increasing prevalence of diseases. Specifically, the point-of-care segment has made great strides due to the improvement of biosensors' user-friendliness, simplicity, and clinical capabilities in the comfort of one's home. Although there are conventional diagnostic techniques, they are mutually time-consuming, costly, and labor-intensive. Not to mention, they are primarily dependent on bench-top or large immovable equipment. The widespread availability of smartphones has potentiated optical biosensors towards delivery of rapid and point-of-care diagnostic biosensors. Due to the affordability and user-friendliness of smartphones, smartphone-based biosensors may become ubiquitously available. Additionally, microfluidic platforms possess small footprints and portability towards development of true point-of-care and real-time diagnostic biosensors.
In this dissertation, development of multiple diagnostic biosensors on microfluidic platforms is discussed. Diagnostic biosensors equipped with a smartphone-based optical detection show great promise of bringing clinical and bench-top laboratory capabilities for the convenience of the user, with reduced time, costs, and labor requirements. The widespread availability of point-of-care and real-time diagnostic biosensors may show promise in securing global health.

Denial of convenience attack to smartphones using a fake wi-fi access pointDondyk, Erich 01 May 2012 (has links)
In this thesis, we consider a novel denial of service attack targeted at popular smartphone operating systems. This type of attack, which we call a Denial of Convenience (DoC) attack, prevents non-technical savvy victims from utilizing data services by exploiting the connectivity management protocol of smartphones' operating systems when encountered with a Wi-Fi access point. By setting up a fake Wi-Fi access point without Internet access (using simple devices such as a laptop), an adversary can prompt a smartphone with enabled Wi-Fi features to automatically terminate a valid mobile broadband connection and connect to this fake Wi-Fi access point. This, as a result, prevents the targeted smartphone from having any type of Internet connection unless the victim is capable of diagnosing the problem and disabling the Wi-Fi features manually. For the majority of smartphone users that have little networking knowledge, this can be a challenging task. We demonstrate that most current smartphones, including iPhone and Android phones, are vulnerable to this DoC attack. To address this attack, we propose implementing a novel Internet-access validation protocol to validate a Wi-Fi access point by taking advantage of the cellular network channel. It first uses the cellular network to send a secret to an Internet validation server, and tries to retrieve this secret via the newly established Wi-Fi channel to validate the connection of the Wi-Fi channel.

Ubiquitous collaborative multimedia capture of live experiences toward authoring extensible interactive multimedia documents / Captura multimídia colaborativa ubíqua de experiências ao vivo para autoria de documentos multimídia interativos extensíveisUscamayta, Andrey Omar Mozo 27 April 2017 (has links)
The growing importance of multimedia content generated by ordinary users demands research for models, methods, technologies and systems that support multimedia production. Despite recent results allowing the collaborative capture of video via mobile devices, there is gap in supporting the collaborative capture of multiple media. In this dissertation we propose that ubiquitous collaborative multimedia production can be carried out by users who capture and annotate multiple media using the CMoViA mobile application. CMoViA also allows export the user-generated content to the CI+WaC, which allows them to edit the user-generated content in the form of interactive and extensible multimedia documents. The proposal demanded extending recent work reported in the literature, namely the I+WaC-IE (Interactors+WaC-Interaction Events) model, the I+WaC-Editor tool and MoViA tool. Hence, CMoViA follows the proposed CI+WaC-IE model. We discuss results from a case study, carried out in the educational domain, in which students collaboratively capture a lecture. Assim, a aplicação CMoViA segue o modelo CI+WaC-IE proposto neste trabalho como extensão do modelo I+WaC-IE.

Détection de comportements à risque dans les applications en utilisant l'analyse statique / Detection of risky behavior in smartphone applications using static analysisMartinez, Denis 02 February 2016 (has links)
The mobile device world allows users to install applications on theirpersonal devices, but typically falls short in terms of security, because theusers lack any ability to judge if an application will be dangerous, and thereis no way to limit the harmfulness of a program after it is installed. We explore static analysis as a tool for risk assessment and detection of malware behavior. Our method characterizes as a rule-driven, partial program approach: one of our goals is to provide a convenient, expressive domain-specific language to express an abstract domain and associate behavior to the library functions of the system.Expressivity is an important asset to have and it is obtained by the means of abstraction. The mobile technologies evolve fast and new ways to develop programs frequently appear.A real-world static analysis solution absolutely needs to react fast to the arrival of new technologies, in order not to fall into obsolescence. Weshow how it is possible to develop static analyses, and then to reuse them across mutiple smartphone platforms.

Sökfunktioner i Smartphones : Hur moderna sökfunktioner påverkat vårt sökbeteendeMagnusson, Jesper January 2011 (has links)
The purpose of this paper has been to identify which modern search functions user of Smartphones are using, why just these functions are being used, and how they have affected the way users acquire information. Modern search functions in this paper means searches that are not based on text, i.e. ways to search for information by other means than writing something into a search field. To identify this, two studies were conducted, one with a questionnaire being distributed with the help of Google Docs through social networks, and one with four interviews with users of modern search functions for Smartphones. The study showed that even though 76 % of Smartphone users are aware of at least one modern search function, only 29% uses one on a regular basis. The reason that modern search functions are not more widespread is that they are not sufficiently developed yet, and serious usage is still in the future. Because of this no major impact on search behavior can yet be found.
